Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ENHANCED CHANNEL STATE INFORMATION REFERENCE SIGNAL RESOURCE INDICATORTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This application relates generally to wireless communication systems, including systems, apparatuses, and methods for method and apparatus for an enhanced channel state information reference signal resource indicator.BACKGROUND

[0002] Wireless mobile communication technology uses various standards and protocols to transmit data between a network device (e.g., a base station, a radio head, etc. ) and a wireless communication device. Wireless communication system standards and protocols can include, for example, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) long term evolution (LTE) (e.g., 4G) , 3GPP new radio (NR) (e.g., 5G) , and IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless local area networks (WLAN) (commonly known to industry groups as ) .

[0003] As contemplated by the 3GPP, different wireless communication systems standards and protocols can use various radio access networks (RANs) for communicating between a network device of the RAN (which may also sometimes be referred to generally as a RAN node, a network node, or simply a node) and a wireless communication device known as a user equipment (UE) . 3GPP RANs can include, for example, global system for mobile communications (GSM) , enhanced data rates for GSM evolution (EDGE) RAN (GERAN) , Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) , Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) , and / or Next-Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) .

[0004] Each RAN may use one or more radio access technologies (RATs) to perform communication between the network device and the UE. For example, the GERAN implements GSM and / or EDGE RAT, the UTRAN implements universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) RAT or other 3GPP RAT, the E-UTRAN implements LTE RAT (sometimes simply referred to as LTE) , and NG-RAN implements NR RAT (sometimes referred to herein as 5G RAT, 5G NR RAT, or simply NR) . In certain deployments, the E-UTRAN may also implement NR RAT. In certain deployments, NG-RAN may also implement LTE RAT.

[0005] A network device used by a RAN may correspond to that RAN. One example of an E-UTRAN network device is an E-UTRAN Node B (also commonly denoted as evolved Node B, enhanced Node B, eNodeB, or eNB) . One example of an NG-RAN network device is a next generation Node B (also sometimes referred to as a g Node B or gNB) .

[0006] A RAN provides its communication services with external entities through its connection to a core network (CN) . For example, E-UTRAN may utilize an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) , while NG-RAN may utilize a 5G Core Network (5GC) .BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0014] Various embodiments are described with regard to a processor (e.g., baseband processor) , wireless device (e.g., a user equipment (UE) ) , or a network device. However, reference  to a processor, wireless device, or network device is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component or device that may establish a wireless connection and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data over the wireless connection. Therefore, the processors, wireless devices, and network devices described herein are used to represent any appropriate electronic components or devices.

[0015] Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) is a radio access technology that uses multiple antennas to create multiple spatial paths between transmitters and receivers. One feature of MIMO is spatial multiplexing, which enables multiple data streams to be transmitted simultaneously across different spatial paths. This may increase data rates without use an increased amount of bandwidth since each stream may be independently transmitted and decoded. MIMO may also be used for beamforming, where signals are directed toward specific spatial direction, for example UEs served by a network device transmitted using beamforming, by adjusting the phase and amplitude of signals transmitted from each antenna. In some examples, an increased quantity of antennas used for beamforming using MIMO may support a larger number of simultaneous connections with finer control of spatial multiplexing and beamforming.

[0016] A network device that is using beamforming in a MIMO system to provide a quantity of beams may transmit channel state information reference signals (CSI-RS) for each of the beams. The UE may measure the CSI-RS of the various beams to measure the quality of the channel from each beam direction. The measurements may include a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) , a reference signal received power (RSRP) , and / or reference signal received quality (RSRQ) .

[0017] A CSI-RS port is a logical entity used by a network device (e.g., a base station using MIMO) to transmit CSI-RS for UEs, including UEs served by the network device. A CSI-RS port is a virtual or logical construct that represents a unique spatial path, angle, or direction for CSI-RS transmission. The CSI-RS port is logical, and not a physical antenna. For example, a single physical antenna may support multiple logical CSI-RS ports. This flexibility allows the same hardware to send reference signals along different spatial paths, which the UE then measures and reports back to the base station. In one example, by using the measurements of CSI-RS, the network device determines the most effective beam direction for each user, which may support adaptive and precise beamforming. The CSI measurement report may include parameters for a  channel quality indicator (CQI) , precoding matrix indicator (PMI) , and rank indicator (RI) . The CQI value is a numerical indicator that reflects the overall channel quality, where a higher CQI allows the network to use higher modulation schemes and coding rates, which increase the data rate. The RI represents the number of independent data streams, or spatial layers, that can be transmitted simultaneously over a channel. The PMI is a recommendation for the optimal precoding configuration, allowing the network to focus its transmission and provide reliable, high-quality connectivity in complex and varying channel conditions. The PMI indicates the best possible precoding matrix for the current channel conditions, helping the base station direct its beamformed signals more accurately toward the UE.

[0018] The number of CSI-RS ports may vary depending on the deployment. In a simple configurations, there may be a single CSI-RS port, while in massive MIMO scenarios with many antennas, the quantity of CSI-RS ports may be relatively larger (e.g., 32, 64, or more CSI-RS ports) . In such cases, the CSI-RS ports often form an array corresponding to a larger grid of virtual antennas, allowing fine-grained beamforming with spatially targeted beams.

[0019] Network entities increasingly use a larger total quantity of antenna elements, which may enable an increased quantity of beams. The quantity of antenna elements continues to increase, especially for mid-frequency and high-frequency bands. According to current techniques, a limited quantity of CSI-RS ports may be supported in designs, which may be less than a quantity of antenna elements. For example, a maximum of 32 CSI-RS ports may supported for downlink CSI acquisition and MIMO operation. Hybrid beamforming may be used to support an increased quantity of antenna elements in the context of a limited set of CSI-RS ports.

[0020] In hybrid beamforming, a set of antenna elements may be mapped to a single CSI-RS port. In some cases, hybrid beamforming may be used to support up to a total of 128 CSI-RS ports, with up to 32 CSI-RS ports per resource (CSI-RS resource) . However, existing designs may not adequately support hybrid beamforming. In particular, existing techniques for channel measure resources (CMR) and CSI reporting are inadequate to support hybrid beamforming.

[0021] In light of these and other challenges, techniques that support CRI in the context of hybrid beamforming is described. A UE can be configured with a plurality of CSI-RS resources for a plurality of CSI-RS ports, where each CSI-RS resource is associated with a subset of CSI-RS ports of the plurality of CSI-RS ports. That is, multiple of the CSI-RS ports map to each CSI- RS resource. Each CSI-RS resource occupies a set of time and frequency resources, for example at least one symbol (which may also be referred to as a symbol period) of a slot. As further described herein, the CSI-RS resources may span multiple slots. For example, there may be four different beams corresponding to four sets of CSI-RS resources. A UE may not be able to take the CSI measurements on all four set of CSI-RS resources within a single slot. As such at least one of the CSI-RS resources may be in a slot different from one or more of the other CSI-RS resources. A UE and / or the baseband processor of the UE may then measure reference signals received on the CSI-RS resources, and determine CSI for the corresponding CSI-RS ports. Parameters for the CSI report, including CQI, PMI, and RI may then be determined, and the CSI report transmitted to the network device serving the UE.

[0022] FIG. 1 shows an example wireless communications system 100, according to one or more aspects described herein. In one or more embodiments, wireless communications system 100 supports one or more aspects of method and apparatus for enhanced channel state information reference signal resource indicator, as further described herein.

[0023] Wireless communications system 100 includes a UE 102 having a wireless connection with a network device 104. The UE 102 may be served by the network device 104 within a coverage area 110 of the network device 104. The network device 104 may include components 106 that enable the network device 104 to perform hybrid beamforming. As an example, the components 106 may include a dynamic digital beamforming portion 140 as a first step in the hybrid beamforming, and multiple semi-static beamforming portions as a second step in the hybrid beamforming.

[0024] The dynamic digital beamforming portion 140 may operate across a set of CSI-RS ports, which may also be referred to as digital ports. The network device 104 may be able to dynamically change a precoder used for MIMO operations, for example to improve the coverage and throughput of the beams that are subject to the beamforming.

[0025] The semi-static beamforming portions 142 through 144 may map each set or group of antenna elements to a single digital port of the dynamic digital beamforming portion 140. As shown with reference to the wireless communications system 100, the semi-static beamforming portions such as the semi-static beamforming portion 142, each have four antenna elements. In one example, where there dynamic digital beamforming portion 140 includes 32 digital ports (e.g.,  CSI-RS ports) , and each semi-static beamforming portion has 4 antenna elements, up to 128 antenna elements mapping to 32 digital ports may be supported for hybrid beamforming.

[0026] In addition, each of the semi-static beamforming portions 142 through 144 have an associated set of beams, including at least a first set of beams 130 associated with the semi-static beamforming portion 142, and a second set of beams 132 associated with the semi-static beamforming portion 144.

[0027] The UE 102 may receive control signaling 122 that configures CSI-RS resources for a plurality of CSI-RS ports (e.g., the 128 digital ports) . Each of the CSI-RS resource (e.g., corresponding to a different value of CRI) may be associated with a subset of the plurality of CSI-RS ports. As further discussed herein, at least one of the CSI-RS resources (e.g., corresponding a first CRI index value) may be in a different slot from a second CSI-RS resource (e.g., corresponding a second CRI index value) .

[0028] The UE 102 measures the references signals (e.g., CSI-RS) received on the indicated CSI-RS resources to determine CSI feedback. The UE 102 may measure the reference signals and determine feedback for the UE. The determined feedback may include one or more of a CQI, PMI, RI, or layer indicator (LI) , and is transmitted in a CSI report 124. In some examples, the CSI feedback represents a best semi-static beamforming, as determined by the UE 102.

[0029] The techniques described herein may support both a single panel codebook (e.g., Release 15 Type-1 single panel (SP) codebook) and an enhanced codebook (e.g., Release 16 eType-2 codebook) . The network may configure more than one (Ks > 1) CSI-RS resources for channel measurement resources (CMR) . The network, for example via the network device 104, can then configure the UE 102 to report CSI for less than or equal to a number of CSI-RS resources, for example less than or equal to four CSI-RS resources (M ≤ 4) . The network can configure a set of CSI-RS resources (MR) that the UE 102 needs to select out of the M resources. The UE 102 can then select and report (M -MR) CSI resources from among the remaining (KS -MR) CSI-RS resources. For each reported CSI-RS resource, the UE 102 reports a set of RI / CQI / PMI and LI (if applicable) . In some examples, different combination of the number of CSI resources (KS) and the maximum number of ports per CSI-RS resource may be preconfigured at the UE 102.

[0030] FIG. 2A shows an example signaling diagram 201, according to one or more aspects described herein. In one or more embodiments, signaling diagram 201 supports one or more  aspects of method and apparatus for enhanced channel state information reference signal resource indicator, as further described herein. Signaling diagram 201 depicts signaling, including reference signals (e.g., CSI-RS) transmitted from a network device 104 using aspects of a hybrid beamforming technique as described herein.

[0031] In some examples, for CRI supporting up to 128 ports, when the network (e.g., via the network device 104) configures CSI-RS resources, signaling to support the configuration of CSI-RS resources in more than one slot may be made between the network device 104 and the UE 102. The UE 102 may receive (e.g., with the control signaling that configures the plurality of CSI-RS resources) , an indication of a slot offset for one or more CSI-RS resources of the plurality of CSI-RS resources. In some examples, an information element in a CSI-RS resource configuration (e.g., NZP-CSI-RS-Resource) may configure a slot offset for aperiodic CSI-RS resources.

[0032] In a first example, the indication of a slot offset identifies a quantity of slots for the slot offset. The CSI-RS resource configuration can indicate more than one candidate values, i.e., 0 / 1 / 2 slot offset (e.g., aperiodicSlotOffset-r19 INTEGER (0. . 2) , OPTIONAL, --Cond Aperiodic) .

[0033] In a second example, the indication of a slot offset indicates that the slot offset is to be applied to the one or more CSI-RS resources, a quantity of slots for the slot offset preconfigured at the baseband processor. The CSI-RS resource configuration can indicate whether a slot offset (e.g., a slot offset of 1) is configured (e.g., aperiodicSlotOffset-r19 ENUMERATED {true} , OPTIONAL, --Cond Aperiodic) .

[0034] In the example depicted in signaling diagram 201, there is a set of four of CSI-RS resources 210, including a first CSI-RS 212, a second CSI-RS 214, a third CSI-RS 216, and a fourth CSI-RS 218. The first two CSI-RS resources, the first CSI-RS 212 and the second CSI-RS 214, fall within the slot n. As such, their respective CSI-RS resource configurations may indicate no offset. However, the second two CSI-RS resources, the third CSI-RS 216 and the fourth CSI-RS 218, fall within the slot n+1. As such, their respective CSI-RS resource configurations may indicate an offset of “1” (e.g., for the first example) or an offset is “true” or otherwise applicable (e.g., for the second example) .

[0035] FIG. 2B shows an example signaling diagram 202, according to one or more aspects described herein. In one or more embodiments, signaling diagram 202 supports one or more aspects of method and apparatus for enhanced channel state information reference signal resource  indicator, as further described herein. Signaling diagram 202 depicts signaling, including reference signals (e.g., CSI-RS) transmitted from a network device 104 using aspects of a hybrid beamforming technique as described herein.

[0036] In some examples, the plurality of CSI-RS resources comprise a first CSI-RS resource set in a first slot and a second CSI-RS resource set in a second slot different from the first slot. For CRI supporting up to 128 ports, when the network (e.g., via the network device 104) configures CSI-RS resources (e.g., for aperiodic CSI-RS) , such CSI-RS resources may be supported to be in more than one slot. For examples, more than one resource set (e.g., an NZP-CSI-RS-ResourceSet) can be associated with a CSI report (e.g., an aperiodic CSI-RS report) . In some examples, the CSI-RS resource set (e.g., CSI-RS-ResourceSet) can be configured in an associated report configuration (CSI-AssociatedReportConfigInfo) . For example, the first CSI-RS resource set may be configured in a first resources for a channel (e.g., resourcesForChannel) , and the second CSI-RS resource set may be configured in a second resources for a channel (e.g., resourcesForChannel2) .

[0037] In the example depicted in signaling diagram 202, there are four of CSI-RS resources 210, including a first CSI-RS 232, a second CSI-RS 234, a third CSI-RS 236, and a fourth CSI-RS 238. The first two CSI-RS resources that make up the first set 230 (e.g., corresponding to first resources for a channel, resourcesForChannel) , the first CSI-RS 232 and the second CSI-RS 234, fall within the slot n. However, the second two CSI-RS resources that make up the second set 231 (e.g., corresponding to second resources for a channel, resourcesForChannel2) , the third CSI-RS 216 and the fourth CSI-RS 218, fall within the slot n+1.

[0038] FIG. 2C shows an example signaling diagram 203, according to one or more aspects described herein. In one or more embodiments, signaling diagram 203 supports one or more aspects of method and apparatus for enhanced channel state information reference signal resource indicator, as further described herein. Signaling diagram 203 depicts signaling, including reference signals (e.g., CSI-RS) transmitted from a network device 104 using aspects of a hybrid beamforming technique as described herein.

[0039] In some examples, the plurality of CSI-RS resources are restricted to be within a preconfigured quantity of slots. For CRI supporting up to 128 ports, when the network (e.g., via the network device 104) configures CSI-RS resources (e.g., for aperiodic CSI-RS) , such CSI-RS  resources may be supported to be contained within 1 or 2 slots (e.g., {1, 2} slots) . In some examples, the UE 102 may provide an indication of the capability to contain CSI-RS resources to be within one slot, or within 2 slots, In some examples, an additional UE capability can be supported for the UE 102 to indicate whether UE supports CSI-RS resources contained within more than 1 or 2 slots) .

[0040] In other examples, the same restriction can also be applied to the CSI-RS resources configured for a Type I and Type II codebook enhancement for up to 128 ports. In yet other examples, In other examples, the same restriction can also be applied to the CSI-RS resources configured for delay, frequency and / or phase offset report for coherent joint transmission (CJT) calibration.

[0041] In the example depicted in signaling diagram 203, there are four of CSI-RS resources 250, including a first CSI-RS 252, a second CSI-RS 254, a third CSI-RS 256, and a fourth CSI-RS 258. The first two CSI-RS resources, the first CSI-RS 252 and the second CSI-RS 254, fall within the slot n. As such, their respective CSI-RS resource configurations may indicate no offset. According to a restriction on the slots, the slot configuration 261 may not be allowed to be configured, while the slot configuration 260 is allowed to be configured.

[0042] FIG. 3A shows an example signaling diagram 301, according to one or more aspects described herein. In one or more embodiments, signaling diagram 301 supports one or more aspects of method and apparatus for enhanced channel state information reference signal resource indicator, as further described herein. Signaling diagram 301 depicts signaling, including reference signals (e.g., CSI-RS) transmitted from a network device 104 using aspects of a hybrid beamforming technique as described herein.

[0043] In some examples, the plurality of CSI-RS resources are restricted to be within a same discontinuous reception (DRX) active time. For CRI supporting up to 128 ports, when the network (e.g., via the network device 104) configures CSI-RS resources (e.g., for aperiodic CSI-RS) , all (e.g., KS > 1) of such CSI-RS resources may be required (e.g., restricted) to be contained within the same DRX active time. Additional UE capability can be supported for UE to indicate whether UE supports all (e.g., KS > 1) CSI-RS resources contained within more than 1 DRX active time.

[0044] In other examples, the same restriction can also be applied to the CSI-RS resources configured for a Type I and Type II codebook enhancement for up to 128 ports. In yet other  examples, In other examples, the same restriction can also be applied to the CSI-RS resources configured for delay, frequency and / or phase offset report for CJT calibration.

[0045] In the example depicted in signaling diagram 301, there are four of CSI-RS resources, including a first CSI-RS 312, a second CSI-RS 314, a third CSI-RS 316, and a fourth CSI-RS 318. The CSI-RS resource configuration 320 is allowed or configurable, the four of CSI-RS resources being within a same DRX active time of the DRX cycle. The CSI-RS resource configuration 321 is forbidden or not configurable because two of the CSI-RS resources occur within one DRX active time, while another two of the CSI-RS resources occur within a different DRX active time.

[0046] FIG. 3B shows an example signaling diagram 302, according to one or more aspects described herein. In one or more embodiments, signaling diagram 302 supports one or more aspects of method and apparatus for enhanced channel state information reference signal resource indicator, as further described herein. Signaling diagram 302 depicts signaling, including reference signals (e.g., CSI-RS) transmitted from a network device 104 using aspects of a hybrid beamforming technique as described herein.

[0047] In some examples, the plurality of CSI-RS resources are restricted to be within a continuous set of downlink slots for a time division duplex (TDD) uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) frame configuration. The UE 102 may receive an indication of an UL-DL frame configuration for a plurality of slots that include at least a first slot for the first CSI-RS resource and a second slot for the second CSI-RS resource. The UE 102 may identify that the first slot and the second slot are restricted to be within DL slots of the UL-DL frame configuration without any uplink slots of the UL-DL frame configuration being between the first slot and the second slot.

[0048] For CRI supporting up to 128 ports, when the network (e.g., via the network device 104) configures CSI-RS resources, all (e.g., KS > 1) of such CSI-RS resources may be required (e.g., restricted) to have no DL and UL switching between CSI-RS resources. Additional UE capability can be supported for UE to indicate whether the UE 102 supports DL and UL switching between the (e.g., KS > 1) CSI-RS resources.

[0049] In other examples, the same restriction can also be applied to the CSI-RS resources configured for a Type I and Type II codebook enhancement for up to 128 ports. In yet other examples, In other examples, the same restriction can also be applied to the CSI-RS resources configured for delay, frequency and / or phase offset report for CJT calibration.

[0050] In the example depicted in signaling diagram 302, there are four of CSI-RS resources, including a first CSI-RS 332, a second CSI-RS 334, a third CSI-RS 336, and a fourth CSI-RS 338. The CSI-RS resource configuration 360 is allowed or configurable because there are only DL slots during the time duration that spans the four of CSI-RS resources. The CSI-RS resource configuration 361 is forbidden or not configurable because of the presence of a scheduled one or more uplink slots 340 that occurs during at least a portion of the time duration that spans the four of CSI-RS resources.

[0051] FIG. 4 shows an example signaling diagram 400, according to one or more aspects described herein. In one or more embodiments, signaling diagram 400 supports one or more aspects of method and apparatus for enhanced channel state information reference signal resource indicator, as further described herein. Signaling diagram 400 depicts signaling, including reference signals (e.g., CSI-RS, and CSI report) transmitted from a network device 104 using aspects of a hybrid beamforming technique as described herein.

[0052] In the example depicted in signaling diagram 302, there are four of CSI-RS resources, including a first CSI-RS 412, a second CSI-RS 414, a third CSI-RS 416, and a fourth CSI-RS 418. Resources 420 are schedule for the UE 102 to transmit a CSI report. A CSI reference resource 422 may define a threshold time duration between the CSI reference resource 422 and a CSI-RS that will be measured for inclusion in the CSI report to be transmitted by the UE 102 using the resources 420.

[0053] As depicted in signaling diagram 302, measurements based on reference signals received during the first CSI-RS 412 and the second CSI-RS 414 (before the CSI reference resource 422) may be considered for inclusion in the CSI report while measurements based on reference signals received during the third CSI-RS 416 and the fourth CSI-RS 418 (on or after the CSI reference resource 422) may be considered for exclusion from the CSI report. In some examples, the entire CSI report may be dropped. In other examples, the UE may report partial CSI, for example based on the first CSI-RS 412 and the second CSI-RS 414 (e.g., but not the third CSI-RS 416 and the fourth CSI-RS 418) .

[0054] In some examples, for CRI enhancement to support up to 128 ports, when the network configures KS > 1 CSI-RS resources, if the UE 102 is able to measure K < KS CSI-RS resource, and if partial CSI report is supported, then among K < KS CSI-RS resources, K = K1 + K2. In this  instance, K1 CSI-RS resource are among the MR CSI-RS resources configured by the NW that UE has to select, and K2 CSI-RS resource are among the (KS -MR) CSI-RS resources that UE can select. For the K1 CSI-RS resource, the UE 102 reports the corresponding RI / CQI / PMI and LI (if applicable) for the K1 CSI-RS resource. Additionally, the UE 102 may report the K1 CSI-RS resource explicitly in the CSI (e.g., the CSI report) , for example, using a bitmap. For the other (MR -K1) resources that are selected by the network, there may be at least two options. In a first example, the UE 102 does not report the corresponding RI / CQI / PMI and LI (if applicable) . In a second example, the UE 102 still reports the corresponding RI / CQI / PMI and LI (if applicable) , but also has a reserved codepoint to indicate that the report is invalid. In some examples, the network can configure the UE 102 to report CSI for M ≤ 4 CSI-RS resources, among which the network can configure MR CSI-RS resources (that is, the UE 102 needs to select resources) . The UE 102 may select and report (M -MR) CSI-RS resources among the remaining (KS -MR) CSI-RS resources.

[0055] In some examples, for CRI enhancement to support up to 128 ports, when the network configures KS > 1 CSI-RS resources, if the UE 102 is able to measure K < KS CSI-RS resource, and if partial CSI report is supported, then among K < KS CSI-RS resources, K = K1 + K2. In this instance, K1 CSI-RS resource are among the MR CSI-RS resources configured by the NW that UE has to select, and K2 CSI-RS resource are among the (KS -MR) CSI-RS resources that UE can select. For the K2 CSI-RS resource If K2 ≥ (M -MR) , then the UE selects and reports (M -MR) CSI-RS resources among K2 CSI-RS resources, and the encoding (e.g., CRI) still assumes (KS -MR) CSI-RS resources. If K2 < (M -MR) , then two different options may be applied. In a first examples, the UE 102 selects and reports (M -MR) CSI-RS resources. For each selected CSI-RS resource, regarding RI / CQI / PMI and LI (if applicable) , a codepoint is created to indicate that the corresponding report is invalid. In a second example, the UE 102 reports that the UE 102 only selects K2 CSI-RS resources and the corresponding RI / CQI / PMI and LI (if applicable) for the selected CSI-RS resource.

[0056] FIG. 5 shows an example method 500 of wireless communication by a UE, according to one or more aspects described herein. In some cases, the UE may be the wireless device 802 or UE 102. In some cases, the method 500 may be performed by a baseband processor of the UE. In some embodiments, the baseband processor may include one or more processor cores, and memory that is coupled to the processor core (s) . The memory may store instructions that, when executed  by the processor core (s) , causes the baseband processor to perform the operations of the method 500. As the baseband processor performs the operations of the method 500, the baseband processor may also cause other components of the UE to perform, or discontinue, various operations.

[0057] At 502, the method 500 includes configuring CSI-RS resources across multiple slots. In some embodiments, the method 500 includes receiving control signaling that configures a plurality of CSI-RS resources for a plurality of CSI-RS ports, each CSI-RS resource of the plurality of CSI-RS resources associated with a subset of CSI-RS ports of the plurality of CSI-RS ports, and at least a first CSI-RS resource of the plurality of CSI-RS resources is in a different slot from a second CSI-RS resource of the plurality of CSI-RS resources.

[0058] At 504, the method 500 includes determining CSI for the CSI-RS resources. In some embodiments, the method 500 includes determining CSI for the plurality of CSI-RS ports based at least in part on reference signals received on the plurality of CSI-RS resources, including the first CSI-RS resource and the second CSI-RS resource.

[0059] At 506, the method 500 includes transmitting a CSI report for the CSI. In some embodiments, the method 500 includes transmitting a CSI report that includes the determined CSI for the plurality of CSI-RS ports.

[0060] In one or more embodiments, the method further includes receiving, with the control signaling that configures the plurality of CSI-RS resources, an indication of a slot offset for one or more CSI-RS resources of the plurality of CSI-RS resources.

[0061] In some embodiments, the indication of a slot offset identifies a quantity of slots for the slot offset. In some embodiments, the indication of a slot offset indicates that the slot offset is to be applied to the one or more CSI-RS resources, a quantity of slots for the slot offset preconfigured at the baseband processor. In some embodiments, the plurality of CSI-RS resources include a first CSI-RS resource set in a first slot and a second CSI-RS resource set in a second slot different from the first slot.

[0062] In some embodiments, the plurality of CSI-RS resources are restricted to be within a preconfigured quantity of slots. In some embodiments, the plurality of CSI-RS resources are restricted to be within a same discontinuous reception active time.

[0063] In one or more embodiments, the method further includes receiving an indication of an uplink-downlink frame configuration for a plurality of slots that include at least a first slot for the first CSI-RS resource and a second slot for the second CSI-RS resource; and identifying that the first slot and the second slot are restricted to be within downlink slots of the uplink-downlink frame configuration without any uplink slots of the uplink-downlink frame configuration being between the first slot and the second slot.

[0064] In one or more embodiments, the method further includes determining that resources for a second CSI report are within a threshold time duration of at least one CSI-RS resource of the plurality of CSI-RS resources, the second CSI report based at least in part on the plurality of CSI-RS resources for the plurality of CSI-RS ports; and dropping the second CSI report responsive to the determination.

[0065] In one or more embodiments, the method further includes determining that resources for a second CSI report are within a threshold time duration of at least the first CSI-RS resource of the plurality of CSI-RS resources, the second CSI report based at least in part on the second CSI-RS resource of the plurality of CSI-RS resources that are not within the threshold time duration; and transmitting a portion of the second CSI report responsive to the determination, the portion of the CSI report based at least in part on the second CSI-RS resource.

[0066] In one or more embodiments, the method further includes determining a subset of CSI-RS resources of the plurality of CSI-RS resources on which the CSI report is to be based; and transmitting a partial CSI report based at least in part on the subset of CSI-RS resources.

[0067] In one or more embodiments, the method further includes determining a subset of CSI-RS resources of the plurality of CSI-RS resources on which the CSI report is to be based; and transmitting a partial CSI report based at least in part on the subset of CSI-RS resources, where the partial CSI report is encoded assuming a set of CSI-RS resources larger than the subset of CSI-RS resources.

[0068] The method 500 may be variously embodied, extended, or adapted, as described in the following paragraphs and elsewhere in this description.

[0087] As shown, the wireless communication system 700 includes UE 702 and UE 704 (although any number of UEs may be used) . In this example, the UE 702 and the UE 704 are illustrated as smartphones (e.g., handheld touchscreen mobile computing devices connectable to one or more cellular networks) but may also comprise any mobile or non-mobile computing device configured for wireless communication.

[0088] The UE 702 and UE 704 may be configured to communicatively couple with a RAN 706. In embodiments, the RAN 706 may be NG-RAN, E-UTRAN, etc. The UE 702 and UE 704 utilize connections (or channels) (shown as connection 708 and connection 710, respectively) with the RAN 706, each of which comprises a physical communications interface. The RAN 706 can include one or more network devices, such as base station 712 and base station 714, that enable the connection 708 and connection 710.

[0089] In this example, the connection 708 and connection 710 are air interfaces to enable such communicative coupling and may be consistent with RAT (s) used by the RAN 706, such as, for example, an LTE and / or NR.

[0090] In some embodiments, the UE 702 and UE 704 may also directly exchange communication data via a sidelink interface 716. The UE 704 is shown to be configured to access an access point (shown as AP 718) via connection 720. By way of example, the connection 720 can comprise a local wireless connection, such as a connection consistent with any IEEE 802.11 protocol, wherein the AP 718 may comprise a router. In this example, the AP 718 may be connected to another network (for example, the Internet) without going through a CN 724.

[0091] In embodiments, the UE 702 and UE 704 can be configured to communicate using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication signals with each other or  with the base station 712 and / or the base station 714 over a multicarrier communication channel in accordance with various communication techniques, such as, but not limited to, an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) communication technique (e.g., for downlink communications) or a single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) communication technique (e.g., for uplink and ProSe or sidelink communications) , although the scope of the embodiments is not limited in this respect. The OFDM signals can comprise a plurality of orthogonal subcarriers.

[0092] In some embodiments, all or parts of the base station 712 or base station 714 may be implemented as one or more software entities running on server computers as part of a virtual network. In addition, or in other embodiments, the base station 712 or base station 714 may be configured to communicate with one another via interface 722. In embodiments where the wireless communication system 700 is an LTE system (e.g., when the CN 724 is an EPC) , the interface 722 may be an X2 interface. The X2 interface may be defined between two or more network devices of a RAN (e.g., two or more eNBs and the like) that connect to an EPC, and / or between two eNBs connecting to the EPC. In embodiments where the wireless communication system 700 is an NR system (e.g., when CN 724 is a 5GC) , the interface 722 may be an Xn interface. The Xn interface is defined between two or more network devices of a RAN (e.g., two or more gNBs and the like) that connect to the 5GC, between a base station 712 (e.g., a gNB) connecting to the 5GC and an eNB, and / or between two eNBs connecting to the 5GC (e.g., CN 724) .

[0100] The wireless device 802 may include one or more transceiver (s) 810 (also collectively referred to as a transceiver 810) that may include radio frequency (RF) transmitter and / or receiver circuitry that use the antenna (s) 812 of the wireless device 802 to facilitate signaling (e.g., the signaling 838) to and / or from the wireless device 802 with other devices (e.g., the network device 820) according to corresponding RATs.

[0101] The wireless device 802 may include one or more antenna (s) 812 (e.g., one, two, four, eight, or more) . For embodiments with multiple antenna (s) 812, the wireless device 802 may leverage the spatial diversity of such multiple antenna (s) 812 to send and / or receive multiple different data streams on the same time and frequency resources. This behavior may be referred to as, for example, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) behavior (referring to the multiple antennas used at each of a transmitting device and a receiving device that enable this aspect) . MIMO transmissions by the wireless device 802 may be accomplished according to precoding (or digital beamforming) that is applied at the wireless device 802 that multiplexes the data streams across the antenna (s) 812 according to known or assumed channel characteristics such that each data stream is received with an appropriate signal strength relative to other streams and at a desired location in the spatial domain (e.g., the location of a receiver associated with that data stream) . Some embodiments may use single user MIMO (SU-MIMO) methods (where the data streams are all directed to a single receiver) and / or multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) methods (where individual data streams may be directed to individual (different) receivers in different locations in the spatial domain) .

[0102] In some embodiments having multiple antennas, the wireless device 802 may implement analog beamforming techniques, whereby phases of the signals sent by the antenna (s) 812 are relatively adjusted such that the (joint) transmission of the antenna (s) 812 can be directed (this is sometimes referred to as beam steering) .
