Description

[0001] AIR FILTER HOLDERS, POCKET FILTER OR FILTER CARTRIDGE AND METHOD FOR KEEPING A POCKET FILTER OR FILTER CARTRIDGE CLOSED

[0002] Field of invention

[0003] The invention is related to pocket filters and filter cartridges comprising a woven fabric and / or non-woven fabric air filter.

[0004] Technical background

[0005] Pocket filters and filter cartridges comprising a woven fabric and / or non-woven fabric air filter are air filters used in HPAC applications to remove dust from the surrounding air. They are typically used as final filters in various commercial applications, such as ventilation equipment or fans. They can also be used as preliminary filters of fine filters, such as HEPA filters, in applications such as health care, hospitals or industrial facilities (especially in clean rooms and production facilities in the pharmaceutical industry) .

[0006] The filter material used in the air filter of such pocket filters and filter cartridges is woven fabric or preferably non-woven fabric.

[0007] Prior art includes filter cartridges generally comprising an air filter, where the air filter is replaceable. All these are intended for paper air filters. One such filter cartridge is known from international patent application publication WO 2022 / 184025 Al. It describes a reusable filter system and filter frames, into which a replaceable pleated filter made of paper can be set. One such filter cartridge is known from US patent application publication US 2003 / 0230063 Al. It also describes a reusable filter system and filter frames, into which a replaceable pleated filter made of paper can be set. Also the US patent application publication US 2022 / 0331730 Al describes a reusable filter system and filter frames, into which one or more replaceable pleated filters made of paper can be set.

[0008] Objective of invention

[0009] Prior art filter cartridges, which as a rule comprise a paper air filter that is delivered so that the paper air filter is folded together, have usage and handling characteristics other that pocket filters or filter cartridges, where the filter material used in the air filter included in them is woven fabric and / or non-woven fabric.

[0010] Especially the characteristics related to the recovery of form are completely different between the filter types. This can be understood by thinking how a sheet of paper behaves as compared to woven fabric or, say, felt (which is one type of non-woven fabric) , when these are pressed into a ball: The paper remains as a crumpled ball while woven fabric and non-woven fabric attempt to restore their earlier shape, non-woven fabric probably even more so than woven fabric. This is primarily due to the differences in the fibre structure contained in the air filter: cellulose fibres break up while the fibres typically used in woven fabric are more pliant, and in non-woven fabric the ability of the fibres to absorb energy is also easily much greater than in woven fabric.

[0011] Pocket filters or filter cartridges that comprise an air filter conventionally consist of two main components: frame and filter part. The structure of pocket filters or filter cartridges that comprise a woven fabric and / or non-woven fabric air filter, known to the inventor, cannot be disassembled, which is why when the filter is replaced, both the frame and the filter part need to be replaced. This leads to extra material consumption and raises the price to be paid by the end user.

[0012] A first objective of the invention is to improve the performance of an environmentally-f riendly pocket filter or filter cartridge or to facilitate the use of an environmentally-friendly pocket filter or filter cartridge.

[0013] This objective can be accomplished in accordance with a first aspect of the invention by means of an air filter holder in accordance with claims 1 - 9 and by means of a pocket filter or filter cartridge in accordance with claim 12.

[0014] A second objective of the invention is to facilitate the use of an environmentally-friendly pocket filter or filter cartridge. In addition to this, this objective can be accomplished in accordance with a second aspect of the invention by means of an air filter holder in accordance with claims 10 or 11 and by means of a pocket filter or filter cartridge in accordance with claim 13 .

[0015] A third obj ective of the invention is to facilitate the use of a pocket filter or filter cartridge equipped with a replaceable ai r filter . This obj ective can be accomplished in accordance with a thi rd aspect of the invention by means of a method in accordance with claim 14 and in accordance with a fourth aspect of the invention by means of a method in accordance with claim 15 .

[0016] In order to accomplish the third obj ective of the invention a ) the method in accordance with the third aspect of the invention advantageously uses the air filter holder and / or pocket filter ( or filter cartridge ) in accordance with the first aspect of the invention and b ) the method in accordance with the fourth aspect of the invention advantageously us es the air filter holder and / or pocket filter ( or filter cartridge ) in accordance with the second aspect of the invention .

[0017] The dependent claims des cribe the advantageous implementation options of the air filter holders .

[0018] The term " filter cartridge" intends to cover all air filters of di fferent types , excluding pocket filters , especially, for example, cartridge filters , panel filters , fan convector filters , antis tatic filters and activated carbon filters . All o f these are referred to here and in what follows j ointly with the term " filter cartridge" .

[0019] Advantages of invention

[0020] The air filter holder in accordance with the first aspect of the invention comprises :

[0021] - a frame-like support framework and a frame-like cover, which cover is placeable over the support framework so that the cover settles in the lateral direction in a formrestricted manner over the support framework, forming a frame together with the support framework, whi ch frame i ) de fines the filter area in the lateral direction and on the other hand als o ii ) becomes hollow, leaving a free volume on the inside for receiving the filter ; and a number of fasteners;

[0022] In addition to this, in the air filter holder:

[0023] - the support framework and cover are closable with respect to each other with a number of fasteners by pressing them against each other in order to compress the air filter (4) to be installed in the free volume of the air filter holder, after which the support framework (1) and cover (2) can be kept closed by means of a number of fasteners (3) , which are slid over the frame from the outer edge of the frame in the lateral direction, which number of fasteners (3) keep the support framework (1) and cover (2) closed by becoming tightened when the compressed air filter attempts to decompress, most advantageously by means of the tension caused by the elastic deformation of the number of fasteners (3) .

[0024] In the filter holder in accordance with the first aspect of the invention, it is possible to utilise the recovery of form characteristics of a woven fabric and / or non-woven fabric air filter in two ways. Firstly, it is possible to seal the air filter in the filter holder to prevent by-pass flows by compressing it between the support framework and cover. Secondly, the tendency of the air filter to decompress can be utilised in keeping the frame closed, in other words by keeping the support framework and cover closed with respect to each other.

[0025] In accordance with an advantageous aspect, there are at least two fasteners, and the fasteners can be pushed over the frame from the opposite outer edges of the frame. It is easy to disassemble such frame into parts for cleaning, for example.

[0026] In addition to this or alternatively to this, one outer edge of the frame can be hinged so that the hinge assembly is between the support framework and cover, enabling that the frame stays intact when the filter is replaced, and where the number of fasteners can be pushed over the frame from the outer edge opposite to and / or adjacent to the hinge assembly. The hinge assembly enables that the support framework and cover part of the frame stay together when opened. The fasteners most advantageously are or contain an essentially slotlike and / or U-shaped profile.

[0027] The slot-like and / or U-shaped profile is most advantageously implemented so that the inner width of the slot and / or U-profile is greater than the thickness of the outer edge of the frame formed together by the cover and support framework. In this case, it is possible to ensure that the air filter to be installed in the frame, when compressed, compresses to achieve a sufficient tightness, because the fastener will not fasten otherwise. In this way, it is possible to detect potential installation defects in good time. As an example, if the faulty installation of a pocket filter or filter cartridge is not detected in the installation stage, it can easily happen that when the pocket filter or filter cartridge is used to pressurise the painting chamber of a paint shop, faulty installation is not detected until later, when the painted surface turns out to be dusty. It is easily both laborious and expensive to afterwards correct faults created by the faulty installation of such a pocket filter or filter cartridge, and it is not always even possible to correct the faults.

[0028] In accordance with an advantageous aspect, the fastener remains in place in a force-restricted manner. This facilitates the installation of the pocket filter or filter cartridge. By ensuring that the tendency of the filter to decompress is sufficiently strong, it is possible to control the force required to keep the fastener in place so that the fastener does not fall off by accident, for example, by the effect of gravitation.

[0029] The air filter holder can further comprise a number of cross-members extending over the frame for receiving the air filter. This is advantageous especially when the air filter includes several bag-like parts so that the cross-members can serve as a support for the part of the air filter between these bag-like parts. On the other hand, the cross-members increase the form rigidity of the air filter holder and therefore make it easier to retain the compression of the air filter and hence also prevent any by-pass flow if the air filter is subject to torsion. I f the air filter holder comprises a mesh or lattice fastened to the support framework and / or a mesh or lattice fastened to the cover for supporting the air filter, it is pos sible to us e the air filter holder to support the air filter to stay in form, espe cially i f the area of the air filter is relatively large . This can be used to add to the form rigidity o f the air filter and hence to contribute to retaining the compres sion of the air filter and therefore al so to prevent any by-pas s flow .

[0030] The mesh or lattice may include in the lateral direction folds in the shape of the letter W for receiving a pleated filter . This may help increase the filtering area of the air filter in the filter frame .

[0031] The pocket filter or filter cartridge in accordance with the first aspect of the invention compris es an ai r filter holder in accordance with the first aspect of the invention and also a replaceable woven fabric and / or non-woven fabric air filter, and where the cover i s placed over the support framework so that the cover i s placed in the lateral direction in a form-res tricted manner over the support framework, forming a frame together with the support framework, whi ch frame i ) defines a usable filter area for the filter in the lateral di rection and where the ai r filter is es sentially compres sed in the free volume remaining between the support framework and cover, and where a number of fas teners is arranged to keep the support framework and cover closed with respect to each other by becoming tightened when the compres sed air filter attempts to decompres s , mos t advantageously by means of the tension caused by the elastic deformation of the number of fas teners .

[0032] In this way, it is pos sible to utilise the recovery of form characteristi cs of the woven fabric and / or non-woven fabric air filter in the pocket filter or filter cartridge in two ways . Firstly, it is pos sible to seal the air filter in the filter holder to prevent bypas s flows by compres sing it between the support framework and cover . Secondly, the tendency of the air filter to decompres s can be utilised in keeping the frame closed, in other words by keeping the support framework and cover closed with respect to each other . The air filter holder in accordance with a parallel second aspect of the invention (whi ch ai r filter holder can also be an air filter holder in accordance with the firs t aspect of the invention ) comprises a frame-like support framework and a mesh or lattice fastened to the support framework and / or a mesh or lattice fastened to the cover for supporting the filter, where form fasteners , such as hooks or rivets , are used in the mesh or lattice for fas tening the filter . Such an air filter holder may also have a slot into which the air filter to be fastened is installed by pushing, for example .

[0033] The mesh si ze of the mesh or lattice is most advantageously adapted to suspend the back part of the form fas teners .

[0034] The pocket filter or filter cartridge in accordance with the s econd aspect of the invention comprises an air filter holder , which compri ses a frame-li ke support framework and / or a frame-like cover, and a mesh or lattice fastened to one of these , onto whi ch mesh or lattice form fasteners comprising one or more strip-like perforation parts has been fastened, and the filter is fastened by means of the form fas teners by perforating the filter on the perforation part , most advantageously so that the mesh si ze of the mesh or lattice is adapted to be such that the back part of the form fastener is suspended from the mesh or lattice by pushing it through a mesh hole .

[0035] The form fasteners comprise one or more strip-li ke perforation parts . Due to the strip-like design, the by-pas s flow caused by the perforation part can be kept under control and even minimised .

[0036] In accordance with the third aspect o f the invention, the method for keeping the pocket filter or filter cartridge equipped with a replaceable woven fabric and / or non-woven fabric air filter closed utilises the tendency of the woven fabric and / or non-woven fabric air filter compres sed in the pocket filter ( or correspondingly in the filter cartridge ) - which most advantageous ly is a pocket filter or filter cartridge in accordance with the first aspect o f the invention - upon installation to decompres s in order to keep the cover and support framework of the pocket filter or filter cover closed to tighten the fas teners used, most advantageously by means of the tension caused by the elas tic de formation of the fasteners . In accordance with the fourth aspect of the invention, the method for fastening the air filter of the pocket filter or filter cartridge utilises openings made in the mesh or lattice included in the pocket filter (or correspondingly in the filter cartridge) - which most advantageously is a pocket filter or filter cartridge in accordance with the second aspect of the invention - to fasten the woven fabric and / or non-woven fabric air filter by means of the form fasteners so that the air filter is pierced with one or more strip-like perforation parts of the form fastener, and the fastening of the form fastener to the mesh or lattice is secured by suspending the back part of the form fastener from the other side by taking strip-like fastening parts through the mesh holes in the mesh or lattice.

[0037] The fasteners can be made of steel, most preferably of stainless steel and best of stainless spring steel. The support framework and cover can also be made of steel and most preferably of stainless steel. The steel used is advantageously steel sheet with a thickness of 0.6 to 1.0 mm. The inventor has discovered that steel sheet with a thickness of 0.8 mm works best. The fasteners can also be made of plastic or other applicable material.

[0038] In order to reduce own weight and especially when the frame size increases, it is advantageous to manufacture at least the support framework or cover from aluminium. In this case, the fasteners are most advantageously manufactured from aluminium or plastic.

[0102] In other words :

[0103] A filter solution has now been invented to support the green transition and savings in materials . It enables a s igni ficant reduction in material cos ts . The inventor has developed a reusable frame for pocket filters and filter cartridges . Unli ke conventional pocket filters or filter cartridges , this frame i s disas semblable , which enables that only filter parts ( cartridges ) need to be replaced while the frame is retained .

[0104] This unique structure of the reusable frame confirms its innovative and unique nature . This s olution allows users to reduce the amount of waste and extend the li fe o f the reusable parts of the filters . The method o f implementation i s also economical and, depending on price setting, may al so provide an opportunity for savings .

[0105] FOR WHAT PURPOSE?

[0106] Unlike disposable pocket filters and filter cartridges , this technology enables the replacement of j us t the air filter instead of the entire pocket filter and filter cartridge . This means that no separate recycling of plastics or metals is needed, and there i s no need to make another payment for these valuable materials . It is also easier and cheaper to transport the filters (cartridges) : they are lighter in weight and take less space in packaging than disposable filters. The replacement of the filters presented in this solution is no more complicated than the re-installation of disposable filters, and it can easily be carried out by anyone without specific training. The size of the filters can typically be 1 x 1 metre or, say, 40 x 60 cm. Now that they can be delivered separately from a rigid frame (because the frame is reused) , space can be saved in transport .

[0107] Thanks to the convenient frame, the assembly and disassembly of the frame can be carried out in a simple and fast manner.

[0108] The main types of air filters are: cartridge filters, pocket filters, panel filters, fan convector filters, antistatic filters, activated carbon filters. Of these, cartridge filter, panel filter, fan convector filter, antistatic filter and activated carbon filter are referred to here jointly with the term "filter cartridge".

[0109] The air filters are manufactured either as analogues of disposable filters or in accordance with the technical requirements of the device .

[0111] PANEL FILTERS Used in residential complexes, office and shopping centres, industrial facilities as well as in painting and drying chambers, compressor equipment and other corresponding demanding air purification equipment.

[0112] FAN CONVECTOR FILTERS Necessary for the appropriate operation of industrial air-conditioning systems.

[0113] ANTISTATIC FILTERS Wide range of uses in industries.

[0114] ACTIVATED CARBON FILTERS Intended for the purification of air from unpleasant odours and detrimental substances. These filters are necessary in multi-stage purification systems. The two main parts of the pocket filter and filter cartridge are frame and air filter. The structure of ordinary (disposable) pocket filters and filter cartridges cannot be disassembled, which is why both parts need to be replaced in the replacement of a disposable pocket filter and filter cartridge, which leads to extra consumption of raw materials. I have invented a frame that can be used for a long period of time, by just replacing the filter cartridges, without making compromises with filtration standards. The frame of the reusable pocket filters and filter cartridges is openable. Its structure is described in the drawings and description of the invention.

[0115] Benefits of the reusable pocket filters and filter cartridges :

[0116] The price is lower than the price of an ordinary disposable filter.

[0117] Easy to use.

[0118] The mere air filter is lighter in weight and smaller in size than a pocket filter or filter cartridge, which is why it is more convenient to deliver it to the device for replacement.

[0119] Easier and less expensive to dispose of, only a fraction of the filter waste material needs to be disposed of.

[0120] Most advantageously does not contain any metal, plastic or silicone parts .

[0121] Less expensive delivery of the air filter is possible due to reduced weight. The air filters can be vacuum-packed for delivery.

[0122] High reliability of the frame.

[0123] Metal with a thickness of 0.8 mm is preferably used.

[0124] Supports the green transition.

[0125] The production process of the reusable filter can be implemented in the desired manner depending on the filter type. The primary manufacturing methods are spot welding, riveting and separate support and cover frames. Some of the embodiments enable the replacement of a damaged part. List of reference numbers used:
