[0001] The following application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. § 119 (e) to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 63 / 668,808 filed July 09, 2024 entitled EXSTROPHY BRACE AND METHOD OF USE. [0002] The present disclosure generally relates to an exstrophy brace and method of use, and more particularly to a selectively removable single body thermoplastic exstrophy brace.BACKGROUND
[0003] Bladder exstrophy is a congenital anomaly causing a defect in abdominal wall closure. An osteotomy surgery is required to reduce tension and allow closure of the abdominal cavity. A spica cast, which is semi -permanent and cumbersome, is often placed postoperatively for immobilization and to allow healing of the osteotomy site. In pre-existing hip abduction braces, the leg and hip positioning do not meet current abduction and flexion immobilization needs following bladder exstrophy surgery, making bathing and incision site inspection difficult, and leading to an increased risk of postoperative complication.SUMMARY
[0004] One aspect of the present disclosure comprises an exstrophy brace for immobilization after surgery is described herein. The exstrophy brace includes a single body thermoplastic body support defining a torso support section for supporting a torso of a user during use, the torso support defining a channel terminating in a body opening; the torso support extending along a longitudinal axis, a rear support section extending from the torso support section at a thigh angle, the thigh angle between 85° to 95°, the rear support section for supporting glutes of the user during use, the rear support extending into discrete first and second thigh support sections, the first and second thigh support sections defining convex arcs that terminate into first and second thigh openings, and first and second calf support sections extending form the first and second thigh support sections at a calf angle, respectively, the calf angle between 85° to 95°, the first and second calf support sections defining convex arcs that terminate into first and second calf openings, the first calf support section positioned at an abduction angle relative to the longitudinal axis extending down a center of the torso support, the abduction angle between 10° and 35°.

The exstrophy brace further includes first and second selectively removable thigh straps that extend over the first and second thigh openings when in use, the first and second selectively removable thigh straps coupled to the first and second thigh supports, respectively and first and second selectively removable calf straps that extend over the first and second calf openings when in use, the first and second selectively removable calf straps coupled to the first and second calf supports, respectively.

[0014] FIG. 1 illustrates a schematic diagram of an exstrophy brace 100. in accordance with one of the exemplary- embodiments of the disclosure. The exstrophy brace 100 includes a single body support 102. In one example embodiment, the single body support 102 comprises thermo-plastic. In one example embodiment, the thermoplastic comprises polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, polycarbonate and / or a combination thereof. In one example embodiment, the exstrophy brace 100 is moldable, wherein select portions of the single body support 102 canbe molded to better fit a user using mild heat. In this example embodiment, mild heat is between 160° F to about 300° F.
[0015] The support 102 includes a torso support section 104, rear and thigh support sections 108, 110, and calf support sections 114, 116. In this example embodiment, the torso support section 104 supports a torso of a user from about the 9ththoracic vertebrae (T9) to the tail bone or rear of a pelvis, the thigh support sections 108, 110 support a pelvis and thighs of the user, and the calf support sections 114, 116 support from calf from a knee to an ankle of the user. In one example embodiment, the torso support section 104 defines a torso channel or a convex arc 130. In this example embodiment, a rear portion 104a of the torso support section 104 is substantially linear, and transitions into and spaces two arced side portions 104b, 104c along a lateral axis LAT. As illustrated in the example embodiment of FIG. 3, the two arced side portions 104b, 104c extend a first distance 106a from the rear portion 104a toward a top edge of the torso support section 104. The top edge opposite the pelvis and thigh support sections 114, 116. In one example embodiment, the two arced side portions 104b, 104c extend a second distance 106b from the rear portion 104a at a bottom edge of the torso support section 104, where the torso support section meets the pelvis and thigh support sections 114, 116. Stated another way, the top edge extends farther from the rear portion 104a than at or near the bottom edge of the torso support section 104. The two arced side portions 104b, 104c and the rear portion 104a define a body opening 104d that opens into the channel or convex arc 130. When in use, the two arced side portions 104b, 104c are in contact with and support the right and left sides of the user respectively, and the rear portion 104a is in contact with and supports the back of the user.

[0018] As illustrated in the example embodiments of FIGS. 1-3, the rear and thigh support sections 108, 110 are substantially mirror images of one another as taken along the longitudinal axis LONG illustrated in FIG. 2. Herein, the rear and thigh support section 110 will be described in detail, wherein it is understood that the rear and thigh support section 108 is the substantially mirror image of the rear and thigh support 110. In the example embodiment of FIG. 3, the rear and thigh support section 110 extends at a thigh angle 111 from the rear portion 104a of the torso support section 104 along the longitudinal axis LONG. In one example embodiment, the thigh angle 111 is between 70° to about 95°. In anotherexample embodiment, the thigh angle 111 is about 90°.
[0019] In one example embodiment, the rear and thigh support 110 defines a first rear support 110a and a first thigh support 110b, wherein the first rear support 110a in conjunction with a second rear support 108a is a substantially planar surface that links the thigh supports 108b, 110b to the torso support section 104. In this example embodiment, the thigh supports 108b, 110b define discrete thigh channels or convex arcs 132, 134 that are linked to each other via the first and second rear supports 110a, 108a. In another example embodiment, the thigh channels or convex arcs 132, 134 define half circles that are linked to each other via the first and second rear supports 110a, 108a. In this example embodiment, a first and second rear supports 110a, 108a are substantially linear and transitions the torso support section 104 into the thigh support 108b, 110b. In this example embodiment, when in use, the rear supports 108a, 110a, cover at least some of an anterior portion of the user uncovered by the rear supports. In one example embodiment, the thigh support 110b supports a right thigh of the user and the thigh support 108b supports a left thigh of the user. In another example embodiment, the thigh support 110b supports and is in contact with a posterior portion of the right thigh while leaving an anterior portion of the right thigh uncovered and the thigh support 108b supports and is in contact with a posterior portion of the left thigh of the user while leaving an anterior portion of the left thigh uncovered.

Herein, the calf support section 114 will be described in detail, wherein it is understood that the calf support section 114 is the substantially mirror image of the calf support section 116. In the example embodiment of FIG. 3, the calf support section 114 extends at a calf angle 113 from the thigh portion 110b of the rear and thigh section 110 along a calf axis C-AXIS. In this example embodiment, the thigh distance 112 is utilized to size the exstrophy brace 100 to the user, wherein a length of the user’s thigh is matched to the thigh distance 112. In another example embodiment, the exstrophy brace 100 is formed based on measurements of the user.

CLAIMSWhat is claimed is:
1. An exstrophy brace for immobilization after surgery', the exstrophy brace comprising: a single body thermoplastic body support defining: a torso support section for supporting a torso of a user during use, the torso support defining a channel terminating in a body opening; the torso support extending along a longitudinal axis; a rear support section extending from the torso support section at a thigh angle, the thigh angle between 85° to 95°, the rear support section for supporting glutes of the user during use, the rear support extending into discrete first and second thigh support sections, the first and second thigh support sections defining convex arcs that terminate to define first and second thigh openings; and first and second calf support sections extending form the first and second thigh support sections at a calf angle, respectively, the calf angle between 85° to 95°, the first and second calf support section terminate to define first and second calf openings, the first calf support section positioned at an abduction angle relative to the longitudinal axis extending down a center of the torso support, the abduction angle between 10° and 35°.
2. The exstrophy brace of claim 1, further comprising first and second selectively removable thigh straps that extend over the first and second thigh openings when in use. the first and second selectively’ removable thigh straps coupled to the first and second thigh supports, respectively.
3. The exstrophy brace of claim 1, first and second selectively removable calf straps that extend over the first and second calf openings when in use, the first and second selectively removable calf straps coupled to the first and second calf supports, respectively.
4. The exstrophy brace of claim 1, wherein a first selectively removable strap extends over the body opening when in use, the first selectively removable straps coupled to the torso support section.
5. The exstrophy brace of claim 1, wherein the thigh angle is 90°.
6. The exstrophy brace of claim 1, wherein the calf angle is 90°.
7. The exstrophy brace of claim 1, wherein the abduction angle is 10°.
8. The exstrophy brace of claim 1 , wherein the first and second calf support sections support and are in contact with a posterior portion of a calf of a wearer while leaving an anterior portion of the calf uncovered.
9. The exstrophy brace of claim 1, wherein the first and second calf support section define one of discrete calf channels, convex arcs, or half circles.
10. The exstrophy brace of claim 1, wherein the rear support section defines first and second rear supports, wherein the first rear support in conjunction with the second rearsupport defines a substantially planar surface that links the thigh support sections to the torso support section.
11. The exstrophy brace of claim 1 , wherein when in use, the rear support section is in contact with and support the glutes of a user while leaving at least a portion of an anterior portion of a torso of the user uncovered.
12. The exstrophy brace of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic comprises polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, polycarbonate and / or a combination thereof.

An exstrophy brace for immobilization after surgery, the exstrophy brace comprising: a single body support defining: a torso support section for supporting a torso of a user during use, the torso support defining a channel terminating in a body opening; the torso support extending along a longitudinal axis; a rear support section extending from the torso support section at a thigh angle, the thigh angle between 85° to 95°, the rear support section for supporting glutes of the user during use, the rear support extending into discrete first and second thigh support sections, the first and second thigh support sections defining convex arcs that terminate to define first and second thigh openings; first and second calf support sections extending form the first and second thigh support sections at a calf angle, respectively, the calf angle between 85° to 95° the first and second calf support section terminate to define first and second calf openings, the first calfsupport section positioned at an abduction angle relative to the longitudinal axis extending dow n a center of the torso support, the abduction angle betw een 10° and 35°; first and second selectively removable thigh straps that extend over the first and second thigh openings when in use, the first and second selectively removable thigh straps coupled to the first and second thigh supports, respectively; and first and second selectively removable calf straps that extend over the first and second calf openings when in use, the first and second selectively removable calf straps coupled to the first and second calf supports, respectively.
14. The exstrophy brace of claim 13, wherein a first selectively removable strap extends over the body opening when in use, the first selectively removable straps coupled to the torso support section.
15. The exstrophy brace of claim 14, wherein single body is molded from a thermoplastic, wherein portions defining at least one of the first and second calf openings, the first and second thigh openings, the body opening are moldable to increase or decrease a size of respective opening in the presence of a mild heat.
16. The exstrophy brace of claim 13, wherein single body is molded from a thermoplastic.
17. The exstrophy brace of claim 13, wherein the thigh angle is 90°, the calf angle is 90°. and the abduction angle is 10°.

An exstrophy brace for immobilization after surgery, the exstrophy brace comprising:a single body support comprised of a thermoplastic, the single body defining: a torso support section for supporting a torso of a user during use, the torso support defining a channel terminating in a body opening; the torso support extending along a longitudinal axis; a rear support section extending from the torso support section at a thigh angle, the thigh angle between 85° to 95°, the rear support section for supporting glutes of the user during use, the rear support extending into discrete first and second thigh support sections, the first and second thigh support sections defining convex arcs that terminate to define first and second thigh openings, wherein the rear support section defines first and second rear supports, wherein the first rear support in conjunction with the second rear support defines a substantially planar surface that links the thigh support sections to the torso support section.; first and second calf support sections extending form the first and second thigh support sections at a calf angle, respectively, the calf angle between 85° to 95°, the first and second calf support section define one of discrete calf channels, convex arcs, or half circles which terminate to define first and second calf openings, the first calf support section positioned at an abduction angle relative to the longitudinal axis extending down a center of the torso support, the abduction angle between 10° and 35°; first and second selectively removable thigh straps that extend over the first and second thigh openings when in use, the first and second selectively removable thigh straps coupled to the first and second thigh supports, respectively; and first and second selectively removable calf straps that extend over the first and second calf openings when in use. the first and second selectively removable calf straps coupled to the first and second calf supports, respectively.
19. The exstrophy brace of claim 18, wherein the thigh angle is 90°, the calf angle is 90°, and the abduction angle is 10°.
20. The exstrophy brace of claim 18, wherein portions defining at least one of the first and second calf openings, the first and second thigh openings, the body opening are moldable to increase or decrease a size of respective opening in the presence of a mild heat.
