AI Technical Summary
Existing wireless communication systems face inefficiencies in power consumption and signaling overhead due to unnecessary periodic paging messages, especially when few or no UEs are present in the coverage area, leading to increased energy expenditure by network entities and user equipment.
Configuring specific time and frequency resources for paging messages using a bitmap structure that indicates which UEs should monitor for paging, allowing devices to reduce power consumption by processing only intended messages.
This approach reduces power consumption and signaling overhead by enabling UEs and network entities to determine when to monitor for paging messages, thereby optimizing energy usage and transmission frequency.

[0025] A wireless communications system may include one or more devices (e.g., UEs and NEs) that exchange signaling. For example, a NE notifies a UE of an incoming data transmission using one or more paging messages. The NE transmits paging messages using one or more time and frequency resources, such as paging occasions (POs) in the time domain and subcarriers in the frequency domain, that the UE monitors periodically. When the UE detects a paging message addressed to the UE, the UE initiates a connection establishment procedure with the NE to receive the incoming data transmission. When the UE is not monitoring for paging messages and / or when the NE is not transmitting the paging messages, the UE and the NE may transition to a mode that uses less power (e.g., an idle or inactive mode, also referred to as an RRC inactive state or an RRC idle state). However, periodic paging messages may be unnecessary, such as if few or none of the UEs being paged are actually present in a coverage area of a NE, leading to increased power consumption while the NE transmits the periodic paging messages rather than transitioning to the idle or inactive mode.
[0026] As described herein, to reduce power consumption at a NE and / or a UE for transmitting and receiving paging messages, a NE may configure (e.g., preconfigure or define) time and frequency resources allocated for paging messages. The NE may transmit control signaling, such as a paging DCI, to a UE that includes a bitmap indicating whether the UE is to receive a pagingAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT7 message in the configured time and frequency resources. For example, the bitmap may include a first set of bits that represents different subgroups of UEs and a second set of bits that represents UE identifiers for UEs in subgroups with UEs that are to receive a paging message. If the paging message is intended for the UE, then a bit value of the bit for the subgroup including the UE may have a value of one and a bit value of the bit for the UE identifier (e.g., or a group of UE identifiers including the UE identifier) may also have a value of one. The UE may monitor for the paging message in the configured time and frequency resources.
[0027] By configuring time and frequency resources and subsequently transmitting control signaling including a bitmap that indicates for UEs to monitor for paging messages, a NE and a UE may reduce power consumption and signaling overhead. The NE may reduce a transmission frequency of the paging messages by consolidating POs by implementing the bitmap structure. For example, the bitmap provides for an improved level of granularity of paging messages to UEs, as UEs may determine when to monitor for a paging message according to the bitmap. Thus, a UE may also reduce power consumption by processing paging messages that are intended for the UE and not processing paging messages intended for other UEs.
[0028] Reference is made herein to communicating information related to paging messages, as well as paging messages, including transmitting or receiving signaling between devices. It is to be appreciated that other terms may be used interchangeably with communicating, such as signaling, transmitting, receiving, outputting, forwarding, retrieving, obtaining, and so forth.
[0029] Aspects of the present disclosure are described in the context of a wireless communications system.
[0030] Figure 1 illustrates an example of a wireless communications system 100 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The wireless communications system 100 may include one or more NEs 102, one or more UEs 104, and a core network (CN) 106. The wireless communications system 100 may support various radio access technologies. In some implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a 4G network, such as an LTE network or an LTE- Advanced (LTE-A) network. In some other implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a new radio (NR) network, such as a 5G network, a 5G-Advanced (5G-A) network, or a 5G ultrawideband (5G-UWB) network. In other implementations, the wireless communications systemAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT8100 may be a combination of a 4G network and a 5G network, or other suitable radio access technology including Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 (Wi-Fi), IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX), IEEE 802.20. The wireless communications system 100 may support radio access technologies beyond 5G, for example, 6G. Additionally, the wireless communications system 100 may support technologies, such as time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), or code division multiple access (CDMA), etc.
[0031] The one or more NEs 102 may be dispersed throughout a geographic region to form the wireless communications system 100. One or more of the NEs 102 described herein may be or include or may be referred to as a network node, a base station, an access point (AP), a network element, a network function, a network entity, a radio access network (RAN), a NodeB, an eNodeB (eNB), a next-generation NodeB (gNB), or other suitable terminology. An NE 102 and a UE 104 may communicate via a communication link, which may be a wireless or wired connection. For example, an NE 102 and a UE 104 may perform wireless communication (e.g., receive signaling, transmit signaling) over a Uu interface.
[0032] An NE 102 may provide a geographic coverage area for which the NE 102 may support services for one or more UEs 104 within the geographic coverage area. For example, an NE 102 and a UE 104 may support wireless communication of signals related to services (e.g., voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, etc.) according to one or multiple radio access technologies. In some implementations, an NE 102 may be moveable, for example, a satellite associated with a non-terrestrial network (NTN). In some implementations, different geographic coverage areas associated with the same or different radio access technologies may overlap, but the different geographic coverage areas may be associated with different NE 102.
[0033] The one or more UEs 104 may be dispersed throughout a geographic region of the wireless communications system 100. A UE 104 may include or may be referred to as a remote unit, a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a subscriber device, a transmitter device, a receiver device, or some other suitable terminology. In some implementations, the UE 104 may be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client, among other examples. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE 104 may be referred to as an Internet-of-Things (loT) device, an Internet-of- Everything (loE) device, or machine-type communication (MTC) device, among other examples.Attorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT9
[0034] A UE 104 may be able to support wireless communication directly with other UEs 104 over a communication link. For example, a UE 104 may support wireless communication directly with another UE 104 over a device-to-device (D2D) communication link. In some implementations, such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) deployments, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) deployments, or cellular-V2X deployments, the communication link may be referred to as a sidelink. For example, a UE 104 may support wireless communication directly with another UE 104 over a PC5 interface.
[0035] An NE 102 may support communications with the CN 106, or with another NE 102, or both. For example, an NE 102 may interface with other NE 102 or the CN 106 through one or more backhaul links (e.g., SI, N2, N6, or other network interface). In some implementations, the NE 102 may communicate with each other directly. In some other implementations, the NE 102 may communicate with each other indirectly (e.g., via the CN 106). In some implementations, one or more NEs 102 may include subcomponents, such as an access network entity, which may be an example of an access node controller (ANC). An ANC may communicate with the one or more UEs 104 through one or more other access network transmission entities, which may be referred to as a radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmission-reception points (TRPs).
[0036] The CN 106 may support user authentication, access authorization, tracking, connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The CN 106 may be an evolved packet core (EPC), or a 5G core (5GC), which may include a control plane entity that manages access and mobility (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME), an access and mobility management functions (AMF)) and a user plane entity that routes packets or interconnects to external networks (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW), a packet data network (PDN) gateway (P-GW), or a user plane function (UPF)). In some implementations, the control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management (e.g., data bearers, signal bearers, etc.) for the one or more UEs 104 served by the one or more NEs 102 associated with the CN 106.
[0037] The CN 106 may communicate with a packet data network over one or more backhaul links (e.g., via an SI, N2, N6, or other network interface). The packet data network may include an application server. In some implementations, one or more UEs 104 may communicate with the application server. A UE 104 may establish a session (e.g., a protocol data unit (PDU) session, or the like) with the CN 106 via an NE 102. The CN 106 may route traffic (e.g., control information,Attorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT10 data, and the like) between the UE 104 and the application server using the established session (e.g., the established PDU session). The PDU session may be an example of a logical connection between the UE 104 and the CN 106 (e.g., one or more network functions of the CN 106).
[0038] In the wireless communications system 100, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may use resources of the wireless communications system 100 (e.g., time resources (e.g., symbols, slots, subframes, frames, or the like) or frequency resources (e.g., subcarriers, carriers)) to perform various operations (e.g., wireless communications). In some implementations, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support different resource structures. For example, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support different frame structures. In some implementations, such as in 4G, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support a single frame structure. In some other implementations, such as in 5G and among other suitable radio access technologies, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures (i.e., multiple frame structures). The NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures based on one or more numerologies.
[0039] One or more numerologies may be supported in the wireless communications system 100, and a numerology may include a subcarrier spacing and a cyclic prefix. A first numerology (e.g., / r=0) may be associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kilohertz (kHz)) and a normal cyclic prefix. In some implementations, the first numerology (e.g., / r=0) associated with the first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may utilize one slot per subframe. A second numerology (e.g., / r=l) may be associated with a second subcarrier spacing (e.g., 30 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A third numerology (e.g., / r=2) may be associated with a third subcarrier spacing (e.g., 60 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix or an extended cyclic prefix. A fourth numerology (e.g., / r=3) may be associated with a fourth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 120 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A fifth numerology (e.g., / r=4) may be associated with a fifth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 240 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix.
[0040] A time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to frames (also referred to as radio frames). Each frame may have a duration, for example, a 10 millisecond (ms) duration. In some implementations, each frame may include multiple subframes. For example, each frame may include 10 subframes, and each subframe may have a duration, for example, a 1 ms duration. In some implementations, each frame may have the same duration. In some implementations, each subframe of a frame may have the same duration.Attorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT11
[0041] Additionally or alternatively, a time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to slots. For example, a subframe may include a number (e.g., quantity) of slots. The number of slots in each subframe may also depend on the one or more numerologies supported in the wireless communications system 100. For instance, the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth numerologies (i.e., / r=0, / =l , / r=2, / r=3, / r=4) associated with respective subcarrier spacings of 15 kHz, 30 kHz, 60 kHz, 120 kHz, and 240 kHz may utilize a single slot per subframe, two slots per subframe, four slots per subframe, eight slots per subframe, and 16 slots per subframe, respectively. Each slot may include a number (e.g., quantity) of symbols (e.g., OFDM symbols). In some implementations, the number (e.g., quantity) of slots for a subframe may depend on a numerology. For a normal cyclic prefix, a slot may include 14 symbols. For an extended cyclic prefix (e.g., applicable for 60 kHz subcarrier spacing), a slot may include 12 symbols. The relationship between the number of symbols per slot, the number of slots per subframe, and the number of slots per frame for a normal cyclic prefix and an extended cyclic prefix may depend on a numerology. It should be understood that reference to a first numerology (e.g., / r=0) associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may be used interchangeably between subframes and slots.
[0042] In the wireless communications system 100, an electromagnetic (EM) spectrum may be split, based on frequency or wavelength, into various classes, frequency bands, frequency channels, etc. By way of example, the wireless communications system 100 may support one or multiple operating frequency bands, such as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz - 7.125 GHz), FR2 (24.25 GHz - 52.6 GHz), FR3 (7.125 GHz - 24.25 GHz), FR4 (52.6 GHz - 114.25 GHz), FR4a or FR4-1 (52.6 GHz - 71 GHz), and FR5 (114.25 GHz - 300 GHz). In some implementations, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may perform wireless communications over one or more of the operating frequency bands. In some implementations, FR1 may be used by the NEs 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for cellular communications traffic (e.g., control information, data). In some implementations, FR2 may be used by the NEs 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for short-range, high data rate capabilities.
[0043] FR1 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least three numerologies). For example, FR1 may be associated with a first numerology (e.g., / r=0), which includes 15 kHz subcarrier spacing; a second numerology (e.g., / r=l), which includes 30 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a third numerology (e.g., / r=2), which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing.Attorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT12FR2 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least 2 numerologies). For example, FR2 may be associated with a third numerology (e.g., / r=2), which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a fourth numerology (e.g., / r=3), which includes 120 kHz subcarrier spacing.
[0044] In some examples, the wireless communications system 100 includes one or more devices (e.g., NEs 102 and UEs 104) that adversely contribute to the climate due to an energy consumption of the devices. A volume of data traffic exchanged between the devices in the wireless communications systems (e.g., including the wireless communications system 100) may increase as more devices enter the wireless communications systems, which increases the energy consumption of the devices. Further, services with relatively high data rates may increase in popularity (e.g., extended reality (XR) services), which also increases the energy consumption of the devices. In some cases, a relatively high percentage of the energy consumption (e.g., a majority, greater than a threshold value) may come from one or more components of a RAN, including an active antenna unit (AAU), with data centers and fiber transport accounting for a smaller percentage. The power consumption of a RAN may be split into a dynamic part, which is consumed when data transmission and / or reception is ongoing, and a static part, which is consumed to maintain the operation of devices even when the data transmission and / or reception is not ongoing.
[0045] Therefore, the wireless communications system 100 may implement energy saving techniques (e.g., using key performance indicators (KPIs) or other evaluation methodology). For example, the wireless communications system 100 may implement dynamic and / or semi-static transmission techniques for a finer granularity adaptation of transmissions and / or receptions in time, frequency, spatial, and / or power domains, with potential support and / or feedback from UE, potential UE assistance information, and information exchange and / or coordination over network interfaces. The KPIs may include, but are not limited to, spectral efficiency, capacity, user perceived throughput (UPT), latency, UE power consumption, complexity, handover performance, call drop rate, initial access performance, and service level agreement (SLA) assurance related KPIs, among other examples.
[0046] In some examples, the devices in the wireless communications system 100 may expend energy to transmit SSBs and physical broadcast channels (PBCHs) (e.g., a PBCH including a master information block (MIB), SIB 1 (SIB 1), other SI, and paging information). The SIBs (e.g., apartAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT13 from SIB1) may be provided on demand. A NE 102 may transmit one or more SSBs and / or SIB1 messages to a UE 104 to facilitate initial cell search, radio resource management (RRM) measurements, and mobility procedures. An SSB may include a primary synchronization signal (PSS), a secondary synchronization signal (SSS), and a physical broadcast channel (PBCH). The PSS and SSS enable UEs 104 to achieve time and frequency synchronization with a network and to identify a cell. The PBCH carries SI, including a MIB, which includes parameters, such as the system frame number (SFN), subcarrier spacing, and initial downlink bandwidth part (BWP) configuration. SSBs include reference signals for channel estimation and beam management. The NE 102 may transmit SSBs periodically. The configuration of SSBs, including a periodicity and number of SSBs, can impact network energy consumption and overall system performance.
[0047] In some examples, SSBs provide a timing reference for POs, where a PO is a time interval during which a UE 104 monitors for a paging message. For example, a UE 104 may use a timing of an SSB to determine when to monitor for paging messages. A paging message includes information to notify a UE 104 of an incoming transmission (e.g., incoming calls, data, or SI updates). A NE 102 may transmit a paging message in a PDSCH scheduled by control signaling received via a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) scrambled by a paging-RNTI (P-RNTI). The paging message may include, but is not limited to, a UE identity, a cause for paging (e.g., a transmission type), and any other relevant information. When the UE 104 is not monitoring for a paging message, the UE may implement discontinuous reception (DRX) to enter a mode with reduced power consumption (e.g., an idle or inactive mode). Similarly, when a NE 102 is not transmitting paging messages or other transmissions, then the NE 102 may enter an idle or inactive mode.
[0048] In some examples, a NE 102 may transmit paging messages during PO and paging frames (PFs) spread evenly across time. For example, a UE 104 may monitor one PO per DRX cycle, which may include an idle or inactive mode duration and an active mode duration. A PO may be a set of PDCCH monitoring occasions and may include multiple time slots (e.g., subframe or OFDM symbol) during which a NE 102 may transmit a paging DCI (also referred to as a paging DO message). A PF may include a one or more radio frames and may include one or more POs or a starting point of a PO. In multi-beam operations, a same paging message and a same short message are repeated for multiple beams. The UE 104 may select a beam for reception of the pagingAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT14 message and the short message. The paging message may be the same for both RAN initiated paging and CN 106 initiated paging.
[0049] The UE 104 may initiate an RRC connection resume procedure upon receiving a RAN initiated paging message. If the UE 104 receives a CN 106 initiated paging in an inactive mode, then the UE 104 moves to an idle mode and informs a non-access stratum (NAS) of the transition from the inactive mode to the idle mode. The NE 102 and / or the UE 104 may determine a PF and PO for paging messages based on an SFN according to Equation 1 :(SFN + PFo^seLmod(T) = (TdivN) * UEIDmod(Nf (1)N is a number of total paging frames in T, where T is a DRX cycle of a UE 104. PF0^setis an offset in the time domain used for PF determination. The parameter UEIDis a function of 5G S- temporary mobile subscriber identity (5G-S-TMSI). For example, if the UE 104 operates in extended DRX (eDRX), then the UEIDis 5G-S-TMSI mod(4096), otherwise the UEIDis 5G-S- TMSI mod(1024) . If the UE 104 has no 5G-S-TMSI, for example when the UE 104 is not registered to the network, then the UE 104 may use a UEIDof zero as a default identity in Equation 1 and Equation 2. In some cases, 5G-S-TMSI is a 48 bit long bit string. 5G-S-TMSI may be interpreted as a binary number where the left most bit represents the most significant bit.
[0050] The NE 102 and / or the UE 104 may determine an index, is, of the PO according to Equation 2:Nsis a number of POs for a PF.
[0051] The NE 102 and / or the UE 104 may determine a PDCCH monitoring occasions for a paging message according to one or more configured parameters. For example, a NE 102 may configure a value of a pagingSearchSpace parameter, afirstPDCCH-MonitoringOccasionOfPO parameter, and a nrofPDCCH-MonitoringOccasionPerSSB-InPO parameter. If the NE 102 configures a value of a SearchSpaceld parameter to be zero for a defined pagingSearchSpace, then the PDCCH monitoring occasions for a paging message may be the same as for remaining minimum SI (RMSI). If the NE 102 configures a value of a SearchSpaceld parameter to be zero forAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT15 a defined pagingSearchSpace, then Nsmay be a defined value, such as either one or two. If Nshas a value of one, then there is one PO that starts from the first PDCCH monitoring occasion for a paging message in a PF. If Nshas a value of two, then a PO is either in a first half frame (e.g., is= 0) or a second half frame (e.g., is= 1) of a PF.
[0052] If SearchSpaceld has a value other than zero for a defined pagingSearchSpace, then the UE 104 monitors an (i^+l)111PO. A PO is a set of S * X consecutive PDCCH monitoring occasions, where S is a number of transmitted SSBs determined according to ssb-PositionsInBurst in SIB1 and X is a nrofPDCCH-MonitoringOccasionPerSSB-InPO if configured or is equal to one otherwise. The (x * S + K PDCCH monitoring occasion for a paging message in the PO corresponds to the K' transmitted SSB, where x = 0,1, ..., X — 1 and K = 1,2, ..., S. The PDCCH monitoring occasions for a paging message that do not overlap with uplink symbols (e.g., determined according to tdd-UL-DL-ConfigurationCommon) are sequentially numbered from zero starting from the first PDCCH monitoring occasion for a paging message in the PF. If a parameter firstPDCCH- MonitoringOccasionOfPO is configured, then a starting PDCCH monitoring occasion number of (is+ 1 )thPO is the (is+ 1 )thvalue of ihefirstPDCCH-MonitoringOccasionOfPO parameter.Otherwise, the starting PDCCH monitoring occasion is equal to is* S * X. If X is greater than one and the UE 104 detects a PDCCH transmission addressed to a P-RNTI within a PO, then the UE 104 may not monitor a subsequent PDCCH monitoring occasions for the PO.
[0053] In some cases, a PO associated with a PF may start in the PF or after the PF. Additionally, or alternatively, a PDCCH monitoring occasions for a PO may span multiple radio frames. If a value of a SearchSpaceld parameter is a value other than zero for a pagingSearchSpace, then the PDCCH monitoring occasions for a PO may span multiple periods of the paging search space. In some examples, the NE 102 and / or the UE 104 may use one or more parameters to calculate a PF.
[0054] The parameters may include a DRX cycle of a UE, T. If the UE 104 does not operate in eDRX, T is determined by the shortest DRX value of UE specific DRX values. The DRX values may be configured via RRC signaling and / or by upper layers, provided in PC5 RRC signaling (e.g., if a layer 2 (L2) UE-to-network (U2N) relay UE 104), or via SI (e.g., a default DRX value broadcast in SI). The UE 104 may apply a default value for a DRX cycle if the UE is in an idleAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT16 mode and if a UE specific DRX is not configured by upper layers. If the UE is in an idle mode, the UE 104 operates in eDRX, and eDRX is configured by upper layers (e.g., a value of TeDRX CNis configured), then the DRX cycle, T, TeDRX CN(e.g., if TeDRX CNis no longer than 1024 radio frames). If TeDRX CNis longer than 1024 radio frames, then during a CN configured paging time window (PTW), T is the shortest UE specific DRX value, if configured by upper layers, and the default DRX value broadcast in SI. If the UE is in an inactive mode, the UE operates in eDRX, eDRX is configured by RRC signaling (e.g., TeDRX RAN) and / or upper layers, and both TeDRX CNand TeDRX.RAN are no longer than 1024 radio frames, then T = min {TeDRX RAN, TeDRX CN}. If TeDRX CNis no longer than 1024 radio frames and no TeDRX RANis configured or used, T is determined by the shortest of UE specific DRX value configured by RRC signaling and TeDRX CN. If TeDRX CNis longer than 1024 radio frames and if TeDRX RANis not configured or used, then during CN configured PTW, T is determined by the shortest of the UE specific DRX values (e.g., if configured by RRC and / or upper layers) and a default DRX value broadcast in SI. Outside the CN configured PTW, T is determined by the UE specific DRX value configured by RRC signaling. If TeDRX RANis no longer than 1024 radio frames, then during CN configured PTW, T is determined by the shortest of the UE specific DRX value (e.g., if configured by upper layers and TeDRX RAN), and a default DRX value broadcast in SI. Outside the CN configured PTW, T is determined by TeDRX RAN.
[0055] In some examples, the parameters Ns, nAndPagingFrameOffset, nrofPDCCH- MonitoringOccasionPerSSB-InPO, and the length of default DRX cycle are signaled in SIB1. The values of N and PF0^setare derived from the parameter nAndPagingFrameOffset. The parameter firstPDCCH-MonitoringOccasionOfPO is signaled in SIB 1 for paging in the BWP configured by initialDownlinkBWP. For paging in a downlink BWP other than the BWP configured by initialDownlinkBWP, the ^wamet&xfirst-PDCCH-MonitoringOccasionOfPO is signaled in the corresponding BWP configuration. If the UE 104 is in an inactive mode, the UE 104 supports inactiveStatePO-Determination, and the NE 102 broadcasts ranPaginglnldlePO with value of true, then the UE 104 may use a same isas for an idle mode. Otherwise, the UE 104 may determine isbased on Equation 2. If the UE 104 is in an inactive mode and an eDRX value configured by upper layers is no longer than 1024 radio frames, then the UE 104 may use a same isas for the idle mode. If the UE 104 is in an inactive mode and an eDRX value configured by upper layers is longer thanAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT171024 radio frames, then during a CN PTW the UE 104 may use a same isas for the idle mode. Outside a CN PTW, the UE 104 may use the isfor the inactive mode.
[0056] In some examples, the UE 104 and the NE 102 may implement less occasional PFs by extending the values of N to have an increased interval between PFs (e.g., 7764, 77128 ...) and compensating a decrease in a number of PFs by increasing POs per PF. However decreasing a number of PFs by increasing POs per PF may result in a same number of transmissions from the NE 102, since the number of total POs remains the same, leading to almost the same energy consumed. A NE 102 may be unable to enter an idle or inactive mode (e.g., sleep modes), as the NE 102 sends paging messages periodically. The NE 102 transmits paging messages even if the paged UEs 104 are not in the coverage area of the NE 102, as the location of UEs 104 in an idle mode is known at a registration level (e.g., one or more tracking areas received in a registration accept message). Energy consumption from frequent periodic paging message transmissions may be unnecessary, especially if few (e.g., or none) of the UEs 104 being paged are actually present in a coverage area of a NE 102 intending to save energy. In some examples, a UE 104 and a NE 102 may implement one or more methods that enable energy saving by minimizing paging transmissions.
[0057] In some examples, to reduce power consumption at a NE 102 and / or a UE 104 for transmitting and receiving paging messages, a NE 102 may configure (e.g., preconfigure or otherwise define) time and frequency resources allocated for paging messages. For example, the NE 102 may indicate the resources in a SIB1 and / or the resources may be defined (e.g., preconfigured, coded) at the UE 104. The NE 102 may transmit control signaling, such as a paging DCI, to a UE 104 that includes a bitmap indicating whether the UE 104 is to receive a paging message in the configured time and frequency resources. For example, the bitmap may include a first set of bits that indicates different subgroups of UEs 104 and a second set of bits that indicates UE identifiers for UEs 104 in subgroups with UEs 104 that are to receive a paging message. If the paging message is intended for the UE 104, then a bit value of the bit for the subgroup including the UE 104 may have a value of one and a bit value of the bit for the UE identifier (e.g., or a group of UE identifiers including the UE identifier) may also have a value of one. The UE 104 may monitor for the paging message in the configured time and frequency resources, which reduces the number of paging messages to UEs 104 that are not intended UEs 104.Attorney Ref. [0059] Figure 2 illustrates an example transmission diagram 200 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the transmission diagram 200 implements or is implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100. The transmission diagram 200 may be implemented by a UE or a NE, which may be examples of a UE 104, and a NE 102 as described with reference to Figure 1. For example, a NE may transmit paging messages during one or more POs 202.
[0060] In some examples, a NE may periodically transmit paging messages during configured time and frequency resources. For example, the NE may transmit paging messages to UEs in POs 202 within a PF 204. Although the transmission diagram 200 illustrates an example of four POs 202, a PF 204 may include any numerical quantity of POs 202. Additionally, or alternatively, although the transmission diagram 200 illustrates an example of POs 202 within a single PF 204, the POs 202 may span any numerical quantity of PFs 204.
[0061] In some cases, a PO 202 may span a slot 206, while a PF 204 may span a frame 208 (e.g., a radio frame). A slot 206 and a frame 208 are units in the time domain. For example, a slot 206 includes of a fixed number of OFDM symbols. The duration of a slot 206 may depend on the subcarrier spacing used for communications. For example, with 15 kHz subcarrier spacing, a slot 206 is 1 millisecond (ms) long and includes 14 OFDM symbols. As the subcarrier spacing increases, the slot duration decreases proportionally. Slots 206 are used for scheduling transmissions and receptions, allowing for flexible and efficient resource allocation. A frame 208 includes multiple slots 206. A frame 208 may have a fixed duration (e.g., 10 ms), regardless of the subcarrier spacing. The number of slots 206 within a frame 208 varies based on the subcarrier spacing. For example, with 15 kHz subcarrier spacing, a frame 208 includes 10 slots 206, while with 30 kHz subcarrier spacing, a frame 208 includes 20 slots 206. Frames 208 provide a consistent time reference for various network operations, including synchronization, paging, and SI broadcasting. The transmission diagram 200 illustrates an example of PFs 204 and corresponding POs 202 when N is configured to 774, and Nsis configured with a value of four.Attorney Ref. [0062] Conventional techniques for transmitting paging messages include periodic paging messages. However, periodically transmitting paging messages may lead to inefficiencies, including an increased power consumption and signaling overhead at a UE and a NE. For example, if a relatively small numerical quantity of UEs are to be paged (e.g., a few UEs), a NE may still enter an active mode (e.g., wake up) to transmit paging messages according to the periodicity if the UEs to be paged are monitoring for the paging messages during different POs 202 and / or PFs 204. Further, the NE may wake up to send paging messages even if the paged UEs are not in a coverage area of the NE. The NE may not know the location of UEs within a paging tracking area when they are in an idle mode, so NEs within the paging tracking area broadcast paging messages regardless of whether there is a UE that may respond to the paging message. For example, if N is set to 774, then a NE may transmit paging every four frames 208.
[0063] In some examples, the NE may support a same paging transmission density by consolidating the POs 202 to consecutive slots or frames 208, such that the NE does not wake up as frequently. Additionally, or alternatively, instead of multiplexing the paging messages in a time domain, the NE may multiplex the paging messages in a frequency domain or in both the frequency and time domain using a same number of new P-RNTIs. The POs 202 multiplexed in the time domain and in the frequency domain and corresponding DCIs can be categorized in different types, including first stage and a second stage POs 202 and DCIs. Each of the first stage POs and / or DCIs multiplexed in the frequency domain with a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is scrambled by a corresponding firstStage-P-RNTI-f [f = 1... max^J and carries PDSCH resource information.
[0064] The DCI may be a DCI format l_0 with CRC scrambled by P-RNTI. For example, the DO may include a short message indicator, a short message, a frequency domain resource assignment, a time domain resource assignment, a virtual resource block (VRB)-to-physical resource block (PRB) mapping, a modulation and coding scheme (MCS), a transport block (TB) scaling, a tracking reference signal (TRS) availability indication, and reserved bits. The DCI may include any numerical quantity of bits, such as 36 bits. The DCI may also include an integer value that indicates a last bitmap that has a paging record for a UE included in the RRC paging messages scheduled by the PDSCH resources signaled in the same first stage DCI. Subsequent first stage POs may not repeat contents of the previous first stage PO (e.g., short messages indicator, short messages, and TRS availability indication). The bits may be used to indicate a bitmap, as describedAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT20 in further reference to Figures 3 through 5, or a paging early indication (PEI) subgroup identifier. A UE may use a PEI in an idle and / or inactive mode to reduce power consumption.
[0065] If a PEI configuration is provided in SI, then the UE can monitor the PEI using PEI parameters in SI. The UE monitors one PEI occasion per DRX cycle. A PEI occasion (PEI-O) is a set of PDCCH monitoring occasions and can include multiple time slots (e.g., subframes or OFDM symbols) during which a PEI may be sent. In multi-beam operations, the UE may select a beam for reception of a PEI, as a same PEI is repeated in transmitted beams. A UE may determine a time location of PEI-0 for a PO using a reference point and an offset. The reference point is the start of a reference frame determined by a frame-level offset from the start of the first PF of the PFs associated with the PEI-O, provided by a pei-FrameOffset parameter in SIB1. The offset is a symbol-level offset from the reference point to the start of the first PDCCH monitoring occasion of a PEI-O, provided by afirstPDCCH-MonitoringOccasionOfPEI-O parameter in SIB1. If one PEI-O is associated with POs of two PFs, then the two PFs are consecutive PFs calculated by the parameters PF0^set, T, Ns, and N. The first PF of the PFs associated with the PEI-O is calculated by the UE and / or the NE. The PDCCH monitoring occasions for a PEI are determined according to parameters, including, but not limited to, pei-SearchSpace, pei-FrameOffset, firstPDCCH- MonitoringOccasionOfPEI-O , and nrofPDCCH-MonitoringOccasionPerSSB-InPO.
[0066] If SearchSpaceld has a value of zero for a pei-SearchSpace, then the PDCCH monitoring occasions for PEI are same as for RMSI. A UE determines first PDCCH monitoring occasion for PEI-O based on pei-FrameOffset widfirstPDCCH-MonitoringOccasionOfPEI-O, as for the case with SearchSpaceld being greater than zero. If SearchSpaceld has a value of zero for a pei-SearchSpace, then the UE monitors the PEI-O according to searchSpaceZero. If SearchSpaceld other than zero is configured for the pei-SearchSpace, then the UE monitors the PEI-O according to the search space with the configured SearchSpaceld.
[0067] A PEI occasion is a set of S * X consecutive PDCCH monitoring occasions, where S is the number of transmitted SSBs determined according to ssb-PositionsInBurst in SIB1, and X is the nrofPDCCH-MonitoringOccasionPerSSB-InPO if configured or is equal to one otherwise. The (x * S + K)'hPDCCH monitoring occasion for PEI in the PEI-O corresponds to the K'htransmitted SSB, where x = 0,1, ... , X — 1 and K = 1,2, ... , S. The PDCCH monitoring occasions for PEI that do notAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT21 overlap with uplink symbols (e.g., determined according to tdd-UL-DL-ConfigurationCommon) are sequentially numbered from zero starting from the first PDCCH monitoring occasion for PEI in the PEI-O. If the UE detects a PEI within its PEI-O, then the UE does not monitor the subsequent monitoring occasions associated with the same PEI-O.
[0068] If the UE detects a PEI and the PEI indicates the subgroup the UE belongs to monitor an associated PO, then the UE monitors the associated PO. If the UE does not detect PEI on the monitored PEI occasion or the PEI does not indicate the subgroup the UE belongs to monitor an associated PO, then the UE does not monitor the associated PO. If the UE is unable to monitor the PEI occasion (e.g., the valid PDCCH monitoring occasion for a PEI) corresponding to a PO, including during cell reselection, then the UE monitors the associated PO.
[0069] If a PEI and subgrouping are configured, UEs monitoring the same PO can be divided into one or more subgroups. With subgrouping, the UE monitors the associated PO if the corresponding bit for a subgroup the UE belongs to is indicated as one by a PEI corresponding to the PO. The UE may use one or more parameters to determine a subgroup identifier, including, but not limited to a subgroupsNumPerPO (e.g., total number of subgroups for both CN assigned subgrouping and UEIDbased subgrouping in a PO, which is broadcasted in SI) and a subgroupsNumForUEID (e.g., a number of subgroups for UEIDbased subgrouping in a PO, which is broadcasted in SI). A subgroup of a UE can either be assigned by a CN or formed based on UEID. If subgroupsNumForUEID is absent in subgroupConfig, then the subgroup identifier is based on CN assigned subgrouping, if available for the UE. If both subgroupsNumPerPO and subgroupsNumForUEID are configured, and subgroupsNumForUEID has the same value as subgroupsNumPerPO, then the subgroup identifier is based on U EIDbased subgrouping. If both subgroupsNumPerPO and subgroupsNumForUEID are configured, and subgroupsNumForUEID is less than subgroupsNumPerPO, then the subgroup identifier is based on CN assigned subgrouping, if available for the UE. Otherwise, the subgroup identifier is based on an identifier of a UE, UEID.
[0070] A UE supporting CN assigned subgrouping in an idle or inactive mode can be assigned a subgroup identifier (e.g., between 0 to 7) by an access management function (AMF) through NAS signaling. The UE belonging to the assigned subgroup identifier monitors an associated PEI, which indicates the paged subgroups. If the UE is not configured with a CN assigned subgroup identifier, or if the UE configured with a CN assigned subgroup identifier that is served by a NE supportingAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT22UEIDbased subgrouping, then the subgroup identifier (e.g., SubgroupID) of the UE is determined according to Equation 3:subgroupsNumForUEIDf (3)N is a number of total paging frames in T, which is the DRX cycle of an idle mode UE. Nsis a number of POs for a PF. The UEIDis 5G-S-TMSI mod (X), where X is 32768, if eDRX is applied or 8192 otherwise. subgroupsNumForUEID is a number of subgroups for UEIDbased subgrouping in a PO, which is broadcasted in SI. In an inactive mode with a CN configured PTW, the SubgroupID used outside the CN PTW is the same as the SubgroupID used inside CN PTW. A UE belonging to the SubgroupID monitors an associated PEI, which indicates the paged subgroups.
[0071] In some cases, remaining transmitted POs are second stage POs signaling a corresponding second stage DCI. Each of the second stage DCIs are multiplexed in the frequency domain with CRC scrambled by a corresponding secondStage-P-RNTI-s [f = 1...maxsJ. Each of the transmitted second stage DCI carries a bitmap of length, B bits, where B = 1024 / (maxs* Nnew), as shown in Table 1. Nnewis a total number of paging places in a new paging cycle. The new paging cycle is a default paging cycle and may not depend on the UE specific paging cycles.Table 1: Examples of bitmap length, number of P-RNTIs, and Nnew
[0072] Both DCI types (e.g., first stage DCI and second stage DCI) include one bit to indicate if the DCI is first or second stage DCI. A UE may determine a secondStage-P-RNTI to monitor by calculating U EIDmod(maxs), according to Table 2.Attorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT23Table 2: Example secondStage-P-RNTI for DCI
[0073] In some cases, UEs receive and store the contents of an initial first stage DCI, including the information that may not be repeated in the next first stage DCIs. Based on the LastBITMAP information present in the first stage DCI, the UE determines which first stage DCI has PDSCH information. If the value of LastBITMAP is Layer 1 (LI) in the initial first stage DCI, then the corresponding PDSCH carries information forwith a value of one to LI. Similarly, if the value of LastBITMAP is L2 in the next first stage DCI then the corresponding PDSCH carries information for L 1+1 to L2. The UE then determines the first stage DCI relevant for the UE, such that Lxis less than or equal tois less than or equal to Ly(e.g., Lx< B^ < Ly). The UEXreceives second stage DCI corresponding to a determined secondStage-P-RNTI-x, and if the DCI is received then UEXdetermines if a bit position, b, in the BITMAP of length B bits included in the second stage DCI is set to true. If so, the UEXutilizes the PDSCH resource information in the first stage DCI to receive a paging message (e.g., an RRC paging message). To determine b in the bitmap of length B bits, the UEXuses an identification (ID) or identifier of the UE (e.g., a UE ID, where b = UEIDmodB + 1). The UEIDis 5G-S-TMSI mod 4096 if the UE operates in eDRX or 5G-S-TMSI mod 1024 otherwise.
[0074] A UE determines if a paging record is included in the paging message. If so, the UE concludes that the UE has been paged and forwards the paging message to an upper layer of a protocol stack associated with the UE (e.g., a NAS layer). In some cases, there is a single UE at the bit position b in the bitmap of length B bits. However, more than one UE may monitor a same bit (e.g., according to a parameter UEper-bit), which provides for reduction in the length of the bitmap B bits and / or a number of reserved secondStage-P-RNTI (e.g., maxsi. For example, UEper-bit * number of new POs.Attorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT24
[0075] A NE may transmit any numerical quantity (e.g., including zero) of first stage DCIs and any numerical quantity of second stage DCIs depending on how many UEs are to be paged. The NE may transmit the first and second stage DCIs at a defined time period (e.g., new POs), which may include a total of NewP0NUMtimes. For example the time period may include a fixed time period repeated according to a cycle, T (e.g., a new default paging cycle), where the first fixed time period is defined using a fixed frame, subframe, and / or slot offset. A UE and / or NE may determine a PF 204 and PO 202 for a paging message using Equation 1, where the UEIDis a fixed value (e.g., zero). The parameters PF0^set, T, and N may either be fixed or configured in SI. In some cases, a CORESET search space configuration to receive new DCIs can be specified or configured in SI. Implementing multiple stages of DCI and multiplexing POs 202 and / or the DCIs in both time and frequency domains reduces a number of paging message (e.g., PDSCH) transmissions, which provides for a NE and a UE to sleep (e.g., enter an inactive or idle mode) for longer.
[0076] In some examples, a number of UEs that are to be paged in one PO 202 may be unknown. Thus, the NE and / or UE may use the DCI (e.g., via a PDCCH) to enable flexible resources for paging message transmission and reception (e.g., PDSCH). However, there may be a relatively small number of UEs that are paged in each PO 202 (e.g., less than a threshold value, two UEs). Thus, a NE may semi-statically serve up to a threshold number of UEs in a PO 202. The NE may determine a value of the threshold number of UEs, or the value may be preconfigured or otherwise defined. A conservative higher value of the threshold number of UEs may result in inefficient resource usage, while a lower value of the threshold number of UEs may result in a NE being unable to page more than the threshold number of UEs in a same PO (e.g., increasing the paging latency by one or more cycles for remaining UEs). In some examples, the NE may configure one PO 202 per paging DRX cycle (e.g., T) where a number of total paging frames in T (e.g., N) is equal to T, and a number of POs for a PF (e.g., Ns) is one. If the number of UEs to be paged increases over a relatively short time period, a NE may reduce a paging DRX cycle length (e.g., from 1.28 seconds to 0.32 seconds) or may configure an additional PO 202 in the paging DRX cycle, the additional PO 202 being at a known offset from the first PO 202.
[0077] The capacity utilization (e.g., a total number of paging records that could be sent with a paging configuration) is less than 1% in observed cases. An average number of paging records in one RRC message (e.g., when paging is sent) is close to two. A real average accounting ofAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT25 configured POs is less. A maximum number of records included in a same paging message is less than 32. Thus, conventional paging configurations are over dimensioned (e.g., including too many paging records). To improve power consumption and resource utilization at a NE and a UE, the NE and the UE may implement a paging scheme that balances energy consumption without increasing a false alarm rate and paging latency. False alarm rate for paging refers to the proportion of times a UE unnecessarily wakes up to check for paging messages when the UE is not actually being paged. The false alarm rate can be calculated as the ratio of the number of times a UE checks for paging without finding a relevant paging message to the total number of paging checks, and a high false alarm rate can lead to increased power consumption for UEs.
[0078] In some examples, a paging DCI is used to indicate a paging message when at least one UE is paged. The paging DCI is scrambled with a firstStage-P-RNTI that may be common to a subgroup of UEs or to the UEs monitoring paging. The paging DCI may include a bitmap of a defined size (e.g., 32 bits). Each bit represents one or more UEs, as described in further detail with respect to Figures 3 through 5. The UEs that are paged (e.g., UEs with bits in the bitmap that are set to a defined value) may attempt to receive a paging message in PDSCH resources. Some or an entirety of the resources (e.g., time resources and / or frequency resources) may be preconfigured at the UE. A NE may transmit control signaling, such as a SIB 1 message, that includes a resource configuration that defines the resources. Additionally, or alternatively, the resources may be defined at the UE independent of the NE (e.g., coded, or otherwise defined). If the entirety of the resources are not preconfigured (e.g., in the resource configuration) or otherwise defined, then the NE may transmit additional control signaling that indicates the remaining resources. The additional control signaling may be an example of a DCI.
[0079] For example, the resource configuration may indicate a starting resource of a PDSCH transmission that includes a paging message. The starting resource may be a resource in the frequency domain, which may have a preconfigured or defined offset from an SSB, the overall RB grid, and / or from resources used for a paging DCI transmission. An RB grid may refer to a time and frequency structure that organizes radio resources for transmission and reception in a wireless communication system. An RB grid may include a set of RBs, where each RB represents the smallest unit of resources that can be allocated to a UE (e.g., a defined numerical quantity of subcarriers in a frequency domain and a defined numerical quantity of symbols in a time domain).Attorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT26The offset may be measured in a number of subcarriers (e.g., a subcarrier offset). The NE may transmit a resource configuration in a SIB 1 or other semi-static control signaling that includes a number of PRBs, slots, and / or symbols allocated for a paging message. Additionally, or alternatively, the NE may transmit the resource configuration in a paging DCI that includes a number of PRBs, slots, and / or symbol (e.g., using two or three bits). In some cases, the control signaling (e.g., the DCI a, the SIB1, or other control signaling) carrying the resource configuration may include at least one code point, where a code point may indicate a resource configuration for the paging message. For example, if there are four different preconfigured or defined resource configurations, the control signaling may include two bits, where each variation of values for the two bits (e.g., 00, 01, 10, 11) represents a different resource configuration. Additionally, or alternatively, a paging DCI can be scrambled using more than one firstStage-P-RNTI, each firstStage-P-RNTI corresponding to a number of PRBs, slots, and / or symbols.
[0080] A number of RBs can be fixed or can be variable. If the number of RBs is variable, then the NE may transmit control signaling (e.g., SIB1, paging DCI, or other semi static control signaling, among other control signaling) that indicates the number of RBs, where each code point may indicate a defined value. Additionally, or alternatively, a paging DCI can be scrambled using more than one firstStage-P-RNTI, each firstStage-P-RNTI corresponding to a number of RBs. The NE may also indicate a VRB-to-PRB mapping, an MCS, a TB scaling, and a TRS availability indication in the control signaling (e.g., one or more of a SIB1, paging DCI, or other semi static control signaling, among other control signaling).
[0081] Figure 3 illustrates an example bitmap 300 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the bitmap 300 implements or is implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100 and the transmission diagram 200. The bitmap 300 may be implemented by a UE or a NE, which may be examples of a UE 104, and a NE 102 as described with reference to Figure 1. For example, a NE may transmit a paging DCI that includes the bitmap 300.
[0082] In some examples, the bitmap 300 may illustrate a portion of a bitmap included in a paging DCI or in any other control signaling. For example, the bitmap 300 may illustrate the first portion of bits in a bitmap (e.g., the first 8 bits of a 32 bit bitmap). The bitmap may be any numerical quantity of bits, and the first portion of bits may include any numerical quantity of bits inAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT27 the bitmap. The bitmap may be included in a first stage DCI, as described with reference to Figure 2, or in a DCI scrambled with a secondStage-P-RNTI that may be common to a subgroup of UEs or to UEs monitoring for paging messages. If the bitmap includes 32 bits, then the first portion of bits may include 8 bits and a second portion of bits may include 24 bits.
[0083] The first portion of bits represents respective subgroups of UEs. For example, 8 bits divide the UEIDspace of 1024 into 8 parts (e.g., 8 first subgroups of UEIDS(FiSUs) including 128 UEIDseach, as shown in Figure 3). The FiSU-1 through FiSU-8 are each represented by a bit in the first portion of bits. A NE may set a value of respective bits in the first portion of bits to a value of zero or a value of one, where a value of one indicates that the corresponding subgroup of UEs includes at least one UE that is to receive a paging message and a value of zero indicates that the corresponding subgroup of UEs does not include a UE that is to receive a paging message. That is, if a UE with a UEIDbetween 0 and 127 is paged, then the first of the 8 bits is set to a value of one, if a UE with UE' / Dbetween 128 and 255 is paged, then the second of the 8 bits is set to a value of one (e.g., as illustrated in the bitmap 300), and so on.
[0084] In some cases, the second portion of bits (e.g., the 24 remaining bits for a 32 bit bitmap) represents respective UEs in the subgroup of UEs with a UE that is paged. For example, if one bit (e.g., the second bit) has a value of one, referred to as a bit being set (e.g., 01000000), then the second portion of bits in the bitmap may represent UEs in the addressed FiSU (e.g., FiSU-2). For example, a first bit from the left in the second portion of bits represents the 1stto 5thUEIDof the FiSU-2, the second bit from the left in the second portion of bits represents the 6thto 10thUEIDof the FiSU-2, and so on, until the 24thbit from the left in the second portion of bits (e.g., the last bit in the bitmap) represents the 1022ndto the 1028thUEIDof the FiSU-2. Thus, a false alarm rate (e.g., a number of FiSUs being arranged into each of the 32 bits) is lower than the case where the 32 bits are to equally represent the 1028 UEIDs(e.g., 32 UEIDsfor each bit). The breakup of a 32 bit bitmap into 8 bits in a first portion of bits and 24 bits in a second portion of bits is an example and other combinations are possible.
[0085] Figure 4 illustrates an example bitmap 400 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the bitmap 400 implements or is implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100, the transmission diagram 200, and the bitmap 300. The bitmap 400 may be implemented by a UE or a NE, which may be examples of a UE 104, and a NEAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT28102 as described with reference to Figure 1. For example, a NE may transmit a paging DO that includes the bitmap 400.
[0086] In some examples, the bitmap 400 may illustrate a portion of a bitmap included in a paging DCI or in any other control signaling. For example, the bitmap 400 may illustrate the first portion of bits in a bitmap (e.g., the first 8 bits of a 32 bits bitmap). The bitmap may be any numerical quantity of bits, and the first portion of bits may include any numerical quantity of bits in the bitmap.
[0087] The first portion of bits represents respective subgroups of UEs. For example, 8 bits divide the UEIDspace of 1024 into 8 parts (e.g., 8 first subgroups of UEIDs(FiSUs) including 128 UEIDseach, as shown in Figure 4). That is, if a UE with a UEIDbetween 0 and 127 is paged, then the first of the 8 bits is set to a value of one, if a UE with UEIDbetween 128 and 255 is paged, then the second of the 8 bits is set to a value of one, and so on.
[0088] In some cases, the second portion of bits (e.g., the 24 remaining bits for a 32 bit bitmap) represents respective UEs in the subgroup of UEs with a UE that is paged. For example, if two bits (e.g., the third bit and the eighth bit) have a value of one, referred to as a bit being set (e.g., 00100001), then the second portion of bits in the bitmap may represent UEs in the addressed FiSUs (e.g., FiSU-3 and FiSU-8). Each of the two set bits of the first portion of bits of the bitmap address an equal number of bits of the second portion of bits. For example, if the total number of bits in the bitmap is 32 and the first portion of bits includes 8 bits, then 12 bits represent the UEs in the FiSU-3 and 12 bits represent the UEs in the FiSU-8. For example, the two sets of 12 bits of the second portion of the 32 bits bitmap represent corresponding groupings of the 128 UEIDsin the subgroups (e.g., FiSU-3 and FiSU-8).Attorney Ref. [0089] Figure 5 illustrates an example bitmap 500 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the bitmap 500 implements or is implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100, the transmission diagram 200, the bitmap 300, and the bitmap 400. The bitmap 500 may be implemented by a UE or a NE, which may be examples of a UE 104, and a NE 102 as described with reference to Figure 1. For example, a NE may transmit a paging DO that includes the bitmap 500.
[0090] In some examples, the bitmap 500 may illustrate a portion of a bitmap included in a paging DCI or in any other control signaling. For example, the bitmap 500 may illustrate the first portion of bits in a bitmap (e.g., the first 16 bits of a 32 bits bitmap). The bitmap may be any numerical quantity of bits, and the first portion of bits may include any numerical quantity of bits in the bitmap. The bitmap may be included in a first stage DCI, as described with reference to Figure 2, or in a DCI scrambled with a secondStage-P-RNTI that may be common to a subgroup of UEs or to UEs monitoring for paging messages. If the bitmap includes 32 bits, then the first portion of bits may include 16 bits and a second portion of bits may also include 16 bits.
[0091] The first portion of bits represents respective subgroups of UEs. For example, 16 bits divide the UEIDspace of 1024 into 16 parts (e.g., 16 first subgroups of UEIDS(FiSUs) including 64 UEIDSeach, as shown in Figure 4). The FiSU-1 through FiSU-16 are each represented by a bit in the first portion of bits. That is, if a UE with a UEIDbetween 0 and 63 is paged, then the first of the 16 bits is set to a value of one, if a UE with UEIDbetween 63 and 127 is paged, then the second of the 16 bits is set to a value of one, and so on.
[0092] In some cases, the second portion of bits (e.g., the 16 remaining bits for a 32 bits bitmap) represents respective UEs in the subgroup of UEs with a UE that is paged. For example, if a bit (e.g., the second bit) has a value of one, referred to as a bit being set (e.g., 0100000000000000), then the second portion of bits in the bitmap may represent UEs in the addressed FiSUs (e.g., FiSU- 2). Each of the set bits of the first portion of bits of the bitmap address an equal number of bits of the second portion of bits. For example, if the total number of bits in the bitmap is 32 and the firstAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT30 portion of bits includes 16 bits, then for one set bit 16 bits represent the UEs in a single FiSU (e.g., the FiSU-2, as illustrated in the bitmap 500). For two set bits, 8 bits represent the UEs in two FiSUs, and so on.
[0093] The NE may transmit control signaling (e.g., SI or other control signaling) configuring a length of the bits available in a DCI, a length of the first portion of bits, and / or a length of the second portion of bits. Additionally, or alternatively, a new DCI format may be introduced for a paging DCI with a defined length bitmap and / or defined length portions of a bitmap (e.g., a new DCI format with 32 bits used as 16 and 16 or a new DCI format with 48 bits used as 16 and 32, among other examples). The UE may be configured with a corresponding CORSET and search space for the paging DCI with a new RNTI.
[0094] A paging DCI may include information identifying UEs that are to be paged, such that UEs may determine if they are paged or not. UEs that are not paged may not monitor for and receive a PDSCH including the paging message. For example, a NE may include one or more digits (e.g., the last digits) of an MSISDN for the UEs that are to be paged. An MSISDN is a number that uniquely identifies a subscription in a mobile network. An MSISDN is a number associated with a single subscriber identity module (SIM) card or universal integrated circuit card (UICC) and is the number for calls or short message service (SMS) messages. Additionally, or alternatively, the information may include a temporary identifier allocated by the NE to the UE (e.g., a 5G-S-TMSI or a globally unique temporary identifier (GUTI)), or an inactive-RNTI (I-RNTI) for UEs in an inactive mode. The information can be a randomly generated identifier allocated to the UE for the purpose of paging disambiguation.
[0095] The NE may determine whether a numerical quantity of UEs to be paged in a PO satisfies (e.g., is less than) a threshold value prior to including the information in the paging DCI. In some cases, the NE includes a bitmap in the DCI that identifies the information of the UEs being paged. For example, the bitmap may include 10 digits and may correspond to an integer number (e.g., 0 ... 9). The NE may set bits of the bitmap belonging to the information of the UEs being paged.
[0096] Figure 6 illustrates an example transmission diagram 600 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the transmission diagram 600 implements or isAttorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT31 implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100, the transmission diagram 200, the bitmap 300, the bitmap 400, and the bitmap 500. The transmission diagram 600 may be implemented by a UE or a NE, which may be examples of a UE 104, and a NE 102 as described with reference to Figure 1. For example, a NE may transmit control signaling (e.g., a DCI) that indicates another DCI for scheduling a paging messages.
[0097] In some cases, a number of UEs to be paged exceeds a threshold value for which the NE is capable of scheduling paging for and / or transmitting paging messages to. In some examples, the NE may transmit a bitmap 602 that indicates respective UE subgroups and corresponding UEs within the subgroup that are to be paged, which may be an example of a bitmap as described with reference to Figures 2 through 5. In some examples, the NE may transmit the bitmap 602 via a PDCCH of a PDCCH-PDSCH pair (e.g., a DCI via the PDCCH-PDSCH 604-a). In some other examples, the NE may transmit the bitmap 602 in other control signaling (e.g., in an additional DCI or in other control signaling independent of the PDCCH-PDSCH pairs).
[0098] A paging DCI and / or a PDSCH scheduled by the paging DCI (e.g., the PDCCH-PDSCH 604-a) may include one bit with a Boolean value (e.g., zero or one) indicating that an additional paging DCI and / or paging message is to follow, such as the PDCCH-PDSCH 604-b. The physical resource and / or location of the additional paging DCI and / or Paging message (e.g., the PDCCH- PDSCH 605 -b) can be preconfigured or otherwise defined at the UE and can be at a fixed offset away from the occurrence of the PDCCH-PDSCH 604-a in a time and / or frequency domains. In some examples, a single paging DCI can allocate resources for more than one PDSCH and corresponding paging message.
[0099] Figure 7 illustrates an example transmission diagram 700 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the transmission diagram 700 implements or is implemented by aspects of the wireless communications system 100, the transmission diagram 200, the bitmap 300, the bitmap 400, the bitmap 500, and the transmission diagram 600. The transmission diagram 700 may be implemented by a UE or a NE, which may be examples of a UE 104, and a NE 102 as described with reference to Figure 1. For example, a NE may transmit control signaling (e.g., a DCI) that indicates a change in SI in control signaling that includes a bitmap for paging.Attorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT32
[0100] In some examples, a NE may include an indication of an SI change in a same message as a bitmap. The NE may transmit the bitmap and SI change 702 to a UE. The bitmap may be an example of the bitmap as described with reference to Figures 2 through 6. The NE may transmit the bitmap, and the SI change 702 in control signaling, such as a paging DCI. The bitmap and the SI change 702 may inform a UE of whether the NE is transmitting a paging message to inform UEs of the change in SI and / or to inform UEs receiving mobile terminating paging. The NE may include an indication (e.g., a one bit Boolean flag, or the first left bit of the bitmap) to signal if the remaining bitmap is to be interpreted for mobile terminated paging or for an SI change. If the SI change is indicated, then the remaining bits in the bitmap may indicate one or more SIBs or SI messages has been updated. For example, the bitmap and SI change 702 may indicate that one or more resources (e.g., resources in the time domain) allocated for a PDCCH-PDSCH 704-b are updated to resources allocated prior to the PDCCH-PDSCH 704-a. The UE may determine if the changed and / or updated SI is intended for the UE, such as by using the remaining bitmap, as described with reference to Figures 2 through 5. For example, if one or more bits in the bitmap representative of a subgroup of UEs including the UE and representative of a group of one or more UE identifiers that include the UE are set (e.g., to one), then the SI change may be intended for the UE. If the UE determines the change in SI is intended for the UE, then the UE initiates a corresponding SI acquisition procedure (e.g., by monitoring for SIBs or SI messages during one or more updated resources).
[0101] Figure 8 illustrates an example signaling diagram 800 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. In some examples, the signaling diagram 800 may implement aspects of the wireless communications system 100, the transmission diagram 200, the bitmap 300, the bitmap 400, the bitmap 500, the transmission diagram 600, and the transmission diagram 700. For example, the signaling diagram 800 may be implemented by a UE 104 or a NE 102, which may be examples of a UE 104, and a NE 102 as described with reference to Figure 1. For example, a NE 102 may transmit a resource configuration for paging messages and a bitmap to indicate one or more UEs for which the paging messages are intended. Alternative examples of the following may be implemented, where some processes are performed in a different order than described or are not performed. In some cases, processes may include additional features not mentioned below, or further processes may be added.Attorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT33
[0102] At 802, the NE 102 may communicate (transmit, signal, output) at least a portion of a resource configuration for one or more paging messages to a UE 104. For example, the NE 102 may transmit first signaling (e.g., a SIB or other semi-static control signaling) including the portion of the resource configuration for the paging messages. In some cases, the first signaling may include multiple resource configurations, and at least one resource configuration may be activated (e.g., selected, indicated) in second control signaling. In some other cases, one or more resource configuration may be preconfigured (e.g., coded) or otherwise defined at the UE 104. The portion of the resource configuration may indicate one or more additional resources for second signaling, and the UE 104 may monitor the one or more additional resources for the second signaling.
[0103] In some cases, the resource configuration may include a subcarrier offset from at least one of an SSB, an RB grid, or resources used for the second signaling that indicates a start of a resource including the paging message in a frequency domain. Additionally, or alternatively, the resource configuration may include a numerical quantity of time resources including the paging message. The numerical quantity of time resources may be configured according to an RNTI of the second signaling.
[0104] In some cases, at 804, the NE 102 may determine a numerical quantity of UEs in a coverage area of the NE 102 (e.g., a numerical quantity of UEs to be paged) satisfies a threshold value. In some examples, the NE may determine the threshold value according to a numerical quantity of bits available in control signaling (e.g., DCI) for indicating paging information to UEs.
[0105] For example, the NE 102 may determine a numerical quantity of UEs in a coverage area of the NE is less than a threshold value. If the numerical quantity of UEs is less than the threshold value, then the NE 102 may include one or more digits of an MSISDN of the UE 104 in second signaling. In some other examples, the NE 102 may determine a numerical quantity of UEs in a coverage area of the NE is greater than a threshold value. If the numerical quantity of UEs is greater than the threshold value, then the NE 102 may include a bit that indicates for the UE 104 to monitor for fourth signaling including information for the UE 104 to receive at least one paging message. In some cases, the resource configuration indicates one or more additional resources for the fourth signaling.Attorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT34
[0106] At 806, the NE 102 may communicate (transmit, signal, output) the second signaling, which includes a bitmap for paging messages. The first signaling may indicate a numerical quantity of bits in the bitmap. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE 104 may determine a numerical quantity of bits in the bitmap according to a format of the second signaling (e.g., a DCI format). For example, a first DCI format may correspond to a first numerical quantity of bits and a second DCI format may correspond to a second numerical quantity of bits.
[0107] In some cases, the bitmap includes a first set of bits and a second set of bits. The first set of bits indicates respective subgroups of UEs. For example, if the bitmap includes 32 bits, a first set of 8 bits may represent 8 different subgroups of UEs (e.g., respective FiSUs). The UEs may be UEs within a coverage area of the NE 102, and the subgroups may divide the UEs into equal groupings. The second set of bits may represent identifiers of respective UEs or respective groups of UEs within one or more of the subgroups. For example, for the 32 bit bitmap, if the first set of bits includes 8 bits, then the second set of bits includes 24 bits. If one or more subgroups are activated or set in the first set of bits (e.g., have a value of one), then the 24 remaining bits represent UEs in the one or more subgroups of UEs, as described with reference to Figures 3 through 5. In some cases, the bitmap includes at least one bit that indicates a remaining portion of the bitmap is for mobile terminated paging or a SI change, as described with reference to Figure 7.
[0108] In some cases, the second signaling includes an additional portion of the resource configuration. For example, the first signaling may configure a set of resource configurations, and the second signaling may activate at least one of the resource configurations. In some other cases, the second signaling may include a reference resource for one or more resources configured by the first signaling for the paging message. In some cases, the second signaling includes a DCI scrambled with an RNTI that identifies at least one subgroup of UEs or one or more UEs (e.g., including the UE 104) within a coverage area of the NE 102.
[0109] At 808, the UE 104 may determine that the bit associated with the identifier of the UE (e.g., UE ID) indicates that the paging message is intended for the UE if the bit has a value of one. For example, the NE 102 may set a bit in first set of bits in the bitmap that represents the subgroup of the UE 104 to one and may set a bit in the second set of bits in the bitmap that represents the identifier of the UE to one.Attorney Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCTLenovo Ref. No. SMM920240148-WO-PCT35
[0110] At 810, the UE 104 may receive (e.g., monitor, decode) one or more paging messages from the NE 102. For example, the UE 104 may receive third signaling that includes the paging messages using the one or more resources configured by the resource configuration. In some cases, the UE 104 forwards the paging messages to an upper layer if the paging messages include a paging record for the UE 104.
