[0056] In some embodiments, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, and R12are the same. For example, in some embodiments, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, and R12are the same and are selected from hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C24 alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted heteroatom-containing C1-C24 alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted C5-C20 aryl, and substituted or unsubstituted C5-C20 heteroaryl. For example, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, Rn, and R12are the same and are selected from hydrogen, phenyl, and methoxyphenyl.
[0057] Accordingly, in some embodiments the siccatives of interest have the structure of formula (la), wherein the ligand (also represented in formulae herein as “L”) of formula (I) binds to metal ions M:(la), wherein:
[0058] M is, for each occurrence, independently selected from Co, Ir, Rh, Ru, Cu, Cr, Mo, Fe, V, and Mn, or combinations thereof. In some embodiments, M is provided as a metal salt, such as a metal salt having the formula Ma+[Xb’]c. In some embodiments, anion X is selected from PFe’, SbFe', BFf, B(C6Fs)4‘, Cl’, Br’, I’, NCh’, or R2COO’ in which case a=c=2, b is 1, and R2 can be selected from C1-C20 alkyl optionally substituted with heteroatoms, C6-C20 aryl optionally substituted with heteroatoms or a polymeric residue. In some embodiments, anion X is SO42' in which case a=2 and c=l. Other anions suitable for the formula Ma+[Xb’]care known to those of ordinary skill in the art.Attorney Docket No.: DURA-004WO
[0059] With continued reference to Formulas (T) and (Ta), A is, for each occurrence, independently selected from the group consisting of C, N, O and S; and R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, and R12are as described above with reference to Formula (I).
[0060] With reference to formula (la), the ligand (L) and metal (M) can be present in any suitable ratio. By way of example, a suitable ratio of (L) to (M) is from about 0.1:1 to about 3:1, such as from 0.1:1 to 2.5:1. In one embodiment, the ratio of (L) to (M) is from about 3:1 to about 1:6, such from about 2:1 or 1:1 to about 1:6, or from about 1:1 or 1:2 to about 1:6, such as about 1:3, 1:4, or about 1:5. The heteroaryl substituted triazine ligand of Formula (I) has three potential binding sites. Thus, one mole of ligand can bind three moles of metal in a molar ratio, (L) to (M) of 1:3. As will be apparent to those of skill in the art from consideration of the ligand to metal ratios described herein, all three sites are not occupied by a metal ion when the ratio is less than 1:3. For example, when L:M is 1:1, one site of the ligand is, on average, occupied by the metal (M). By way of example, in some embodiments the L:M ratio is 1:1. In other certain embodiments, the L:M ratio is 1:2, 1:3 or 2:1.
[0061] In some embodiments, the siccatives disclosed herein comprise a mixture of metalligand complexes. In one such embodiment, a first complex is a transition metal-heteroaryl substituted triazine complex, such as a complex of a transition metal with a ligand of Formula (I), illustrated for example by Formula (la), with the siccative further comprising a second metalligand complex. In one embodiment, the second metal-ligand complex metal-heteroaryl comprises a porphyrin ligand. A porphyrin is a compound containing four nitrogen heterocycles arranged in a cyclic structure. [0077] In certain cases, the present inventors have found that siccatives comprising porphyrin-transition metal complexes contribute a tint in certain formulations. Surprisingly, the inventors have found that transition metal complexes comprising a heteroaryl substituted triazine ligand, such as the ligand of Formula (I) do not add undue tint to the same formulations. This is surprising as, in certain contexts, complexes of compounds such as Formula (I) are used as colorimetric reagents. See, for example, Dehghani et al. Determination of iron species by combination of solvent assisted-dispersive solid phase extraction and spectrophotometry. Anal. Bioanal. Chem. Res. 2(1), 13-21 (2015). Even further, combination of the presently disclosed heteroaryl substituted triazine ligand-transition metal complexes with a porphyrin-tran sition metal complex resulted in formulations having a higher whiteness index than compositions containing the porphyrin-transition metal complex alone. Moreover, such combination siccatives exhibited superior or comparable siccative function compared to both the porphyrin-transition metal complex and cobalt-based siccatives.

The cobalt, iron and manganese metalloporphyrins were made by adapting known literature methods, and the compounds were dissolved in hydrocarbon solvents suitable for use in coatings, inks and thermoset resins. 2,4,6- Tris(2-pyridyl)-s-triazine was purchased from chemical suppliers. Mn-5, 10,15,20- tetrakisphenylporphyrin was used to prepare a mixture with Mn-2.4.6-Tris(2-pyridyl)-.y-triazinc.Example 1 Preparation of Siccatives
[0118] Preparation of manganese carboxylate. Manganese carboxylate was made by reaction, for several hours, of a suitable inorganic manganese salt with a slight excess of carboxylic acids under a nitrogen atmosphere in a hydrocarbon solvent. When reaction was complete (3 to 24 hours), evidenced by no presence of the manganese salt, the by-product was removed. The dried product was diluted to a metal concentration of 10%.
[0119] In a specific example, Manganese (II) oxide (65.5 g), 2-ethylhexanoic acid (288.2 g), 80% acetic acid (13.9 g), and a Hydrocarbon solvent (147 g) were used according to the procedure.Attorney Docket No.: DURA-004WO

The reaction was monitored by thin layer chromatography (using dichloromethane as eluant) and / or UV / Visible chromatography. TLC monitors the loss of the free heteroaryl substituted triazine and the formation of the metallated heteroaryl substituted triazine. UV / Visible chromatography monitors the shift of the Soret bands and collapse of the Q bands.
[0124] Different solvents can be used to solubilize the metal carboxylate and free base heteroaryl substituted triazine. For the above procedure, hydrocarbon and hydroxylated solvents were used because of the application area for the final product. Furthermore, this method of metallation may be used for different metal salts and free base heteroaryl substituted triazine. AsAttorney Docket No.: DURA-004WO is understood by those of skill in the art, changes in the molar ratios of the metal salt and free base hctcroaryl substituted triazinc affect the process time and final product yield.

[0126] A heteroaryl substituted triazine-metal solution in a combination of hydrocarbon and hydroxylated solvents was mixed with a porphirine-metal solution (Prepared as described in patent W02012092034A2) in a combination of hydrocarbon and hydroxylated solvents for between 1 and 3 hours at room temperature.
[0127] In some embodiments, the siccatives of interest are a mix between complexes. For example, in some embodiments the siccatives are mixes of Mn-heteroaryl substituted triazine of Formula (I) and Mn-porphirine of Formula (II). For example, in some embodiments the siccative is a mix between Mn-2,4,6-Tris(2-pyridyl)-s'-triazine (TPTZ) and Mn-5, 10, 15,20- tetrakisphenylporphyrin (TPP).
[0128] In an specific example, 700 g of a 1% Metal solution of Mn-TPTZ in a combination of hydrocarbon and hydroxylated solvents were mixed with 300 g of a 0.1% Metal solution of MnTPP in a combination of hydrocarbon and hydroxylated solvents. Addition rates, cobalt 2-ethylhexanoate 10% metal solution Mn-2,4,6-Tris(2- pyridyl)-5'-triazine (TPTZ) 1% metal solution and 70:30 mix of Mn-2,4,6-Tris(2-pyridyl)-s- triazine (TPTZ; 1% metal solution) and Mn-5, 10, 15,20- tetrakisphenylporphyrin (TPP; 0.1% metal solution) (TPTZ / TPP), are between 0.05% and 0.8% w / w.. Formulations were prepared using white paints, solvent and water based, alkyds, alkyd emulsions, and polyurethane modified materials. The metal carboxylates were added to the test compositions under agitation and mixed thoroughly for a minimum of 15 minutes.
[0130] Drying Test. The test coatings were applied to glass slides using applicator cubes to give a wet film of thickness applicable to the application area of the test coating. For the purposes of these tests the wet film thickness range was from 37 to 200 micron, with the majority at 100 orAttorney Docket No.: DURA-004WO150 micron. The different stages of drying were determined using Beck Koller drying recorders over a set time period under controlled conditions of constant temperature and humidity.
[0131] Color Test. To measure the change in the film color the test substrates were applied to prepared color cards (at the same wet film thickness as was used for the drying test). The films were allowed to dry overnight in the dark. Using a color meter the La*b* values were recorded. The dried films were left in the dark under controlled conditions of constant temperature and humidity for a minimum of 4 weeks. After this time the La*b* values were re-measured and the change from the initial values calculated.
[0132] The above procedure was repeated a number of times. In each repetition drying times were measured for the coatings containing TPTZ and the coatings containing Co reference. Table 1 below provides comparison of drying time (hrs) data. The data were obtained representing the drying process as four distinct phases (BK1, BK2, BK3, and BK4). Calcium and Zirconium carboxylates were present in the mixtures as co-driers. Additionally, La*b* measured color of the paint film arc shown before and after ageing.
[0133] The above procedure was repeated a number of times using TPTZ / TPP siccative. In each repetition drying times were measured for the coatings containing TPTZ / TPP, the coatings containing TPTZ and the coatings containing Co reference. Table 2 below provides comparison of drying time (h) data. The data were obtained representing the drying process as four distinct phases (BK1, BK2, BK3, and BK4). Calcium and Zirconium carboxylates were present in the mixtures as co-driers. Additionally, La*b* measured color of the paint film are shown before and after ageing.

[0135] Unsaturated polyester resins (from Example 2) of different reactivity (determined by the ratio of maleic I fumaric acid to phthalic I isophthalic acid) were prepared in styrene. These resins were utilized for the evaluation of the different metal carboxylates.
[0136] Addition rates, cobalt 2-ethylhexanoate 10% metal solution Mn-2,4,6-Tris(2-pyridyl)- .s-triazinc (TPTZ) 1% metal solution and 70:30 mix of Mn-2,4,6-Tris(2-pyridyl)-5-triazinc (TPTZ; 1% metal solution) and Mn-5, 10, 15,20- tetrakisphenylporphyrin (TPP; 0.1% metal solution) (TPTZ / TPP), were between 0.05% and 0.5% w / w. The metal carboxylates were added to the test compositions under agitation and mixed thoroughly for a minimum of 15 minutes. Samples were prepared using clear, pigmented, low styrene emission gelcoats, laminating resins and casting resins, with Potassium and Copper carboxylates as the co-accelerators.
[0137] The gel times were determined using Techne gel timers (plunge technique) using a minimum of 50 ml of test resin. The cure time and heat exotherm were measured using a thermocouple. The thermocouple was inserted into the gelled test resin immediately after the resin had gelled. The cure time was the elapsed time from the point of gelation to the point of highest exotherm. The peak exotherm was the highest temperature reached during the curing process.
[0138] The laminate hardness development was determined with a 2-plyglass fiber (450 g / m2) reinforced unsaturated polyester resin composition. The resin to glass fiber ratio was between 2 and 4 : 1. A small quantity of the initiated resin was applied to the backing plastic, to this was added the first layer of glass fiber and rolled through to thoroughly wet out the glass fiber mat. The remaining resin was poured onto the first mat and the second layer applied on top and as previously rolled out to thoroughly wet out the glass fiber matting. The laminate was allowed to gel and cure, the hardness development was tested at regular intervals using Shore-D and Barcol 934.1 impellors.
[0139] The cast hardness development was determined on the resin alone, no reinforcement used. The initiated resin was poured into a metal ring and allowed to gel and cure, the hardness development was tested at regular intervals using Shore-D and Barcol 934.1 impellors.
[0140] In the evaluation of the different unsaturated polyester resin systems the addition rates of the potassium and copper carboxylates were set according to the required cure and exothermsAttorney Docket No.: DURA-004WO for the resins under test. For each individual system the same addition rates were used for the copper and potassium when comparing the performance of both Mn-2,4,6-Tris(2-pyridyl)- - triazine (TPTZ) and the mix of Mn-2,4,6-Tris(2-pyridyl)-.s-(riazinc (TPTZ) and Mn-5, 10, 15,20- tetrakisphenylporphyrin (TPTZ / TPP) to that of the cobalt standard. Data are provided in the following tables.Table 3. Gel time comparisons for UP resinsTable 4. Cure time for Laminate 1Attorney Docket No.: DURA-004WOTable 5. Laminate 1 Hardness Development112-ply 450g / m2glass fiber, 2.5:1 resin to glass
[0141] In Table 3, it can be seen that the resin using TPTZ and the combination TPTZ / TPP siccative had comparable or faster gel times compared with the resin using Co.
[0142] In Table 4, it can be seen that, in this particular experiment, the temperature of the resin using TPTZ / TPP immediately after gelation is roughly the same as the temperature of the resin using Co (the resin using TPTZ alone is comparably higher immediately after gelation, but that such temperature increases more rapidly for both the resin containing TPTZ as a single agent and for the resin containing a combination of TPTZ / TPP.
[0143] In Table 5, it can be seen that hardness development in a laminate using TPTZ alone or a combination of TPTZ and TPP is roughly equivalent (or better) compared with hardness development in a laminate using Co.
