Abstract

Methods, systems, and apparatus for wireless communications are described in which different component carriers (CCs) or bandwidth parts (BWPs) of a system operating in accordance with carrier aggregation may be configured with different transmission configuration indicator (TCI) states. A base station may transmit control information to a user equipment (UE) to activate two or more CCs, and the control information indicates two or more different TCI state sets activated for the two or more CCs. The control information may be transmitted to the UE in a single MAC‑CE. A single MAC‑CE for activating different TCI state sets at each CC or BWP may allow for a reduced number of MAC‑CEs for communicating active TCI state sets for each CC or BWP.

[0055] Detailed Description

[0056] A wireless communication system, such as a new radio (NR) system, may support carrier aggregation using multiple component carriers (CCs). In some cases, one or more CCs may be divided into bandwidth parts (BWPs), and one BWP may be active for communication using the CCs. In one example, a communication link in the system may support transmission using multiple CCs (e.g., up to 16 uplink CCs and up to 16 downlink CCs). In some systems, one media access control (MAC) control element (MAC-CE) may be used to configure two or more CCs with two or more different sets of active transmission configuration indicator (TCI) states.

[0057] Each CC may be uniquely identified and configured for physical channel and reference signal transmission. For example, for each downlink and uplink CC, beam selection may be indicated to the UE via MAC-CE. The configuration of each CC may result in increased signaling overhead in the wireless system.

[0058] When a UE is configured with multiple CCs, a relatively large number of MAC-CEs (e.g., up to 16 MAC-CEs, each for each of up to 16 CCs) may be used to select different TCI state identifiers (IDs) in each CC (e.g., in downlink NR-NR carrier aggregation). The use of this number of MAC-CEs may result in increased signaling overhead between the UE and the base station. In order to reduce the number of MAC-CEs used to communicate the active TCI state set in each CC configured for communication between the base station and the UE, various aspects discussed herein provide a single MAC-CE command that may be used to activate two or more different active TCI state sets for a number of CCs / BWPs for which the TCI state is active (e.g., for multiple CCs / BWPs). For example, a first activated TCI state set may be selected to be associated with a first group of one or more CCs, and a second activated TCI state set may be selected to be associated with a second group of one or more CCs.

[0059] In some cases, a single MAC-CE may be used to activate different sets of active TCI states for data communications in different groups of BWPs or CCs (e.g., physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) or physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH)). This is in contrast to the use of multiple MAC-CEs, in which each MAC-CE is used to select an active TCI state set in an active BWP corresponding to a single CC (e.g., in downlink NR-NR carrier aggregation), which may result in increased signaling overhead between the UE and the base station. The techniques discussed herein allow for a reduced number of MAC-CEs for communicating active TCI state sets for multiple active BWPs in corresponding multiple CCs that are quasi-co-located (QCL) in space. In some cases, a single MAC-CE command may be used to select multiple active TCI state sets for PDSCH that may be applied to a group of BWPs / CCs. For example, a MAC-CE may include a number of octets that may be used to activate different CCs. The reserved bits in each octet may indicate whether the TCI state associated with the activated CC / BWP is to be applied to other CC / BWPs. For example, if the reserved bits in the octet are set to zero, the TCI state associated with the indicated CC / BWP may not be applied to other CC / BWPs. However, if the reserved bits are set to one, one or more TCI states of the CC / BWP indicated in the octet may be applied to one or more other CC / BWPs. This reduced signaling may provide enhanced system efficiency through a reduction in signaling, reduced power consumption, and accelerated signaling.

[0060] Various aspects of the present disclosure are initially described in the context of a wireless communication system. Various aspects regarding process flows are subsequently described. Various aspects of the present disclosure are further illustrated and described by and with reference to apparatus diagrams, system diagrams, and flow diagrams related to communication configurations for multiple CCs.

[0061] Figure 1 An example of a wireless communication system 100 supporting a transmission configuration indicator state activation technique for carrier aggregation according to various aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. The wireless communication system 100 includes a network device 105, a UE 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may be an LTE network, an LTE-A network, an LTE-A Pro network, or an NR network. In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may support enhanced broadband communications, ultra-reliable (e.g., mission-critical) communications, low latency communications, or communications with low-cost and low-complexity devices. The wireless communication system 100 may support signaling between a network device 105 (such as a base station) and a UE 115 for configuration and management of control channel monitoring by a relay 140.

[0062] The core network 130 may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 130 may be an evolved packet core (EPC), which may include at least one mobility management entity (MME), at least one serving gateway (S-GW), and at least one packet data network (PDN) gateway (P-GW). The MME may manage non-access layer (e.g., control plane) functions such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management of UE 115 served by network devices 105 associated with the EPC. User IP packets may be delivered through the S-GW, which itself may be connected to the P-GW. The P-GW may provide IP address allocation and other functions. The P-GW may be connected to network operator IP services. Operator IP services may include access to the Internet, an intranet, an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS), or packet switched (PS) streaming services.

[0063] At least some of the network devices 105 (e.g., network device 105-a (which may be an example of a base station (e.g., eNB, network access device, gNB)) or network device 105-b (which may be an example of an access node controller (ANC)) may interface with the core network 130 via a backhaul link 132 (e.g., S1, S2) and may perform radio configuration and scheduling to communicate with the UE 115. In various examples, the network devices 105-b may communicate with each other directly or indirectly (e.g., through the core network 130) over a backhaul link 134 (e.g., X1, X2), which may be a wired or wireless communication link.

[0064] Each network device 105-b may also additionally or alternatively communicate with a plurality of UEs 115 through a plurality of other network devices 105-c, where the network device 105-c may be an example of a smart radio head (or through a plurality of smart radio heads). In alternative configurations, the various functions of each network device 105 may be distributed across various network devices 105 (e.g., radio heads and access network controllers) or merged into a single network device 105 (e.g., a base station).

[0065] The network device 105 may communicate wirelessly with the UE 115 via one or more base station antennas. The network device 105 described herein may include or may be referred to by those skilled in the art as a base transceiver station, a radio base station, an access point, a radio transceiver, a Node B, an eNB, a Next Generation Node B, or a Gigabit Node B (any of which may be referred to as a gNB), a Home Node B, a Home Evolved Node B, or some other suitable terminology. The wireless communication system 100 may include different types of network devices 105 (e.g., a macro cell base station or a small cell base station). The UE 115 described herein may be able to communicate with various types of network devices 105 and network equipment (including macro eNBs, small cell eNBs, gNBs, relay base stations, etc.).

[0066] Each network device 105 may be associated with a particular geographic coverage area 110 in which it supports communications with various UEs 115. Each network device 105 may provide communications coverage for a respective geographic coverage area 110 via a communication link 125, and the communication link 125 between the network device 105 and the UE 115 may utilize one or more carriers. The communication link 125 shown in the wireless communication system 100 may include an uplink transmission from the UE 115 to the network device 105, or a downlink transmission from the network device 105 to the UE 115. Downlink transmissions may also be referred to as forward link transmissions, and uplink transmissions may also be referred to as reverse link transmissions.

[0067] The geographic coverage area 110 of the network device 105 may be divided into sectors that constitute only a portion of the geographic coverage area 110, and each sector may be associated with a cellular cell. For example, each network device 105 may provide communication coverage for a macrocellular cell, a small cellular cell, a hotspot, or other types of cellular cells, or various combinations thereof. In some examples, the network device 105 may be mobile and therefore provide communication coverage for a mobile geographic coverage area 110. In some examples, different geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may overlap, and overlapping geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may be supported by the same network device 105 or different network devices 105. The wireless communication system 100 may include, for example, a heterogeneous LTE / LTE-A / LTE-A Pro or NR network, in which different types of network devices 105 provide coverage for various geographic coverage areas 110.

[0068] The term "cell" refers to a logical communication entity used to communicate with network device 105 (e.g., on a carrier), and may be associated with an identifier to distinguish adjacent cells operating via the same or different carriers (e.g., physical cell identifier (PCID), virtual cell identifier (VCID)). In some examples, a carrier may support multiple cells, and different cells may be configured according to different protocol types that may provide access to different types of devices (e.g., machine type communication (MTC), narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT), enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), or others). In some cases, the term "cell" may refer to a portion of a geographic coverage area 110 (e.g., a sector) on which the logical entity operates.

[0069] Each UE 115 can be dispersed throughout the wireless communication system 100, and each UE 115 can be stationary or mobile. UE 115 can also be referred to as a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a handheld device, or a subscriber device or some other suitable term, wherein "device" can also be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal or a client. UE 115 can also be a personal electronic device, such as a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a tablet computer, a laptop computer or a personal computer. In some examples, UE 115 can also refer to a wireless local loop (WLL) station, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, an Internet of Everything (IoE) device, or an MTC device, etc., which can be implemented in various items (such as electrical appliances, vehicles, meters, etc.). UE 115 can communicate with the core network 130 via a communication link 135.

[0070] Some UEs 115, such as MTC or IoT devices, may be low-cost or low-complexity devices and may provide automated communication between machines (e.g., via machine-to-machine (M2M) communication). M2M communication or MTC may refer to data communication technology that allows devices to communicate with each other or with network devices 105 without human intervention. In some examples, M2M communication or MTC may include communications from devices that integrate sensors or meters to measure or capture information and relay the information to a central server or application, which may utilize the information or present the information to a person interacting with the program or application. Some UEs 115 may be designed to collect information or implement automated behavior of machines. Examples of applications for MTC devices include: smart metering, inventory monitoring, water level monitoring, equipment monitoring, health care monitoring, field survival monitoring, weather and geographic event monitoring, queue management and tracking, remote security sensing, physical access control, and transaction-based commercial charging. In some cases, the repeater 140 may be an MTC or IoT device that is controlled by the network device 105 or UE 115 via a low bandwidth (low frequency band) or NB-IoT connection, and performs relaying of received signals without demodulating or decoding the signals based on control information provided by the low frequency band or NB-IoT connection.

[0071] Some UEs 115 may be configured to employ a reduced power consumption mode of operation, such as half-duplex communication (e.g., a mode that supports unidirectional communication via transmission or reception but not simultaneous transmission and reception). In some examples, half-duplex communication may be performed with a reduced peak rate. Other power saving techniques for UE 115 include entering a power saving "deep sleep" mode when not engaged in active communications, or operating over a limited bandwidth (e.g., in accordance with narrowband communications). In some cases, UE 115 may be designed to support critical functions (e.g., mission critical functions), and the wireless communication system 100 may be configured to provide ultra-reliable communications for these functions.

[0072] In some cases, UE 115 may also be able to communicate directly with other UE 115 (e.g., using a peer-to-peer (P2P) or device-to-device (D2D) protocol). One or more of a group of UE 115 utilizing D2D communication may be within a geographic coverage area 110 of a network device 105. Other UE 115 in this group may be outside the geographic coverage area 110 of the network device 105, or otherwise unable to receive transmissions from the network device 105. In some cases, each group of UE 115 communicating via D2D communication may utilize a one-to-many (1:M) system, where each UE 115 transmits to each other UE 115 in the group. In some cases, the network device 105 facilitates the scheduling of resources for D2D communication. In other cases, D2D communication is performed between UE 115 without involving the network device 105.

[0073] Each network device 105 can communicate with the core network 130 and with each other. For example, the network device 105 can interface with the core network 130 via a backhaul link 132 (e.g., via S1, N2, N3, or other interfaces). Each network device 105 can communicate with each other directly (e.g., directly between each network device 105) or indirectly (e.g., via the core network 130) on a backhaul link 134 (e.g., via X2, Xn, or other interfaces).

[0074] At least some of these network devices (such as network device 105) may include subcomponents, such as access network entities, which may be examples of ANCs. Each access network entity may communicate with each UE 115 through a number of other access network transport entities, which may be referred to as radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmission / reception points (TRPs). In some configurations, the various functions of each access network entity or network device 105 may be distributed across various network devices (e.g., radio heads and access network controllers) or merged into a single network device (e.g., network device 105).

[0075] The electromagnetic spectrum is typically subdivided into various classes, bands, channels, etc. based on frequency / wavelength. In 5G NR, two initial operating bands have been identified as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz–7.125 GHz) and FR2 (24.25 GHz–52.6 GHz). Frequencies between FR1 and FR2 are typically referred to as mid-band frequencies. Although a portion of FR1 is greater than 6 GHz, FR1 is typically (interchangeably) referred to as the “sub-6 GHz band” in various documents and articles. Similar naming issues sometimes arise regarding FR2, which is typically (interchangeably) referred to as the “millimeter wave” band in various documents and articles, although it is different from the extremely high frequency (EHF) band (30 GHz–300 GHz) identified as the “millimeter wave” band by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

[0076] In view of the above aspects, unless otherwise specifically stated, it should be understood that if used in this article, the term "sub-6GHz" and the like can broadly represent frequencies that can be less than 6GHz, can be within FR1, or can include mid-band frequencies. In addition, unless otherwise specifically stated, it should be understood that if used in this article, the term "millimeter wave" and the like can broadly represent frequencies that can include mid-band frequencies, can be within FR2, or can be within the EHF band.

[0077] The wireless communication system 100 may operate using one or more frequency bands, typically in the range of 300 MHz to 300 GHz. In general, the 300 MHz to 3 GHz region is referred to as the ultra-high frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the wavelengths range from about 1 decimeter to 1 meter long. UHF waves may be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features. However, these waves may penetrate various structures sufficiently for macro cells to provide services to UEs 115 located indoors. Transmission of UHF waves may be associated with smaller antennas and shorter ranges (e.g., less than 100 km) compared to transmission using lower frequencies and longer waves in the high frequency (HF) or very high frequency (VHF) portion of the spectrum below 300 MHz.

[0078] The wireless communication system 100 may also operate in the Super High Frequency (SHF) region using a frequency band from 3 GHz to 30 GHz, also known as the centimeter band. The SHF region includes frequency bands that may be opportunistically used by devices that can tolerate interference from other users, such as the 5 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band.

[0079] The wireless communication system 100 may also operate in the extremely high frequency (EHF) division of the spectrum (e.g., from 30 GHz to 300 GHz), which is also referred to as the millimeter band. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may support mmW communications between the UE 115 and the network device 105, and the EHF antenna of the corresponding device may be even smaller and more closely spaced than the UHF antenna. In some cases, this may facilitate the use of antenna arrays within the UE 115. However, the propagation of EHF transmissions may be subject to even greater atmospheric attenuation and shorter range than SHF or UHF transmissions. The technology disclosed herein may be adopted across transmissions using one or more different frequency divisions, and the use of frequency bands specified across these frequency divisions may differ by country or regulatory agency.

[0080] In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may utilize both licensed and unlicensed radio frequency spectrum bands. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may adopt license assisted access (LAA), LTE unlicensed (LTE-U) radio access technology, or NR technology in an unlicensed band (such as a 5 GHz ISM band). When operating in an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band, wireless devices (such as network devices 105 and UE 115) may adopt a listen-before-talk (LBT) procedure to ensure that the frequency channel is clear before transmitting data. In some cases, operations in unlicensed bands may be based on CA configurations (e.g., LAA) in coordination with CCs operating in licensed bands. Operations in unlicensed spectrum may include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, peer-to-peer transmissions, or a combination of these. Duplexing in unlicensed spectrum may be based on frequency division duplexing (FDD), time division duplexing (TDD), or a combination of the two.

[0081] In some examples, the network device 105 or UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas, which may be used to employ techniques such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication, or beamforming. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may use a transmission scheme between a transmitting device (e.g., network device 105) and a receiving device (e.g., UE 115), wherein the transmitting device is equipped with multiple antennas and the receiving device is equipped with one or more antennas. MIMO communication may employ multipath signal propagation to increase spectral efficiency by transmitting or receiving multiple signals via different spatial layers, which may be referred to as spatial multiplexing. For example, the transmitting device may transmit multiple signals via different antennas or different antenna combinations. Similarly, the receiving device may receive multiple signals via different antennas or different antenna combinations. Each of these multiple signals may be referred to as a separate spatial stream and may carry bits associated with the same data stream (e.g., the same codeword) or different data streams. Different spatial layers may be associated with different antenna ports for channel measurement and reporting. MIMO technology includes single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO), in which multiple spatial layers are transmitted to the same receiving device, and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO), in which multiple spatial layers are transmitted to multiple devices.

[0082] Beamforming (which may also be referred to as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception) is a signal processing technique that may be used at a transmitting device or a receiving device (e.g., a network device 105 or a UE 115) to shape or steer an antenna beam (e.g., a transmit beam or a receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting device and the receiving device. Beamforming may be achieved by combining signals communicated via antenna elements of an antenna array so that signals propagating at a particular orientation relative to the antenna array experience constructive interference, while other signals experience destructive interference. Adjustments to signals communicated via antenna elements may include the transmitting device or the receiving device applying a particular amplitude and phase shift to the signal carried via each antenna element associated with the device. Adjustments associated with each antenna element may be defined by a set of beamforming weights associated with a particular orientation (e.g., relative to the antenna array of the transmitting device or the receiving device, or relative to some other orientation).

[0083] In one example, the network device 105 may use multiple antennas or antenna arrays to perform beamforming operations for directional communication with the UE 115. For example, some signals (e.g., synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) may be transmitted multiple times by the network device 105 in different directions, which may include a signal being transmitted according to different beamforming weight sets associated with different transmission directions. Transmissions in different beam directions may be used (e.g., by the network device 105 or a receiving device, such as the UE 115) to identify a beam direction used by the network device 105 for subsequent transmission and / or reception. Some signals (such as data signals associated with a particular receiving device) may be transmitted by the network device 105 in a single beam direction (e.g., a direction associated with a receiving device (such as the UE 115)). In some examples, the beam direction associated with transmissions along a single beam direction may be determined based at least in part on signals transmitted in different beam directions. For example, UE 115 may receive one or more signals transmitted by network device 105 in different directions, and UE 115 may report indications of the signals it received with the highest signal quality or other acceptable signal quality to network device 105. Although these techniques are described with reference to signals transmitted by network device 105 in one or more directions, UE 115 may use similar techniques for transmitting signals multiple times in different directions (e.g., for identifying a beam direction for subsequent transmission or reception by UE 115) or for transmitting signals in a single direction (e.g., for transmitting data to a recipient device).

[0084] A receiving device (e.g., UE 115, which may be an example of a mmW receiving device) may try multiple receive beams when receiving various signals (such as synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) from network device 105. For example, the receiving device may try multiple receive directions by receiving via different antenna subarrays, processing received signals according to different antenna subarrays, receiving according to different receive beamforming weight sets applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, or processing received signals according to different receive beamforming weight sets applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, any of which may be referred to as "listening" according to different receive beams or receive directions. In some examples, the receiving device may use a single receive beam to receive along a single beam direction (e.g., when receiving a data signal). A single receive beam may be aligned in a beam direction determined based at least in part on listening according to different receive beam directions (e.g., a beam direction determined to have the highest signal strength, highest signal-to-noise ratio, or other acceptable signal quality based at least in part on listening according to multiple beam directions).

[0085] In some cases, the antennas of network device 105 or UE 115 may be located within one or more antenna arrays that may support MIMO operations or transmit or receive beamforming. For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be co-located at an antenna assembly, such as an antenna tower. In some cases, antennas or antenna arrays associated with network device 105 may be located at different geographic locations. Network device 105 may have an antenna array with several rows and columns of antenna ports that network device 105 may use to support beamforming for communications with UE 115. Likewise, UE 115 may have one or more antenna arrays that may support various MIMO or beamforming operations.

[0086] In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 can be a packet-based network operated according to a layered protocol stack. In the user plane, the communication of the bearer or packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer can be based on IP. In some cases, the radio link control (RLC) layer can perform packet segmentation and reorganization to communicate on the logical channel. The media access control (MAC) layer can perform priority handling and multiplex the logical channel into the transport channel. The MAC layer can also use hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) to provide retransmission of the MAC layer, thereby improving link efficiency. In the control plane, the radio resource control (RRC) protocol layer can provide the establishment, configuration and maintenance of the RRC connection of the radio bearer supporting user plane data between the UE 115 and the network device 105 or the core network 130. In the physical (PHY) layer, the transport channel can be mapped to the physical channel.

[0087] In some cases, UE 115 and network device 105 may support retransmission of data to increase the likelihood that the data is successfully received. HARQ feedback is a technique that increases the likelihood of correctly receiving data on communication link 125. HARQ may include a combination of error detection (e.g., using cyclic redundancy check (CRC)), forward error correction (FEC), and retransmission (e.g., automatic repeat request (ARQ)). HARQ can improve the throughput of the MAC layer in poor radio conditions (e.g., signal-to-noise ratio conditions). In some cases, a wireless device may support simultaneous slot HARQ feedback, where the device may provide HARQ feedback in a specific time slot for data received in a previous symbol in the time slot. In other cases, the device may provide HARQ feedback in a subsequent time slot or according to some other time interval.

[0088] The time interval in LTE or NR can be represented by a basic time unit (which may refer to a sampling period T, for example). s =1 / 30,720,000 seconds). The time intervals of the communication resources may be organized according to radio frames each having a duration of 10 milliseconds (ms), where the frame period may be expressed as T f=307,200T s . A radio frame may be identified by a system frame number (SFN) ranging from 0 to 1023. Each frame may include 10 subframes numbered from 0 to 9, and each subframe may have a duration of 1 ms. A subframe may be further divided into 2 slots, each slot having a duration of 0.5 ms, and each slot may contain 6 or 7 modulation symbol periods (e.g., depending on the length of a cyclic prefix prepended to each symbol period). Excluding the cyclic prefix, each symbol period may contain 2048 sampling periods. In some cases, a subframe may be the minimum scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 and may be referred to as a transmission time interval (TTI). In other cases, the minimum scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 may be shorter than a subframe or may be dynamically selected (e.g., in a burst of a shortened TTI (sTTI) or in a selected component carrier using sTTI).

[0089] In some wireless communication systems, a time slot may be further divided into a plurality of mini-slots containing one or more symbols. In some instances, a symbol of a mini-slot or a mini-slot may be a minimum scheduling unit. For example, each symbol may vary in duration depending on the subcarrier spacing or the operating frequency band. In addition, some wireless communication systems may implement time slot aggregation, wherein a plurality of time slots or mini-slots are aggregated together and used for communication between UE 115 and network device 105.

[0090] The term "carrier" refers to a set of radio frequency spectrum resources having a defined physical layer structure for supporting communications on the communication link 125. For example, a carrier of the communication link 125 may include a portion of a radio frequency spectrum band that operates according to a physical layer channel for a given radio access technology. Each physical layer channel may carry user data, control information, or other signaling. A carrier may be associated with a predefined frequency channel (e.g., an E-UTRA Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number (EARFCN)) and may be located according to a channel grid for discovery by a UE 115. A carrier may be downlink or uplink (e.g., in FDD mode), or configured to carry downlink communications and uplink communications (e.g., in TDD mode). In some examples, a signal waveform transmitted on a carrier may include multiple subcarriers (e.g., using a multi-carrier modulation (MCM) technique such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or DFT-s-OFDM).

[0091] The organization structure of the carrier may be different for different radio access technologies (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, NR, etc.). For example, communications on a carrier may be organized according to TTIs or time slots, each of which may include user data and control information or signaling to support decoding of the user data. A carrier may also include dedicated acquisition signaling (e.g., synchronization signals or system information, etc.) and control signaling to coordinate carrier operations. In some examples (e.g., in a carrier aggregation configuration), a carrier may also have acquisition signaling or control signaling to coordinate the operations of other carriers.

[0092] Physical channels may be multiplexed on a carrier according to various techniques. Physical control channels and physical data channels may be multiplexed on a downlink carrier, for example, using a time division multiplexing (TDM) technique, a frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technique, or a hybrid TDM-FDM technique. In some examples, control information transmitted in a physical control channel may be distributed in a cascaded manner between different control regions (e.g., between a common control region or a common search space and one or more UE-specific control regions or UE-specific search spaces).

[0093] A carrier may be associated with a particular bandwidth of the radio frequency spectrum, and in some examples, the carrier bandwidth may be referred to as the "system bandwidth" of the carrier or wireless communication system 100. For example, the carrier bandwidth may be one of several predetermined bandwidths of a carrier for a particular radio access technology (e.g., 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, or 80 MHz). In some examples, each served UE 115 may be configured to operate on part or all of the carrier bandwidth. In other examples, some UEs 115 may be configured to operate using a narrowband protocol type associated with a predefined portion or range (e.g., a set of subcarriers or RBs) within a carrier (e.g., an "in-band" deployment of a narrowband protocol type).

[0094] In a system using MCM technology, a resource element may include a symbol period (e.g., the duration of a modulation symbol) and a subcarrier, where the symbol period and the subcarrier spacing are inversely related. The number of bits carried by each resource element may depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme). Thus, the more resource elements received by UE 115 and the higher the order of the modulation scheme, the higher the data rate of UE 115 can be. In a MIMO system, wireless communication resources may refer to a combination of radio frequency spectrum resources, time resources, and space resources (e.g., space layers), and the use of multiple space layers may further increase the data rate of communication with UE 115.

[0095] A device of the wireless communication system 100 (e.g., a network device 105 or a UE 115) may have a hardware configuration that supports communication on a particular carrier bandwidth, or may be configurable to support communication on one of a set of carrier bandwidths. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may include a network device 105 and / or a UE 115 that may support simultaneous communication via carriers associated with more than one different carrier bandwidths.

[0096] The wireless communication system 100 may support communication with a UE 115 on multiple cells or carriers, a feature that may be referred to as carrier aggregation (CA) or multi-carrier operation. The UE 115 may be configured with multiple downlink CCs and one or more uplink CCs according to a carrier aggregation configuration. Carrier aggregation may be used with both FDD and TDD component carriers.

[0097] In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may utilize an enhanced component carrier (eCC). An eCC may be characterized by one or more features including a wider carrier or frequency channel bandwidth, a shorter symbol duration, a shorter TTI duration, or a modified control channel configuration. In some cases, an eCC may be associated with a carrier aggregation configuration or a dual connectivity configuration (e.g., when multiple serving cells have suboptimal or non-ideal backhaul links). An eCC may also be configured for use in an unlicensed spectrum or a shared spectrum (e.g., where more than one operator is allowed to use the spectrum). An eCC characterized by a wide carrier bandwidth may include one or more segments that may be utilized by a UE 115 that is not capable of monitoring the entire carrier bandwidth or is otherwise configured to use a limited carrier bandwidth (e.g., to save power).

[0098] In some cases, an eCC may utilize a different symbol duration than other CCs, which may include using a reduced symbol duration compared to the symbol duration of other CCs. A shorter symbol duration may be associated with an increased spacing between adjacent subcarriers. A device utilizing an eCC (such as a UE 115 or a network device 105) may transmit a wideband signal (e.g., based on a frequency channel or carrier bandwidth of 20, 40, 60, 80 MHz, etc.) with a reduced symbol duration (e.g., 16.67 microseconds). A TTI in an eCC may include one or more symbol periods. In some cases, the TTI duration (i.e., the number of symbol periods in a TTI) may be variable.

[0099] Wireless communication systems (such as NR systems) can utilize any combination of licensed, shared, and unlicensed spectrum bands, etc. The flexibility of eCC symbol duration and subcarrier spacing can allow eCC to be used across multiple spectrums. In some examples, NR shared spectrum can improve spectrum utilization and spectrum efficiency, especially through dynamic vertical (e.g., across frequency domain) and horizontal (e.g., across time domain) sharing of resources.

[0100] A UE 115 attempting to access a wireless network may perform an initial cell search by detecting a primary synchronization signal (PSS) from the network device 105. The PSS may enable synchronization of time slot timing and may indicate a physical layer identity value. The UE 115 may then receive a secondary synchronization signal (SSS). The SSS may enable radio frame synchronization and may provide a cell identity value that may be combined with a physical layer identity value to identify the cell. The SSS may also enable detection of duplex mode and cyclic prefix length. Some systems (such as TDD systems) may transmit SSS but not PSS. Both PSS and SSS may be located in the center 62 and 72 subcarriers of a carrier, respectively. In some cases, the network device 105 may use multiple beams to transmit synchronization signals (e.g., PSS, SSS, etc.) through a cellular coverage area in a beam sweeping manner. In some cases, PSS, SSS, and / or broadcast information (e.g., physical broadcast channel (PBCH)) may be transmitted within a synchronization signal block (SSB) on a corresponding directional beam, wherein one or more SSBs may be included within a synchronization signal burst.

[0101] One or more of the network devices 105 may include a communication manager 101 that may configure one or more UEs 115 for communication using carrier aggregation via two or more CCs. In some cases, two or more different active TCI state sets may be configured for two or more CCs, or two or more different active TCI state sets may be associated with two or more CCs, and indications of the different TCI state sets may be provided in a single MAC-CE. In some examples, the communication manager 101 may determine a CC to be activated for communication and an associated TCI state set, and transmit control information (e.g., a single MAC-CE) indicating the activated CC and the associated TCI state set to the UE 115.

[0102] In other examples, the communication manager 102 may receive configuration information for multiple CCs. In some cases, the network device 105 may transmit indications of different TCI state sets for configured CCs in a single MAC-CE. In some examples, the communication manager 102 may determine the CCs and associated TCI state sets to be activated for communication based on the control information (e.g., the single MAC-CE), and communicate with the network device 105 using the activated CCs and associated TCI state sets.

[0103] Figure 2An example of a wireless communication system 200 that supports transmission configuration indicator state activation techniques for carrier aggregation according to aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the wireless communication system 200 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. For example, the wireless communication system 200 includes a base station 105-a and a UE 115-a, which can be reference Figure 1 Examples of corresponding devices described.

[0104] The wireless communication system 200 may support carrier aggregation using multiple CCs 225. The UE 115-a and the base station 105-a may communicate on the links 205, 210, and optionally on the link 215. For example, the link 205 may support communications using CCs 225-a, 225-b, and 225-c, and additional CCs 225 may be used on the link 205. For example, up to 16 uplink CCs 225 and up to 16 downlink CCs 225 may be used for carrier aggregation on the link 205. In some systems, one MAC-CE 220 may be used to activate different TCI state sets in different CCs 225 or serving cells.

[0105] In some cases, multiple BWPs may be defined for one or more of CCs 225, and the multiple BWPs may be used to transmit / receive control / data for UE 115-a. In some cases, one BWP may be active per CC 225, and up to 4 BWPs may be defined per CC 225. Each active BWP may have multiple TCI states to be managed (e.g., activated / deactivated). The TCI state may be used to inform UE 115-a how a downlink signal is transmitted, and information may be provided based on association, such as in a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH), using the same beam parameters (e.g., QCL type D) as some other downlink reference signal to transmit the downlink signal. This association information may allow UE 115-a to receive PDSCH / PDCCH using the correct receive beam. In some cases, up to 128 TCI states may be configured for a UE 115-a, but only a subset of them are active (e.g., activated by a MAC-CE), while the rest are inactive. TCI state activation / deactivation may be configured per BWP. In some cases, for PDSCH reception, the associated downlink control information (DCI) may indicate to the UE 115-a which TCI state in the set of activated TCI states to apply.

[0106] Various prior art techniques may provide that when CCs 225 share the same analog beam in the same frequency band (e.g., spatially QCL), up to 16 MAC CEs 220 may be used to select the same TCI state ID in each CC 225 (e.g., in downlink NR-NR carrier aggregation). Due to spatial QCL, the same TCI state ID may be used in such CCs 225. However, in some cases, even in such a case where CCs are in the same frequency band, it may be desirable for different CCs 225 to have different TCI states. For example, if the first CC 225-a has a relatively light traffic load, relatively few TCI states may be sufficient to provide sufficient beams for communications on the first CC 225-a. Continuing with this example, if the second CC 225-b has a relatively heavy traffic load, the relatively few TCI states of the first CC 225-a may be insufficient, and it may be desirable to have additional available TCI states to provide additional beams from which communication beams can be selected to avoid interfering with beams of other devices. Conventionally, in order to configure such different active TCI state sets, multiple MAC-CEs may need to be transmitted to communicate the different active TCI state sets for the two CCs 225. In order to reduce the number of MAC-CEs 220 used to communicate different active TCI state sets for different CCs 225, aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for communicating different active TCI state sets within the same MAC-CE 220. In some cases, a single MAC-CE 220 may be used to activate two or more CCs 225 with different active TCI state sets at each CC 225.

[0107] For example, a first activated TCI state set may be selected or associated with a first CC 225-a (e.g., by a base station 105-a), and a second activated TCI state set may be selected or associated with a second CC 225-b for a second CC 225-b. Although the first and second CCs 225 and TCI states are discussed herein in various examples, the techniques provided herein may be used for any number of CCs or BWPs. In some cases, the MAC-CE 220 may include several octets 230 that may be used to activate different CCs. For example, each octet 230 may indicate an activated serving cell ID and a BWP ID. In some cases, a reserved bit (R) in each octet 230 may indicate whether the TCI state associated with the activated CC / BWP is to be applied to other CCs / BWPs. For example, if the reserved bit in the first octet 230-a is set to zero, the TCI state associated with the indicated CC / BWP may not be applied to other CC / BWPs. However, if the reserved bit is set to one, one or more TCI states of the CC / BWP indicated in the first octet 230-a may be applied to one or more other CC / BWPs. In some cases, the TCI state of the CC / BWP indicated in the first octet 230-a may be associated with a first reference signal (e.g., beamforming parameters (such as QCL type D parameters) for receiving the first reference signal may be used for data communication via the indicated CC / BWP), and for each remaining CC 225 in a group of CCs (e.g., CCs in the same frequency band), an activated TCI state with the same first reference signal may be provided (i.e., TCI states with the same QCL type D reference signal are activated in other CCs). Therefore, the corresponding activated TCI states of the other CCs 225 may have different TCI state IDs, but may be activated based on the QCL type D parameters. In some examples, the corresponding activated TCI states of other CCs 225 may have different TCI state IDs and have different QCL type D parameters.

[0108] In some cases, the indication of the TCI state ID may be implicit and may be based on the MAC-CE 220. The implicit MAC-CE 220 indication may be transmitted by the base station 105-a, which may include a MAC-CE 220 that identifies the TCI state ID for the CORESET ID of the specified CC 225 or CCs 225. The UE 115-a may apply the indicated TCI state ID to the identified CC 225. The UE 115-a may also be configured with other CCs 225 with the same TCI state as the CC 225 indicated in the MAC-CE 220, and the UE 115-a may also apply the indicated TCI state ID to additional CCs 225 with the same TCI state, even if the additional CCs are not explicitly specified in the MAC-CE 220. The TCI state ID may be applied to the additional CCs 225 for at least PDCCH communications.

[0109] In accordance with some aspects, an indication of a TCI state ID may be explicitly transmitted from the base station 105-a to the UE 115-a. For example, the MAC-CE 220 may be formatted to include a CORESET TCI selection using a list of CC sets to which the indicated TCI state ID is to be applied. The UE 115-a may receive the list of CC IDs in the MAC-CE 220 and apply the indicated TCI state ID to the CC 225 indicated by the list. In another example, the set of CCs 225 that share the same MAC-CE 220 command is indicated outside of or separately from the MAC-CE 220. For example, the link 215 may be used by the base station 105-a to transmit RRC signaling or a separate control message (e.g., a separate MAC-CE) indicating the set of CCs to share the MAC-CE 220.

[0110] The UE 115-a may then receive downlink control information from the base station 105-a (e.g., via the PDCCH) according to the indicated TCI state ID for one or more CCs 225 (e.g., using the same configured beam or other transmission parameters) after applying the TCI state ID indicated in the MAC-CE 220 or via the link 215. In some cases, different formats of MAC-CE 220 may be used to indicate activated TCI state sets and activated BWP / CCs. In some cases, the MAC-CE 220 may indicate the number of activated BWP / CCs and may also indicate activated TCI states for multiple BWP / CCs. Various examples of different MAC-CE 220 formats are discussed herein, but the examples provided herein are not considered limiting, and other MAC-CE formats that activate different TCI state sets for different BWP / CCs are within the scope of the present disclosure.

[0111] In some cases, a MAC-CE may activate the same set of TCI state IDs for all active BWPs on the same cell group and CCs in the same frequency band on frequency range 2 (FR2) (i.e., mmWave bands). In this case, when operating in this mode, the UE 115-a may expect to configure the same QCL Type D reference signal for the same TCI state ID for all BWPs on the same cell group and CCs in the same frequency band. In this case, for activation, a MAC-CE with an indicated activated TCI state ID received on any active BWP in the frequency band(s) or cell group may be applied to each active BWP on the cell group and CCs in the frequency band.

[0112] In other cases, communications may use frequency range 1 (FR1) (i.e., sub-6 GHz bands), and the MAC-CE 220 may activate one TCI state ID set (including both QCL Type A and Type D reference signals). In this case, QCL Type D may provide spatial reception parameters, and QCL Type A may provide Doppler and delay reception parameters. In this case, the TCI state ID set for the active BWP of the CC indicated by the MAC-CE may be applied to all active BWPs on CCs in the same cell group and the same frequency band (e.g., the QCL Type A reference signal applied to each CC / BWP is the signal corresponding to the same resource ID(s) indicated by the TCI state ID).

[0113] Figure 3An example of a component carrier configuration 300 supporting a transmission configuration indicator state activation technique for carrier aggregation according to aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the component carrier configuration 300 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. In this example, two or more CCs 305 (including a first CC 310 and a second CC 315) can be configured in the same frequency band. Figure 2 As indicated, each CC 305 may be configured with up to four BWPs.

[0114] In this example, each CC 305 may be in the same 28 GHz frequency band (i.e., FR2), and their channel properties are very similar. That is, the UE may receive one signal in the first CC 310 using the same beam as another signal in the second CC 315. Therefore, changing the TCI state for both CCs 305 at the same time may be relatively efficient (i.e., less overhead). Figure 2 As discussed, in some cases, it may be desirable for the first CC 310 and the second CC 315 to have different sets of active TCI states. For example, to avoid interference in a relatively congested channel (where multiple different devices may use the same frequency band), additional available beams for communications using the second CC 315 may be desired, and different beams may provide directional communications to avoid mutual interference. Therefore, in this example, the first CC 310 and at least one activated BWP of the first CC 310 may have a first set of activated TCI states. In addition, the second CC 315 and at least one activated BWP of the second CC 315 may have a second set of activated TCI states that is different from the first set of activated TCI states. Various techniques discussed herein provide for activating such different sets of TCI states using a single MAC-CE.

[0115] Figure 4 Another example of a wireless communication system 400 supporting transmission configuration indicator state activation techniques for carrier aggregation according to aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the wireless communication system 400 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. For example, the wireless communication system 400 includes a base station 105-b and a UE 115-b, which can be reference Figure 1 and Figure 2 Examples of corresponding devices described.

[0116] The wireless communication system 400 may support carrier aggregation using multiple CCs 425. The UE 115-b and the base station 105-b may communicate on links 405, 410, and optionally on link 415. For example, link 405 may support communications using CCs 425-a, 425-b, and 425-c, and additional CCs 425 may also be supported on link 405 (e.g., 16 uplink CCs 425 or 16 downlink CCs 425 may be used for carrier aggregation on link 405). In some systems, the MAC-CE 420 may be used to change the set of active TCI states for data communications (e.g., PDSCH, PUSCH) in the BWP 430 for the CC 425 or the serving cell. In order to reduce the number of MAC-CEs 420 used to communicate the active TCI state set for the same active BWP 430 in each CC 425 that is spatially QCL, a single MAC-CE 420 may be used to select an active TCI state set for the PDSCH that is applicable to multiple BWP 330CC 425 pairs (e.g., uplink and downlink pairs of CC 425).

[0117] In this example, the number of different TCI state sets can be preconfigured according to the number of TCI state mappings. For example, the base station 105-b can preconfigure several TCI state mappings and transmit these mappings to the UE 115-b in RRC signaling on the link 415. In a specific example, the first BWP 430-a may have two preconfigured activation / deactivation mappings, which include a first mapping with active TCI state = {1, 2, 3, 4}; and inactive TCI state = {5, 6, 7, 8}. The second mapping may have active TCI state = {5, 6, 7, 8}; and inactive TCI state = {1, 2, 3, 4}. In such an example, the MAC-CE 420 may indicate which mapping is to be used for TCI state activation / deactivation and include the CC or serving cell ID, the associated BWP ID, and the ID of the TCI state activation / deactivation mapping for each BWP ID. The MAC-CE 420 of this example also includes a reserved bit (R) that can be reserved for future use.

[0118] Figure 5 Another example of a wireless communication system 500 that supports transmission configuration indicator state activation techniques for carrier aggregation according to aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the wireless communication system 500 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. For example, the wireless communication system 500 includes a base station 105-c and a UE 115-c, which can be referenced Figure 1 , Figure 2 and Figure 4 Examples of corresponding devices described.

[0119] The wireless communication system 500 may support carrier aggregation using multiple CCs 525. The UE 115-c and the base station 105-c may communicate on links 505, 510, and optionally on link 515 (e.g., for RRC signaling). For example, link 505 may support communications using CCs 525-a, 525-c, and 525-c, and additional CCs 525 may also be supported on link 505 (e.g., 16 uplink CCs 525 or 16 downlink CCs 525 may be used for carrier aggregation on link 505). In some systems, the MAC-CE 520 may be used to change the active TCI state set for data communications (e.g., PDSCH, PUSCH) in the BWP 530 for the CC 525 or the serving cell. To reduce the number of MAC-CEs 520 used to communicate the active TCI state set for the same active BWP 530 in each CC 525 that is spatially QCL, a single MAC-CE 520 may be used to select an active TCI state set for PDSCH that is applicable to multiple BWP 530CC 525 pairs.

[0120] In this example, a relatively limited number of available TCI states may be activated at any one time. The remaining configured TCI states will be inactive. In some cases, an indication of the available TCI states may be provided via RRC signaling on link 515. In some cases, the number of available TCI states may be limited by the number of bits that can be used to signal which TCI states are activated. For example, MAC-CE 520 may include an identification of each TCI state to be activated for a serving cell or CCID of a bandwidth portion, as well as the bandwidth portion ID. If n bits are used to indicate the TCI state ID to be activated, up to 2 TCI states may be configured. n TCI states. As indicated, in some cases, the configured TCI states can be indicated to the UE 115-c via RRC signaling. A single MAC-CE 520 message can then explicitly indicate which TCI states are active and the remaining TCI states are inactive. In some cases, several octets can be provided in the MAC-CE 520, and if n bits are small enough, two or more TCI states can be indicated by a single octet. For example, if 16 TCI states can be activated, four bits can be used to identify the TCI state ID, and two TCI state IDs can be provided in the octet of the MAC-CE 520. The MAC-CE 520 of this example also includes a reserved bit (R) that can be reserved for future use.

[0121] Figure 6An example of a process flow 600 for supporting a transmission configuration indicator state activation technique for carrier aggregation according to aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the process flow 600 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100, 200, 400, or 500. The process flow 600 may include a base station 105-d and a UE 115-d, which may be as described with reference to Figures 1 to 5 Examples of corresponding devices described.

[0122] The base station 105-d and the UE 115-d may establish a connection at 605. For example, a random access procedure and an associated RRC connection establishment procedure may be performed to establish the connection. In some cases, the connection may use carrier aggregation for communication on two or more CCs.

[0123] At 610, the base station 105-d may identify two or more active TCI state sets for each of the two or more CCs. In some cases, a first active TCI state set may be identified for the first CC and a second active TCI state set may be identified for the second CC.

[0124] At 615, the base station 105-d may transmit a control message (e.g., a single MAC-CE) to the UE 115-d. The control message may indicate the identified active CCs (and / or BWPs) and the associated activated TCI state set associated with each CC. In some cases, the MAC-CE may have a state such as in Figure 2 , Figure 4 or Figure 5 The format discussed in the example of and can provide an indication of an activated TCI state set with relatively little overhead while providing the system with the flexibility to select an appropriate TCI state for a particular CC.

[0125] At 620, UE 115-d may receive the control message and determine the active TCI state for each CC / BWP. The determination of the active TCI state may be made based on information provided by the MAC-CE, such as in Figure 2 , Figure 4 or Figure 5 discussed in the example of .

[0126] At 625 , UE 115 - d may apply the first active TCI state set to the first CC based on the determination at 620 .

[0127] In addition, at 630, UE 115-d may apply a second active TCI state set to the second CC based on the determination at 620.

[0128] At 635, UE 115-d may transmit or receive communications to or from base station 105-d based on the determination at 620 and the applied active TCI set.

[0129] Figure 7 A block diagram 700 of a device 705 supporting transmission configuration indicator state activation techniques for carrier aggregation according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The device 705 may be an example of aspects of a UE 115 as described herein. The device 705 may include a receiver 710, a communication manager 715, and a transmitter 720. The device 705 may also include a processor. Each of these components may be in communication with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0130] The receiver 710 may receive information such as packets, user data, or control information associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels, data channels, and information related to transmission configuration indicator state activation techniques for carrier aggregation, etc.). The information may be passed to other components of the device 705. The receiver 710 may be a reference Fig.10 Examples of various aspects of the transceiver 1020 are described. The receiver 710 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of antennas.

[0131] The communication manager 715 may receive a media access control-control element from a network entity, the media access control-control element indicating two or more active transmission configuration indicator state sets for a set of component carriers configured for the UE; determine a first active transmission configuration indicator state set for a first component carrier and a second active transmission configuration indicator state set for a second component carrier based on the received media access control-control element, wherein the first active transmission configuration indicator state set is different from the second active transmission configuration indicator state set; and based on the determination, communicate with the network entity using at least the first component carrier and the second component carrier. The communication manager 715 may be an example of aspects of the communication manager 1010 described herein.

[0132] The communication manager 715 can receive a media access control-control element that indicates a set of one or more active transmission configuration indicator states for multiple component carriers configured for the UE; determine, at least in part based on the received media access control-control element, that the set of one or more active transmission configuration indicator states is associated with a first component carrier and a second component carrier among the multiple component carriers; and, based at least in part on the determination, use at least the first component carrier and the second component carrier to communicate with a network entity.

[0133] The communication manager 715 may be an example of an apparatus for performing various aspects of the transmission configuration indicator state activation techniques for carrier aggregation as described herein. The communication manager 715 or its subcomponents may be implemented in hardware, code (e.g., software or firmware) executed by a processor, or any combination thereof. If implemented in code executed by a processor, the functions of the communication manager 715 or its subcomponents may be performed by a general purpose processor, DSP, application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), FPGA or other programmable logic device designed to perform the functions described in the present disclosure, discrete gate or transistor logic, discrete hardware components, or any combination thereof.

[0134] In another implementation, the communication manager 715 or its subcomponents may be implemented in code executed by a processor (e.g., as communication management software or firmware), or any combination thereof. If implemented in code executed by a processor, the functionality of the communication manager 715 or its subcomponents may be performed by a general purpose processor, a digital signal processor (DSP), an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), a field programmable gate array (FPGA), or other programmable logic device.

[0135] In some examples, communications manager 715 may be configured to perform various operations (eg, receive, determine, communicate) using or otherwise in cooperation with receiver 710, transmitter 720, or both.

[0136] The communication manager 715 or its subcomponents may be physically located at various locations, including being distributed such that portions of the functionality are implemented by one or more physical components at different physical locations. In some examples, according to various aspects of the present disclosure, the communication manager 715 or its subcomponents may be separate and distinct components. In some examples, according to various aspects of the present disclosure, the communication manager 715 or its subcomponents may be combined with one or more other hardware components (including, but not limited to, input / output (I / O) components, a transceiver, a network server, another computing device, one or more other components described in the present disclosure, or a combination thereof).

[0137] The actions performed by the communication manager 715 as described herein may be implemented to achieve one or more potential benefits. One implementation may allow the UE 115 to save power and increase battery life by reducing signaling by using a single MAC-CE command to select multiple active TCI state sets for PDSCH that may be applied to multiple BWP / CCs. Another implementation may provide improved quality of service and reliability at the UE 115 because latency and the number of separate resources allocated to the UE 115 may be reduced.

[0138] The transmitter 720 may transmit signals generated by other components of the device 705. In some examples, the transmitter 720 may be co-located with the receiver 710 in a transceiver module. For example, the transmitter 720 may be a reference Fig.10 Examples of aspects of the described transceiver 1020. The transmitter 720 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of antennas.

[0139] Figure 8 A block diagram 800 of a device 805 supporting transmission configuration indicator state activation techniques for carrier aggregation according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The device 805 may be an example of aspects of the device 705 or UE 115 as described herein. The device 805 may include a receiver 810, a communication manager 815, and a transmitter 835. The device 805 may also include a processor. Each of these components may be in communication with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0140] The receiver 810 may receive information such as packets, user data, or control information associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels, data channels, and information related to transmission configuration indicator state activation techniques for carrier aggregation, etc.). The information may be passed to other components of the device 805. The receiver 810 may be a reference Fig.10 Examples of various aspects of the transceiver 1020 are described. The receiver 810 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of antennas.

[0141] The communication manager 815 may be an example of aspects of the communication manager 715 as described herein. The communication manager 815 may include a control receiver 820, a CC configuration manager 825, and a CC transceiver 830. The communication manager 815 may be an example of aspects of the communication manager 1010 as described herein.

[0142] The control receiver 820 may receive a media access control-control element from a network entity, the media access control-control element indicating two or more sets of active transmission configuration indicator states for a set of component carriers configured for the UE. In some examples, the control receiver 820 may receive a first plurality of entries in the media access control-control element, each of the first plurality of entries being associated with a corresponding component carrier in the plurality of component carriers, each entry in the first plurality of entries providing a component carrier identifier and a bandwidth portion identifier; and receive at least a second entry other than the first plurality of entries in the media access control-control element, the at least second entry indicating one or more active transmission configuration indicator states for two or more component carriers or bandwidth portions in the plurality of component carriers or bandwidth portions.

[0143] The CC configuration manager 825 may determine a first active transmission configuration indicator state set for a first component carrier and a second active transmission configuration indicator state set for a second component carrier based on the received media access control-control element, wherein the first active transmission configuration indicator state set is different from the second active transmission configuration indicator state set.

[0144] The CC transceiver 830 may communicate with the network entity using at least the first component carrier and the second component carrier based on the determination.

[0145] The transmitter 835 can transmit signals generated by other components of the device 805. In some examples, the transmitter 835 can be co-located with the receiver 810 in a transceiver module. For example, the transmitter 835 can be a reference Fig.10 Examples of aspects of the described transceiver 1020. The transmitter 835 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of antennas.

[0146] Fig. 9 A block diagram 900 of a communication manager 905 supporting transmission configuration indicator state activation techniques for carrier aggregation according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The communication manager 905 may be an example of aspects of the communication manager 715, the communication manager 815, or the communication manager 1010 described herein. The communication manager 905 may include a control receiver 910, a CC configuration manager 915, a CC transceiver 920, a TCI state manager 925, a reference signal manager 930, a TCI state mapping component 935, and a QCL manager 940. Each of these modules may communicate directly or indirectly with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0147] The control receiver 910 may receive a medium access control-control element from a network entity, the medium access control-control element indicating two or more active transmission configuration indicator state sets for a set of component carriers configured for the UE.

[0148] The CC configuration manager 915 may determine a first active transmission configuration indicator state set for a first component carrier and a second active transmission configuration indicator state set for a second component carrier based on the received media access control-control element, wherein the first active transmission configuration indicator state set is different from the second active transmission configuration indicator state set.

[0149] The CC transceiver 920 may communicate with the network entity using at least the first component carrier and the second component carrier based on the determination.

[0150] The TCI state manager 925 may receive an activation command for the first component carrier in the media access control-control element, wherein the activation command includes a first bit that is set to indicate that different active transmission configuration indicator state sets are activated for different component carriers in the component carrier set.

[0151] In some examples, the TCI state manager 925 may identify a first active transmission configuration indicator state based on the activation command for the first component carrier. In some examples, the TCI state manager 925 may activate one or more transmission configuration indicator states associated with the first reference signal of at least the second component carrier. In some examples, the TCI state manager 925 may activate a transmission configuration indicator state associated with the first reference signal of each remaining component carrier in the set of component carriers. In some examples, the TCI state manager 925 may repeat the identification and activation for one or more other active transmission configuration indicator states provided in the media access control-control element including the first bit, the first bit being set to indicate that a different set of active transmission configuration indicator states is activated.

[0152] In some examples, the TCI state manager 925 may receive configuration information indicating a subset of available transmission configuration indicator states, wherein the subset is less than the total number of configurable transmission configuration indicator states. In some examples, the media access control-control element explicitly indicates which transmission configuration indicator states are active for each component carrier. In some cases, the media access control-control element includes a first set of bits associated with the first component carrier, indicating which transmission configuration indicator states in the subset of available transmission configuration indicator states are in the first set of active transmission configuration indicator states. In some cases, the media access control-control element includes a second set of bits associated with the second component carrier, indicating which transmission configuration indicator states in the subset of available transmission configuration indicator states are in the second set of active transmission configuration indicator states.

[0153] In some cases, the media access control-control element includes a first set of entries, each entry in the first set of entries is associated with a corresponding component carrier in the set of component carriers, and each entry in the first set of entries provides a component carrier identifier and a bandwidth portion identifier. In some cases, the media access control-control element includes at least a second entry outside the first set of entries, the at least second entry indicating one or more active transmission configuration indicator states for two or more component carriers or bandwidth portions in the set of component carriers or bandwidth portions.

[0154] Reference signal manager 930 may identify a first reference signal associated with the first active transmission configuration indicator state.

[0155] The TCI state mapping component 935 can identify two or more active transmission configuration indicator state mappings for the first component carrier and the second component carrier. In some examples, the TCI state mapping component 935 can receive an activation command in the media access control-control element for a first mapping associated with the first active transmission configuration indicator state set in the set of one or more active transmission configuration indicator states. In some examples, the TCI state mapping component 935 can activate the first active transmission configuration indicator state set for the first component carrier based on the mapping.

[0156] In some cases, the activation command for the first active transmission configuration indicator state set indicates one or more bandwidth part identifiers and an identifier of the first active transmission configuration indicator state set. In some cases, the mapping may be received from a base station in radio resource control signaling.

[0157] The QCL manager 940 may identify QCL parameters associated with the TCI state. In some cases, the transmission configuration indicator states associated with the set of component carriers are located in the same cell group in the millimeter wave frequency band with the same identification and have the same spatial quasi-co-location parameters associated with them (i.e., the same TCI state in two CCs corresponds to the same beam). For example, a first TCI state in a first CC may have a first QCL type D reference signal, and the first TCI state in a second CC also has a first QCL type D reference signal, and so on for the second, third, and fourth TCI states of the first and second CCs. In some cases, the activated transmission configuration indicator states in the component carriers and bandwidth portions in the sub-6 GHz band use Doppler or delay related quasi-co-located reference signals associated with the bandwidth portion associated with the activated transmission configuration indicator state (e.g., if the same TCI state is activated in different BWPs and QCL type A is defined, the QCL type A reference signal from the first BWP can be used to activate the same TCI state in the second BWP).
