AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing door locking mechanisms, such as barrel bolts and Cremone bolts, are prone to breakage and lack security, especially in applications like Dutch doors and barn doors, which require improved structural strength and security.

Method used

A latch system with a bolt that can pivot and translate within a guide, featuring multiple operative positions to securely lock or unlock separable door parts, providing enhanced stability and security through a bolt that is as long as, or longer than, the door parts, and incorporates a handle or lever to control the bolt's movement.

🎯Benefits of technology

The latch system provides improved structural strength and security by ensuring the bolt's length matches or exceeds the door parts, allowing secure locking and unlocking, enhancing resistance to forced entry and wear.

Abstract

A latch (10, 1010) for a barrier (20, 1020) having first and second separable parts (21, 22, 1021, 1022). The latch has a bolt (14, 1014) having longitudinal axis (40) and located within a guide (12) so as to be capable of being displaced in direction of its longitudinal axis (40) within the guide (12). A handle (142, 1142) extends from the bolt (14, 1014) for moving the bolt within the guide and a lug (15, 1015) for locking the bolt within the guide. At least a first and a second recess (125, 126) receives one of the handle and lug therein, creating first and second operative positions of the bolt. The bolt locks the first barrier part to an upper or lower structure adjacent to the first barrier part, and the bolt locks the first and second barrier parts together.
