[0020] I. Introduction

[0021] The present patent document describes how a wireless device determines a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) corresponding to a precoding matrix applicable for more than 32 antenna ports of a network device.

[0022] To achieve higher downlink (DL) throughput and broader coverage range, a Base Station (BS) needs to equip more and more antenna ports, e.g., 64 or 128 ports. In a Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) system, a user equipment (UE) is required to report a Precoding Matrix Indicator (PMI) to indicate the DL precoding matrix. The PMI reporting is based on a predefined codebook. In the current industry specification, the codebook is designed for PMI reporting with 32 or fewer BS antenna ports. In this patent document, we provide a method of codebook enhancement to support PMI reporting with more than 32 BS antenna ports. Specifically, the method includes the following embodiments:

[0023] - Embodiment 1: Configuration of oversampling factors

[0024] - Embodiment 2: Configuration of codebook subset restrictions

[0025] - Embodiment 3: Spatial domain (SD)  / frequency domain (FD) basis selection

[0026] - Embodiment 4: Non-zero coefficient indication

[0027] - Embodiment 5: Non-zero coefficient quantization

[0028] The PMI reporting is based on a predefined codebook. Up to Rel-17, the specification provides seven kinds of codebooks, namely Type-I-Single-Panel, Type-I-Multiple-Panel, Type-II, Type-II-Port-Selection, enhanced-Type-II, enhanced-Type-II-Port-Selection, further-enhanced-Type-II-Port-Selection codebooks, which are defined in clauses 5.2.2.2.1 to 5.2.2.2.7, respectively. These codebooks are applicable for different use cases, but all of them only support up to 32 antenna ports. If we directly increase the supported number of antenna ports of these  codebooks, the PMI reporting overhead would significantly increase due to the increased dimension of the precoding matrix. Meanwhile, the DL precoding performance cannot be guaranteed due to the lack of optimization for more than 32 antenna ports. In this patent document, we provide a method of codebook enhancement to support PMI reporting with more than 32 antenna ports. The DL precoding performance is guaranteed with reduced PMI reporting overhead.

[0029] First, we provide explanations of some terminologies to be used in the patent document.

[0037] - The Frequency Domain (FD) basis corresponding to for layer l is defined in clause 5.2.2.2.5 of TS 38.214 as

[0038] where N3 is the number of total precoding matrices, Mv is the number of selected FD bases, and l is the layer index.

[0039] - “amplitude” can be equivalent to “amplitude coefficient, ” or “coefficient amplitude. ”
