Description

[0001] A lighting system comprising interlocking linear lighting devices

[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The invention relates to a lighting system for providing a grid structure, the lighting system comprising a first elongated linear lighting device and a second elongated linear lighting device releasably connectable to each other.

[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0005] Continuous advances in LED lighting have turned the linear LED array (or “light strip”) into the most common and affordable light module, creating all kinds of new linear lighting propositions. One specific direction is to combine linear light units in a 2D configuration, such as an open ceiling lighting grid or decorative linear ambience lighting. The linear lighting devices in the form of LED strips currently offered on the market may be stored and transported in a compact way and assembled by an end-user, possibly enabling a customized shape and lay-out.

[0006] Currently existing modular lighting systems use connecting elements to which the modules are attached when assembling the lighting system. Therefore, the linear lighting effects are interrupted with a dark spot at the connecting points. This is a particular problem when a plurality of linear lighting devices need to be interconnected.

[0007] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0008] In view of the above, there is a need for a lighting system comprising linear lighting devices, wherein the lighting system has a connection solution that ensures that the light emission windows of adjacent devices are directly contiguous and separated only by a minimal seam between the linear lighting elements.

[0009] To this end, the present invention provides a lighting system for providing a grid structure. The lighting system according to the present invention comprises a first elongated linear lighting device extending in a first longitudinal direction. The term “elongated” is in the context of the present invention meant to imply that the extension of the first elongated linear lighting device in the first longitudinal direction is significantly greater than the extension of the first elongated linear lighting device in the direction being perpendicular to the first longitudinal direction, i.e. in the transverse direction.

[0010] The first elongated linear lighting device comprises a first surface and a second surface arranged opposite to the first surface in a direction perpendicular to the first longitudinal direction. The first surface may be a light-emitting surface, and the second surface may be a backing surface. The first elongated linear lighting device further comprises at least one first receptacle. The receptacle may be in the form of a recess in the first elongated linear lighting device. Preferably, the first receptacle is arranged on the second surface of the first elongated linear lighting device, or along at least one of the longitudinal edge portions of the first elongated linear lighting device, wherein the longitudinal edge portions delimit the first and the second surfaces of the first elongated linear lighting device. The first elongated linear lighting device may comprise a first and a second terminal portion spaced apart in the first longitudinal direction. The receptacle may be arranged adjacent to at least one of the first and the second terminal portion of the first elongated linear lighting device, in the center of the first elongated linear lighting device along the longitudinal extension thereof, or anywhere between those positions.

[0011] The receptacle arranged in the first elongated linear lighting device may be able to receive a connecting element arranged on the second elongated linear lighting device from either of the longitudinal edge portions of the first elongated linear lighting device. In such an embodiment, the receptacle may be a dual receptacle. The first elongated linear lighting device may comprise a plurality of receptacles distributed along the longitudinal extension of the first elongated linear lighting device. It is further conceivable that the receptacle is movable along at least a portion of the first elongated linear lighting device along the longitudinal extension thereof.

[0012] The lighting system according to the present invention further comprises a second elongated linear lighting device extending in a second longitudinal direction. In analogy with the above, the second elongated linear lighting device comprising a first surface and a second surface arranged opposite to the first surface in a direction perpendicular to the second longitudinal direction. The second elongated linear lighting device further comprising at least one first connecting element. The connecting element may be integrated into the second elongated linear lighting device or may be a separate element. The connecting element may be in the form of pins protruding through the surface, e.g. diffuser / isolation, of the first elongated linear lighting device when the first and / or the second elongated linear lighting devices are pushed together. The first longitudinal direction may be substantially perpendicular to the second longitudinal direction when the first elongated linear lighting device is attached to the second elongated linear lighting device. It is further conceivable that the first elongated linear lighting device and the second elongated linear lighting device are arranged relative each other at an angle deviating from 90°.

[0013] The at least one first connecting element is arranged to be releasably received by the at least one receptacle of the first elongated linear lighting device, such that the first elongated linear lighting device and the second elongated linear lighting device are releasably connectable to each other. By the term “releasably” is understood that the connecting element is attached to a receptacle in such a manner that the attachment may be broken without any impact on the function of the connecting element or the receptacle.

[0014] The second elongated linear lighting device may comprise a first and a second terminal portion spaced apart in the second longitudinal direction. The connecting element may be arranged adjacent to at least one of the first and the second terminal portion of the second elongated linear lighting device.

[0015] The first surface of the first elongated linear lighting device may constitute a first continuous element and the second surface of the first elongated linear lighting device may constitute a first intermittent element. The first intermittent element may comprise at least two first sections separated by the at least one receptacle.

[0016] Analogously, the first surface of the second elongated linear lighting device may constitute a second continuous element and the second surface of the second elongated linear lighting device may constitute a second intermittent element. The second intermittent element may comprise at least two second sections separated by the at least one connecting element.

[0017] According to the present invention, the first continuous element and the second intermittent element and / or the first intermittent element and the second continuous element may be light-emitting surfaces. In such an embodiment, the at least one receptacle of the first intermittent element is releasably connectable to the at least one connecting element of the second intermittent element, thus forming a seamless lighting system having a 2D grid structure.

[0018] The releasable connection between the first elongated linear lighting device and the second elongated linear lighting device may be mechanical only or may be both mechanical and electrical. In the latter case, the at least one receptacle comprises a contact element for electrically connecting the first elongated linear lighting device and the second elongated linear lighting device. The contact element may be of any conventional type, such as a plug-in contact element or a magnetic contact element.

[0019] In particular, the lighting system may comprise one first elongated linear lighting device extending in a first longitudinal direction X. In analogy with the above, the first elongated linear lighting device comprises a first surface and a second surface arranged opposite to the first surface in a direction perpendicular to the first longitudinal direction X. The first elongated linear lighting device comprises a plurality of first receptacles. The lighting system may then further comprise a plurality of second elongated linear lighting devices extending in a second longitudinal direction Y. Each of the second elongated linear lighting devices comprise a first surface and a second surface arranged opposite to the first surface in a direction perpendicular to the second longitudinal direction Y. Each of the second elongated linear lighting devices further comprises at least one first connecting element. The connecting elements are arranged to be releasably received by the receptacles of the first elongated linear lighting device, such that the first elongated linear lighting device and the plurality of second elongated linear lighting devices are releasably connectable to each other.

[0020] The lighting system may comprise two first elongated linear lighting devices extending in a first longitudinal direction X substantially parallel to each other. Each of the first elongated linear lighting devices comprises a first surface and a second surface arranged opposite to the first surface in a direction perpendicular to the first longitudinal direction X, each of the first elongated linear lighting devices further comprises a plurality of first receptacles. The lighting system further comprises a plurality of second elongated linear lighting devices extending in a second longitudinal direction. Each of the second elongated linear lighting devices comprises a first surface and a second surface arranged opposite to the first surface in a direction perpendicular to the second longitudinal direction. Each of the second elongated linear lighting devices further comprises at least one first connecting element. The connecting elements are arranged to be releasably received by the receptacles of the first elongated linear lighting devices, such that the first elongated linear lighting devices and the plurality of second elongated linear lighting devices are releasably connectable to each other.

[0021] The lighting system according to the present invention may comprise a suspension device for suspending the lighting system from a surface. The suspension device may comprise an electrical connection element for connecting the lighting system to the power grid. Alternatively, the lighting system according to the present invention may be attached to a surface, such as a ceiling or a wall. In such an embodiment, the first elongated linear lighting device or the second elongated linear lighting device may comprise an attachment element for attaching the lighting system to a surface.

[0022] The lighting system according to the present invention may comprise a plurality of receptacles and a plurality of connecting elements. The number of receptacles may be equal to or different from the number of connecting elements. In particular, the number of receptacles may be greater than the number of connecting elements. In such an embodiment, it may be desirable to disguise the receptacles not being in use in order to improve the aesthetic appearance of the lighting system. To this end, the lighting system may further comprise at least one power transfer element being connectable to at least one receptacle. In particular, the power transfer element may be light-emitting, such that a continuous light-emitting surface is achieved when the power transfer element is connected to a receptacle not being connected to a connecting element. The power transfer element may be an activatable LEDs or a light guide. The latter may be an element comprising a diffuser fitting the receptacle not being used.

[0023] Put differently, the lighting system may comprise a plurality of interlocking elongated linear lighting devices. In such an embodiment, two types of elongated linear lighting devices may be needed. The elongated linear lighting devices may comprise a plurality of receptacles at predefined positions either in between the first sections of the first intermittent element, e.g. the light-emitting sections or in between the second sections of the second intermittent element, e.g. backing segments. A first type of linear lighting devices may comprise a continuous linear light-emitting surface while having a backing surface having sections separated by one or more receptacles able to receive a complementary linear lighting device of a second type which has a continuous backing surface comprising intermittent light-emitting segments at the opposite surface.

[0024] In particular, each of the first continuous element, the first intermittent element, the second continuous element and the second intermittent element is a light emitting surface. For instance, if installed underneath a ceiling, the downlighting part of the elongated linear lighting devices could provide more functional light for general illumination, while the uplighting part of the elongated linear lighting devices could be used to project an ambience lighting pattern on the ceiling.

[0025] The lighting system according to the present invention may comprise a plurality of first elongated linear lighting devices, each first elongated linear lighting device comprising a first intermittent element comprising a plurality of first sections and a plurality of receptacles. The lighting system may further comprise a plurality of second elongated linear lighting devices, each second elongated linear lighting device comprising a second intermittent element comprising a plurality of second sections and a plurality of connecting elements.

[0026] In such an embodiment, each of the connecting elements is releasably connectable to any one of the receptacles. As is evident from the above, the lighting system of the present invention provides an unprecedented flexibility, wherein the user may create virtually any desirable pattern by selecting which connecting element to attached to which receptacle. The first and / or the second elongated linear lighting devices may be cut to a desired size. For instance, they may be cut to size at the location of one of the receptacles.

[0027] According to the present invention, the first elongated linear lighting device may further comprise at least one second connecting element, and the second elongated linear lighting device may further comprise at least one second receptacle. In other words, the first and the second elongated linear lighting devises may comprise both a receptacle and a connecting element, thus further improving flexibility and versatility of the lighting system. It is further conceivable to provide the first and / or the second connecting element with a third receptacle, such that a separate connector unit may be used for connecting the first elongated linear lighting device and the second elongated linear lighting device to each other.
