AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current methods for area of interest (AOI) event monitoring in wireless communication systems result in resource-consuming and signaling-heavy transmissions due to the transmission of large AOI definitions per UE level, leading to increased bandwidth and memory usage in radio access networks (RAN).

Method used

Implementing a method where radio access network (RAN) nodes receive AOI identifiers (IDs) instead of full AOI definitions through non-UE associated procedures, reducing unnecessary transmissions and storing these IDs per UE level to derive AOI definitions as needed, thereby optimizing bandwidth and memory usage.

Benefits of technology

This approach reduces signaling load and bandwidth consumption on N2 and Xn interfaces, minimizing unnecessary storage at RAN nodes and improving memory efficiency by avoiding large-sized core network predefined AOI transmissions.

Abstract

Methods and apparatuses for area of interest (AOI) event monitoring are disclosed. According to an embodiment, a radio access network (RAN) node receives, from an access and mobility management function (AMF), or an operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) node, first information about AOI definitions and corresponding AOI identifiers (IDs) of core network predefined AOIs. When communication of second information related to at least one of the AOI definitions of the core network predefined AOIs is needed through a user equipment (UE) associated procedure, the RAN node receives or sends an AOI ID corresponding to the at least one of the AOI definitions, without receiving or sending the at least one of the AOI definitions.

Description

METHODS AND APPARATUSES FOR AOI EVENT MONITORINGTechnical Field

[0001] Embodiments of the disclosure generally relate to communication, and, more particularly, to methods and apparatuses for area of interest (AOI) event monitoring. Background

[0002] This section introduces aspects that may facilitate better understanding of the present disclosure. Accordingly, the statements of this section are to be read in this light and are not to be understood as admissions about what is in the prior art or what is not in the prior art.

[0003] Presence reporting area (PRA) is used for reporting changes of user equipment (UE) presence in a PRA. A PRA is composed of a short list of tracking areas (TAs) and / or next generation radio access network (NG-RAN) nodes and / or cells identifiers in a public land mobile network (PLMN) and these lists are called area of interest (AOI) definition.

[0004] A PRA can be either a “UE-dedicated PRA” , which is defined in the subscriber profile, or a “Core Network (CN) predefined PRA” , which is pre-configured in access and mobility management function (AMF) .

[0005] The PRA identifier (ID) is used to identify a PRA and shall be formatted as an integer within the following ranges according to the current 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) specification: 0 to 8 388 607 for UE-dedicated PRA; 8 388 608 to 16 777 215 for Core Network predefined PRA.Summary

[0006] This summary is provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the detailed description. This summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0007] One of the objects of the disclosure is to provide an improved solution for AOI event monitoring. In particular, one of the problems to be solved by the disclosure is that  currently no matter the PRA is a “UE-dedicated PRA” or a “Core Network predefined PRA” , the AOI definition is transmitted per UE level from AMF to NG-RAN and from Source NG-RAN to Target NG-RAN, which is resource consuming and signaling load heavy. Another problem to be solved by the disclosure is that currently NG-RAN maintains the AOI definition per UE level, which consumes the memory of NG-RAN.

[0008] According to a first aspect of the disclosure, there is provided a method at a radio access network (RAN) node. The method may comprise receiving, from an access and mobility management function (AMF) or an operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) node, first information about area of interest (AOI) definitions and corresponding AOI identifiers (IDs) of core network predefined AOIs. The method may further comprise, when communication of second information related to at least one of the AOI definitions of the core network predefined AOIs is needed through a user equipment (UE) associated procedure, receiving or sending an AOI ID corresponding to the at least one of the AOI definitions, without receiving or sending the at least one of the AOI definitions.

[0009] With the above first aspect, unnecessary transmission for core network predefined AOI which has large size can be avoided, and the bandwidth consumption of N2 and / or Xn interface can be decreased to save signaling size.

[0055] For the purpose of explanation, details are set forth in the following description in order to provide a thorough understanding of the embodiments disclosed. It is apparent, however, to those skilled in the art that the embodiments may be implemented without these specific details or with an equivalent arrangement.

[0056] FIG. 1 illustrates an end-to-end flow for UE presence in area of interest (AOI) . At step 1, the consumer of AOI event sends Create Event Subscription to producer (i.e. AMF) with AOI IDs and AOI definitions. For core network (CN) predefined AOI, AOI definitions are not included because access and mobility management function (AMF) can derive the AOI definitions based on AOI IDs from local configuration. AOI IDs are still needed because each UE could use part or all of the CN predefined AOIs.

[0057] At step 2, when UE is or becomes connected, AMF sends Location Reporting Control, Initial Context Setup Request, or Handover Request to next generation radio access network (NG-RAN) with AOI definitions (no matter it is UE dedicated or CN predefined) and Request Reference IDs.

[0058] At step 3, NG-RAN tracks the UE presence in AOIs and sends a Location Report message to AMF including the UE Presence and Request Reference IDs.

[0059] At step 4, AMF sends Event Notification to consumer to notify the UE presence in AOIs. Note that for Xn handover, source NG-RAN sends AOI definitions to target NG-RAN in Handover Request message.

[0060] Currently no matter the Presence reporting area (PRA) is a “UE-dedicated PRA” or a “Core Network predefined PRA” , the AOI definition is transmitted per UE level from AMF to NG-RAN and from Source NG-RAN to Target NG-RAN, and NG-RAN maintains the AOI definition per UE level.

[0061] For example, FIGs. 2A-2D illustrates different cases where AOI definition is transferred between NG-RAN node and AMF or between different NG-RAN nodes. FIG. 2A illustrates an existing process performed when UE goes to connected state from idle state. At step 1, the NG-RAN node sends an Initial UE message to the AMF. At step 2, the AMF sends to the NG-RAN node an Initial Context Setup Request message containing AOI definitions. At step 3, the NR-RAN node replies with an Initial Context Setup Response message to the AMF. At step 4, the NG-RAN node sends a Location Report message to the AMF.

[0062] FIG. 2B illustrates another existing process performed when UE goes to connected state from idle state. At step 1, the NG-RAN node sends an Initial UE message to the AMF. At step 2, the AMF sends to the NG-RAN node a Location Reporting Control message containing AOI definitions. At step 3, the NG-RAN node sends a Location Report message to the AMF.

[0063] FIG. 2C illustrates an existing process performed when UE is in connected state and then Xn handover happens. At step 1, the source NG-RAN node sends to the target NG-RAN node a Handover Request message containing AOI definitions. At step 2, the target NG-RAN node sends a Path Switch Request message to the AMF. At step 3, the AMF replies with a Path Switch Request Acknowledge message to the target NG-RAN node. At step 4, the target NG-RAN node sends a Location Report message to the AMF.

[0064] FIG. 2D illustrates an existing process performed when UE is in connected state and then N2 handover happens. At step 1, the source NG-RAN node sends a Handover Required message to the AMF. At step 2, the AMF sends to the target NG-RAN node a Handover Request message containing AOI definitions. At step 3, the target NG-RAN replies with a Handover Request Acknowledge message to the AMF. At step 4, the AMF sends a Handover Command message to the source NG-RAN node. At step 5, the target NG-RAN node sends a Location Report message to the AMF.

[0065] FIG. 3 illustrates an exemplary example of the existing solution for core network predefined AOI transmission and storage. As shown in FIG. 3, AOI definitions are transmitted per UE level from the AMF to the NG-RAN. The NG-RAN maintains the AOI definitions per UE level. Note that Initial Context Setup Request and Handover Request also apply the same as Location Reporting Control, and they are not shown in FIG. 3 for the sake of the conciseness.

[0066] The transmission of AOI definition is very resource consuming and signaling load heavy because of following reasons. Each time UE goes to connected from idle state, e.g. in Service Request procedure, AMF needs to transmit the AOI definitions to NG-RAN in Initial Context Setup Request or Location Report Control message, as shown in FIGs. 2A and 2B. Each time Xn handover happens, Source NG-RAN needs to transmit the AOI definitions to Target NG-RAN in Handover Request message, as shown in FIG. 2C. Each time N2 handover happens, AMF needs to transmit the AOI definitions to Target NG-RAN in Handover Request message, as shown in FIG. 2D. Table 1 below shows some max values about AOI for one UE on N2 and Xn interface.

[0067] Table 1: max values about AOI for one UE on N2 and Xn interface

[0068] Thus, the size of one AOI definition with max number of tracking area identity (TAI) , Cell and RAN node is about 3 KB and one UE could use 64 AOIs at max. Theoretically, about 192 KB for AOI definitions is transmitted each time one UE goes to connected state or handover happens on N2 / Xn interface. Even worse, AOI definitions are stored in UE’s context in NG-RAN and it consumes the memory of NG-RAN.

[0069] The present disclosure proposes an improved solution for AOI event monitoring. The inventors of the present disclosure find that for the “Core Network predefined PRA” , AOI definition could be derived from AOI ID if NG-RAN could know the configuration  of the “Core Network predefined PRA” . In that case, there would be no need to send AOI definitions for the individual UEs. Thus, one of the basic ideas of the present disclosure is to introduce AOI ID to N2 interface and Xn interface to identify AOI definition. Another basic idea is that over N2 interface, per NG-RAN node AMF transmits CN Defined AOI IDs and AOI definitions, and per UE level AMF only transmits the CN Defined AOI IDs. Alternatively, CN Defined AOI IDs and AOI definitions may be configured to NG-RAN nodes. Yet another basic idea is that for Xn interface, NG-RAN does not need to transmit CN Defined AOI definitions, and CN Defined AOI IDs are transmitted from the source NG-RAN node to the target NG-RAN node per UE level. Yet another basic idea is that NG-RAN maintains the CN Defined AOI definitions per node level, and maintains AOI ID per UE level, e.g. stores it in the UE context.

[0070] The solution is applicable to a communication system including an RAN node and an AMF. For example, the RAN node may be an NG-RAN node. The AMF is a control plane function in the 5th generation (5G) core network that handles connection and management mobility tasks. Note that the specific term (s) used herein do not limit the present disclosure only to the communication system related to the specific term (s) , which however can be more generally applied to other communication systems. Note that a network function / node (i.e., RAN, AMF, …) can be implemented either as a network element on a dedicated hardware, as a software instance running on a dedicated hardware, or as a virtualised function instantiated on an appropriate platform, e.g. on a cloud infrastructure.

[0071] Within the context of this disclosure, the term UE or terminal device may also be referred to as, for example, device, access terminal, mobile station, mobile unit, subscriber station, or the like. It may refer to any end device that can access a wireless communication network and receive services therefrom. By way of example and not limitation, the UE or terminal device may include a portable computer, an image capture terminal device such as a digital camera, a gaming terminal device, a music storage and playback appliance, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, a tablet, a wearable device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , or the like.

[0072] In an Internet of things (IoT) scenario, a UE or terminal device may represent a machine or other device that performs monitoring and / or measurements, and transmits  the results of such monitoring and / or measurements to another UE or terminal device and / or a network equipment. In this case, the UE or terminal device may be a machine-to-machine (M2M) device, which may, in a 3GPP context, be referred to as a machine-type communication (MTC) device. Particular examples of such machines or devices may include sensors, metering devices such as power meters, industrial machineries, bikes, vehicles, or home or personal appliances, e.g. refrigerators, televisions, personal wearables such as watches, and so on.

[0073] As used herein, the term “communication system” refers to a system following any suitable communication standards, such as the first generation (1G) , 2G, 2.5G, 2.75G, 3G, 4G, 4.5G, 5G communication protocols, and / or any other protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network entity (or a network function) in the communication system may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols, including, but not limited to, 1G, 2G, 2.5G, 2.75G, 3G, 4G, 4.5G, 5G communication protocols, and / or any other protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0074] Hereinafter, the solution will be described in detail with reference to FIGs. 4-16.

[0075] FIG. 4 is a flowchart illustrating a method performed by an RAN node according to an embodiment of the disclosure. At block 402, the RAN node receives, from an AMF or an operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) node, first information about AOI definitions and corresponding AOI IDs of core network predefined AOIs. The first information may be received from the AMF through a non-UE associated procedure, or may be received from the OAM node as configuration information of the RAN node. As a first option, the non-UE associated procedure may be a next generation (NG) setup procedure. For this option, the first information may be received in an NG setup response message. FIG. 6A illustrates an exemplary example for the first option. As shown in FIG. 6A, at step 1, the NG-RAN node sends an N2 Setup Request message to the AMF. At step 2, the AMF sends to the NG-RAN node an N2 Setup Response message containing core network predefined AOI.

[0076] As a second option, the non-UE associated procedure may be an AMF configuration update procedure. For this option, the first information may be received  from the AMF in an AMF configuration update message. FIG. 6B illustrates an exemplary example for the second option. As shown in FIG. 6B, at step 1, the AMF sends to the NG-RAN node an AMF Configuration Update message containing core network predefined AOI. At step 2, the NG-RAN node replies with an AMF Configuration Update Acknowledge message to the AMF.

[0077] At block 404, when communication of second information related to at least one of the AOI definitions of the core network predefined AOIs is needed through a UE associated procedure, the RAN node receives or sends an AOI ID corresponding to the at least one of the AOI definitions, without receiving or sending the at least one of the AOI definitions. For example, the receiving of the AOI ID at block 404 may be implemented as one or more of blocks 708-714 of FIG. 7. At block 708, the RAN node receives the AOI ID from the AMF through an initial context setup procedure. In this case, the UE associated procedure is initial context setup procedure, and the AOI ID may be received in an initial context setup request message. FIG. 8A illustrates an exemplary example for this case. In this case, when UE becomes connected from idle state, AMF sends AOI IDs instead of AOI definitions to NG-RAN nodes in Initial Context Setup Request message. Specifically, at step 1, the NG-RAN node sends an Initial UE message to the AMF. At step 2, the AMF sends to the NG-RAN node an Initial Context Setup Request message containing AOI IDs corresponding to the required AOI definitions. At step 3, the NR-RAN node replies with an Initial Context Setup Response message to the AMF. At step 4, the NG-RAN node sends a Location Report message to the AMF.

[0078] At block 710, the RAN node receives the AOI ID from the AMF through a location reporting procedure. In this case, the UE associated procedure is location reporting procedure, and the AOI ID may be received in a location reporting control message. FIG. 8B illustrates an exemplary example for this case. In this case, when UE becomes connected from idle state, AMF sends AOI IDs instead of AOI definitions to NG-RAN nodes in Location Reporting Control message. Specifically, at step 1, the NG-RAN node sends an Initial UE message to the AMF. At step 2, the AMF sends to the NG-RAN node a Location Reporting Control message containing AOI IDs corresponding to the required AOI definitions. At step 3, the NG-RAN node sends a Location Report message to the AMF.

[0079] At block 712, the RAN node receives the AOI ID from the AMF through a first handover procedure. In this case, the UE associated procedure is the first handover procedure, and the AOI ID may be received in an N2 handover request message. FIG. 8C illustrates an exemplary example for this case. In this case, when Xn handover happens, source NG-RAN node sends AOI IDs instead of AOI definitions to target NG-RAN node in Handover Request message. Specifically, at step 1, the source NG-RAN node sends to the target NG-RAN node a Handover Request message containing AOI IDs corresponding to the required AOI definitions. At step 2, the target NG-RAN node sends a Path Switch Request message to the AMF. At step 3, the AMF replies with a Path Switch Request Acknowledge message to the target NG-RAN node. At step 4, the target NG-RAN node sends a Location Report message to the AMF.

[0080] At block 714, the RAN node receives the AOI ID from another RAN node acting as a source RAN node through a second handover procedure. In this case, the UE associated procedure is the second handover procedure, and the AOI ID may be received in an Xn handover request message. FIG. 8D illustrates an exemplary example for this case. In this case, when N2 handover happens, AMF sends AOI IDs instead of AOI definitions to NG-RAN nodes in Handover Request message. Specifically, at step 1, the source NG-RAN node sends a Handover Required message to the AMF. At step 2, the AMF sends to the target NG-RAN node a Handover Request message containing AOI IDs corresponding to the required AOI definitions. At step 3, the target NG-RAN replies with a Handover Request Acknowledge message to the AMF. At step 4, the AMF sends a Handover Command message to the source NG-RAN node. At step 5, the target NG-RAN node sends a Location Report message to the AMF. The RAN node mentioned at block 714 corresponds to the target RAN node in FIG. 8C.

[0081] Optionally, the initial context setup request message, or the location reporting control message, or the N2 handover request message, or the Xn handover request message may further comprise a location reporting reference ID corresponding to the at least one of the AOI definitions. The location reporting reference ID is a legacy ID which is a UE-level ID, while the AOI ID is a core network-level ID. By additionally including this legacy location reporting reference ID, the process of the present disclosure can be compatible with the legacy process.

[0082] For example, the sending of the AOI ID at block 404 may be implemented as sending the AOI ID corresponding to the at least one of the AOI definitions to another RAN node acting as a target RAN node through a third handover procedure. In this case, the UE associated procedure is the third handover procedure, and the AOI ID may be sent to the another RAN node in an Xn handover request message. FIG. 8C illustrates an exemplary example for this case. The RAN node mentioned at block 404 corresponds to the source RAN node in FIG. 8C.

[0083] With the method of FIG. 4, unnecessary transmission for core network predefined AOI which has large size can be avoided, and the bandwidth consumption of N2 and / or Xn interface can be decreased to save signaling size.

[0084] FIG. 5 is a flowchart illustrating a method performed by an RAN node according to an embodiment of the disclosure. As shown, the method comprises blocks 402-404 of FIG. 4 and block 506. At block 506, the RAN node maintains the received first information per RAN node level. With the method of FIG. 5, in addition to the effect brought by the method of FIG. 4, unnecessary storage at the RAN node side for core network predefined AOI which has large size can be avoided, and the memory usage of the RAN node can be improved.

[0085] FIG. 9 is a flowchart illustrating a method performed by an RAN node according to an embodiment of the disclosure. As shown, the method comprises blocks 402-404 of FIG. 4 and blocks 916-918. At block 916, the RAN node stores the AOI ID in a UE context for a terminal device involved in the UE associated procedure. At block 918, the RAN node determines the at least one of the AOI definitions that corresponds to the AOI ID, based on the received first information. With the method of FIG. 9, the RAN node can obtain the required AOI definition per UE level by using the corresponding AOI ID.

[0086] FIG. 10 is a flowchart illustrating a method performed by an AMF according to an embodiment of the disclosure. At block 1002, the AMF sends, to an RAN node, first information about AOI definitions and corresponding AOI IDs of core network predefined AOIs, through a non-UE associated procedure. As a first option, the non-UE associated procedure may be an NG setup procedure, and the first information may be sent in an NG setup response message, as described above. As a second option, the non- UE associated procedure may be an AMF configuration update procedure, and the first information may be sent in an AMF configuration update message, as described above.

[0087] At block 1004, when sending of second information related to at least one of the AOI definitions of the core network predefined AOIs is needed through a UE associated procedure, the AMF sends an AOI ID corresponding to the at least one of the AOI definitions to the RAN node, without sending the at least one of the AOI definitions. For example, block 1004 may be implemented as blocks 1108-1112 of FIG. 11. At block 1108, the AMF sends the AOI ID to the RAN node through an initial context setup procedure. In this case, the AOI ID may be sent in an initial context setup request message. At block 1110, the AMF sends the AOI ID to the RAN node through a location reporting procedure. In this case, the AOI ID may be sent in a location reporting control message. At block 1112, the AMF sends the AOI ID to the RAN node through a handover procedure. In this case, the AOI ID may be sent in an N2 handover request message.

[0088] Optionally, the initial context setup request message, or the location reporting control message, or the N2 handover request message may further comprise a location reporting reference ID corresponding to the at least one of the AOI definitions. The location reporting reference ID is a legacy ID which is a UE-level ID, while the AOI ID is a core network-level ID. By additionally including this legacy location reporting reference ID, the process of the present disclosure can be compatible with the legacy process.

[0089] With the method of FIG. 10, unnecessary transmission for core network predefined AOI which has large size can be avoided, and the bandwidth consumption of N2 interface can be decreased to save signaling size.

[0090] Based on the above description, during NG Setup procedure, if predefined Area of Interests are configured in AMF, in NG Setup Response message, AMF shall include the CN predefined Area of Interest IE which includes the mapping between AOI IDs and AOI definitions. If the CN predefined Area of Interest IE is included in NG Setup Response, the NG-RAN shall store the mapping between AOI IDs and AOI definitions which will be used to derive the AOI definitions from AOI ID when NG-RAN receives AOI IDs from AMF in UE associated procedure.

[0091] If the configuration of predefined Area of Interests is changed in AMF, AMF shall send AMF Configuration Update message and include the CN predefined Area of Interest IE which indicates the new mapping between AOI IDs and AOI definitions. If the CN predefined Area of Interest IE is included in AMF Configuration Update message, the NG-RAN shall store the new mapping between AOI IDs and AOI definitions which will be used to derive the AOI definitions from AOI ID when NG-RAN receives AOI IDs from AMF in UE associated procedure.

[0092] FIG. 12 is a flowchart illustrating an exemplary process according to an embodiment of the disclosure. As shown, at the AMF, there are location reporting configuration for CN predefined AOIs and location reporting configuration for UE specific AOIs. At step 1, through an NG application protocol (NGAP) procedure, the AMF sends the location reporting CN predefined part (AOIs and AOI IDs) to the NG-RAN node. At step 2, the NG-RAN node stores the location reporting CN predefined information. At step 3, location report control needs to be performed for a specific UE. At step 4, the AMF sends to the NG-RAN node a location reporting control message containing the UE specific AOIs and AOI IDs corresponding to CN predefined AOIs for this UE. At step 5, the NG-RAN node finds the AOIs with the AOI IDs for the CN predefined AOIs, based on the stored information at step 2. At step 6, the NG-RAN node sends a location reporting message to the AMF.

[0093] FIG. 13 illustrates an exemplary example of core network predefined AOI transmission and storage according to an embodiment of the disclosure. As shown in FIG. 13, per NG-RAN node the AMF transmits CN Defined AOI IDs and AOI definitions to the NG-RAN node, and per UE level the AMF only transmits the CN Defined AOI IDs to the NG-RAN node. The NG-RAN node maintains the CN Defined AOI definitions per node level, and maintains AOI ID per UE level, by storing it in the UE context. Note that Initial Context Setup Request and Handover Request also apply the same as Location Reporting Control, and they are not shown in FIG. 13 for the sake of the conciseness.

[0094] Based on the above description, in an embodiment of the present disclosure, at CN side, when NG-RAN initially connects to AMF or the configuration of CN Defined AOI on AMF changes, AMF uses non-UE associated procedure (e.g. NG Setup, AMF  Configuration Update) to send the AOI IDs and AOI definitions to NG-RAN. Alternatively, CN Defined AOI IDs and AOI definitions can be configured to NG-RAN nodes. When UE goes to connected state, AMF sends the AOI IDs used by UE instead of AOI definitions with UE associated procedure, e.g. Initial Context Setup procedure and Location Reporting procedure. When N2 handover happens, AMF sends the AOI IDs used by UE instead of AOI definitions in Handover Request message. Note that for inter-AMF N2 handover case, source AMF transmits AOI IDs to target AMF (which is the legacy behavior) , and target AMF transmits AOI IDs to target NG-RAN node.

[0095] In another embodiment of the present disclosure, at RAN side, when NG-RAN receives the CN Defined AOI definitions and AOI IDs with the non-UE associated procedure, NG-RAN stores the mapping of AOI definitions and AOI IDs per node level. When NG-RAN receives the CN Defined AOI IDs with the UE associated procedure, NG-RAN stores the CN Defined AOI IDs in UE context, derives the AOI definitions with AOI IDs based on the mapping between AOI definition and AOI ID. When Xn handover happens, Source NG-RAN only transmits the AOI IDs for CN Defined AOI, i.e., not transmit the CN Defined AOI definitions. Target NG-RAN derives the AOI definitions with AOI IDs based on the mapping between AOI and AOI ID.

[0096] Based on the above description, the following changes are suggested to be made to 3GPP TS 38.413 V18.0.0, section 9.3.1.65, where the changes are highlighted with underlines.
