Time-coordinated address rotation

Abstract

Devices, networks, systems, methods, and procedures for rotating media access control (MAC) addresses of devices. A device can negotiate a periodicity for address rotation of a MAC address associated with the device. The device can receive a data frame and generate seed data based on the data frame. The device can also generate the seed data utilizing a shared secret key, a cryptographic hash function, and / or a cryptographically secure pseudo-random number generator. The device can determine timestamp data based on the periodicity or a time of receipt of the data frame. The device can determine a MAC address based on the timestamp data and the seed data utilizing a pseudo-random function. The device can generate the MAC address after each rotation period. Upon waking from a power saving mode, the device can synchronize with a network device to generate a next MAC address.
