AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing wireless communication systems fail to define mechanisms for UEs to manage store-and-forward operations in non-terrestrial networks (NTN) effectively, particularly in scenarios where feeder or service links are temporarily unavailable, leading to increased power consumption and inefficiencies in mobile originated (MO) and mobile terminated (MT) data transmissions.

Method used

Implementing assistance information mechanisms for UEs and network nodes to adapt operations based on store-and-forward service conditions, including time instants and identities of involved network nodes and satellites, to optimize MO and MT data handling and reduce unnecessary signaling.

Benefits of technology

This approach reduces power consumption and improves link recovery times by enabling UEs to monitor reference signals and paging messages efficiently, thus enhancing data transmission in non-terrestrial networks.

Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS OF STORE AND FORWARD OPERATIONTechnical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to wireless communications, and in particular, to store-and-forward operation (s) in a wireless network.Background

[0002] The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has developed and is developing standards for Fourth Generation (4G) (also referred to as Long Term Evolution (LTE) ) and Fifth Generation (5G) (also referred to as New Radio (NR) ) wireless communication systems. Such systems provide, among other features, broadband communication between network nodes, such as base stations, and mobile user equipments (UE) , as well as communication between network nodes and between UEs. The 3GPP is also developing standards for Sixth Generation (6G) wireless communication networks.

[0003] A work item description (WID) : Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) for Internet of Things (IoT) Phase 3, RP-234077, was introduced in 3GPP Release (Rel) -19. One of the objectives is studying the support of store &forward (S&F or store-and-forward) ; the content is described as follows:

[0004] The aim of this work item (WI) is the enhancement of IoT-NTN with the following objectives:

[0005] ● Support of Store&Forward (S&F) satellite operation with full eNB as regenerative payload, therefore:

[0006] ○ Define the necessary enhancements into E-UTRAN (network and UE) to support S&F operation for delay-tolerant services [radio access network 3 (RAN3) , RAN2, RAN4]

[0007] ■ At least specify necessary enhancements, e.g., related to S1 protocol, especially to address the feeder link switch over as needed [RAN3]

[0008] Note: Strive to minimize UE impact.

[0009] Note: Coordination with 3GPP TSG (Technical Specification Group) SA (Service and System Aspects) WG2 (Working Group 2) (SA2) (Rel-19 SA2 led SatArch ph3 Study Item (SI) ) is needed on the detail requirements (e.g., traffic type, or Quality of Service (QoS) parameters for S&F) , network architecture (e.g., whether consider (partial) core network on satellite) etc. ; further coordination with 3GPP TSG CT (Core Network and Terminal) WG1 (CT1) might be required.

[0010] Regarding S&F operation, relying on regenerative payload, the satellite may temporarily lose the connection of feeder link connection and / or the service link connection. S&F operation may be applied during the time period for unavailable feeder link connection and / or service link connection respectively. The below are some examples of such S&F operation.

[0011] ● For Mobile Originated (MO) data, when the feeder link is unavailable and the service link is available, the satellite may store the uplink (UL) data in the data buffer and forward the UL data to the NTN gateway when the feeder link becomes available.

[0012] ○ The typical scenario and corresponding use case is illustrated in FIG. 1. In FIG. 1, at T0_1, the network node (on satellite) has a connection to the UE but no connection to the core network (CN) (e.g., gateway on ground) , the network node may receive and store (the network node has storage capability) UL data transmitted by the UE; at T0_2, the network node does not have connection to the UE (alternatively, still has connection to the UE) but has connection to the CN, the network node may forward, to the CN, the stored data received from the UE.

[0013] ● For Mobile Terminated (MT) data, when the feeder link is available and the service link is invalid, the satellite can store the DL data and later forward the DL data to UE when the service link is valid or the UE enters coverage.

[0014] ○ The typical scenario and corresponding use case is illustrated in FIG. 2. FIG. 2 is a diagram of an example scenario for MT data in S&F. In this scenario, a use case is that the CN may send the data for the UE to the network node at T1-1 and the network node stores the data in the data buffer and then forwards the data to the UE upon time T1_2, where, at T1_2, the network node is not connected to the CN (alternatively, the network node still has connection to the CN) . Given the known trajectory of the satellite, one of the benefits of the use case is that the CN may offload data in advance before losing the satellite connection. Another one of the benefits of the use case is the operation may abbreviate the latency of data transmission in case of discontinuous coverage, for example.Summary

[0015] Regarding MO data transmission, one issue is that in the case where the UE has no more uplink data and signalling to be transmitted to the S&F mode satellite, it is not clear whether the UE may continue to stay in the cell managed by the S&F mode satellite or may be changed to another cell that is not in S&F mode. Another issue is once the downlink data buffer is empty in the S&F mode satellite, the UE continues to camp on the cell managed by the S&F mode satellite and can expect not to receive any more downlink user data, and use certain pre-agreed time occasions to listen to paging messages which are no longer useful once the user data buffer is empty in a satellite.

[0016] Regarding MT data transmission, one issue is that the UE shall know at least when the service link is unavailable, and when to start receiving the reference signal and the paging after service link recovering from the unavailable status.

[0017] Hence, there are at least the above issues with existing systems and / or solutions and they fail to define mechanisms for solving these issues.

[0018] Some embodiments advantageously provide improved methods, systems, and apparatuses for store-and-forward operation (s) in a wireless network to solve at least one of the issues above.

[0052] Note further, that functions described herein as being performed by a user equipment or a network node may be distributed over a plurality of user equipments and / or network nodes. In other words, it is contemplated that the functions of the network node and user equipment described herein are not limited to performance by a single physical device and, in fact, can be distributed among several physical devices.

[0053] Unless otherwise defined, all terms (including technical and scientific terms) used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which this disclosure belongs. It will be further understood that terms used herein should be interpreted as having a meaning that is consistent with their meaning in the context of this specification and the relevant art and will not be interpreted in an idealized or overly formal sense unless expressly so defined herein.

[0054] A general procedure with non-concurrent service link and feeder link transmission is represented by at least the below steps with respect to 3GPP agreements in the next clause.

[0055] From T0_1 to T0_2,

[0056] ● The UE sends MO uplink data signaling to the network node when the service link is available (feeder link is unavailable) , and the network node stores the MO uplink data.

[0057] ● When a feeder link is available, the network node sends the MO uplink data / NAS (Non-Access Stratum) signalling to the CN.

[0058] From T1_1 to T1_2,

[0059] ● The network node (same or different) receives the MT downlink data / NAS signalling from the CN and stores it when a feeder link is available (service link is not available) .

[0060] ● The network node (same or different) sends the MT downlink data / signalling to the UE when the service link is available again.

[0061] In one example, the procedure from T0_1 to T0_2 and the procedure from T1_1 to T1_2 may occur independently, e.g., there are concurrent feeder link and service link connections between each other.

[0062] In another example, the procedure from T0_1 to T0_2 and the procedure from T1_1 to T1_2 may occur subsequently, e.g., T1_1 is immediately after T0_2, or there is a short time interval between TO_2 and T1_1.

[0063] FIG. 3 is a diagram of example time instants for store-and-forward.

[0064] 3GPP agreements

[0065] In RAN2#126 meetings, the agreements below were reached.

[0066] In RAN2#127 meetings, the agreements below were reached.

[0067] The procedure of access is different between MT data and MO data transmission.

[0068] For MO data transmission, UEs need to perform a random access procedure for RRC connection establishment or resumption. Since the service link is not always available, the UE needs to know the time window for Random Access Channel (RACH) .

[0069] For MT data transmission, network (NW) could page UEs to access. According to 3GPP TS 36.304, Paging Frame (PF) and Paging Occasions (POs) are calculated mainly by UE_ID and DRX cycle time.

[0070] However, monitoring paging for S&F satellites should consider whether the service link is available.

[0071] Even if it is clear that the UE is able to send MO uplink data and signalling to the satellite or receive MT downlink data and signaling from the satellite by S&F service, there are more details not specified. According to existing technology, a UE connected or camping in a cell needs to perform a series of procedures based on the premise of concurrent connection between the service and feeder link. These procedures may be suboptimal when the serving satellite operates in S&F mode and could lead to increased power consumption.

[0072] As mentioned above, regarding MO data transmission, one issue is that in the case where the UE has no more uplink data and signalling to be transmitted to the S&F mode satellite, the UE may continue to stay in the cell managed by the S&F mode satellite or may be changed to another cell that is not in S&F mode. Another issue is once the downlink data buffer is empty in the S&F mode satellite, the UE continues to camp on the cell managed by the S&F mode satellite and can expect not to receive any more downlink user data, and use certain pre-agreed time occasions to listen to paging messages which are no longer useful once the user data buffer is depleted in a satellite.

[0073] As also mentioned above, regarding MT data transmission, one issue is that the UE does not know when the service link is unavailable, and when to start receiving the reference signal and the paging after service link recovering from the unavailable status.

[0074] Hence, there are at least the above issues with existing systems and / or solutions and they fail to define mechanisms for solving these issues.

[0075] Some embodiments are directed to store-and-forward operation (s) in a wireless network.

[0076] Referring to the drawing figures, in which like elements are referred to by like reference numerals, there is shown in FIG. 4 a schematic diagram of a communication system 10, according to an embodiment, such as a 3GPP-type cellular network that may support standards such as LTE and / or NR (5G) and / or 6G, which comprises an access network 12, such as a radio access network, and a core network 14 comprising at least one core network entity 15. The access network 12 comprises a plurality of network nodes 16a, 16b, 16c (referred to collectively as network nodes 16) , such as NBs, eNBs, gNBs or other types of wireless access points, each defining a corresponding coverage area 18a, 18b, 18c (referred to collectively as coverage areas 18) . Each network node 16a, 16b, 16c is connectable to the core network 14 over a wired or wireless connection 20. A first user equipment (UE) 22a located in coverage area 18a is configured to wirelessly connect to, or be paged by, the corresponding network node 16a. A second UE 22b in coverage area 18b is wirelessly connectable to the corresponding network node 16b. While a plurality of UEs 22a, 22b (collectively referred to as user equipments 22) are illustrated in this example, the disclosed embodiments are equally applicable to a situation where a sole UE is in the coverage area or where a sole UE is connecting to the corresponding network node 16. Note that although only two UEs 22 and three network nodes 16 are shown for convenience, the communication system may include many more UEs 22 and network nodes 16.

[0077] Also, it is contemplated that a UE 22 can be in simultaneous communication and / or configured to separately communicate with more than one network node 16 and more than one type of network node 16. For example, a UE 22 can have dual connectivity with a network node 16 that supports LTE, NR and / or 6G and the same or a different network node 16 that supports NR. As an example, UE 22 can be in communication with an eNB for LTE / E-UTRAN and a gNB for NR / NG-RAN or 6G. Further, core network (CN) entity 15 may be configured to communicate with network node 16 and with UE 22 (via network node 16) .

[0078] A network node 16 (eNB or gNB) is configured to include a node service unit 24 which is configured to perform one or more network node 16 functions described herein. A UE 22 is configured to include a UE service unit 26 which is configured to perform one or more UE 22 functions described herein. A CN entity 15 is configured to include a core service unit 26 which is configured to perform one or more CN entity 15 functions described herein.

[0079] Example implementations, in accordance with an embodiment, of the UE 22, network node 16, and CN entity 15 discussed in the preceding paragraphs will now be described with reference to FIG. 5.

[0080] The communication system 10 includes a network node 16 provided in a communication system 10 and including hardware 29 enabling it to communicate with the UE 22. The hardware 29 may include a communication interface 30 for setting up and maintaining at least a wireless connection 32 with a UE 22 located in a coverage area 18 served by the network node 16. For example, communication interface 30 may include a radio interface that may be formed as or may include, for example, one or more RF transmitters, one or more RF receivers, and / or one or more RF transceivers. The radio interface includes an array of antennas 34 to radiate and receive signal (s) carrying electromagnetic waves. Further, communication interface 30 may be configured to communicate with CN entity 15 over connection 33 via an interface different from the radio interface, for example.

[0081] In the embodiment shown, the hardware 29 of the network node 16 further includes processing circuitry 36. The processing circuitry 36 may include a processor 38 and a memory 40. In particular, in addition to or instead of a processor, such as a central processing unit, and memory, the processing circuitry 36 may comprise integrated circuitry for processing and / or control, e.g., one or more processors and / or processor cores and / or FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array) and / or ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuitry) adapted to execute instructions. The processor 38 may be configured to access (e.g., write to and / or read from) the memory 40, which may comprise any kind of volatile and / or nonvolatile memory, e.g., cache and / or buffer memory and / or RAM (Random Access Memory) and / or ROM (Read-Only Memory) and / or optical memory and / or EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) .

[0082] Thus, the network node 16 further has software 42 stored internally in, for example, memory 40, or stored in external memory (e.g., database, storage array, network storage device, etc. ) accessible by the network node 16 via an external connection. The software 42 may be executable by the processing circuitry 36. The processing circuitry 36 may be configured to control any of the methods and / or processes described herein and / or to cause such methods and / or processes to be performed, e.g., by network node 16. Processor 38 corresponds to one or more processors 38 for performing network node 16 functions described herein. The memory 40 is configured to store data, programmatic software code, and / or other information described herein. In some embodiments, the software 42 may include instructions that, when executed by the processor 38 and / or processing circuitry 36, causes the processor 38 and / or processing circuitry 36 to perform the processes described herein with respect to network node 16. For example, processing circuitry 36 of the network node 16 may include node service unit 24 which is configured to perform one or more network node 16 functions as described herein.

[0083] The communication system 10 further includes the UE 22 already referred to. The UE 22 may have hardware 44 that may include a radio interface 46 configured to set up and maintain a wireless connection 32 with a network node 16 serving a coverage area 18 in which the UE 22 is currently located. The radio interface 46 may be formed as or may include, for example, one or more RF transmitters, one or more RF receivers, and / or one or more RF transceivers. The radio interface 46 includes an array of antennas 48 to radiate and receive signal (s) carrying electromagnetic waves.

[0084] The hardware 44 of the UE 22 further includes processing circuitry 50. The processing circuitry 50 may include a processor 52 and memory 54. In particular, in addition to or instead of a processor, such as a central processing unit, and memory, the processing circuitry 50 may comprise integrated circuitry for processing and / or control, e.g., one or more processors and / or processor cores and / or FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array) and / or ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuitry) adapted to execute instructions. The processor 52 may be configured to access (e.g., write to and / or read from) memory 54, which may comprise any kind of volatile and / or nonvolatile memory, e.g., cache and / or buffer memory and / or RAM (Random Access Memory) and / or ROM (Read-Only Memory) and / or optical memory and / or EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) .

[0085] Thus, the UE 22 may further comprise software 56, which is stored in, for example, memory 54 at the UE 22, or stored in external memory (e.g., database, storage array, network storage device, etc. ) accessible by the UE 22. The software 56 may be executable by the processing circuitry 50. The software 56 may include a client application 58. The client application 58 may be operable to provide a service to a human or non-human user via the UE 22.

[0086] The processing circuitry 50 may be configured to control any of the methods and / or processes described herein and / or to cause such methods, and / or processes to be performed, e.g., by UE 22. The processor 52 corresponds to one or more processors 52 for performing UE 22 functions described herein. The UE 22 includes memory 54 that is configured to store data, programmatic software code, and / or other information described herein. In some embodiments, the software 56 and / or the client application 58 may include instructions that, when executed by the processor 52 and / or processing circuitry 50, causes the processor 52 and / or processing circuitry 50 to perform the processes described herein with respect to UE 22. For example, the processing circuitry 50 of the user equipment 22 may include UE service unit 26 which is configured to perform one or more UE 22 functions described herein.

[0087] The communication system 10 further includes CN entity 15 already referred to. The CN entity 15 may have hardware 61 that may include a communication interface 62 configured to set up and maintain a connection 33 with one or more network nodes 16 and / or one or more other CN entities 15.

[0088] The hardware 61 of the CN entity 15 further includes processing circuitry 64. The processing circuitry 64 may include a processor 66 and memory 68. In particular, in addition to or instead of a processor, such as a central processing unit, and memory, the processing circuitry 64 may comprise integrated circuitry for processing and / or control, e.g., one or more processors and / or processor cores and / or FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array) and / or ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuitry) adapted to execute instructions. The processor 66 may be configured to access (e.g., write to and / or read from) memory 68, which may comprise any kind of volatile and / or nonvolatile memory, e.g., cache and / or buffer memory and / or RAM (Random Access Memory) and / or ROM (Read-Only Memory) and / or optical memory and / or EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) .

[0089] Thus, the CN entity 15 may further comprise software 60, which is stored in, for example, memory 68 at the CN entity 15, or stored in external memory (e.g., database, storage array, network storage device, etc. ) accessible by the CN entity 15. The software 60 may be executable by the processing circuitry 64.

[0090] The processing circuitry 64 may be configured to control any of the methods and / or processes described herein and / or to cause such methods, and / or processes to be performed, e.g., by CN entity 15. The processor 66 corresponds to one or more processors 66 for performing CN entity 15 functions described herein. The CN entity 15 includes memory 68 that is configured to store data, programmatic software code, and / or other information described herein. In some embodiments, the software 60 may include instructions that, when executed by the processor 66 and / or processing circuitry 64, causes the processor 66 and / or processing circuitry 64 to perform the processes described herein with respect to CN entity 15. For example, the processing circuitry 64 of the CN entity 15 may include core service unit 28 which is configured to perform one or more CN entity 15 functions described herein.

[0091] In some embodiments, the inner workings of the network node 16, UE 22, and CN entity 15 may be as shown in FIG. 5 and independently, the surrounding network topology may be that of FIG. 4.

[0092] The wireless connection 32 between the UE 22 and the network node 16 is in accordance with the teachings of the embodiments described throughout this disclosure. More precisely, the teachings of some of these embodiments may improve the data rate, latency, and / or power consumption and thereby provide benefits such as reduced user waiting time, relaxed restriction on file size, better responsiveness, extended battery lifetime, etc. In some embodiments, a measurement procedure may be provided for the purpose of monitoring data rate, latency, and other factors on which the one or more embodiments improve. The connection 33 between the CN entity 15 and the network node 16 is in accordance with the teachings of the embodiments described throughout this disclosure.

[0110] For example, in some embodiments, the telecommunication system 10 includes one or more Open-RAN (ORAN) network nodes 16. An ORAN network node 16 is a node in the telecommunication system 10 that supports an ORAN specification (e.g., a specification published by the O-RAN Alliance, or any similar organization) and may operate alone or together with other nodes to implement one or more functionalities of any node in the telecommunication system 10, including one or more network nodes 16 in the access network 12 and / or core network nodes 14.

[0111] Examples of an ORAN network node 16 include an open radio unit (O-RU) , an open distributed unit (O-DU) , an open central unit (O-CU) , including an O-CU control plane (O-CU-CP) or an O-CU user plane (O-CU-UP) , a RAN intelligent controller (near-real time or non-real time) hosting software or software plug-ins, such as a near-real time control application (e.g., xApp) or a non-real time control application (e.g., rApp) , or any combination thereof (the adjective “open” designating support of an ORAN specification) . The network node may support a specification by, for example, supporting an interface defined by the ORAN specification, such as an A1, F1, W1, E1, E2, X2, Xn interface, an open fronthaul user plane interface, or an open fronthaul management plane interface. Moreover, an ORAN access node may be a logical node in a physical node. Furthermore, an ORAN network node may be implemented in a virtualization environment (described further below) in which one or more network functions are virtualized. For example, the virtualization environment may include an O-Cloud computing platform orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an 0-2 interface defined by the ORAN Alliance or comparable technologies. The network nodes 16 facilitate direct or indirect connection of user equipment (UE) , such as by connecting UEs 22a and 22b (one or more of which may be generally referred to as UEs 22) to the core network 14 over one or more wireless connections.

[0112] FIG. 10 is a block diagram illustrating a virtualization environment 94 in which functions implemented by some embodiments may be virtualized. In the present context, virtualizing means creating virtual versions of apparatuses or devices which may include virtualizing hardware platforms, storage devices, and networking resources. As used herein, virtualization can be applied to any device described herein, or components thereof, and relates to an implementation in which at least a portion of the functionality is implemented as one or more virtual components. Some or all of the functions described herein may be implemented as virtual components executed by one or more virtual machines (VMs) implemented in one or more virtual environments 94 hosted by one or more of hardware nodes, such as a hardware computing device that operates as a network node, UE, core network node, or host. Further, in embodiments in which the virtual node does not require radio connectivity (e.g., a core network node or host) , then the node may be entirely virtualized. In some embodiments, the virtualization environment 94 includes components defined by the O-RAN Alliance, such as an O-Cloud environment orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an 0-2 interface. Applications 96 (which may alternatively be called software instances, virtual appliances, network functions, virtual nodes, virtual network functions, etc. ) are run in the virtualization environment 94 to implement some of the features, functions, and / or benefits of some of the embodiments disclosed herein.

[0113] Hardware 98 includes processing circuitry, memory that stores software and / or instructions executable by hardware processing circuitry, and / or other hardware devices as described herein, such as a network interface, input / output interface, and so forth. Software may be executed by the processing circuitry to instantiate one or more virtualization layers 100 (also referred to as hypervisors or virtual machine monitors (VMMs) ) , provide VMs 102a and 102b (one or more of which may be generally referred to as VMs 102) , and / or perform any of the functions, features, and / or benefits described in relation with some embodiments described herein. The virtualization layer 100 may present a virtual operating platform that appears like networking hardware to the VMs 102.

[0114] The VMs 102 comprise virtual processing, virtual memory, virtual networking or interface and virtual storage, and may be run by a corresponding virtualization layer 100. Different embodiments of the instance of a virtual appliance 96 may be implemented on one or more of VMs 102, and the implementations may be made in different ways. Virtualization of the hardware is in some contexts referred to as network function virtualization (NFV) . NFV may be used to consolidate many network equipment types onto industry standard high volume server hardware, physical switches, and physical storage, which can be located in data centers, and customer premise equipment.

[0115] In the context of NFV, a VM 102 may be a software implementation of a physical machine that runs programs as if they were executing on a physical, non-virtualized machine. Each of the VMs 102, and that part of hardware 98 that executes that VM, be it hardware dedicated to that VM and / or hardware shared by that VM with others of the VMs, forms separate virtual network elements. Still in the context of NFV, a virtual network function is responsible for handling specific network functions that run in one or more VMs 102 on top of the hardware 98 and corresponds to the application 96.

[0116] Hardware 98 may be implemented in a standalone network node with generic or specific components. Hardware 98 may implement some functions via virtualization. Alternatively, hardware 98 may be part of a larger cluster of hardware (e.g. such as in a data center or CPE) where many hardware nodes work together and are managed via management and orchestration 104, which, among others, oversees lifecycle management of applications 96. In some embodiments, hardware 98 is coupled to one or more radio units that each include one or more transmitters and one or more receivers that may be coupled to one or more antennas. Radio units may communicate directly with other hardware nodes via one or more appropriate network interfaces and may be used in combination with the virtual components to provide a virtual node with radio capabilities, such as a radio access node or a base station. In some embodiments, some signaling can be provided with the use of a control system 106 which may alternatively be used for communication between hardware nodes and radio units.

[0117] Having described the general process flow of arrangements of the disclosure and having provided examples of hardware and software arrangements for implementing the processes and functions of the disclosure, the sections below provide details and examples of arrangements for store-and-forward operation (s) in a wireless network.

[0118] Some embodiments provide store-and-forward operation (s) in a wireless network. One or more UE 22 functions described below may be performed by one or more of processing circuitry 50, memory 54, processor 52, UE service unit 26, radio interface 46, etc. One or more network node 16 functions described below may be performed by one or more of processing circuitry 36, processor 38, memory 40, communication interface 30, node service unit 24, etc. One or more CN entity 15 functions described below may be performed by one or more of processing circuitry 64, memory 68, processor 66, core service unit 28, communication interface 62, etc.

[0119] Embodiments at CN (e.g., CN entity 15)

[0121] In one or more embodiments, the CN determines the store-and-forward service with the network node 16 and / or the UE 22, including requesting the store-and-forward service to the network node 16 / UE 22 and starting the store-and-forward operation to the network node 16 / UE 22.

[0122] For serving the store-and-forward service, the CN (e.g., CN entity 15) may, in advance, signal the UE 22 the assistance information concerning the store-and-forward service where the assistance information comprises at least one of:

[0123] ● The identity of network node 16 / satellite / cell which provides the store-and-forward service to UE 22, e.g., cell ID, satellite ID, which may contain one or more than one:

[0124] ○ The identity of network node 16 / satellite / cell which is operating non-S&F mode, or

[0125] ○ The identity of network node 16 / satellite / cell which is to operate non-S&F mode after a time instant, e.g.,

[0126] ■ after T0_2 or T1_2, or

[0127] ■ after T0_1 or T1_1, or

[0128] ■ after a newly introduced given time instant, T_start, it may be between T0_1 and T0_2 or T1_1 and T1_2, or T_start =T0_2 or T1_2.

[0129] ● The frequency layer operated by network node 16 / satellite / cell

[0130] ● The time duration of store-and-forward service (due to no available feeder link) to UE 22, e.g., T0_1 and / or T0_2.

[0166] ● The frequency layer operated by network node 16 / satellite / cell.

[0167] ● The time duration of store-and-forward service (due to no available feeder link) to UE 22, e.g., T0_1 and / or T0_2.

[0168] ● The time duration of store-and-forward service (due to no available service link) to UE 22, e.g., T1_1 and / or T1_2.

[0169] In one embodiment, before or during the time period that the feeder link is unavailable, before T0_1 or during T0_1 to T0_2, network node 16 signals UE 22 by system information or paging or other signaling indicating that the data packet associated with the store-and-forward service is ready to be provided, e.g., which may be started from T0_1 to T0_2. Additionally, the indication may, by extension, indicate that the data to be transmitted is associated with the store-and-forward service.

[0170] In a similar manner, in one embodiment, before the time period that the service link is unavailable, e.g., before T1_1, network node 16 signals UE 22 by system information or paging or other signaling indicating that the data packet associated with the store-and-forward service is ready to be provided, after network node 16 moves to the coverage of (or is able to wirelessly reach) UE 22 with respect to the ephemeris associated with network node 16 and UE 22 positions and the estimated time period of transmitting the data packet for UE 22 from network node 16 involved in the store-and-forward service to UE 22, e.g., which may be started from T1_2. Additionally, the indication may, by extension, indicate that the data to be transmitted is associated with the store-and-forward service.

[0171] Embodiments at UE 22

[0172] In one or more embodiments, UE 22 may be aware of a store-and-forward service as indicated by the CN 14 before a store-and-forward service is initiated by the CN, which may include acquiring assistance information of store-and-forward service from the CN and / or network node 16 as follows:

[0173] ● The identity of network node 16 / satellite / cell which provides the store-and-forward service to UE 22, e.g., cell ID, satellite ID, which may contain one or more than one:

[0174] ○ The identity of network node 16 / satellite / cell which is operating non-S&F mode, or

[0175] ○ The identity of network node 16 / satellite / cell which is to operate non-S&F mode after a time instant, e.g., after T0_2 or T1_2, or after T0_1 or T1_1, or after a newly introduced given time instant, T_start, it may be between T0_1 and T0_2 or T1_1 and T1_2.

[0176] ● The frequency layer operated by network node 16 / satellite / cell.

[0177] ● The time duration of store-and-forward service (no available feeder link) to UE 22, e.g., T0_1 and / or T0_2.

[0178] ● The time duration of store-and-forward service (no available service link) to UE 22, e.g., T1_1 and / or T1_2.

[0179] In some embodiments, before the CN 14 provides data packet for UE 22 associated with a store-and-forward service to network node 16, and before UE 22 loses the connection to network node 16, to enable store-and-forward service, the CN 14 or network node 16 (or other network nodes 16) may provide UE 22 with the assistance information of store-and-forward service, otherwise, UE 22 may reject the store-and-forward service, e.g., reject receiving the data packet.

[0180] In some embodiments, during the time period that the feeder link is unavailable, depending on if there is MO data to be transmitted to network node 16 by the store-and-forward service, UE 22 may conduct one or more of the below procedures:

[0181] ● During T0_1 and T0_2, to enable transmitting MO data with the store-and-forward service to network node 16, UE 22 maintains certain state (e.g., RRC state, for example, UE 22 remains in RRC_CONNECTED or RRC_INACTIVE under which UE 22 can transmit data to network node 16. In case UE 22 is in RRC_INACTIVE, UE 22 can apply an SDT procedure to transmit data to network node 16) until completing transmission. After that, UE 22 may be released and monitor paging until the end of the store-and-forward mode.

[0182] ● If no MO data (or no more MO data) is available, UE 22 may maintain a certain state (e.g., RRC state, for example, where UE 22 remains in RRC_IDLE state) and monitor paging until the end of the store-and-forward mode.

[0183] ○ In one example, UE 22 may stop monitoring paging if no paging is received for a time period after T0_1, and start or resume paging until T0_2 with respect to the assistance information.

[0184] ○ In another example, UE 22 may relax the measurement on the serving cell until T0_2. For example, UE 22 may “relax” the measurement by performing fewer demanding measurements, performing different measurements, and / or performing less of one or more measurements.

[0185] ● Alternatively, if no MO data (or no more MO data) is available, UE 22 may perform the S&F based cell selection or cell reselection to camp on another network node 16 / satellite / cell which are in non-S&F mode with respect to the frequency layer and / or satellite ID indicated by the assistance information.

[0186] ○ UE 22 may start, from the time instant when no MO data is available, to perform cell selection or cell reselection to camp on another network node 16 / satellite / cell which are in non-S&F mode with respect to the frequency layer and / or satellite ID indicated by the assistance information.

[0187] ○ Alternatively, UE 22 may start from T0_2 to perform cell selection or cell reselection to camp on another network node 16 / satellite / cell which are in non-S&F mode with respect to the frequency layer and / or satellite ID indicated by the assistance information.

[0188] ○ In case UE 22 is unable to find any available network node 16 / satellite / cell which are in non-S&F mode, UE 22 may execute cell selection or cell reselection to all frequency layers that UE 22 supports.

[0189] In one or more embodiments, during the time period that the service link is unavailable, to enable receiving MT associated with the store-and-forward service from network node 16, once network node 16 connects or resumes connection to the UE,

[0190] ● UE 22 maintains a certain state (also referred to as operational state) (e.g., RRC state, for example, UE 22 remains in RRC_CONNECTED or RRC_INACTIVE in which UE 22 can receive data from network node 16) and is ready for reception of the data packet after service link is resumed.

[0191] ● UE 22 may initiate a process to detect network node 16 by measuring reference signals and monitor paging, before or upon or after network node 16 moves to the coverage (or moves within wireless range of UE 22) , started between T1_1 to T1_2 or from T1_2.

[0192] ● UE 22 may initiate a request to the CN 14 and / or network node 16 to request the stored data packet associated with the store-and-forward service by network node 16 by RACH or other signaling, before or upon or after network node 16 moves to the coverage, started between T1_1 to T1_2 or from T1_2.

[0193] In one or more embodiments, UE 22 may apply S&F based R criteria other than legacy / normal (e.g., default) R criteria for cell reselection from a S&F mode cell to a neighbor cell which may be in non-S&F mode or S&F mode.

[0194] As a reference, the legacy / normal R criteria is represented below:

[0195] The cell-ranking criterion Rs for serving cell and Rn for neighboring cells is defined by: Rs = Qmeas, s+Qhyst-Qoffsettemp Rn = Qmeas, n-Qoffset-Qoffsettemp

[0196] where:

[0197] The cells are ranked according to the R criteria specified above by deriving Qmeas, n and Qmeas, s and calculating the R values using averaged RSRP results. UE 22 performs cell reselection to the highest ranked cell.

[0198] In one or more embodiments, an example of the S&F based R criteria is represented below:

[0199] The cell-ranking criterion Rs for the serving cell and Rn for neighboring cells is defined by: Rs = Qmeas, s+Qhyst-Qoffsettemp-QoffsetSnF Rn = Qmeas, n-Qoffset-Qoffsettemp-QoffsetSnF

[0200] wherein an introduced parameter QoffsetSnF in Rs and Rn represents the bias for ranking the serving cell which enters S&F mode. The value of QoffsetSnF may be provided by a cell specific common signaling, e.g., broadcasted by SIB, which can be included in an existing SIB, e.g., SIB 1 or SIB2 by extension.

[0201] Alternatively, an introduced value offsetSnF concerning S&F mode, is used for the parameter Qoffsettemp. The value offsetSnF may be provided by a cell specific common signaling, e.g., broadcasted by SIB, which can be included in an existing SIB, e.g., SIB1 or SIB2 by extension.

[0202] In one example option, QoffsetSnF and / or offsetSnF are applied to Rs and / or Rn if the serving satellite and / or the neighbor satellite support S&F mode and S&F mode is enabled. In the case that both satellites support S&F mode, then QoffsetSnF and / or offsetSnF do not apply to the two satellites.

[0203] In another option, QoffsetSnF and / or offsetSnF are applied to Rs only if the serving satellite supports S&F mode and S&F mode is enabled and regardless of the S&F mode of the neighbor satellite. And, QoffsetSnF and / or offsetSnF are not applied to Rs.

[0204] In another option, QoffsetSnF and / or offsetSnF are applied to Rn only if the neighbor satellite supports S&F mode and S&F mode is enabled. In another embodiment, UE 22, upon receiving the indication, performs one or more of intra-frequency, inter-frequency, or inter-RAT measurements, regardless of the distance between UE 22 and the serving cell reference location or whether the serving cell fulfils Srxlev > SIntraSearchP and Squal > SIntraSearchQ, or Srxlev > SnonIntraSearchP and Squal > SnonIntraSearchQ, before the t-Service if applicable.

[0205] In another embodiment, a UE, upon receiving the indication, performs measurements on one or more of inter-frequency or inter-RAT layers of higher priority, regardless of the distance between UE 22 and the serving cell reference location or whether the serving cell fulfils Srxlev >SIntraSearchP and Squal > SIntraSearchQ, before the t-Service if applicable. The higher priority may be the frequency layers and / or satellite IDs indicated by the assistance information.

[0206] One or more embodiments described herein provide a unified solution covering the MO scenario and the MT scenario with respect to a set of time instants indicating S&F duration for MO and MT, respectively. One or more embodiments described herein advantageously save UE power by avoiding unnecessary signaling overhead. For example:

[0207] ● For the case of no connection between a satellite (e.g., network node 16) and ground gateway (e.g., CN 14) , UE 22 may conduct some operations for MO data with respect to the time window for MO, e.g., changing cell, one or more of starting, stopping, suspending and / or resuming measurement, and monitoring paging.

[0208] ● For the case of no connection between a satellite (e.g., network node 16) and UE 22, UE 22 may conduct some operations for MT data with respect to the time window tor MT, e.g., changing cell, one or more or starting, stopping, suspending and / or resuming measurement, and monitoring paging.

[0209] One or more embodiments described herein provide a method in a user equipment (UE 22) comprising one or more of the following:

[0210] 1. Receiving assistance information concerning the store-and-forward service.

[0211] ● The identity of the network node 16 / satellite / cell which provides the store-and-forward service to the UE 22, e.g., cell ID, satellite ID, which may contain one or more than one.

[0212] ● The frequency layer operated by the network node 16 / satellite / cell.

[0213] ● The time duration of store-and-forward service (due to no available feeder link) to the UE 22.
