AMBIENT INTERNET OF THINGS DATA REPORT RESOURCES

[0001] FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0002] Aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication and specifically relate to techniques, apparatuses, and methods for ambient internet of things (IoT) data report resources.BACKGROUND

[0003] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various services that may include carrying voice, text, messaging, video, data, and / or other traffic. The services may include unicast, multicast, and / or broadcast services, among other examples. Typical wireless communication systems may employ multiple-access radio access technologies (RATs) capable of supporting communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (for example, time domain resources, frequency domain resources, spatial domain resources, and / or device transmit power, among other examples) . Examples of such multiple-access RATs include code division multiple access (CDMA) systems, time division multiple access (TDMA) systems, frequency division multiple access (FDMA) systems, orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) systems, and time division synchronous code division multiple access (TD-SCDMA) systems.

[0004] The above multiple-access RATs have been adopted in various telecommunication standards to provide common protocols that enable different wireless communication devices to communicate on a municipal, national, regional, or global level. An example telecommunication standard is New Radio (NR) . NR, which may also be referred to as 5G, is part of a continuous mobile broadband evolution promulgated by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) . NR (and other mobile broadband evolutions beyond NR) may be designed to better support Internet of things (IoT) and reduced capability device deployments, industrial connectivity, millimeter wave (mmWave) expansion, licensed and unlicensed spectrum access, non-terrestrial network (NTN) deployment, sidelink and other device-to-device direct communication technologies (for example, cellular vehicle-to-everything (CV2X) communication) , massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) , disaggregated network architectures and network topology expansions, multiple-subscriber implementations, high-precision  positioning, and / or radio frequency (RF) sensing, among other examples. As the demand for mobile broadband access continues to increase, further improvements in NR may be implemented, and other radio access technologies such as 6G may be introduced, to further advance mobile broadband evolution.

[0005] Some emerging ambient internet of things (IoT) use cases may involve ambient IoT devices reporting different types of information (for example, at varying times) . However, a network may be unable to adequately schedule the ambient IoT devices to report the different types of information. For example, RF identification (RFID) communications may involve a one-to-one mapping where a reader connects with only one tag at a time. In such RFID communications, the reader may transmit a read command to request information and the tag may directly respond with the requested information. As a result, RFID communications do not enable the network to assign resources for the tag response. Moreover, the network may be unable to use 3GPP technology to schedule an ambient IoT device to use certain resources to respond with requested information without colliding with other ambient IoT devices. For example, scheduling using the physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) may involve the ambient IoT device performing blind decoding, which may consume excessive power and / or exceed the decoding capability of the ambient IoT device.SUMMARY

[0049] Various aspects of the present disclosure are described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings. However, aspects of the present disclosure may be embodied in many different forms and is not to be construed as limited to any specific aspect illustrated by or described with reference to an accompanying drawing or otherwise presented in this disclosure. Rather, these aspects are provided so that this disclosure will be thorough and complete, and will fully convey the scope of the disclosure to those skilled in the art. One skilled in the art may appreciate that the scope of the disclosure is intended to cover any aspect of the disclosure disclosed herein, whether implemented independently of or in combination with any other aspect of the disclosure. For example, an apparatus may be implemented or a method may be practiced using various combinations or quantities of the aspects set forth herein. In addition, the scope of the disclosure is intended to cover an apparatus having, or a method that is practiced using, other structures and / or functionalities in addition to or other than the structures and / or functionalities with which various aspects of the disclosure set forth herein may be practiced. Any aspect of the disclosure disclosed herein may be embodied by one or more elements of a claim.

[0050] Several aspects of telecommunication systems will now be presented with reference to various methods, operations, apparatuses, and techniques. These methods, operations, apparatuses, and techniques will be described in the following detailed description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings by various blocks, modules, components, circuits, steps, processes, or algorithms (collectively referred to as “elements” ) . These elements may be implemented using hardware, software, or a combination of hardware and software. Whether such elements are implemented as hardware or software depends upon the particular application and design constraints imposed on the overall system.

[0051] Some wireless communication devices may be considered internet of things (IoT) devices, such as ambient IoT devices (sometimes referred to as ultra-light IoT devices) , or similar IoT devices. In ambient IoT, a terminal (for example, a radio  frequency identification (RFID) device, a tag, or a similar device) may not include a battery, and the terminal may accumulate energy from radio signaling. To achieve further cost reduction and zero-power communication, wireless networks may utilize a type of ambient IoT device referred to as an “ambient backscatter device” or a “backscatter device. ” Some emerging use cases for ambient IoT devices may involve the ambient IoT devices reporting different types of information (for example, at varying times) .

[0052] However, a network may be unable to adequately schedule the ambient IoT devices to report the different types of information. For example, RFID communications may involve a one-to-one mapping where a reader connects with only one tag at a time. In such RFID communications, the reader may transmit a read command to request information, and the tag may directly respond with the requested information. As a result, RFID communications do not enable the network to assign resources for the tag response. Moreover, the network may be unable to use 3GPP techniques to schedule an ambient IoT device to use certain resources to respond with requested information without colliding with other ambient IoT devices. For example, scheduling using the physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) may involve the ambient IoT device performing blind decoding, which may consume excessive power and / or exceed the decoding capability of the ambient IoT device.

[0053] Various aspects relate generally to resources for ambient IoT data reports. Some aspects more specifically relate to implementations for scheduling and resource allocation for ambient IoT devices to transmit reporting information (for example, data reports) . For example, the network node may indicate, to an ambient IoT device, time resources and / or frequency resources that the ambient IoT device may use to transmit a data report.

[0054] In some aspects, the network (for example, a network node) may predefine a mapping (e.g., a mapping rule) associting a read command with one or more resources. Upon receiving the read command from the network, the ambient IoT device may transmit, to the network node, a data report using the one or more resources. The read command may include a bit field that indicates which type (s) of data are to be reported, or multiple bit fields that indicate multiple locations of memory of the ambient IoT device.

[0055] In some aspects, the network node may transmit, to the ambient IoT device, a control signal that is associated with one or more resources and indicates data report information. The ambient IoT device may respond to the control signal by transmitting a data report using the one or more resources. In some examples, the control signal may include a bit field that indicates a type of data report that the ambient IoT device is to  report. The length of the bit field may be common to multiple ambient IoT devices or depend on a function of the ambient IoT device. In some examples, the control signal may be associated with a quantity of retransmissions associated with the data report. In some examples, the network node may predefine a mapping (e.g., a mapping rule) between the control signal and the one or more resources.

[0056] In some aspects, the network node and the ambient IoT device may switch between a first data report transmission scheme and a second data report transmission scheme. In the first data report transmission scheme, the network node may predefine a mapping (e.g., a mapping rule) between the read command or the control signal and the one or more resources. In the second data report transmission scheme, the control signal may carry an indication of the one or more resources. The network node and the ambient IoT device may switch from the first data report transmission scheme to the second data report transmission scheme, or from the second data report transmission scheme to the first data report transmission scheme.

[0057] Particular aspects of the subject matter described in this disclosure can be implemented to realize one or more of the following potential advantages. In some examples, by predefining a mapping associating a read command to one or more resources, the described techniques can be used to schedule ambient IoT devices to transmit data reports with few or no collisions. Furthermore, because the one or more resources are mapped to the read command, the read command may avoid carrying an indication of the one or more resources, thereby reducing overhead and conserving power at the ambient IoT device.

[0058] The read command including a bit field that indicates which type (s) of data are to be reported may enable the ambient IoT device to report one type of data report at a time. The read command including multiple bit fields that indicate multiple locations of memory of the ambient IoT device may enable the ambient IoT device to report more than one type of data report at a time (for example, using a single read command) .

[0059] The control signal being associated with one or more resources may enable the network node to schedule ambient IoT devices to transmit data reports with few or no collisions. Moreover, the network node may schedule the ambient IoT devices dynamically (for example, in cases where the control signal indicates the one or more resources) and / or with reduced overhead and power consumption at the ambient IoT device (for example, in cases where the control signal is mapped to the one or more resources with a mapping rule) . For example, in cases involving switching between the  first data report transmission scheme and the second data report transmission scheme, the network node may continue to transmit the same type of signal (for example, the control signal) regardless of which data report transmission scheme is switched to at any given time.

[0060] The length of the bit field being common to multiple ambient IoT devices may reduce complexity at the network node because the network node may avoid identifying the length of the bit field. The length of the bit field depending on a function of the ambient IoT device may enable the length of the bit field to be reduced, thereby reducing power consumption at the ambient IoT device. Furthermore, the probability of a false alarm may be reduced. The probability of a false alarm may be the probability that another ambient IoT device, having a different functionality than the ambient IoT device, but the same device identifier, responds to the control signal. The probability of a false alarm may be reduced because the length of the bit field may not match the expected bit field length for the functionality of the other ambient IoT device.

[0061] The control signal being associated with the quantity of retransmissions associated with the data report may offer numerous potential advantages. For example, a bit field of the control signal indicating the quantity of retransmissions may enable the network node to dynamically indicate the quantity of retransmissions. The quantity of retransmissions being configured may reduce power consumed at the ambient IoT device because the control signal may avoid carrying an indication of the quantity of retransmissions. Implementing a combination of the bit field and the configured quantity of retransmissions may provide flexibility for the network node.

[0062] Predefining a mapping between the control signal and the one or more resources may reduce the power consumed at the ambient IoT device because the control signal may avoid carrying an indication of the one or more resources.

[0063] Switching between a first data report transmission scheme and a second data report transmission scheme may enable a flexible implementation of a combination of the first data report transmission scheme and the second data report transmission scheme. For example, the switching signal may enable the network node and / or the ambient IoT device to identify whether the first data report transmission scheme or the second data report transmission scheme is to be used. As a result, the network node and the ambient IoT device may remain synchronized in terms of data report transmission schemes and, thus, signaling errors may be reduced.

[0064] Switching from the first data report transmission scheme to the second data report transmission scheme may reduce overhead and conserve power at the ambient IoT device. Switching from the second data report transmission scheme to the first data report transmission scheme may enable dynamic scheduling for the ambient IoT device.

[0065] Multiple-access radio access technologies (RATs) have been adopted in various telecommunication standards to provide common protocols that enable wireless communication devices to communicate on a municipal, enterprise, national, regional, or global level. For example, 5G New Radio (NR) is part of a continuous mobile broadband evolution promulgated by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) . 5G NR supports various technologies and use cases including enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) , ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) , massive machine-type communication (mMTC) , millimeter wave (mmWave) technology, beamforming, network slicing, edge computing, Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity and management, and network function virtualization (NFV) .

[0066] As the demand for broadband access increases and as technologies supported by wireless communication networks evolve, further technological improvements may be adopted in or implemented for 5G NR or future RATs, such as 6G, to further advance the evolution of wireless communication for a wide variety of existing and new use cases and applications. Such technological improvements may be associated with new frequency band expansion, licensed and unlicensed spectrum access, overlapping spectrum use, small cell deployments, non-terrestrial network (NTN) deployments, disaggregated network architectures and network topology expansion, device aggregation, advanced duplex communication, sidelink and other device-to-device direct communication, IoT (including passive or ambient IoT) networks, reduced capability (RedCap) UE functionality, industrial connectivity, multiple-subscriber implementations, high-precision positioning, radio frequency (RF) sensing, and / or artificial intelligence or machine learning (AI / ML) , among other examples. These technological improvements may support use cases such as wireless backhauls, wireless data centers, extended reality (XR) and metaverse applications, meta services for supporting vehicle connectivity, holographic and mixed reality communication, autonomous and collaborative robots, vehicle platooning and cooperative maneuvering, sensing networks, gesture monitoring, human-brain interfacing, digital twin applications, asset management, and universal coverage applications using non-terrestrial and / or aerial platforms, among other examples. The methods, operations, apparatuses, and techniques described herein may  enable one or more of the foregoing technologies and / or support one or more of the foregoing use cases.

[0067] Figure 1 is a diagram illustrating an example of a wireless communication network 100 in accordance with the present disclosure. The wireless communication network 100 may be or may include elements of a 5G (or NR) network or a 6G network, among other examples. The wireless communication network 100 may include multiple network nodes 110, shown as a network node (NN) 110a, a network node 110b, a network node 110c, and a network node 110d. The network nodes 110 may support communications with multiple UEs 120, shown as a UE 120a, a UE 120b, a UE 120c, a UE 120d, and a UE 120e.

[0068] The network nodes 110 and the UEs 120 of the wireless communication network 100 may communicate using the electromagnetic spectrum, which may be subdivided by frequency or wavelength into various classes, bands, carriers, and / or channels. For example, devices of the wireless communication network 100 may communicate using one or more operating bands. In some aspects, multiple wireless communication networks 100 may be deployed in a given geographic area. Each wireless communication network 100 may support a particular radio access technology (RAT) (which may also be referred to as an air interface) and may operate on one or more carrier frequencies in one or more frequency ranges. Examples of RATs include a 4G RAT, a 5G / NR RAT, and / or a 6G RAT, among other examples. In some examples, when multiple RATs are deployed in a given geographic area, each RAT in the geographic area may operate on different frequencies to avoid interference with one another.

[0069] Various operating bands have been defined as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz through 7.125 GHz) , FR2 (24.25 GHz through 52.6 GHz) , FR3 (7.125 GHz through 24.25 GHz) , FR4a or FR4-1 (52.6 GHz through 71 GHz) , FR4 (52.6 GHz through 114.25 GHz) , and FR5 (114.25 GHz through 300 GHz) . Although a portion of FR1 is greater than 6 GHz, FR1 is often referred to (interchangeably) as a “Sub-6 GHz” band in some documents and articles. Similarly, FR2 is often referred to (interchangeably) as a “millimeter wave” band in some documents and articles, despite being different than the extremely high frequency (EHF) band (30 GHz through 300 GHz) , which is identified by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as a “millimeter wave” band. The frequencies between FR1 and FR2 are often referred to as mid-band frequencies, which include FR3. Frequency bands falling within FR3 may inherit FR1 characteristics or FR2 characteristics, and thus may effectively extend  features of FR1 or FR2 into mid-band frequencies. Thus, “sub-6 GHz, ” if used herein, may broadly refer to frequencies that are less than 6 GHz, that are within FR1, and / or that are included in mid-band frequencies. Similarly, the term “millimeter wave, ” if used herein, may broadly refer to frequencies that are included in mid-band frequencies, that are within FR2, FR4, FR4-a or FR4-1, or FR5, and / or that are within the EHF band. Higher frequency bands may extend 5G NR operation, 6G operation, and / or other RATs beyond 52.6 GHz. For example, each of FR4a, FR4-1, FR4, and FR5 falls within the EHF band. In some examples, the wireless communication network 100 may implement dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) , in which multiple RATs (for example, 4G  / Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and 5G / NR) are implemented with dynamic bandwidth allocation (for example, based on user demand) in a single frequency band. It is contemplated that the frequencies included in these operating bands (for example, FR1, FR2, FR3, FR4, FR4-a, FR4-1, and / or FR5) may be modified, and techniques described herein may be applicable to those modified frequency ranges.

[0070] A network node 110 may include one or more devices, components, or systems that enable communication between a UE 120 and one or more devices, components, or systems of the wireless communication network 100. A network node 110 may be, may include, or may also be referred to as an NR network node, a 5G network node, a 6G network node, a Node B, an eNB, a gNB, an access point (AP) , a transmission reception point (TRP) , a mobility element, a core, a network entity, a network element, a network equipment, and / or another type of device, component, or system included in a radio access network (RAN) .

[0071] A network node 110 may be implemented as a single physical node (for example, a single physical structure) or may be implemented as two or more physical nodes (for example, two or more distinct physical structures) . For example, a network node 110 may be a device or system that implements part of a radio protocol stack, a device or system that implements a full radio protocol stack (such as a full gNB protocol stack) , or a collection of devices or systems that collectively implement the full radio protocol stack. For example, and as shown, a network node 110 may be an aggregated network node (having an aggregated architecture) , meaning that the network node 110 may implement a full radio protocol stack that is physically and logically integrated within a single node (for example, a single physical structure) in the wireless communication network 100. For example, an aggregated network node 110 may consist of a single standalone base station or a single TRP that uses a full radio protocol stack to  enable or facilitate communication between a UE 120 and a core network of the wireless communication network 100.

[0072] Alternatively, and as also shown, a network node 110 may be a disaggregated network node (sometimes referred to as a disaggregated base station) , meaning that the network node 110 may implement a radio protocol stack that is physically distributed and / or logically distributed among two or more nodes in the same geographic location or in different geographic locations. For example, a disaggregated network node may have a disaggregated architecture. In some deployments, disaggregated network nodes 110 may be used in an integrated access and backhaul (IAB) network, in an open radio access network (O-RAN) (such as a network configuration in compliance with the O-RAN Alliance) , or in a virtualized radio access network (vRAN) , also known as a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) , to facilitate scaling by separating base station functionality into multiple units that can be individually deployed.

[0073] The network nodes 110 of the wireless communication network 100 may include one or more central units (CUs) , one or more distributed units (DUs) , and / or one or more radio units (RUs) . A CU may host one or more higher layer control functions, such as radio resource control (RRC) functions, packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) functions, and / or service data adaptation protocol (SDAP) functions, among other examples. A DU may host one or more of a radio link control (RLC) layer, a medium access control (MAC) layer, and / or one or more higher physical (PHY) layers depending, at least in part, on a functional split, such as a functional split defined by the 3GPP. In some examples, a DU also may host one or more lower PHY layer functions, such as a fast Fourier transform (FFT) , an inverse FFT (iFFT) , beamforming, physical random access channel (PRACH) extraction and filtering, and / or scheduling of resources for one or more UEs 120, among other examples. An RU may host RF processing functions or lower PHY layer functions, such as an FFT, an iFFT, beamforming, or PRACH extraction and filtering, among other examples, according to a functional split, such as a lower layer functional split. In such an architecture, each RU can be operated to handle over the air (OTA) communication with one or more UEs 120.

[0074] In some aspects, a single network node 110 may include a combination of one or more CUs, one or more DUs, and / or one or more RUs. Additionally or alternatively, a network node 110 may include one or more Near-Real Time (Near-RT) RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs) and / or one or more Non-Real Time (Non-RT) RICs. In some examples, a CU, a DU, and / or an RU may be implemented as a virtual unit, such as a  virtual central unit (VCU) , a virtual distributed unit (VDU) , or a virtual radio unit (VRU) , among other examples. A virtual unit may be implemented as a virtual network function, such as associated with a cloud deployment.

[0075] Some network nodes 110 (for example, a base station, an RU, or a TRP) may provide communication coverage for a particular geographic area. In the 3GPP, the term “cell” can refer to a coverage area of a network node 110 or to a network node 110 itself, depending on the context in which the term is used. A network node 110 may support one or multiple (for example, three) cells. In some examples, a network node 110 may provide communication coverage for a macro cell, a pico cell, a femto cell, or another type of cell. A macro cell may cover a relatively large geographic area (for example, several kilometers in radius) and may allow unrestricted access by UEs 120 with service subscriptions. A pico cell may cover a relatively small geographic area and may allow unrestricted access by UEs 120 with service subscriptions. A femto cell may cover a relatively small geographic area (for example, a home) and may allow restricted access by UEs 120 having association with the femto cell (for example, UEs 120 in a closed subscriber group (CSG) ) . A network node 110 for a macro cell may be referred to as a macro network node. A network node 110 for a pico cell may be referred to as a pico network node. A network node 110 for a femto cell may be referred to as a femto network node or an in-home network node.

[0076] The wireless communication network 100 may be a heterogeneous network that includes network nodes 110 of different types, such as macro network nodes, pico network nodes, femto network nodes, relay network nodes, aggregated network nodes, and / or disaggregated network nodes, among other examples. In the example shown in Figure 1, the network node 110a may be a macro network node for a macro cell 130a, the network node 110b may be a pico network node for a pico cell 130b, and the network node 110c may be a femto network node for a femto cell 130c. Various different types of network nodes 110 may generally transmit at different power levels, serve different coverage areas, and / or have different impacts on interference in the wireless communication network 100 than other types of network nodes 110. For example, macro network nodes may have a high transmit power level (for example, 5 to 40 watts) , whereas pico network nodes, femto network nodes, and relay network nodes may have lower transmit power levels (for example, 0.1 to 2 watts) .

[0077] In some examples, a network node 110 may be, may include, or may operate as an RU, a TRP, or a base station that communicates with one or more UEs 120 via a radio  access link (which may be referred to as a “Uu” link) . The radio access link may include a downlink and an uplink. “Downlink” (or “DL” ) refers to a communication direction from a network node 110 to a UE 120, and “uplink” (or “UL” ) refers to a communication direction from a UE 120 to a network node 110.

[0078] In some examples, any network node 110 that relays communications may be referred to as a relay network node, a relay station, or simply as a relay. A relay may receive a transmission of a communication from an upstream station (for example, another network node 110 or a UE 120) and transmit the communication to a downstream station (for example, a UE 120 or another network node 110) . In this case, the wireless communication network 100 may include or be referred to as a “multi-hop network. ” In the example shown in Figure 1, the network node 110d (for example, a relay network node) may communicate with the network node 110a (for example, a macro network node) and the UE 120d in order to facilitate communication between the network node 110a and the UE 120d. Additionally or alternatively, a UE 120 may be or may operate as a relay station that can relay transmissions to or from other UEs 120. A UE 120 that relays communications may be referred to as a UE relay or a relay UE, among other examples.

[0079] The UEs 120 may be physically dispersed throughout the wireless communication network 100, and each UE 120 may be stationary or mobile. A UE 120 may be, may include, or may be included in an access terminal, another terminal, a mobile station, or a subscriber unit. A UE 120 may be, include, or be coupled with a cellular phone (for example, a smart phone) , a personal digital assistant (PDA) , a wireless modem, a wireless communication device, a handheld device, a laptop computer, a cordless phone, a wireless local loop (WLL) station, a tablet, a camera, a gaming device, a netbook, a smartbook, an ultrabook, a medical device, a biometric device, a wearable device (for example, a smart watch, smart clothing, smart glasses, a smart wristband, and / or smart jewelry, such as a smart ring or a smart bracelet) , an entertainment device (for example, a music device, a video device, and / or a satellite radio) , an extended reality (XR) device, a vehicular component or sensor, a smart meter or sensor, industrial manufacturing equipment, a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) device (such as a Global Positioning System device or another type of positioning device) , a UE function of a network node, and / or any other suitable device or function that may communicate via a wireless medium.

[0080] A UE 120 and / or a network node 110 may include one or more chips, system-on-chips (SoCs) , chipsets, packages, or devices that individually or collectively constitute or comprise a processing system. The processing system includes processor (or “processing” ) circuitry in the form of one or multiple processors, microprocessors, processing units (such as central processing units (CPUs) , graphics processing units (GPUs) , neural processing units (NPUs) and / or digital signal processors (DSPs) ) , processing blocks, application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) , programmable logic devices (PLDs) (such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) ) , or other discrete gate or transistor logic or circuitry (all of which may be generally referred to herein individually as “processors” or collectively as “the processor” or “the processor circuitry” ) . One or more of the processors may be individually or collectively configurable or configured to perform various functions or operations described herein. A group of processors collectively configurable or configured to perform a set of functions may include a first processor configurable or configured to perform a first function of the set and a second processor configurable or configured to perform a second function of the set, or may include the group of processors all being configured or configurable to perform the set of functions.

[0081] The processing system may further include memory circuitry in the form of one or more memory devices, memory blocks, memory elements or other discrete gate or transistor logic or circuitry, each of which may include tangible storage media such as random-access memory (RAM) or read-only memory (ROM) , or combinations thereof (all of which may be generally referred to herein individually as “memories” or collectively as “the memory” or “the memory circuitry” ) . One or more of the memories may be coupled (for example, operatively coupled, communicatively coupled, electronically coupled, or electrically coupled) with one or more of the processors and may individually or collectively store processor-executable code (such as software) that, when executed by one or more of the processors, may configure one or more of the processors to perform various functions or operations described herein. Additionally or alternatively, in some examples, one or more of the processors may be preconfigured to perform various functions or operations described herein without requiring configuration by software. The processing system may further include or be coupled with one or more modems (such as a Wi-Fi (for example, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) compliant) modem or a cellular (for example, 3GPP 4G LTE, 5G, or 6G compliant) modem) . In some implementations, one or more processors of the processing  system include or implement one or more of the modems. The processing system may further include or be coupled with multiple radios (collectively “the radio” ) , multiple RF chains, or multiple transceivers, each of which may in turn be coupled with one or more of multiple antennas. In some implementations, one or more processors of the processing system include or implement one or more of the radios, RF chains or transceivers. The UE 120 may include or may be included in a housing that houses components associated with the UE 120 including the processing system.

[0082] In some examples, two or more UEs 120 (for example, shown as UE 120a and UE 120e) may communicate directly with one another using sidelink communications (for example, without communicating by way of a network node 110 as an intermediary) . As an example, the UE 120a may directly transmit data, control information, or other signaling as a sidelink communication to the UE 120e. This is in contrast to, for example, the UE 120a first transmitting data in an UL communication to a network node 110, which then transmits the data to the UE 120e in a DL communication.

[0106] Some wireless communication devices may be considered IoT devices, such as ambient IoT devices (sometimes referred to as ultra-light IoT devices) , or similar IoT devices. In ambient IoT, a terminal (for example, an RFID device, a tag, or a similar device) may not include a battery, and the terminal may accumulate energy from radio signaling. To achieve further cost reduction and zero-power communication, wireless networks may utilize a type of ambient IoT device referred to as an “ambient backscatter device” or a “backscatter device. ”

[0107] As shown in Figure 3, a backscatter device 305 (for example, a tag or a sensor, among other examples) , which may be one example of an ambient IoT device, may employ a simplified hardware design (for example, including a power splitter, an energy harvester, and a microcontroller) that does not include a battery, such that the backscatter device 305 relies on energy harvesting for power, and that does not include a radio wave  generation circuit, such that the backscatter device 305 is capable of transmitting information only by reflecting a radio wave. More particularly, the backscatter device 305 communicates with a reader 308 (for example, a UE 120, a network node 110, or another network device) by modulating a reflecting radio signal from a radio frequency (RF) source 310 (for example, a network node 110, a UE 120, or another network device) . In some examples, the RF source 310 and the reader 308 may be the same device and / or may be co-located. For example, in some instances, the reader 308 and the RF source 310 may be associated with the same network node 110.

[0108] To facilitate communication of the backscatter device 305, the RF source 310 may transmit an energy harvesting wave to the backscatter device 305. The energy harvesting wave may be transmitted for a sufficient duration in order to enable a communication phase for a target range between the reader 308 and the backscatter device 305. Additionally or alternatively, in some instances, a range between the RF source 310 and the backscatter device 305 may be limited by a minimum received power for triggering energy harvesting at the backscatter device 305, such as -20 decibel milliwatts (dBm) .

[0109] Once energy is sufficiently accumulated at the backscatter device 305, the backscatter device 305 may begin to reflect the radio wave that is radiated onto the backscatter device 305 via a backscatter link 315. For example, the RF source 310 may initiate a communication session (sometimes referred to as a query-response communication) with a query, which may be a modulating envelope of a continuous wave (CW) . The backscatter device 305 may respond by backscattering of the CW. The communication session may include multiple rounds, such as for purposes of contention resolution when multiple backscatter devices respond to a query. A channel between the RF source 310 and the backscatter device 305 of the backscatter link 315 may be associated with a first backscatter link channel response value (sometimes referred to as a first backscatter link channel coefficient or a first backscatter link gain value) , hBD. As described below, the backscatter device 305 may have reflection-on periods and reflection-off periods that follow a pattern that is based at least in part on the transmission of information bits by the backscatter device 305. The reader 308 may detect the reflection pattern of the backscatter device 305 and obtain the backscatter communication information via the backscatter link 315. A channel between the reader 308 and the backscatter device 305 of the backscatter link 315 may be associated with a second backscatter link channel response value (sometimes referred to as a second backscatter  link channel coefficient or a second backscatter link channel gain value) , hDU. In addition, the RF source 310 and the reader 308 may communicate (for example, reference signals and / or data signals) via a direct link 320. A channel between the RF source 310 and the reader 308 of the direct link 320 may be associated with a direct link channel response value (sometimes referred to as a direct link channel coefficient or a direct link channel gain value) , hBU.

[0110] The backscatter device 305 may use an information modulation scheme, such as amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulation or on-off keying (OOK) modulation. For ASK or OOK modulation, the backscatter device 305 may switch on reflection when transmitting an information bit “1” and switch off reflection when transmitting an information bit “0. ” In backscatter communication, the RF source 310 may transmit a particular radio wave (for example, a reference signal or a data signal, such as a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) ) , which may be denoted as x (n) . The reader 308 may receive this radio wave, x (n) , directly from the RF source 310 via the direct link 320, as well as from the backscatter device 305 modulating and reflecting the radio wave to the reader 308 via the backscatter link 315. The signal received at the reader 308 via the direct link 320, indicated by reference number 325, is the product of the radio wave transmitted by the RF source 310, x (n) , multiplied by the direct link channel response value, hBU, plus any signal noise. The information bits signal of the backscatter device 305 may be denoted as s (n) where s (n) ∈ {0, 1} . Accordingly, the signal received at the reader 308 via the backscatter link 315, indicated by reference number 330, is the product of the signal transmitted by the RF source 310, x (n) , multiplied by the first backscatter link channel response value, hBD, the second backscatter link channel response value, hDU, the information bits signal from the backscatter device 305, s (n) , and a reflection coefficient associated with the backscatter device 305 plus any noise.

[0111] Thus, the resulting signal received at the reader 308, which is the superposition of the signal received via the direct link 320 and the signal received via the backscatter link 315, may be denoted as y (n) . This signal, y (n) , is shown by reference number 335. As shown, when s (n) =0 (indicated by reference number 340 in the plot shown at reference number 330) , the backscatter device 305 may switch off reflection, and thus the reader 308 receives only the direct link 320 signal. When s (n) =1 (indicated by reference number 345 in the plot shown at reference number 330) , the backscatter device 305 may switch on reflection, and thus the reader 308 receives a superposition of both the direct link 320 signal and the backscatter link 315 signal. To receive the information bits  transmitted by the backscatter device 305, the reader 308 may first decode x (n) based at least in part on the direct link channel response value of h_BU (n) by treating the backscatter link 315 signal as interference. The reader 308 may then detect the existence of the signal component. In some instances, the backscatter device 305 may not maintain a state from communication session to communication session except of what is stored in the backscatter device 305 memory, such as an electronic product code (EPC) associated with backscatter device 305 or similar information.

[0112] Figures 4A and 4B are diagrams illustrating examples 400A and 400B associated with parameters for ambient IoT device use cases.

[0113] Two sets, or levels, of grouping are defined for ambient IoT devices: grouping A and grouping B. Grouping A groups ambient IoT devices on the basis of deployment environment (s) , such as indoor, outdoor, and indoor / outdoor. Grouping B groups ambient IoT devices on the basis of functionality or application, such as inventory, sensors, positioning, and command. Example 400A (Figure 4A) shows parameters for an inventory use case for, and example 400B (Figure 4B) shows parameters for a sensor use cases. The parameters may include environment 410, use case 420, message size 430, report data 440, reporting period 450, latency 460, positioning accuracy 470, device density 480, and moving speed 490.

[0114] Figure 5 is a diagram illustrating examples 500 and 505 associated with a read command.

[0115] Example 500 shows an example read command. As shown, the read command includes command bits 510, memory bank (MemBank) bits 515, word pointer (WordPtr) bits 520, word count (WordCount) bits 525, random number (RN) bits 530, and cyclic redundancy check (CRC) 16 (CRC-16) bits 535. In the context of RFID communications, a read command allows an interrogator (for example, a reader) to read part or all of reserved memory, EPC memory, tag identifier (TID) memory, or user memory of a tag (for example, an ambient IoT device) . For example, the interrogator may use the MemBank bits 515 to specify which of the reserved memory, EPC memory, TID memory, or user memory is to be read.

[0116] The reserved memory may contain a kill password and / or an access password. The EPC memory may contain a stored CRC (StoredCRC) at memory addresses 00h to 0Fh, a stored protocol control word (StoredPC) at addresses 10h to 1Fh, a code (for example, an EPC) that identifies the object to which the tag is or will be attached beginning at address 20h, and, if the tag implements extended protocol control (XPC) ,  then one or two XPC word (s) beginning at address 210h. The TID memory may contain an 8-bit allocation class identifier at memory locations 00h to 07h. The TID memory may contain sufficient identifying information above 07h for an interrogator to uniquely identify any custom commands and / or optional features that a tag supports. The user memory may allow user-specific data storage.

[0117] Example 505 shows a tag reply to a successful read command. As shown, the tag reply includes a header bit 540, memory words 545, RN bits 550, and CRC-16 bits 555.

[0118] The ambient IoT device use cases discussed in connection with Figures 4A and 4B may involve various ambient IoT devices reporting different types of information (for example, at varying times) . However, it is unclear how a network can schedule the ambient IoT devices to report the different types of information. For example, RFID communications may involve a one-to-one mapping where a reader connects with only one tag at a time. In such RFID communications, the reader may transmit a read command to request information and the tag may respond directly (for example, using backscattering techniques) with requested information. As a result, RFID communications do not enable the network to assign resources for the tag response. In the 3GPP context, it is unclear how the network can schedule an ambient IoT device to use certain resources to respond with requested information without colliding with transmissions from other ambient IoT devices scheduled to respond at the same time as the ambient IoT device. For example, using PDCCH-based scheduling may involve the ambient IoT device performing blind decoding, which may consume excessive power and / or exceed the decoding capability of the ambient IoT device.

[0119] Figure 6 is a diagram illustrating an example 600 associated with a read command mapped to one or more resources for data report transmission. As shown in Figure 6, a network node 110 and an ambient IoT device 610 may communicate with one another. In some examples, the ambient IoT device 610 may correspond to the UE 120.

[0120] In a first operation 620, the network node 110 may transmit, and the ambient IoT device may receive, an indication of a mapping associating a read command with one or more resources. For example, the indication may configure (for example, define, pre-define, or pre-configure, among other examples) a mapping rule between the read command and the one or more resources for the ambient IoT device 610 to respond to the read command. For example, the indication may configure the ambient IoT device 610 to use the one or more resources to transmit a data report in response to the read command.  In some examples, the indication may indicate an MCS to be used for the response (for example, the data report) .

[0121] In some aspects, the one or more resources may include one or more time resources. In some examples, the indication may indicate a start position (for example, time) of the response to the read command. For example, the indication may indicate a time gap between a time at which the ambient IoT device 610 receives the read command and a starting position (for example, time) of the response. Additionally or alternatively, the indication may indicate an absolute time for the response. In some examples, the indication may indicate an end position (for example, time) of the response to the read command. For example, the indication may configure a quantity of retransmissions (for example, required retransmissions) of the response or a duration (for example, an allowed duration) for transmission of the response, among other examples.

[0122] In some aspects, the one or more resources include one or more frequency resources. For example, the indication may indicate the frequency resource (s) that the ambient IoT device 610 is to use to transmit the response. For example, the indication may indicate a frequency shift relative to a frequency at which the read command is carried (for example, the indication may indicate the frequency shift compared with the downlink transmission of the read command) .

[0123] In a second operation 630, the network node may transmit, and the ambient IoT device 610 may receive, the read command. In some aspects, the read command may indicate that data contained in the data report is stored in user memory of a MemBank. In some examples, if the ambient IoT device 610 can support only one type of data report, then the value of MemBank may be set to 11. In some examples, if the ambient IoT device 610 can support more than one type of data report, and if the ambient IoT device 610 is to report one type of data report at a time, then the MemBank set to 11 may point to the data to be included in the data report.

[0124] In some aspects, the read command may include a bit field that indicates a data report type of the data report. For example, if the ambient IoT device 610 can support more than one type of data report, and if the ambient IoT device 610 is to report more than one type of data report at a time, then the read command may include a bit field that indicates the type of data report to be read. For example, the bit map may indicate which type (s) of data are to be reported.

[0125] In some aspects, the read command may include a plurality of bit fields that indicate respective memory locations of data contained in the data report. For example, if  the ambient IoT device 610 can support more than one type of data report, and if the ambient IoT device 610 is to report more than one type of data report at a time, then the read command may include multiple bit fields that indicate more than one locations of memory of the ambient IoT device 610.

[0126] In a third operation 640, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit, and the network node 110 may receive, responsive to the read command and in accordance with the mapping, a data report using the one or more resources. For example, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit the data report in the one or more resources mapped to the read command by the mapping rule. The data report may contain any suitable type of data. For example, the data report may contain inventory data (for example, in an inventory use case) , sensor data (for example, in a sensor use case) , or positioning data (for example, in a positioning use case) , among other examples.

[0127] In some aspects, the data report may include a device identifier associated with the ambient IoT device 610 or a group identifier associated with the ambient IoT device 610. For example, upon receiving the read command, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit all of the corresponding measurement data with the device identifier and / or the group identifier. For example, if the ambient IoT device 610 is a temperature sensor, then, upon receiving the read command, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit the temperature along with the device identifier and / or the group identifier.

[0128] Figure 7 is a diagram illustrating examples 700 and 710 associated with the resource (s) mapped to the read command.

[0129] In example 700, the ambient IoT device 610 cannot support frequency shifting, and the mapping associates the read command with one or more time resources. For example, the indication may indicate a time gap, T1, between a time at which the ambient IoT device 610 receives the read command and the starting position of the response. The indication may also indicate a quantity of retransmissions (for example, N retransmissions) for the response and / or a duration for transmission of the response. As a result, upon receiving the read command from the network node 110, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit the response (for example, the data report) starting after the time gap T1 and ending in accordance with the quantity of retransmissions and / or the duration for transmission. Thus, the one or more resources may include one or more time resources in cases where the ambient IoT device 610 cannot support frequency shifting.

[0130] In example 710, the ambient IoT device 610 can support frequency shifting, and the mapping associates the read command to one or more time resources and to one or  more frequency resources. For example, in addition to indicating the time gap T1, the quantity of retransmissions, and / or the duration for transmission, the indication may also indicate the frequency shift, Δf, compared with the downlink transmission of the read command. As a result, upon receiving the read command from the network node 110, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit the response (for example, the data report) starting after the time gap T1, ending in accordance with the quantity of retransmissions and / or the duration for transmission, and at one or more frequencies as indicated by Δf. Thus, the one or more resources may include one or more time resources and one or more frequency resources in cases where the ambient IoT device 610 can support frequency shifting.

[0131] Figure 8 is a diagram illustrating examples 800, 810, and 820 associated with communications associated with the read command.

[0132] In examples 800 and 810, the ambient IoT device 610 may be capable of reporting more than one type of data report. Example 800 illustrates a read command that includes a bit field that indicates a data report type of the data report. For example, the bit field may be the sub-MemBank field. Example 810 illustrates a read command that includes a plurality of bit fields that indicate respective memory locations of data contained in the data report. For example, the plurality of bit fields may be the MemBank, WordPtr, and WordCount fields. Example 820 illustrates a tag reply to a successful read command. For example, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit the tag reply responsive to receiving the read command. As shown, the tag reply may include the data report (for example, a sensor-based report) .

[0133] Figure 9 is a diagram illustrating an example 900 associated with a control signal associated with one or more resources for data report transmission. As shown in Figure 9, a network node 110 and an ambient IoT device 610 may communicate with one another.

[0134] In a first operation 910, the network node may transmit, and the ambient IoT device 610 may receive, a control signal. The control signal may be associated with one or more resources and may indicate data report information. In some examples, the ambient IoT device may be configured to use the one or more resources to respond to the control signal with a data report in accordance with the data report information. As described herein, the control signal may be associated with the one or more resources in that the control signal may indicate the one or more resources (for example, the control signal may indicate both the data report information and a resource allocation of the one  or more resources for the ambient IoT device 610 to respond with the data report) , or the control signal may be associated with the one or more resources in that the control signal may be mapped to the one or more resources (for example, the resource allocation) by a mapping rule. In some examples, the control signal may be a DCI-like signal (for example, a command) .

[0135] In some examples, the control signal may include a bit field that indicates the data report information. For example, the data report information indicated in the control signal may include an indication of a type of data report that the ambient IoT device 610 is to report in response to the control signal. In some aspects, a length of the bit field may be fixed. For example, the length of the bit field may be common for all ambient IoT devices (including ambient IoT device 610) , and the interpretation of the bit field by the ambient IoT device 610 may depend on the ambient IoT use case. For example, if the length of the bit field is three or more bits, then how the ambient IoT device 610 interprets the bit field may depend on how the ambient IoT device 610 is used. For example, if the ambient IoT device 610 is used for smart manhole cover safety monitoring, then the bit field containing 000 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to respond with a device identifier and / or group identifier of the ambient IoT device 610; the bit field containing 001 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to respond with temperature data (for example, measured temperature) ; the bit field containing 010 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to respond with positioning data (for example, a signal for positioning) ; the bit field containing 011 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to respond with vibration data (for example, a measured vibration) ; the bit field containing 100 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to respond with water level data; the bit field containing 101 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to respond with both temperature data and positioning data; the bit field containing 110 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to respond with both water level data and positioning data; and the bit field containing 111 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to respond with all such information (for example, the device identifier and / or group identifier, temperature data, positioning data, vibration data, or water level data, among other examples) . If the ambient IoT device 610 is used for smart agriculture, then the bit field containing 000 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to report a temperature of an underground heating tube; the bit field containing 001 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to report a concentration of carbon dioxide; the bit field containing 010 may indicate that the ambient IoT device  610 is to report whether a fan is open; and the bit field containing 011 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to report whether each tomato is receiving sufficient nutrients.

[0136] In some aspects, the length of the bit field may be associated with one or more data report types associated with the ambient IoT device 610. The one or more data report types may be associated with the ambient IoT device 610 in that the ambient IoT device 610 may be configured to transmit data reports of one or more data report types (for example, depending on the function of the ambient IoT device 610) . The length of the bit field may be associated with the one or more data report types in that the length of the bit field may be specified depending on the function of the ambient IoT device 610. For example, if the ambient IoT device 610 is used to monitor temperature data and positioning data, then the length of the bit field may be two bits, where the bit field containing 00 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to report a device identifier of the ambient IoT device 610; the bit field containing 01 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to report the temperature data; the bit field containing 10 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to report the positioning data; and the bit field containing 11 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to report all such information (for example, the device identifier, the temperature data, or the positioning data, among other examples) . If the ambient IoT device 610 is used to monitor temperature data, then the length of the bit field may be one bit, where the bit field containing 0 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to report a device identifier and / or a group identifier of the ambient IoT device 610; and the bit field containing 1 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to report the temperature data.

[0137] In some aspects, the control signal may indicate one or more memory locations of data contained in the data report. For example, the control signal may indicate the location where the data has been stored in the ambient IoT device 610. For example, the control signal may indicate a start position of the MemBank (for example, WordPtr) and a quantity of words (for example, WordCount) . In some examples, a quantity of locations that can be indicated by the control signal may be fixed.

[0138] In some aspects, the control signal may indicate the one or more resources by indicating a frequency shift associated with the data report and a start time associated with the data report. The frequency shift may be associated with the data report in that the ambient IoT device 610 may be configured to transmit the data report over one or more frequency resources in accordance with the frequency shift. The start time may be  associated with the data report in that the ambient IoT device 610 may be configured to transmit the data report beginning at the start time. In some aspects, the control signal may be associated with a quantity of retransmissions associated with the data report. The quantity of retransmissions may be associated with the data report in that the ambient IoT device 610 may be configured to retransmit the data report the quantity of retransmissions.

[0139] In some examples, the control signal may be associated with the quantity of retransmissions in that a bit field of the control signal may indicate the quantity of retransmissions. In some examples, the control signal may be associated with the quantity of retransmissions in that the quantity of retransmissions may be configured (for example, the ambient IoT device 610 may be configured to retransmit the data report the quantity of retransmissions in response to the control signal) . In some examples, a combination of the bit field and the configured quantity of retransmissions may be implemented. For example, if the network node 110 cannot decode information (for example, the data report) from the ambient IoT device 610 using the configured quantity of retransmissions, then the network node 110 may dynamically schedule the retransmissions using the control signal. For example, if the length of the bit field is one bit, then the bit field may indicate whether the control signal is scheduling the ambient IoT device 610 for a new transmission of the data report or for retransmission of the data report. For example, if the value of the bit is zero, then the ambient IoT device 610 may perform the new transmission, and if the value of the bit is one, then the ambient IoT device 610 may perform N retransmissions, where the value of N may be configured) . If the length of the bit field is more than one bit, then the bit field may indicate the number of retransmissions (for example, required retransmissions) . For example, if the length of the bit field is two bits, then the bit field containing 00 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to perform a new transmission; the bit field containing 01 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to perform N retransmissions, the bit field containing 10 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to perform 2N retransmissions; and the bit field containing 11 may indicate that the ambient IoT device 610 is to perform 4N retransmissions.

[0140] In some aspects, the control signal may indicate the one or more resources by indicating a starting frequency associated with the data report, a frequency range associated with the data report, a start time associated with the data report, and a duration associated with the data report. The starting frequency may be associated with the data  report in that the ambient IoT device 610 may be configured to transmit the data report beginning at the starting frequency (for example, a frequency starting position) . The frequency range may be associated with the data report in that the ambient IoT device 610 may be configured to transmit the data report within the frequency range. The start time may be associated with the data report in that the ambient IoT device 610 may be configured to transmit the data report beginning at the start time. The duration may be associated with the data report in that the ambient IoT device 610 may be configured to transmit the data report within the duration. In some examples, the ambient IoT device 610 may identify the quantity of retransmissions for the data report using the allocated time resources.

[0141] In some aspects, a mapping (e.g., a mapping rule) may associate the control signal with the one or more resources. For example, the network node 110 may configure the mapping rule between the control signal and the one or more resources (for example, the resource allocation for the ambient IoT device 610 to respond to the control signal) .

[0142] In a second operation 920, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit, and the network node 110 may receive, in accordance with the data report information, a data report using the one or more resources. For example, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit the data report in the one or more resources associated with (for example, indicated by or mapped to) the control signal. The data report may contain any suitable type of data. For example, the data report may contain inventory data (for example, in an inventory use case) , sensor data (for example, in a sensor use case) , or positioning data (for example, in a positioning use case) , among other examples. In some examples, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit the data report in accordance with an MCS that was dynamically indicated in the control signal or configured.

[0143] Figure 10 is a diagram illustrating an example 1000 associated with a switching signal to switch between data report transmission schemes. As shown in Figure 10, a network node 110 and an ambient IoT device 610 may communicate with one another.

[0144] In a first operation 1010, the network node 110 may transmit, and the ambient IoT device 610 may receive, a switching signal to transmit a data report in accordance with a mapping associating a read command or a control signal with one or more resources or in accordance with the control signal indicating the one or more resources. Transmission of the data report in accordance with the mapping rule (for example, a first data report transmission scheme) is described at least in connection with Figures 6 and 9. Transmission of the data report in accordance with the control signal indicating the one or  more resources (for example, the second data report transmission scheme) is described at least in connection with Figure 9.

[0145] In some aspects, the switching signal may be to transmit the data report in accordance with the mapping. For example, the network node 110 (and the ambient IoT device 610) may start with the first data report transmission scheme, and the network node 110 may transmit a switching signal to indicate a switch from the first data report transmission scheme to the second data report transmission scheme. For example, the network node 110 may switch from the first data report transmission scheme to the second data report transmission scheme in response to the ambient IoT device 610 consistently decoding the control signal successfully within a minimum (for example, threshold) quantity of repetitions of the control signal, or in response to an energy status (for example, stored energy or energy conversion efficiency) of the ambient IoT device 610 satisfying a threshold. The network node 110 may use a switching trigger signal received from the ambient IoT device 610 or energy harvesting feedback received from the ambient IoT device 610 to identify whether to transmit the switching signal. For example, the switching trigger signal may be a switching request that triggers the network node 110 to transmit the switching signal.

[0146] In some aspects, the switching signal is to transmit the data report in accordance with the control signal indicating the one or more resources. For example, the network node 110 (and the ambient IoT device 610) may start with the second data report transmission scheme, and the network node 110 may transmit a switching signal to indicate a switch from the second data report transmission scheme to the first data report transmission scheme. For example, the network node 110 may switch (for example, trigger the switching) from the first data report transmission scheme to the second data report transmission scheme in response to a quantity of control signals that the ambient IoT device 610 does not respond to satisfying a threshold, or in response to the energy status of the ambient IoT device 610 not satisfying a threshold. In a case where the energy status of the ambient IoT device 610 does not satisfy the threshold, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit a switching trigger signal, and the network node 110 may transmit the switching signal, which may confirm the switching.

[0147] In some aspects, transmission of the data report in accordance with the mapping and transmission of the data report in accordance with the control signal indicating the one or more resources may be associated respective monitoring occasions. For example, the first data report transmission scheme and the second data report transmission scheme  may have respective monitoring occasions. In some examples, the network node 110 may switch the monitoring occasion (for example, to the monitoring occasion for the second data report switching scheme) in response to the ambient IoT device 610 consistently decoding the control signal successfully within the minimum quantity of repetitions of the control signal, or in response to an energy status of the ambient IoT device 610 satisfying a threshold, as described above. In some examples, the network node 110 may switch the monitoring occasion (for example, to the monitoring occasion for the first data report switching scheme) in response to a quantity of control signals that the ambient IoT device 610 does not respond to satisfying a threshold, or in response to the energy status of the ambient IoT device 610 not satisfying a threshold, as described above.

[0148] In some aspects, the network node 110 may transmit, and the ambient IoT device 610 may receive, the switching signal in accordance with one or more data report types associated with the ambient IoT device 610. For example, the network node 110 may identify whether to use the first data report transmission scheme or the second data report transmission scheme in accordance with a use case for the ambient IoT device 610. For example, if the ambient IoT device 610 is implemented for a medical instruments inventory management and positioning use case, then the network node 110 may apply the second data report transmission scheme. For example, the ambient IoT device 610 may report status information (for example, a 16-bit serial number of orthopedic forceps) , a usage status (for example, two bits) , usage records (for example, 128 bits) , years of use (for example, six bits) , a quantity of usage (for example, 18 bits) , or maintained status (for example, two bits) , among other examples.

[0149] In some aspects, the network node 110 may transmit, and the ambient IoT device 610 may receive, the switching signal in accordance with a type of the ambient IoT device 610. For example, the ambient IoT device 610 may be a type A, type B, or type C ambient IoT device. Type A ambient IoT devices may have no energy storage or independent signal generation. Type B ambient IoT devices may have energy storage but no independent signal generation. Type C ambient IoT devices may have energy storage and independent signal generation. The network node 110 may identify whether to use the first data report switching scheme or the second data report switching scheme using the type of the ambient IoT device 610. In some examples, the network node 110 may apply the first data report switching scheme to ambient IoT device 610 if the ambient IoT device 610 is type A or type B and the second data report switching scheme to ambient  IoT device 610 if the ambient IoT device 610 is type C. In some examples, the network node 110 may apply the first data report switching scheme to ambient IoT device 610 if the ambient IoT device 610 is type A or type B and the second data report switching scheme to ambient IoT device 610 if the ambient IoT device 610 is type C.

[0150] In a second operation 1020, the network node 110 may transmit, and the ambient IoT device 610 may receive, the read command or the control signal. The read command or the control signal may be as described elsewhere herein (for example, in connection with one or more of Figures 6-9) . In some examples (for example, in the first data report transmission scheme) , the read command or the control signal may be mapped to one or more resources in accordance with a mapping rule. In some examples (for example, in the second data report transmission scheme) , the control signal may indicate the one or more resources.

[0151] In a third operation 1030, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit, and the network node 110 may receive, responsive to the read command or the control signal, a data report in accordance with the switching signal. In some examples (for example, in the first data report transmission scheme) , the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit the data report using the one or more resources mapped to the read command or the control signal. In some examples (for example, in the second data report transmission scheme) , the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit the data report using the one or more resources indicated in the control signal.

[0152] Figure 11 is a diagram illustrating examples 1100 and 1105 associated with a switching signal to switch between data report transmission schemes involving the control signal.

[0153] Example 1100 may involve a switch from the first data report transmission scheme to the second data report transmission scheme. In a first operation 1110, the network node 110 and the ambient IoT device 610 may repeatedly exchange control signals (transmitted by the network node 110) and correct responses to the control signals (for example, data reports transmitted by the ambient IoT device 610) in accordance with the first data report transmission scheme. For example, the control signals may be mapped to resources for transmission of the data reports in accordance with a mapping rule.

[0154] In a second operation 1115, the ambient IoT device 610 may identify that an energy status of the ambient IoT device 610 satisfies a threshold. In a third operation 1120, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit, and the network node 110 may receive, a  switching request to switch from the first data report transmission scheme to the second data report transmission scheme.

[0155] In a fourth operation 1125, the network node 110 may transmit, and the ambient IoT device 610 may receive, the switching signal (for example, a switching indication) to switch from the first data report transmission scheme to the second data report transmission scheme. In a fifth operation 1130, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit, and the network node 110 may receive, an acknowledgment of the switching signal. In a sixth operation 1135, the network node 110 may transmit, and the ambient IoT device 610 may receive, a control signal in accordance with the second data report transmission scheme. For example, the control signal may indicate one or more resources for transmission of a data report.

[0156] Example 1105 may involve a switch from the second data report transmission scheme to the first data report transmission scheme. In a first operation 1140, the network node 110 and the ambient IoT device 610 may repeatedly exchange control signals (transmitted by the network node 110) and incorrect responses to the control signals in accordance with the second data report transmission scheme. For example, the control signals may indicate resources for transmission of the data reports.

[0157] In a second operation 1145, the ambient IoT device 610 may identify that an energy status of the ambient IoT device 610 does not satisfy a threshold. In a third operation 1150, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit, and the network node 110 may receive, a switching request to switch from the second data report transmission scheme to the first data report transmission scheme.

[0158] In a fourth operation 1155, the network node 110 may transmit, and the ambient IoT device 610 may receive, the switching signal (for example, a switching indication) to switch from the second data report transmission scheme to the first data report transmission scheme. In a fifth operation 1160, the ambient IoT device 610 may transmit, and the network node 110 may receive, an acknowledgment of the switching signal. In a sixth operation 1165, the network node 110 may transmit, and the ambient IoT device 610 may receive, a control signal in accordance with the first data report transmission scheme. For example, the control signal may be mapped to one or more resources for transmission of the data report in accordance with a mapping rule.

[0159] Transmitting or receiving, responsive to the read command and in accordance with the mapping, the data report using the one or more resources may enable the network node 110 to schedule ambient IoT devices (for example, ambient IoT device 610) to  transmit data reports with few or no collisions. Furthermore, because the one or more resources are mapped to the read command, the read command may avoid carrying an indication of the one or more resources, thereby reducing overhead and conserving power at the ambient IoT device 610.

[0160] The read command including a bit field that indicates a data report type of the data report may enable an ambient IoT device (for example, ambient IoT device 610) , that can support more than one type of data report, to report one type of data report at a time.

[0161] The read command including a plurality of bit fields that indicate respective memory locations of data contained in the data report may enable an ambient IoT device (for example, ambient IoT device 610) , that can support more than one type of data report, to report more than one type of data report at a time (for example, using a single read command) .

[0162] Receiving or transmitting the control signal, associated with one or more resources, that indicates data report information may enable the network node 110 to schedule ambient IoT devices (for example, ambient IoT device 610) to transmit data reports with few or no collisions. Moreover, the network node 110 may schedule the ambient IoT devices dynamically (for example, in cases where the control signal indicates the one or more resources) and / or with reduced overhead and power consumption at the ambient IoT device 610 (for example, in cases where the control signal is mapped to the one or more resources with a mapping rule) . For example, in cases involving switching between the first data report transmission scheme and the second data report transmission scheme, the network node 110 may continue to transmit the same type of signal (for example, the control signal) regardless of which data report transmission scheme is switched to at any given time.

[0163] The control signal including a bit field that indicates the data report information, and the length of the bit field being fixed, may reduce complexity at the network node 110 (for example, because the network node 110 may avoid identifying the length of the bit field) .

[0164] The control signal including a bit field that indicates the data report information, and a length of the bit field being associated with one or more data report types associated with the ambient IoT device, may enable the length of the bit field to be reduced, thereby reducing power consumption at the ambient IoT device 610. Furthermore, the probability of a false alarm (for example, the probability that another ambient IoT device, having a different functionality than, but the same device identifier as, the ambient IoT device 610,  responds to the control signal) may be reduced because the length of the bit field may not match the expected bit field length of the functionality of the other ambient IoT device 610.

[0165] The control signal indicating the one or more resources by indicating a frequency shift associated with the data report and a start time associated with the data report, and the control signal being associated with a quantity of retransmissions associated with the data report, may provide numerous advantages. For example, a bit field of the control signal indicating the quantity of retransmissions may enable the network node 110 to dynamically indicate the quantity of retransmissions. The quantity of retransmissions being configured may reduce power consumed at the ambient IoT device 610 because the control signal may avoid carrying an indication of the quantity of retransmissions. Implementing a combination of the bit field and the configured quantity of retransmissions may provide flexibility for the network node 110.

[0166] A mapping associating the control signal with the one or more resources may reduce the power consumed at the ambient IoT device 610 because the control signal may avoid carrying an indication of the one or more resources.

[0167] Receiving or transmitting a switching signal to transmit a data report in accordance with a mapping associating a read command or a control signal with one or more resources (for example, the first data report transmission scheme) or in accordance with the control signal indicating the one or more resources (for example, the second data report transmission scheme) may enable a flexible implementation of a combination of the first data report transmission scheme and the second data report transmission scheme. For example, the switching signal may enable the network node 110 and / or the ambient IoT device 610 to identify whether the first data report transmission scheme or the second data report transmission scheme is to be used, thereby allowing the network node 110 and the ambient IoT device 610 to remain synchronized in data report transmission schemes and, thus, reducing signaling errors.

[0168] The switching signal being to transmit the data report in accordance with the mapping may enable switching to a data report transmission scheme (for example, the first data report transmission scheme) that reduces overhead and conserves power at the ambient IoT device 610.

[0169] The switching signal being to transmit the data report in accordance with the control signal indicating the one or more resources may enable switching to a data report  transmission scheme (for example, the second data report transmission scheme) that enables dynamic scheduling for the ambient IoT device 610.

[0170] Figure 12 is a flowchart illustrating an example process 1200 performed, for example, at an ambient IoT device or an apparatus of an ambient IoT device that supports ambient IoT data report resources in accordance with the present disclosure. Example process 1200 is an example where the apparatus or the ambient IoT device (for example, ambient IoT device 610) performs operations associated with ambient IoT data report resources.

[0171] As shown in Figure 12, in some aspects, process 1200 may include receiving an indication of a mapping associating a read command to one or more resources (block 1210) . For example, the ambient IoT device (such as by using communication manager 140 or reception component 1502, depicted in Figure 15) may receive an indication of a mapping associating a read command with one or more resources, as described above.

[0172] As further shown in Figure 12, in some aspects, process 1200 may include receiving the read command (block 1220) . For example, the ambient IoT device (such as by using communication manager 140 or reception component 1502, depicted in Figure 15) may receive the read command, as described above.

[0173] As further shown in Figure 12, in some aspects, process 1200 may include transmitting, responsive to the read command and in accordance with the mapping, a data report using the one or more resources (block 1230) . For example, the ambient IoT device (such as by using communication manager 140 or transmission component 1504, depicted in Figure 15) may transmit, responsive to the read command and in accordance with the mapping, a data report using the one or more resources, as described above.

[0174] Process 1200 may include additional aspects, such as any single aspect or any combination of aspects described below or in connection with one or more other processes described elsewhere herein.

[0178] In a fourth additional aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first through third aspects, the read command includes a plurality of bit fields that indicate respective memory locations of data contained in the data report.

[0179] In a fifth additional aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first through fourth aspects, the one or more resources include one or more time resources.

[0182] Figure 13 is a flowchart illustrating an example process 1300 performed, for example, at an ambient IoT device or an apparatus of an ambient IoT device that supports ambient IoT data report resources in accordance with the present disclosure. Example process 1300 is an example where the apparatus or the ambient IoT device (for example, ambient IoT device 610) performs operations associated with ambient IoT data report resources.

[0183] As shown in Figure 13, in some aspects, process 1300 may include receiving a control signal, associated with one or more resources, that indicates data report information (block 1310) . For example, the ambient IoT device (such as by using communication manager 140 or reception component 1502, depicted in Figure 15) may receive a control signal, associated with one or more resources, that indicates data report information, as described above.

[0184] As further shown in Figure 13, in some aspects, process 1300 may include transmitting, in accordance with the data report information, a data report using the one or more resources (block 1320) . For example, the ambient IoT device (such as by using communication manager 140 or transmission component 1504, depicted in Figure 15) may transmit, in accordance with the data report information, a data report using the one or more resources, as described above.

[0185] Process 1300 may include additional aspects, such as any single aspect or any combination of aspects described below or in connection with one or more other processes described elsewhere herein.

[0186] In a first additional aspect, the control signal includes a bit field that indicates the data report information, and a length of the bit field is fixed.

[0187] In a second additional aspect, alone or in combination with the first aspect, the control signal includes a bit field that indicates the data report information, and a length of the bit field is associated with one or more data report types associated with the ambient IoT device.

[0188] In a third additional aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first and second aspects, the control signal indicates one or more memory locations of data contained in the data report.

[0189] In a fourth additional aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first through third aspects, the control signal indicates the one or more resources by indicating a frequency shift associated with the data report and a start time associated with the data report.

[0190] In a fifth additional aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first through fourth aspects, the control signal indicates the one or more resources by indicating a starting frequency associated with the data report, a frequency range associated with the data report, a start time associated with the data report, and a duration associated with the data report.

[0191] In a sixth additional aspect, alone or in combination with one or more of the first through fifth aspects, a mapping associates the control signal with the one or more resources.

[0192] In a seventh additional aspect, the control signal is associated with a quantity of retransmissions associated with the data report.

[0193] Although Figure 13 shows example blocks of process 1300, in some aspects, process 1300 may include additional blocks, fewer blocks, different blocks, or differently arranged blocks than those depicted in Figure 13. Additionally or alternatively, two or more of the blocks of process 1300 may be performed in parallel.

[0194] Figure 14 is a flowchart illustrating an example process 1400 performed, for example, at an ambient IoT device or an apparatus of an ambient IoT device that supports ambient IoT data report resources in accordance with the present disclosure. Example process 1400 is an example where the apparatus or the ambient IoT device (for example, ambient IoT device 610) performs operations associated with ambient IoT data report resources.

[0195] As shown in Figure 14, in some aspects, process 1400 may include receiving a switching signal to transmit a data report in accordance with a mapping associating a read command or a control signal with one or more resources or in accordance with the control  signal indicating the one or more resources (block 1410) . For example, the ambient IoT device (such as by using communication manager 140 or reception component 1502, depicted in Figure 15) may receive a switching signal to transmit a data report in accordance with a mapping associating a read command or a control signal with one or more resources or in accordance with the control signal indicating the one or more resources, as described above.

[0196] As further shown in Figure 14, in some aspects, process 1400 may include receiving the read command or the control signal (block 1420) . For example, the ambient IoT device (such as by using communication manager 140 or reception component 1502, depicted in Figure 15) may receive the read command or the control signal, as described above.

[0197] As further shown in Figure 14, in some aspects, process 1400 may include transmitting, responsive to the read command or the control signal, a data report in accordance with the switching signal (block 1430) . For example, the ambient IoT device (such as by using communication manager 140 or transmission component 1504, depicted in Figure 15) may transmit, responsive to the read command or the control signal, a data report in accordance with the switching signal, as described above.

[0198] Process 1400 may include additional aspects, such as any single aspect or any combination of aspects described below or in connection with one or more other processes described elsewhere herein.
