AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing encoding and decoding methods for three-dimensional meshes are inefficient and require improvements to reduce unnecessary information transmission and simplify analysis processes.

Method used

A method where flags and threshold values for edge subdivision are symbolized or decoded based on edge length comparisons in bit streams, allowing for controlled and efficient encoding and decoding of three-dimensional meshes by indicating whether edge subdivision is needed and specifying the threshold for each layer.

🎯Benefits of technology

This approach reduces unnecessary information encoding, simplifies bitstream analysis, and maintains consistency across hierarchies, enhancing encoding and decoding efficiency and stability.

Abstract

This encoding method is executed by an encoding device (2500), wherein: if a first flag indicates that edge sub-division to be applied to a first three-dimensional mesh of a first hierarchical layer is to be executed (Yes in S2541), a second flag indicating whether or not edge sub-division to be applied to a second three-dimensional mesh of a second hierarchical layer lower than the first hierarchical layer is to be executed is encoded into a bit stream (S2542); if the second flag indicates that edge sub-division to be applied to the second three-dimensional mesh is to be executed (Yes in S2543), a threshold used for the edge sub-division to be applied to the second three-dimensional mesh is encoded into a bit stream (S2544); and the edge sub-division is executed by comparing the edge length of an edge included in the three-dimensional mesh to be processed and the threshold used for the edge sub-division.
