Description

[0001]PORTABLE APPARATUS FOR SUPPORTING AND TRANSFERRING A PATIENT DESCRIPTIVE SPECIFICATION The present invention belongs to the area of medical equipment for patient care. More specifically, the present invention relates to a portable and foldable apparatus, placeable on a bed, for supporting a patient, assisting them in changing positions and assisting them in getting in and out of bed.DESCRIPTION OF THE STATE OF THE ART Many patients who remain bedridden or are confined, such as disabled people and the elderly, do not have sufficient physical strength or have lost mobility to accommodate themselves, sit up or stand out of bed in a safe and autonomous manner; therefore, they need assistance to support their body weight and make postural changes that can be simple, such as sitting to eat, folding their legs or lying down to rest, as well as more complex activities such as getting out of bed or lying down in it. There are assistive devices that are not only useful for the patient themselves, but also provide a certain relief to caregivers and family members, helping them to care for the patient and perform care tasks more easily. In the state of the art, it is possible to find assistance solutions for this type of activities, as well as hospital beds that have built-in mechanisms to recline different parts of the bed, as can be seen in patent document US2019231620A1 published on 08 / 01 / 2019, referring to a "Patient Restraint Apparatus," which basically describes a hospital bed with different mechanisms with electronically controlled hydraulic actuators, which allow the position of the mattress incorporated into the bed to be changed, according to different patient needs. Although beds like these used in hospitals seem to provide the desired support, they have the major drawback of being very bulky, heavy, expensive to manufacture and difficult to transport, which is not appropriate for a patient who is at home.Simpler bedside assistive devices have been developed which, while allowing various parts to be folded away to assist in changing the patient's posture, do not have simple built-in means to assist with getting in and out of bed at home. Examples of this can be seen in solutions such as that taught in US5127034A published on June 30, 1992, which describes a support surface that is particularly suitable for supporting a patient and allowing x-rays to be taken of the patient. The support surface comprises at least two substantially rigid support elements coupled together by a flexible connecting element such that relative movement can take place between the support elements. The support elements and the flexible connecting elements are radiolucent with at least one area through which x-rays must pass.Another similar device is US10864126B2 dated 12 / 15 / 2020, referring to “Patient Handling Devices,” which states that it may include a support member and a torso support member, including at least one articulated joint coupled to the support member and the torso support member. Although it is possible to find solutions that address the problem of patient access to the bed, mainly by incorporating turntable mechanisms that generate the rotation of a support surface where the patient lies down, as can be seen in US10406053B2 of 09 / 10 / 2019 referring to a “Rotating and articulated set for sleeping” or in DE202013001182U1 of 02 / 22 / 2013, referring to a “Rotating bed”, at the same time, it is possible to verify that the devices that incorporate these mechanisms are part of the structure of the bed, without being simple over-bed devices that are of low complexity and cost, for implementation at home. There are also simple devices intended for more domestic use that allow the patient to be turned in bed, as disclosed in US5381569A of 17 / 01 / 1995, referring to a "Device and method for turning and positioning patients", which comprises a pair of discs that rotate relative to each other and can be placed on the bed, under the patient's buttocks, to facilitate turning in a horizontal plane. This last type of device mentioned, despite being simple devices, does not meet the need to be able to support the patient's entire body to assist them in posture changes such as sitting with their legs bent, lying down, or sitting with their legs stretched out.The disadvantages that can be seen in all state-of-the-art solutions are that the devices, while some are simple, do not include means for turning the patient horizontally. While they do have means for turning the patient, these solutions are part of complete, complex, and expensive beds, typically for hospitals with limited home use. The other disadvantage detected is that while there are simple devices that can be placed on a bed, they do not solve the problem of portability, allowing the device to be transported in a compact state, or do not facilitate its storage when folded. The above demonstrates that there is an unmet need that satisfies all the needs for home or domestic use of this type of device, which, although it is bed-mounted, can be folded down to change the patient's posture; which at the same time facilitates its entry into or exit from the bed with a simple mechanism and is light so that it can be easily carried and folded for storage when not in use. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention belongs to the area of medical equipment for patient care, whose main objective is to provide an apparatus for supporting the patient's body, which allows different configurations to support the patient according to various body postures.Another objective of the invention is to provide a patient body support apparatus that is portable and versatile, allowing it to be temporarily placed on a bed or a horizontal support surface, and which, at the same time, allows it to be easily moved or stored when not in use. Another objective of the invention is to provide a patient body support apparatus that allows the patient's orientation to be changed in a horizontal plane to facilitate the patient's exit or entry into or out of bed. The present patient body support apparatus comprises a foldable support structure with multiple sections for supporting the patient's body, hingedly joined together by means of hinged joints; it comprises a lower rotating mechanism that allows the support structure to be changed in a horizontal plane; and it comprises a foldable rear support bracket. The support structure is lightweight to allow for easy portability and handling; it is formed by multiple sections for supporting the patient's body, which are joined together in a foldable manner thanks to hinged joints that allow the inclination of the sections to be changed in order to provide support to the patient's body in different positions. Preferably, the multiple sections comprise an upper backrest section for supporting the patient's back, which is joined to the folding rear support frame; a central section for the patient's seat, joined on an underside to the lower rotating mechanism; an intermediate section for supporting the patient's thighs; and an end section for supporting the patient's calves. The central patient seating section is arranged and remains horizontal when the apparatus is in use; it preferably comprises an upper and a lower face, a rear edge and a front edge, where the upper face receives the patient's gluteal area, the rear edge is foldably connected, through hinged joints, to the upper backrest section, the front edge is foldably connected, through hinged joints, to the intermediate section, and its lower face is rotatably connected to the aforementioned lower rotating mechanism. The upper backrest section comprises a front face for supporting the patient's back; a rear face that is connected to the foldable back support support; a lower edge that is foldably connected by hinged joints to the rear edge of the central section of the apparatus; an upper edge opposite the lower edge that may comprise a handle for picking up the apparatus when it is in a folded state for storage. The intermediate section for supporting the patient's thighs comprises an upper face that receives the back of the patient's thighs; a rear edge that is foldably connected, by hinged joints, to the central section for seating the patient; and a front edge that is foldably connected, by hinged joints, to the end section for supporting the patient's calves. The end section for supporting the patient's calves comprises an upper face where said calves rest; a front edge; and a rear edge that is hingedly connected, via hinged joints, to the aforementioned intermediate section. Other embodiments of the invention may include sections additional to those described, such as a headrest section and a footrest section; in this case, the headrest section would be hingedly connected, via hinged joints, to the upper edge of the upper backrest section; meanwhile, the footrest section would be hingedly connected to the front edge of the end section for supporting the patient's calves. Said multiple sections each comprise a structural perimeter frame and a support plane joined by its periphery to said structural perimeter frame. In an optional embodiment, this perimeter frame can be formed by a continuous folded profile, preferably made of aluminum for low weight, to which the support plane is attached. In another preferred embodiment, the structural perimeter frame of each section is formed by several sections of straight profiles joined together at right angles by means of bent couplings; preferably, each support section comprises opposite side profiles and transverse profiles, forming a configuration, preferably rectangular, for each support section. The profile sections are aluminum profiles for low weight, and the bent couplings are plastic. The support surface of each of the multiple sections can be formed by a single piece joined along its periphery to the aforementioned perimeter frame; optionally, said support surface can be formed by at least one horizontal strip or by several horizontal and vertical strips forming a support pattern. This support surface can be made of a woven polymeric fabric to promote low weight, ventilation, and the possibility of being washable or easily cleanable. In other embodiments, this support surface could also be a multi-perforated aluminum sheet or any other lightweight, durable material. Preferably, the device can be used in conjunction with an anti-bedsore mattress or a thin mat supported by the device, such that it can be folded together with the device to provide comfort to the patient. The folding rear support support comprises side profiles with distal ends joined to the upper backrest section through a rotating connector that allows said folding rear support support to be arranged at different angles with respect to the upper backrest section, such that this folding support rests on the bed or support surface and provides firm rear support to the backrest where the patient rests his or her back. Preferably, the rotating connector comprises a clamp joined to said rear section and, at the same time, joined to a rotating disk arranged at the distal end of the side profiles of the folding support. The aforementioned lower rotating mechanism comprises an upper platform connected to the underside of the central patient seating section; a lower platform with a flat underside for support on a bed or other flat surface; and an upper surface connected to the upper platform via a vertical rotating shaft. This mechanism allows the device to rotate in a horizontal plane, keeping the lower platform fixed on the bed or other surface where the device is resting; such that when it is necessary to assist the patient in getting into or out of bed, this mechanism can rotate the device, since it is supported on the upper platform of the mechanism, to change the patient's orientation from a longitudinal position, along the bed, to an orientation transverse to the bed. This, together with the folding of the different sections, especially the intermediate section and the extreme section supporting the calves, allows the patient to rotate and assist in changing positions to get into or out of bed. The lower rotating mechanism additionally includes a manually actuated lock to fix the rotation of the upper platform with respect to the lower platform, to prevent the device from rotating unintentionally. The hinged joints for folding connection between the multiple sections for supporting the patient's body, comprise pressure coupling discs, for example, through a bolt that acts as a rotation axis for the discs, allowing them to rotate oppositely to each other in a free angular range, but at the same time, generating sufficient compression to fix the angle at which the multiple support sections have been placed and remain in their position during use of the device. These hinged joints that join the multiple sections together allow the upper backrest section to be folded down within an angular range between 0° and 180° with respect to the central seat section, which is the section that is arranged and remains in a horizontal plane with respect to the bed or other support surface where the device can be placed; however, in practice, and according to the different positions in which it is normally necessary for the patient to be placed, this upper backrest section can be positioned between 0°, parallel to the central seat section, for example, to fold the device over itself and store or transport it; and 180°, remaining extended coplanar with said central seat section, to, for example, provide a horizontal position for the patient to sleep.Between these angles, the upper backrest section can be positioned at any intermediate angle that allows the patient's torso to be reclined, such as, for example, 90° for the patient to sit upright while eating; 45° for a reclined, alert, resting position; or 30° for a resting position. Furthermore, the hinged joints that connect the central seat section to the intermediate thigh support section allow the latter section to be folded down, relative to said central section, which remains horizontal, within an angular range between -90° and 180°. For example, a position of -90° of the intermediate section relative to the central seat section allows the patient to sit upright if the device is placed on a chair. It can also be coplanar with the central section at 0° to rotate the device on the bed and allow the patient to get in / out of bed. This coplanar position with the center section also allows the device to be completely folded for storage or transport, reducing its size. Folding this intermediate section 30° or 45° relative to the center section allows, for example, a recumbent position for the patient with their legs semi-folded. Folding 270°, meanwhile, positions this intermediate section inclined over the center section, allowing it to be completely semi-folded to facilitate storage. The hinged joints that connect the intermediate section to the end section to support the patient's calves allow the latter section to be folded relative to said intermediate section at an angle between -90°, folding downwards, and 0°, coplanar with the same intermediate section. For example, a -90° position is suitable when the device has been rotated horizontally, so that this end section, which supports the calves, folds down the side of the bed, making it easier for the patient to get in or out of bed. Thus, the design of this device allows for different configurations to adapt to the patient's different postural needs and facilitates the caregivers' work in assisting the patient with mobility, changing positions, or transferring them to or from the bed.The present invention demonstrates technical advantages given that, in addition to being a support with several folding sections to support the entire body of a patient in various positions; the apparatus is portable, allowing it to be placed on any bed, not necessarily a hospital bed, and it could even be placed on another support surface not necessarily a bed; additionally, the apparatus can be folded on itself to reduce its size and facilitate its storage or transport; and at the same time, the apparatus incorporates the lower rotating mechanism that allows changing the orientation of the patient in a horizontal plane to assist him / her in getting in / out of bed. It should be understood that the accompanying drawings are not necessarily to scale, presenting a simplified representation of various features illustrative of the basic principles of the invention. Specific design features, including, for example, specific dimensions, orientations, locations, and shapes of the various illustrated components, will be determined in part by the particular intended application and environment of use. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The invention will now be described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying figures, which illustrate different embodiments of the portable apparatus for supporting and transferring a patient. These embodiments are provided by way of explanation of the invention; however, its implementation is not limited to those embodiments. Those of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate upon reading this specification and viewing these drawings that various modifications and variations may be made thereto while maintaining the same inventive concept. The present invention relates to a portable apparatus (1) for supporting and transferring a patient, which may be placed on a horizontal surface, such as a bed (A); the apparatus allows for multiple configurations to change the position of the patient's body, allows for folding for storage or transfer, and allows for changing its orientation in a horizontal plane to assist the patient in getting in / out of / on the bed. According to the content of FIG.1, the apparatus (1) comprises a support structure (10) comprising multiple sections for supporting the patient's body, hingedly joined together by hinged joints (20); a lower rotating mechanism (30) that allows changing the orientation of the support structure (10) in a horizontal plane; and comprises a folding support (40) for rear support. As best illustrated in FIG. 2, the multiple sections comprise an upper backrest section (11), with a front face (111) for supporting the patient's back, joined at a rear face (112) to the folding support (40) for rear support; a central section (12) with an upper face (121) for seating the patient, joined by a lower face (122) to the lower rotating mechanism (30); an intermediate section (13) for supporting the patient's thighs, and an end section (14) for supporting the patient's calves. As exemplified in FIG.3, said multiple sections (11, 12, 13 and 14) each comprise a structural perimeter frame (15) and a central support plane (16) joined by its periphery (161) to said structural perimeter frame (15). The structural perimeter frame (15) of each section comprises several sections of straight profiles (151) joined together at right angles by means of angled couplings (152). In another embodiment of the invention, shown in FIG. 4, said support plane (16) is formed by at least one horizontal strip (162) joined to a respective perimeter frame (15). The lower rotating mechanism (30), as better illustrated in FIG. 5, comprises an upper platform (31) joined to the lower face (122) of the central section (12); a lower platform (32) with a flat lower face (321) for support on a bed or horizontal support surface (A), and an upper face (322) connected to the upper platform (31) through a rotating vertical axis (33).Additionally, the lower rotating mechanism (30) comprises a manually actuated locking mechanism (34) to fix the rotation of the upper platform (31) with respect to the lower platform (32) (not illustrated). As detailed in FIG. 6, the folding rear support support (40) comprises side profiles (41) with distal ends (42) attached to the upper section (11) through a rotating connector (43) that allows said folding rear support support (40) to be arranged at different angles with respect to the upper backrest section (11). This rotating connector (43) comprises a clamp (431) attached to the rear section (11) and at the same time, attached to a rotating disc (432) arranged at the distal end (42) of the side profiles (41) of the folding support (40). Now, as illustrated in FIG.7, the hinged joints (20) for folding connection between the multiple sections for supporting the patient's body, comprise coupling discs (21) rotatably connected under pressure, for example, through a bolt (22) that acts as a rotation axis for the coupling discs (21), allowing them to rotate oppositely to each other in a free angular range, but at the same time, generating sufficient compression to fix the angle at which the multiple support sections have been placed and for them to remain in their position during use of the device. These hinged joints (20) allow the upper backrest section (11) to fold down in an angular range between 0° and 180° with respect to the central seat section (12); the intermediate section (13) for supporting the patient's thighs to fold down in an angular range between -90° and 180° with respect to the central seat section (12); the end section (14) for supporting the patient's calves to fold down in an angular range between -90° and 0° with respect to the intermediate section (13); and the folding rear support support (40) to fold down at an angle of 0° to 180° with respect to the upper backrest section (11). In a first example of application of the invention, as shown in FIG. 8 and FIG.9, to allow the patient to adopt a horizontal position normally necessary for sleeping, the apparatus (1) arranged on a support surface (A), is configured with the upper section (11) at an angle of approximately 180º with respect to the central section (12), being coplanar with this central section (12), as well as the intermediate section (13) and the extreme section (14). In this case, the folding support (40) can also be aligned horizontally or slightly inclined downwards, resting on the surface (A) to provide better support to the upper section (11). In a second example of application of the invention, as shown in FIG. 10 and FIG. 11, to allow the patient to adopt a position with the torso reclined, the apparatus (1) arranged on a support surface (A), is configured with the upper section (11) at an angle between more than 90º and less than 180º with respect to the support surface (A).In this case, the folding support (40) is arranged inclined downwards, resting on the surface (A) to provide better support to the upper section (11); on the other hand, the intermediate section (13) and the extreme section (14) can be arranged horizontally to support the patient's stretched legs or, alternatively, as seen in FIG. 12 and FIG. 13, the intermediate section (13) and the extreme section (14) can be arranged at an angle to each other, for example, the intermediate section (13) is arranged at an angle of 30º with respect to the support surface (A), while the extreme section (14) is arranged at an angle greater than 90º with respect to the intermediate section (13), with the upper section (11) remaining at an inclined angle with respect to the support surface (A) and the folding support (40) resting on the surface (A). In another example of application of the invention, as shown in FIG. 14 and FIG.15, to allow the patient to adopt an upright sitting position at the edge of the support surface (A), such as for example, to eat while leaning on a side table, the apparatus (1) arranged on a support surface (A), is oriented with the lower platform (32) and the upper platform (31) of the lower rotating mechanism along the edge of the surface (A); the upper section (11) is arranged at a preferred angle close to 90° with respect to the central section (12), while the intermediate section (13) and the extreme section (14) are both arranged vertically aligned at an angle close to -90° with respect to the central section (12). In this case, the folding support (40) is arranged inclined downwards, resting on the surface (A) to provide better support to the upper section (11).In another application example of the invention, according to the feature of the invention that allows its change of orientation in a horizontal plane to assist the patient to get in / out of / into the bed, as shown in FIG. 16, the apparatus (1) is normally located with the lower platform (32) and the upper platform (31) of the lower rotating mechanism transverse to the support surface (A); to allow the patient to get out of bed or from the support surface (A) the upper platform (31) is rotated, while the lower platform (32) remains stable in the same initial transverse position, as seen in FIG.17; while the upper platform (31) rotates in the horizontal plane to be arranged along the support surface (A), causing the central section (12) to also rotate in the horizontal plane, together with the intermediate section (13); simultaneously, the end section (14) of the apparatus folds downwards at a right angle to the intermediate section (13), as seen in FIG. 18, allowing the patient's calves to fold downwards, adopting a sitting position, as illustrated in FIG. 19. In this position, the patient can be assisted by a caregiver to get out, stand up or get out of bed (A), as well as to get back into bed, following the opposite procedure to that just described. In another example of application of the invention, according to the characteristic that allows it to be folded for storage or transportation (see FIG.20), the apparatus (1) can be compacted by arranging its intermediate section (13) and its extreme section (14) horizontally aligned with the central section (12); meanwhile, the upper section (11) folds parallel to the central section (12), together with the folding support (40) that can be folded until it is aligned with the sides of the upper section (11). This arrangement allows the size of the apparatus (1) to be reduced, for example, to be stored in a folded state under a bed (A) as illustrated in FIG. 20, or leaning against a wall, as shown in FIG. 21. Alternatively, the apparatus (1) can also be partially folded to facilitate its storage, as shown in FIG.22, folding the upper section (11) at an angle less than 90º with respect to the central section (11) which remains horizontal; the folding support (40) which can be folded until it is aligned with the sides of the upper section (11); meanwhile, the intermediate section (13) can be folded by folding over the central section (12), while the extreme section (14) can remain parallel to the position adopted by the upper section (11).
