Abstract
Description
Description Title of the invention: AIR FREIGHT PALLET SYSTEM WITH REMOVABLE LASHING RAILS AND METHOD FOR DISMANTLING A LASHING RAIL
[0001] FIELD OF INVENTION
[0002] The present invention relates generally to pallet systems for air transport, more specifically to systems enabling the mounting and dismounting of lashing rails on support profiles.
[0003] EARLIER ART
[0004] Lashing rails are subject to damage due to frequent and heavy use and repeated handling. Pallets can also warp over time, further complicating rail replacement over long sections.
[0005] Regularly replacing damaged parts complicates the maintenance process, which is expensive and time-consuming.
[0006] The prior art, particularly document WO2023277435, describes a freight pallet with several detachable parts. However, the solution proposed in WO2023277435 requires removing a damaged lashing rail by first removing a corner piece and each lashing rail between that corner piece and the damaged rail, in order to extract the damaged rail from the support profile. Having to remove a corner piece and potentially one or more adjacent lashing rails before the damaged rail can be removed is a lengthy and tedious process.
[0007] The present invention aims to propose a new system and corresponding method to overcome at least partially one or more of the problems described above.
[0008] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0009] To this end, the invention relates to an air freight pallet system comprising: - a base plate on which objects can be placed, said base plate having four sides opposite each other in pairs, - for each side of the base plate, a fixed support profile extending along said side of the base plate, - four corners, each connecting one of the support profiles to a neighboring support profile; - for each support profile, several lashing rails mounted on said support profile, - for each lashing rail, a system for holding the lashing rail in relation to the support profile; characterized in that each lashing rail and the corresponding support profile are configured so that, after removal of the retaining system, the lashing rail can be removed from the support profile, without removal of a corner or another lashing rail, according to a so-called lateral displacement, which includes at least one translation of the lashing rail perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the support profile, and parallel to the plate.
[0010] This design of the air freight pallet system, in which the lashing rails can be mounted and dismounted laterally—that is, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the support profile—simplifies the replacement process. Indeed, this design allows a lashing rail to be replaced without having to remove a corner or adjacent rails, unlike the prior art which involves the longitudinal removal of a corner and one or more neighboring lashing rails.
[0011] The solution according to the invention thus reduces the costs associated with the maintenance of air freight pallets.
[0012] The system may also include one or more of the following features taken in any technically permissible combination.
[0013] According to one embodiment, the lashing rail includes a first insertion wing which extends along the lashing rail; and the support profile includes a first receiving groove for receiving the first insertion wing of the lashing rail.
[0014] According to one embodiment, the lashing rail includes a second insertion wing which extends along the lashing rail, the second insertion wing being located at a lower height than the first wing (in the mounted state of the lashing rail on the support profile and with the system resting on a horizontal surface) and being laterally separated from the first insertion wing (i.e. separated in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the lashing rail and parallel to the plate); and the support profile includes a second receiving groove to receive the second insertion wing of the lashing rail.
[0015] According to one embodiment, the first receiving groove for receiving the first insertion wing of the lashing rail, and, when present, the second receiving groove for receiving the second insertion wing of the lashing rail, each have an opening opposite their bottom, which is directed (i.e., whose normal direction to the face of the groove opening extends) parallel to the plate, and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the support profile in the opposite direction from the inside of the plate.
[0016] In one particular configuration, the first groove has an opening face whose normal is directed in the opposite direction to the bottom of the first groove, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the support profile and parallel to the plate. Alternatively, the second groove can have an opening face whose normal is directed in the opposite direction to the bottom of the second groove, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the support profile and parallel to the plate.
[0017] According to one embodiment, the lashing rail comprising a plurality of first holes formed through the lashing rail, and the support profile comprising a plurality of second holes formed in the support profile, each of the first holes being superimposed on one of said second holes, the system for retaining the lashing rail vis-à-vis the support profile comprises washers each positioned: - in one of the aforementioned first openings made in the lashing rail, and - in the second corresponding opening made in the support profile that receives the lashing rail, the washer having a thickness greater than that of the second hole at bottom of which it rests so as to extend over at least part of the height of the first opening.
[0018] According to one embodiment, a third orifice, smaller in diameter than the second orifice, is provided through each second orifice and opens into a hollow part of the support profile, the system for retaining the lashing rail vis-à-vis the support profile includes rivets, each rivet extending through one of said washers and the third orifice.
[0019] The washer and rivet secure the rail to its support and primarily prevent translational movement. In another embodiment, where the rivet exhibits sufficient shear strength relative to the desired value, the washer can be omitted.
[0020] According to one embodiment, the lashing rail comprising a plurality of first holes formed through the lashing rail, and the support profile comprising a plurality of second holes formed through the support profile, each of the first holes being superimposed on one of said second holes, the system for retaining the lashing rail vis-à-vis the support profile comprises rivets positioned each: - in one of the aforementioned first openings made in the lashing rail, and - in the second corresponding opening made in the support profile that receives the lashing rail, the rivet extending through said first orifice and said second orifice.
[0021] The system for securing the lashing rail to the support profile can be implemented in different ways.
[0022] In one embodiment, the lashing rail comprises a longitudinal groove (for example, C-shaped) open at the top and configured to receive cargo net fastening elements, called pins, the first holes formed in the lashing rail being provided through the bottom face of the groove of the lashing rail. The pins may be single (ISO 7166) or double (ISO 9788).
[0023] According to one embodiment, the upper face of the washer is flush with the bottom face of the groove in which the first orifices are formed.
[0024] According to one embodiment, the support profile includes a raised longitudinal edge laterally away from the groove, to limit the translation of the lashing rail outwards, (reducing the risk of loss of parts), and said lateral displacement which allows the dismantling of the lashing rail relative to the support profile, without removal of a corner or another lashing rail, includes, after the translation of the lashing rail perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the support profile, and parallel to the plate, an upward displacement of the lashing rail.
[0025] According to one embodiment, each support profile includes a lip for fixing to the plate.
[0026] According to one embodiment, each support profile has a flat upper surface with which a flat lower surface of a lashing rail is in contact.
[0027] According to one embodiment, the support profile is connected to a neighboring support profile by a bracket whose arms are engaged in the neighboring support profiles, and by a wedge fixed to the bracket, allowing increased resistance to shocks and wear.
[0028] The washers help to improve shear strength and ensure the relative position of the support profile and each lashing rail mounted on the support profile.
[0029] The invention also relates to a method for dismantling a lashing rail of an air freight pallet system according to any one of the embodiments proposed above, the method comprising the following steps: - remove the securing system of the lashing rail from the support profile; - move the lashing rail relative to the support profile, in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the support profile and parallel to the base plate, possibly in combination with an upward movement of the lashing rail away from the support profile.
[0030] According to one embodiment, said movement of the lashing rail relative to the support profile results in the disengagement of the insertion wings of the lashing rail relative to the grooves of the support profile.
[0031] An air freight pallet system is also proposed, comprising: - a base plate on which objects can be placed, said base plate having four sides opposite each other in pairs, - for each side of the base plate, a fixed support profile extending along said side of the base plate, - four corners, each connecting one of the support profiles to a neighboring support profile; - for each support profile, several lashing rails mounted on said support profile, - for each lashing rail, a system for holding the lashing rail in relation to the support profile; characterized the lashing rail includes a first insertion wing which extends along the lashing rail; and the support profile includes a first receiving groove to receive the first insertion wing of the lashing rail; the first receiving groove having an opening opposite its bottom (bottom of the groove), which is directed (i.e. whose normal to the opening face extends) parallel to the plate, and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the support profile in the opposite direction from the inside of the plate; and in that each lashing rail and the corresponding support profile are configured so that, after removal of the retaining system, the lashing rail can be removed from the support profile, without removal of a corner or another lashing rail, according to a so-called lateral displacement, which includes at least one translation of the lashing rail perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the support profile, and parallel to the plate.

[0040] DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0041] Embodiments are described below with reference to the accompanying drawings. Similar numbers refer to similar features in all drawings. However, the invention can be implemented in many different forms and should not be construed as being limited to the embodiments shown here. The scope of the invention is defined by the accompanying claims.
[0042] A reference throughout the specification to "an embodiment" means that a particular feature, structure, or characteristic described in relation to an embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present invention. Thus, the appearance of the phrase "in an embodiment" in various places throughout the specification does not necessarily refer to the same embodiment. Furthermore, the particular features, structures, or characteristics may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments.
[0043] With reference to the figures, a system 1 for an air freight pallet is shown. System 1 comprises a base plate 10 on which objects, commonly called freight, can be placed. The plate 10 is preferably made of metal, for example, aluminum. The plate advantageously has one or more drainage holes. The plate 10 is rectangular. The plate 10 can be square, which is a special case of the rectangular shape.
[0044] A net (not shown) is used to secure the cargo (an object or set of objects) placed on plate 10 during air transport.
[0045] The air freight pallet system can be manufactured in different sizes, for example with dimensions of around 3 meters by 2.4 meters.
[0046] The base plate 10 has four sides arranged in pairs. A support profile 200 (or support profile) is fixed to and extends along each side of the plate 10. The support profile 200 has a longitudinal axis A200. It can be assumed that the support profile 200 comprises several sections. As explained below, for each support profile, several lashing rails 300 (also called attachment rails) are mounted on said support profile. The lashing rails 300 are aligned with each other. The lashing rails 300 extend parallel to the support profile 200 on which they are mounted.
[0047] Support profile
[0048] According to one embodiment, the support profile 200 includes a fixing lip 210 which has a lower face in which a groove (not shown) is formed for cooperating with a rib extending along one side of the plate 10 to aid in positioning the support profile 200 on the plate 10. The plate 10 has a rib adapted to cooperate with a support profile 200 along each side of the plate 10. Once the support profile 200 is positioned along one side of the plate 10 with the holes formed through the lip 210 of the support profile 200 and the plate aligned, rivets (not shown) can be applied to hold the support profile 200 and the plate 10 together.
[0049] Each support profile 200 fixed along one side of the plate 10 can be connected to another support profile 200 fixed along an adjacent side of the plate 10 by a bracket 6 (see the area referenced B in Figure 1 corresponding to a The cutaway view of the system area shows bracket 6), one wing of which extends inside one of the support profiles 200 and the other inside the other support profile 200. The support profiles 200 are hollow. A corner element 5 connects the ends of adjacent support profiles 200, creating a zone resistant to impact and wear. The corners 5 of the pallet can be attached to the corresponding brackets, for example, by screwing.
[0050] The support profile 200 has a flat surface 231 (or flat) upper surface for receiving the lashing rail 300 in particular, against which a flat surface 331 (flat) lower surface of the lashing rail 300 is able to come into contact. The flat 231 is located at a height greater than the lip 210.
[0051] According to one embodiment, the support profile 200 also has another flat surface 235 (or flat) opposite which is located the lower face 336I of the insertion wing 336 (shown below) of the lashing rail 300 in the engaged state in the groove 236. The flat 235 is located at a height greater than the lip 210 but less than the flat 231 and is located on the side of the outer edge of the support profile 200 relative to the lip 210 which forms the inner edge of the support profile 200.
[0052] Lashing rail
[0053] The cargo net can be attached to the lashing rails, also called "seat racks" in English, using components commonly called "pins" (not shown). The pins can be single (ISO 7166) or double (ISO 9788).
[0054] These components are standardized quick-release fasteners that fit into a groove 338 in the lashing rail 300 (see, for example, Figures 2 and 4). Each lashing rail 300 is extruded and precision-milled to form recesses 338A in the upper part of the groove 338 for receiving the pins.
[0055] Viewed from above, the groove 338 shows that each of the recesses is generally circular and spaced apart along the groove, communicating with each other through the upper opening of the groove. The diameter of each recess is greater than the width of the groove opening to allow each pin (quick fastener) to be inserted into the groove through the upper opening of groove 338. Once inserted into the groove, each The pawn can be offset longitudinally to prevent removal from the top of the pawn.
[0056] The 300 lashing rail is designed to be mounted on the 200 support profile to ensure secure and modular attachment. The 200 support profile can accommodate multiple aligned 300 lashing rails.
[0057] The lashing rail 300 includes an insertion wing 333, which is said to be internal because it extends from the side of the support profile 200 oriented towards the inside of the system 1, i.e. towards the center of the plate 10.
[0058] This wing 333 engages in a groove 233 defined by a retaining element 234 of the support profile 200, thus preventing the lashing rail 300 from moving inwards towards the plate 10 and from moving upwards. The retaining element 234 extends outwards from the flat surface 231 of the support profile 200, forming an L shape to delimit said groove 233 with the flat surface 231.
[0059] In addition, the lashing rail 300 has a part 336, which is a branch of the outer dropped edge 337 folded towards the inner side of the lashing rail 300. This configuration defines a groove open laterally towards the inner side of the lashing rail 300. When mounting the lashing rail 300 on the support profile 200, the wing 237 of the support profile 200 engages in this groove, thus ensuring a stable and secure attachment.
[0060] In parallel, part 336 of the lashing rail 300 forms an insertion wing which engages in a groove 236 of the support profile as detailed below.
[0061] This design allows for efficient assembly and disassembly of the 300 lashing rail, facilitating maintenance and component replacement without interfering with adjacent 300 lashing rails and without having to remove a corner.
[0062] The upper longitudinal groove 338 has a generally C-shaped cross-section with its opening facing upwards. The upper longitudinal groove 338 of the lashing rail 300 is defined by portions of the lashing rail 300 that extend along and respectively on one side and the other of the longitudinal axis of the groove to form opposite flanks of the groove.
[0063] The longitudinal groove 338 is open upwards, i.e. in the opposite direction to the lower face 331 of the lashing rail 300 which is in contact with the face 231 of the support profile 200 in the fixed state of the lashing rail 300 on the support profile 200.
[0064] Several holes 332 are provided through the bottom 330 of the groove 338 of the lashing rail 300, spaced apart along the longitudinal axis of the groove 338. Corresponding holes 231A of the same diameter are provided in the flat 231 of the support profile 200, over a height less than the thickness of the flat 213, so as to allow the holes 332 to overlap with the holes 231A. Each pair of holes 332, 231A placed opposite each other is suitable for receiving a washer 4. The thickness of the washer 4 is preferably equal to the combined height of the pair of holes 332, 231A, so that the upper face of the washer 4 extends flush with the bottom 330 of the groove 338 of the lashing rail 300. The 4 washers help to improve shear strength.
[0065] The bottom of the orifice 231 A is itself pierced by an orifice 231 B which opens into the hollow body of the support profile 200. A rivet R32 is placed through the washer 4 and the orifice 231 B to fix the lashing rail 300 onto the support profile 200.
[0066] Superior retention of the support profile
[0067] The support profile 200 includes a part 234 which extends above the flat 231 and which defines a groove 233 for receiving the insertion wing 333, called the inner wing of the lashing rail 300. The wing 333 is called inner because in the fixed state of the lashing rail 300 on the support profile 200 it extends on the side of the support profile 200 which is oriented towards the inside of the system 1 (center of the plate 10). In other words, the insertion wing 333 is said to be internal because in the fixed state of the lashing rail 300 on the support profile 200 it is located with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the lashing rail 300 on the side oriented towards the inside of the system 1 (center of the plate 10).
[0068] Part 234 thus forms a retaining device which is configured to oppose movement of the lashing rail 300 towards the inside of the plate 10 (or towards the lip 210) and to oppose upward movement of the rail lashing 300, i.e. along a direction orthogonal to the plane of plate 10 in the direction of a move away from plate 10.
[0069] In particular, the groove 233 is defined by the retaining member 234, for example in the shape of an L rotated 90° clockwise as seen in Figure 5, with the flat 231. The groove 233 is open laterally towards the outside of the plate 10.
[0070] The plate 231 and the stop 234 define the two opposite edges of the groove 233 into which the wing 333 of the lashing rail 300 is designed to engage. The retaining member 234 has an L-shape rotated 90°, and one arm end is connected to the plate 231 so that the retaining member 234 extends beyond the plate 231 to define the groove 233.
[0071] Lower retention of the support profile
[0072] The support profile 200 includes a part 237 which extends above the flat 235 and which defines a groove 236 for the insertion of the wing 336 called the outer wing of the lashing rail 300. The wing 336 is called outer because in the fixed state of the lashing rail 300 on the support profile 200 it is located with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the lashing rail 300 on the side oriented towards the outside of the plate 10.
[0073] Retainer 237 is located closer to the outside side of support profile 200 than retainer 234.
[0074] The retaining member 237, together with the surface 235, defines a groove 236 open laterally towards the outside of the plate 10. The flat 235 and the stop 237 define the two opposite edges of the groove 236 into which the wing 336 is intended to engage. The retaining member 237 has an L-shape rotated 90°, one end of which is connected to the flat 235 such that the retaining member 237 extends beyond the flat 235 to define the groove 236. The other end of the L of the retaining member 237 is formed by a portion of the end of the flat 231.
[0075] According to one embodiment, the support profile 200 has a raised edge 239 or rib that projects from the flat 235 to the distance between the groove 236 and the outer side of the support profile 200. The raised edge 239 forms a stop that limits the outward lateral movement of the lashing rail 300. the detached state of the 300 lashing rail relative to the 200 support profile, to limit the risk of part loss.
[0076] The said insertion wing 333 (inner wing) engaged in the groove 233, defined by a retaining member 234 projecting from the support profile 200, and the said insertion wing 336 (outer wing) engaged in the groove 236 defined by the retaining member 237 of the support profile 200 ensures a stable and secure attachment by preventing lateral movement of the lashing rail 300 towards the inside of the base plate 10 and upward movement.
[0077] Each support profile 200 and each lashing rail 300 is a metal part, preferably extruded.
[0078] In a particular aspect, as illustrated for example in Figure 6, the first groove 233 has an opening face F233 whose normal D233 is directed in the opposite direction to the bottom of the first groove, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the support profile and parallel to the plate. Similarly, the second groove 236 has an opening face F236 whose normal D236 is directed in the opposite direction to the bottom of the second groove, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the support profile and parallel to the plate.
[0079] Insertion and removal of a lashing rail relative to a support profile
[0080] In order to dismantle a 300 lashing rail, the R32 rivets and 4 washers which hold the 300 lashing rail in position on the corresponding support profile 200 are removed (Figures 3 and 4).
[0081] The 300 tie-down rails, also called "seat racks" in English, are designed to be removed by a movement of the 300 tie-down rail comprising a so-called horizontal lateral movement relative to the support profile 200, i.e. in a direction orthogonal to the longitudinal axis A300 of the 300 tie-down rail and parallel to the plate in the opposite direction from the center of the plate (i.e. outwards or in the direction of a separation from the plate).
[0082] Lateral movement allows the insertion wings 333, 336 to be moved laterally out of the lashing rail 300 of the grooves 233, 236 support profile 200 (Figure 5).
[0083] When the support profile 200 includes a raised lip 239 forming a stop, preventing the separation of the lashing rail 300 from the support profile 200 from continuing the horizontal lateral movement, the operator can remove the lashing rail 300 from the support profile 200 by moving said lashing rail 300 upwards, i.e. in the direction H300 opposite to the support profile 200, either vertically or in an inclined direction (i.e. a direction which has at least one vertical component in the direction of a separation of the lashing rail 300 from the support profile 200), as illustrated for example in Figure 6.
[0084] Figure 6 illustrates a translational movement, but an upward pivoting movement can also be performed to allow the support profile 200 to escape the stop 239. In the absence of a stop 239, the horizontal lateral displacement can be carried out until the lashing rail 300 is completely withdrawn from the support profile 200.
[0085] This design allows a 300 tie-down rail to be replaced without having to remove adjacent tie-down rails and without having to remove any corners.
[0086] Inserting a 300 lashing rail onto a 200 support profile, for example between two 300 lashing rails remaining on the support profile, can be done by repeating the steps shown above in reverse and using new rivets.
[0087] The modular design of the 300 rails facilitates repairs and the replacement of damaged sections. The 200 support profiles are themselves removable from the 10 plate.
[0088] Such a configuration of the pallet system allows simplified replacement of the lashing rails without removing the adjacent rails and in particular without having to remove a corner and longitudinally extract one or more lashing rails adjacent to the one that one wishes to dismantle.
[0089] The invention is not limited to the embodiments illustrated in the drawings.
[0090] Furthermore, the term "including" does not exclude other elements or steps. Furthermore, features or steps that have been described with reference to one of the embodiments set out above may also be used in combination with other features or steps of other embodiments described above.
