FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The disclosure relates to the field of photoprotective cosmetic or dermatological compositions. More particularly, the disclosure relates to the field of photoprotective cosmetic compositions comprising at least one chemical sunscreen, a sunscreen solubilizing / stabilizing agent, a wax, and a silicone elastomer. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] Consumers desire for new cosmetic products with high photoprotective efficacy for the health of their skin, which in turn poses a big technical challenge to the cosmetic industry.

[0003] It is well known that sunlight or ultraviolet radiation in the UV-B range has a wavelength of 290 nm to 320 nm and is the primary cause of sunburn, and Ultraviolet rays at a wavelength of 320 nm to 400 nm (UV-A radiation) will cause tanning of the skin and can also damage or harm the skin. The essential ingredients of photoprotective products are sunscreens that have the capacity of filtering or blocking the harmful UVA and UVB rays.

[0004] Commercial photoprotective products are regulated. For example, the sunburn protection provided by the photoprotective products is officially rated by the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value. Because SPF values are determined from a test that measures protection against sunbum caused by UVB radiation, SPF values focus on rating a photoprotective product’s UVB protection.

[0005] Also, active photoprotective ingredients are tightly regulated. For example, only a limited selection of active photoprotective ingredients are allowed and their respective concentrations are restricted. These tight regulations make it extremely expensive or even impossible to commercialize new active photoprotective ingredients or use allowed sunscreens at high concentrations for better photoprotective efficacy. In order to meet the consumers’ ever-increasing appetite for new products with high photoprotective efficacy, the cosmetic industry has been investing heavily on finding cosmetic compositions that can boost photoprotective efficacy. However, this endeavor has only seen limited successes over the years.

[0021] The photoprotective cosmetic composition of this disclosure may be in the form of emulsions (e.g., oil-in-water, water-in-oil, silicone-in-water, water-in-silicone, water-in-oil-in-water, oil-in-water, oil-in-water-in-oil. oil-in-water-in-silicone, etc.), creams, lotions, solutions, anhydrous bases, gels, ointments, pastes, milks, liquids, aerosols, and solid forms. An anhydrous composition comprises less than 0.01% water by weight of the total photoprotective cosmetic composition. Preferably, the photoprotective cosmetic composition of this disclosure is anhydrous.

[0022] In some preferred embodiments, the photoprotective cosmetic composition comprises at least one UVA chemical sunscreen, at least one UVB chemical sunscreen, a sunscreen solubilizing / stabilizing agent, a wax. and a silicone elastomer. Preferably, the photoprotective cosmetic composition comprises a UVA chemical sunscreen, at least one UVB chemical sunscreen, a sunscreen solubilizing / stabilizing agent, a wax, and a silicone elastomer. [0025] The photoprotective cosmetic composition of this disclosure may comprise at least one chemical sunscreen. The total amount of the at least one chemical sunscreen present in the photoprotective cosmetic composition may range from about 10% to about 40%, preferably from about 15% to about 30%, more preferably from about 20% to about 25% by weight of the total photoprotective cosmetic composition.

[0026] In some preferred embodiments, the at least one chemical sunscreen comprises chemical sunscreens selected from the group consisting of UVA chemical sunscreens, UVB chemical sunscreens, and mixtures thereof. UVB Chemical Sunscreens

More preferably, the vinyl terminated silicone is bis-vinyldimethicone. Most preferably, the silicone elastomer has the INCI name of Poly silicone-11.

The liquid carrier may be selected from the group consisting of water, mono alcohols, polyols, esters, ethers, silicone oils, or mixtures thereof. Preferably, the liquid carrier of this disclosure comprises at least one silicone oil. More preferably, the at least silicone oil is selected from the group consisting of Dimethicone. Dimethiconol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Phenyl Trimethicone, and mixture thereof. Most preferably, the liquid carrier of this disclosure comprises Phenyl Trimethicone.

Example 1: Exemplary Compositions and In Vitro SPF

[0083] The ingredients used for the preparation of the exemplary compositions are: Dowsil 556 Cos Grade Fluid / SF1550 (purchased from Dow Coming, INCI: Phenyl Trimethicone), Parsol 340 (purchased from DSM, INCI: Octocrylene), Eusolex HMS / Neo Heliopan HMS (purchased from Merck or Symrise, INCI: Homosalate), Hallbrite BHB (purchased from Hallstar, INCI: Butyloctyl Salicylate), Neo Heliopan OS (purchased from Symrise, INCI: Ethylhexyl Salicylate), Parsol 1789 (purchased from DSM, INCI: Butyl Methoxy dibenzoylmethane), Syncrowax HR-C (purchased from Croda, INCT: Tribehenin), Gransil PM-LC (20% solution in Phenyl Trimethicone, purchased from Grant Industries, INCI: Poly silicone-11).

[0085] The in vitro Sun Protection Factor (SPF in vitro) values of the exemplary compositions were measured by using a spectrophotometer (e.g., Labsphere UV-2000S Ultraviolet Transmittance Analyzer) and calculated according to the protocol described in the guideline for an in vitro test published by COLIPA (the European Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association) in 2011. The “SPF in vitro” is defined by COLIPA as “the absolute protection performance of a sun care product against erythema-inducing radiation, calculated from the measured in vitro transmittance and weighted with the erythema action spectrum.” Such “SPF in vitro” includes the consideration of the protection from UVA radiation in a very different way from the UVB radiation focused Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rating currently used for labeling the commercial photoprotective cosmetic product. Nevertheless, it is recognized in the field that the value of such “SPF in vitro” is very useful to determine relative photoprotection effectiveness of different cosmetic compositions.

[0088] The weight percentage of the wax and the weight ratios of the wax to the sunscreen or the silicone elastomer are important for the synergistic effects, as the experimental data shown. For example, the SPF in vitro value of Sample 11 is much lower than that of Sample 10, despite of the fact that Sample 11 contains higher amount of the wax (Tribehenin, 20%) than Sample 10 does (15%). In addition, Sample 6 has the low wax amount (Tribehenin, 1%) and does not show the synergistic effects, while the elastomer and the sunscreens of Sample 6 are the same as those of Samples 3 and 7.

[0089] Samples 20, 21, and 22 show that when a composition contains very low amount of sunscreens, adding wax and elastomer does not trigger meaningful synergistic 5 effects. In the meantime, Samples 12, 13, 14, and 15 show that when a composition contains moderate amount of sunscreens, the addition of wax and elastomer still brings significant synergistic effects. 1. A photoprotective cosmetic composition comprising at least one chemical sunscreen, a sunscreen solubilizing / stabilizing agent, a wax. and a silicone elastomer; wherein the total amount of the at least one chemical sunscreen ranges from about 10% to about 40%, the amount of the sunscreen solubilizing / stabilizing agent ranges from about 1% to about 10% , the w ax is present at a level of greater than 1% and less than 20 wt.%, and the amount of the silicone elastomer ranges from about 0.1% to about 20%, by weight of the total photoprotective cosmetic composition.

2. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 1, wherein the at least one chemical sunscreen comprises at least on UVA chemical sunscreen and at least one UVB chemical sunscreen.

3. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 2, wherein the at least one UVA chemical sunscreen comprises Butyl Methoxy dibenzoylmethane.

4. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 2, wherein at least one UVB chemical sunscreen comprises at least three UVB chemical sunscreens selected from the group consisting of Octocrylene, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, Octinoxate, Cinoxate, Benzophenone 3, Benzophenone 4, Benzophenone 5, Homosalate, PABA, Ethyl Hexyl Dimethyl PABA, Ethyldihydroxypropyl PABA, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, TEA-Salicylate, DEA-Salicylate, and mixtures thereof.

5. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 4, wherein the at least three UVB chemical sunscreens comprise Octocrylene, Homosalate, and Ethylhexyl Salicylate.

6. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 2, wherein the total amount of the at least one UVA chemical sunscreen ranges from about 0.1% to about 8% by weight of the total photoprotective cosmetic composition.

7. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 2, wherein the total amount of the at least one UVB chemical sunscreen ranges from about 5% to about 40% by weight of the total photoprotective cosmetic composition.

8. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 1, wherein the sunscreen solubilizing / stabilizing agent is selected from the group consisting of C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Butyloctyl Salicylate, PPG-15 Stearyl Ether Benzoate, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, and mixtures thereof.

9. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 1, wherein the wax is naturally occurring.

10. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 1, wherein the wax comprises estersderived from glycerin and three fatty acids.

11. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 1, wherein the silicone elastomer is a crosslinked polymer formed by the reaction of vinyl terminated silicone and hydrogen dimethicone.

12. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 1, wherein the weight ratio of the silicone elastomer to the wax is from about 10:1 to about 1:10.

13. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 2, wherein the weight ratio of the wax to the at least one UVA chemical sunscreen is from about 7:1 to about 1:5,14. The photoprotective cosmetic composition of Claim 1, wherein the photoprotective cosmetic composition is anhydrous.
