Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR USING EXPLICIT INDICATION OF DYNAMIC SUBBAND OPERATION IN INITIAL CONTROL FRAME AND / OR TRIGGERING DISTRIBUTED RESOURCE UNIT FORMAT IN INITIAL CONTROL RESPONSE FRAMEBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION1. FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present invention relates to wireless communications, and more particularly, to a method and apparatus for using explicit indication of a dynamic subband operation (DSO) in an initial control frame (ICF) and / or triggering a distributed resource unit (dRU) format in an initial control response frame (ICR) .

[0002] 2. DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART

[0003] Currently, in a Wi-Fi network, an access point (AP) may support a channel bandwidth (CBW) up to 320 MHz that is larger than a CBW (e.g., 20, 40, 80, or 160 MHz) of a non-AP station (STA) that has cost consideration. For a typical Wi-Fi network operation, all transmissions must include the primary 20MHz channel, regardless of the total bandwidth used. The absence of large bandwidth non-AP STAs could result in significant portions of AP’s bandwidth being underused, causing a decrease in spectral efficiency. To address this issue, a DSO mechanism is proposed for allowing an AP to trigger a non-AP STA to switch to a subband by sending an ICF to the non-AP STA. In response to the ICF, the non-AP STA will switch its central frequency, preamble decoder and payload decoder to a target subband, and then send an ICR back to the AP. In response to the ICR, the AP starts a following data transmission sequence between the AP and the non-AP STA. For example, the ICF may be a multi-user request to send (MU-RTS) trigger frame or a buffer status report poll (BSRP) trigger frame. DSO can be used not only to trigger a non-AP STA to switch to a subband but also to trigger the non-AP STA to switch its preamble decoder position. According to developments of the Wi-Fi standard, one downlink (DL) multi-user physical layer protocol data unit (MU PPDU) can utilize different preamble Signal (SIG) contents for various 80 MHz segments, or all 80 MHz segments can share the same SIG content. However, in practical use, if the AP assigns different SIG contents for different 80 MHz segments, some non-AP STAs may not decode the SIG contents correctly. Specifically, the current DSO ICF uses an implicit rule to represent a DSO switch indicator, which occurs when the RU allocation is outside the non-AP STA’s CBW. If a non-AP STA has a large CBW and the RU allocation assigned by the AP is within the non-AP STA’s CBW, then the non-AP STA would not be able to switch positions of its preamble decoder and payload decoder. As a result, when the AP sends a preamble SIG content on a subband (i.e., a non-primary channel) for the non-AP STA that has a large CBW in which the assigned RU allocation is included, the non-AP STA fails to decode the preamble SIG content on the subband, and also fails to receive the DL data on the subband.

[0004] Thus, there is need for an innovative DSO design which can address issues resulting from the DSO switch that is implicitly indicated by the RU allocation.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0005] One of the objectives of the claimed invention is to provide a method and apparatus for using explicit indication of a DSO in an ICF and / or triggering a dRU format in an ICR.

[0021] Certain terms are used throughout the following description and claims, which refer to particular components. As one skilled in the art will appreciate, electronic equipment manufacturers may refer to a component by different names. This document does not intend to distinguish between components that differ in name but not in function. In the following description and in the claims, the terms "include" and "comprise" are used in an open-ended fashion, and thus should be interpreted to mean "include, but not limited to ... " . Also, the term "couple" is intended to mean either an indirect or direct electrical connection. Accordingly, if one device is coupled to another device, that connection may be through a direct electrical connection, or through an indirect electrical connection via other devices and connections.

[0022] FIG. 1 is a diagram illustrating a wireless communication system that supports the proposed DSO design according to an embodiment of the present invention. The wireless communication system 100 may be a Wi-Fi system compliant with IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) standard or a next-generation Wi-Fi standard (i.e., Wi-Fi X standard, where X > 8) . The wireless communication system 100 includes a plurality of wireless communication devices, such as one AP 102 and multiple non-AP STAs 104_1-104_N (N≥2) .

[0023] By way of example, but not limitation, AP 102 and non-AP STAs 104_1-104_N may have the same or similar circuit structure. As shown in FIG. 1, AP 102 / non-AP STA 104_1 / non-AP STA 104_N includes a processor 112 / 122_1 / 122_N, a memory 114 / 124_1 / 124_N, a control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N, and a network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N, where the network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N includes a transmitter (TX) circuit 118 / 128_1 / 128_N and a receiver (RX) circuit 120 / 130_1 / 130_N. The memory 114 / 124_1 / 124_N is arranged to store a program code. The processor 112 / 122_1 / 122_N is arranged to load and execute the program code to manage AP 102 / non-AP STA 104_1 / non-AP STA 104_N. The control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N is arranged to control communications with other Wi-Fi devices. For example, the control circuit 116 / 126_1 / 126_N controls the TX circuit 118 / 128_1 / 128_N of the network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N to send packets to non-AP STA / AP, and controls the RX circuit 120 / 122_1 / 122_N of the network interface circuit 117 / 127_1 / 127_N to receive packets from non-AP STA / AP.

[0024] It should be noted that only the components pertinent to the present invention are illustrated in FIG. 1. In practice, each of AP 102 and non-AP STAs 104_1-104_N may include additional components to achieve designated functions.

[0025] The AP 102 and non-AP STAs 104_1-104_N support the proposed DSO design that uses explicit indication of DSO in an ICF and / or triggers a dRU format in an ICR. Specifically, the proposed DSO design may include AP-side operations and STA-side operations. For example, the AP-side operations may be used to generate and send an ICF to non-AP STAs, and the STA-side operations may be used to receive and parse an ICF sent from an AP, and respond with an ICR.

[0026] As shown in FIG. 1, the control circuit 116 of the AP 102 is arranged to generate an ICF, and instruct the network interface circuit 117 (particularly, TX circuit 118 of network interface circuit 117) to send the ICF to at least one of non-AP STAs 104_1-104_N, where the ICF is arranged to carry explicit indication of DSO INDDSO that may include one or more explicit bits. Regarding the non-AP STA 104_1 / 104_N, the network interface circuit 127_1 / 127_N (particularly, RX circuit 130_1 / 130_N of network interface circuit 127_1 / 127_N) is arranged to receive the ICF sent from the AP 102, and the control circuit 126_1 / 126_N is arranged to parse the explicit indication of DSO INDDSO (which may include one or more explicit bits) from the ICF received by the network interface circuit 127_1 / 127_N (particularly, RX circuit 130_1 / 130_N of network interface circuit 127_1 / 127_N) .

[0027] In response to the ICF sent from the AP 102, the control circuit 126_1 / 126_N is further arranged to generate an ICR_1 / ICR_N, and instruct the network interface circuit 127_1 / 127_N (particularly, TX circuit 128_1 / 128_N of network interface circuit 127_1 / 127_N) to send the ICR_1 / ICR_N to the AP 102. In some embodiments of the present invention, ICR_1 / ICR_N may be transmitted using a dRU format. Regarding the AP 102, the network interface circuit 117 (particularly, RX circuit 120 of network interface circuit 117) is arranged to receive the ICR_1 / ICR_N sent from the non-AP STA 104_1 / 104_N, and the control circuit 116 is further arranged to parse the ICR_1 / ICR_N and start the following data transmission sequence between AP 102 and non-AP STAs 104_1-104_N.

[0028] In accordance with a first ICF design proposed by the present invention, the explicit indication of DSO INDDSO may include an explicit bit that is set to explicitly indicate whether the ICF is a DSO ICF. In accordance with a second ICF design proposed by the present invention, the explicit indication of DSO INDDSO may include an explicit bit that is set to explicitly indicate whether a corresponding non-AP STA needs to switch to a subband (i.e., a non-primary channel) . In accordance with a third ICF design proposed by the present invention, the explicit indication of DSO INDDSO may include one explicit bit that is set to explicitly indicate whether the ICF is a DSO ICF and another explicit bit that is set to explicitly indicate whether a corresponding non-AP STA needs to switch to a subband (i.e., a non-primary channel) .

[0029] For better comprehension of technical features of the present invention, the following assumes that the ICF is a trigger frame compliant with IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) standard. However, this is for illustrative purposes only, and is not meant to be a limitation of the present invention. In practice, any Wi-Fi device using one or all features of the proposed DSO design falls within the scope of the present invention.

[0030] Please refer to FIG. 2 in conjunction with FIG. 3. FIG. 2 is a diagram illustrating a format of an Ultra High Reliability (UHR) variant common info field included in a trigger frame according to an embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 3 is a diagram illustrating a format of a UHR special user info field included in a trigger frame according to an embodiment of the present invention. One bit B63 of the UHR variant common info field is set to indicate whether a UHR special user info field exists in the trigger frame. If a special user info field flag subfield defined at B63 of the UHR special user info field is set by 1, it indicates that a UHR special user info field is present in the trigger frame. If the special user info field flag subfield defined at B63 of the UHR special user info field is set by 0, it indicates that no UHR special user info field is present in the trigger frame.

[0031] When a UHR special user info field is present in the trigger frame, the UHR special user info field is used to carry the common information of 11bn-related features. The present invention proposes adding a “DSO ICF” bit 302 in the UHR special user info field to indicate whether the trigger frame is a DSO ICF. Specifically, the explicit indication of DSO INDDSO of the ICF includes an explicit bit (e.g., “DSO ICF” bit 302 at B13 of the UHR special user info field) that is set to explicitly indicate whether the ICF is a DSO ICF. If the “DSO ICF” bit 302 is set by 1, it indicates that the ICF is a DSO ICF. If the “DSO ICF” bit 302 is set by 0, it indicates that the ICF is not a DSO ICF.

[0032] The trigger frame includes a common info field immediately followed by a user info list field, where the user info list field may include a special user info field and following user info field (s) if the special user info field exists, or may only include user info field (s) if the special user info field does not exist. The UHR variant user info field is used to carry the per-user information of 11bn-related features. The present invention proposes adding a “DSO switch” bit in the UHR variant user info field to indicate whether a corresponding user (i.e. non-AP STA) needs to switch to a subband. Specifically, the explicit indication of DSO INDDSO of the ICF includes an explicit bit (e.g., “DSO switch” bit of the UHR variant user info field) that is set to explicitly indicate whether a corresponding user (i.e. non-AP STA) needs to switch to a subband.

[0033] The present invention proposes several options of the position of the “DSO switch” bit defined in the UHR variant user info field. For example, the “DSO switch” bit can be defined at one of B25 and B27-B30 of the UHR variant user info field.

[0034] FIG. 4 is a diagram illustrating a format of a UHR variant user info field according to an embodiment of the present invention. The DSO ICR may not need the UHR modulation and coding scheme (MCS) rate. In accordance with a first “DSO switch” bit design, the “DSO switch” bit may be defined at B25 of the UHR variant user info field.

[0035] FIG. 5 is a diagram illustrating a format of a spatial stream (SS) Allocation subfield included in the UHR variant user info field according to an embodiment of the present invention. The format of the SS Allocation subfield depends on dRU or regular RU (rRU) . In a case where a DSO initial control sequence does not use a dRU mechanism, the SS Allocation subfield format shown in FIG. 5 is used. In accordance with a second “DSO switch” bit design, the “DSO switch” bit may be defined at B27 or B28 of the UHR variant user info field. Specifically, since the DSO initial control sequence cannot use the dRU mechanism, the bit at B27 or B28 of the UHR variant user info field can be reused to act as the “DSO switch” bit.

[0036] FIG. 6 is a diagram illustrating another format of an SS Allocation subfield included in the UHR variant user info field according to an embodiment of the present invention. In a case where a DSO initial control sequence uses a dRU mechanism, the SS Allocation subfield format shown in FIG. 6 is used. In accordance with a third “DSO switch” bit design, the “DSO switch” bit may be defined at B29 or B30 of the UHR variant user info field. Specifically, when the DSO initial control sequence can use the dRU mechanism, one of two bits reserved for dRU can be used as the “DSO switch” bit.

[0037] The STA-side DSO operation may be controlled by one or both of the explicit bits (e.g., “DSO ICF” bit and “DSO switch” bit) carried by the ICF sent from the AP 102. For example, when the “DSO ICF” bit of the UHR special user info field is 0, the “DSO switch” bit in the UHR variant user info field is meaningless. For another example, when the “DSO ICF” bit of the UHR special user info field is 1 and the “DSO switch” bit in the UHR variant user info field is 0, the corresponding non-AP STA does not need to do the DSO switch. For yet another example, when the “DSO ICF” bit of the UHR special user info field is 1 and the “DSO switch” bit in the UHR variant user info field is 1, the corresponding non-AP STA needs to check an RU allocation subfield and a primary / secondary 160 (PS160) subfield of the UHR variant user info field to get the target subband position, and do the DSO switch and decode the preamble SIG content on the target subband.

[0038] FIG. 7 is a diagram illustrating a first DSO scenario according to an embodiment of the present invention. Suppose that the wireless communication system 100 shown in FIG. 1 has one AP 102 (denoted by “AP” in FIG. 7) and two non-AP STAs 104_1 and 104_N (denoted by “STA1” and “STA2” in FIG. 7) , where AP’s CBW is 320 MHz, and non-AP STA’s CBW is 160 MHz. AP uses a DSO ICF to indicate that STA1 should stay at the primary 160MHz channel (P160) and STA2 should switch from P160 to the secondary 160MHz channel (S160) , where the DSO ICF carries explicit bits UHR_Special_User_Info. DSO_ICF=1, UHR_Variant_User_Info. DSO_Switch (STA1) =0, and UHR_Variant_User_Info. DSO_Switch (STA2) =1, with RU allocation=S160. STA1 checks the trigger frame indication to get UHR_Special_User_Info. DSO_ICF=1 and UHR_Variant_User_Info. DSO_Switch (STA1) =0, and knows that it does not need to do the DSO switch. STA2 checks the trigger frame indication to get UHR_Special_User_Info. DSO_ICF=1 and UHR_Variant_User_Info. DSO_Switch (STA2) =1, with RU allocation=S160, and knows that it needs to switch to the S160 subband. Hence, STA1 decodes the preamble SIG content on P160, receives DL data on P160, and responds with a block acknowledgement frame (BA) on P160; and STA2 decodes the preamble SIG content on S160, receives DL data on S160, and responds with a BA frame on S160.

[0039] FIG. 8 is a diagram illustrating a second DSO scenario according to an embodiment of the present invention. Suppose that the wireless communication system 100 shown in FIG. 1 has one AP 102 (denoted by “AP” in FIG. 8) and two non-AP STAs 104_1 and 104_N (denoted by “STA1” and “STA2” in FIG. 8) , where AP’s CBW is 320 MHz, and non-AP STA’s CBW is also 320 MHz. AP uses a DSO ICF to indicate that STA1 should stay at P160 for preamble decoding and STA2 should switch from P160 to S160 for preamble decoding, where the DSO ICF carries explicit bits UHR_Special_User_Info. DSO_Switch (STA2) =1, with RU allocation=S160, and knows that it needs to switch to the S160 subband and decode preamble SIG content on the subband correctly. Hence, STA1 decodes the preamble SIG content on P160, receives DL data on P160, and responds with a BA frame on P160; and STA2 decodes the preamble SIG content on S160, receives DL data on S160, and responds with a BA frame on S160. Though the RU allocation=S160 is within the CBW of STA2, STA2 switches the central frequency, preamble decoder and payload decoder to the target S160 subband under control of the explicit indication of DSO carried by the DSO ICF, and decodes the preamble SIG content and receives the DL data on the target S160 subband correctly.

[0040] In some embodiments of the present invention, the proposed DSO design may trigger a dRU format in an ICR transmitted by a non-AP STA. Specifically, the control circuit 116 of the AP 102 generates an ICF and send the ICF to at least one of the non-AP STAs 104_1-104_N, wherein the ICF is arranged to trigger at least one of the non-AP STAs 104_1-104_N to respond with an ICR using a dRU format. FIG. 9 is a diagram illustrating distribution of RU tones of dRUs in the frequency domain. The RU tones allocated to the same user are not contiguous in the frequency domain, but are evenly distributed in the frequency domain. As shown in FIG. 9, RU tones allocated to different users are interleaved. In response to the ICF indicating that an ICR is required to be transmitted in a dRU format, the non-AP STA 104_1 / 104_N must check all target RU tones before responding. If all target RU tones are idle, the non-AP STA 104_1 / 104_N is allowed to transmit an ICR through the target RU tones. If not all target RU tones are idle due to interference resulting from an overlapping basic service set (OBSS) , the non-AP STA 104_1 / 104_N is unable to transmit an ICR through the target RU tones. Hence, the AP 102 can adjust the transmission policy based on how non-AP STAs respond after sending an ICF that triggers a dRU format in an ICR.

[0041] FIG. 10 is a diagram illustrating a first data transmission scenario according to an embodiment of the present invention. Suppose that the wireless communication system 100 shown in FIG. 1 has one AP 102 (denoted by “AP” in FIG. 10) and three non-AP STAs 104_1-104_N (denoted by “STA1” , “STA2” and “STA3” in FIG. 10) , where AP’s CBW is 160 MHz, and non-AP STA’s CBW is 80 MHz. AP uses an ICF to trigger STA1 and STA2 to switch to a subband (i.e., secondary 80MHz channel (S80) ) , and require them to respond using dRU484 (i.e., distributed 484-tone RU) , respectively. In addition, AP also triggers STA3 to stay at the primary 80MHz channel (P80) , and requires it to respond using rRU996. After receiving the ICF, all STA1, STA2 and STA3 check the channel status and determine that the channel status is idle, and respond with ICRs, where STA1 and STA2 use a dRU format in S80 and STA3 uses an rRU format in P80. AP detects that each 20MHz bandwidth of S80 is available, and can utilize the MU-MIMO mechanism to transmit DL data to STA1 and STA2 on S80.

[0042] FIG. 11 is a diagram illustrating a second data transmission scenario according to an embodiment of the present invention. Suppose that the wireless communication system 100 shown in FIG. 1 has one AP 102 (denoted by “AP” in FIG. 11) and three non-AP STAs 104_1-104_N (denoted by “STA1” , “STA2” and “STA3” in FIG. 11) , where AP’s CBW is 160 MHz, and non-AP STA’s CBW is 80 MHz. AP uses an ICF to trigger STA1 and STA2 to switch to a subband (i.e., secondary 80MHz channel (S80) ) , and require them to respond using dRU484, respectively. In addition, AP also triggers STA3 to stay at the primary 80MHz channel (P80) , and requires it to respond using rRU996. After receiving the ICF, all STA1, STA2 and STA3 check the channel status. However, STA1 doesn’ t respond due to at least one 20MHz bandwidth in S80 being busy. STA2 and STA3 determine that the channel status is idle, and respond with ICRs, where STA2 uses a dRU format in S80 and STA3 uses an rRU format in P80. AP detects that each 20MHz bandwidth of S80 is available for STA2, and can utilize the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) mechanism to transmit DL data to STA2 on S80.

[0043] When triggered to use a dRU format in an ICR, the non-AP STA senses all subband channel statuses, and responds when all subband channel statuses are idle. The AP can check occurrence of an ICF from the non-AP STA to determine if the non-AP STA has successfully switched to a target subband. In this way, there is a better choice to support MU-MIMO based on the dRU response.

[0044] Those skilled in the art will readily observe that numerous modifications and alterations of the device and method may be made while retaining the teachings of the invention. Accordingly, the above disclosure should be construed as limited only by the metes and bounds of the appended claims.
