[0002] Cross-references

[0003] This patent application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 962,814, filed on January 17, 2020 by Ly et al., entitled “Reference SignalMonitoring Occasion Updates for Idle and Inactive User Equipment,” and U.S. Patent Application No. 17 / 148,768, filed on January 14, 2021 by Ly et al., entitled “Reference SignalMonitoring Occasion Updates for Idle and Inactive User Equipment,” each of which is assigned to the present assignee. Technical Field

[0004] The following relates generally to wireless communications, and more particularly to reference signal monitoring opportunity updates for idle and inactive user equipment (UE). Background Art

[0005] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content, such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, etc. These systems may be able to support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power). Examples of such multiple access systems include fourth generation (4G) systems, such as long term evolution (LTE) systems, LTE advanced (LTE-A) systems, or LTE-A Pro systems, and fifth generation (5G) systems (which may be referred to as new radio (NR) systems). These systems may use techniques such as code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), or discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM). A wireless multiple access communication system may include multiple base stations or network access nodes, each of which simultaneously supports communication with multiple communication devices, which may be referred to as user equipment (UE).

[0006] The UE may enter a low power mode to save battery. When the UE is in a low power state, the configuration of the serving cell may change. Some techniques for indicating configuration updates to the UE in a low power mode may be insufficient and may be improved. Summary of the invention

[0007] The described technology relates to improved methods, systems, devices and apparatuses for supporting reference signal monitoring opportunity updates for idle and inactive UEs. In general, the described technology provides for configuring reference signal opportunities for user equipment (UE) when the UE is in an inactive mode or idle mode. The UE can enter an inactive mode or idle mode to save battery. A UE in an inactive mode or idle mode can sleep for most of a discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle and wake up periodically to monitor paging messages. If the UE does not detect a paging message indicating the presence of data or a call, the UE can return to sleep until the next paging opportunity.

[0008] The UE may be configured to monitor reference signals, such as tracking reference signals (TRS) and channel state information (CSI) reference signals (CSI-RS), when the UE is in an inactive mode or idle mode. The base station may configure the timing of the reference signal for the UE, during which the base station sends the corresponding reference signal. In some cases, the configuration of the reference signal timing may be updated when the UE is in an inactive mode or idle mode. The technology described herein supports configuring updated reference signal timing for the UE when the UE is in an inactive mode or idle mode. For example, when the UE is in an inactive mode or idle mode, the UE may receive an indication of a potential TRS or CSI-RS timing. In some cases, the reference signal timing may be indicated to the UE via paging downlink control information (DCI) or a paging message. In some examples, the reference signal timing may be indicated to the UE via system information.

[0085] A user equipment (UE) in a wireless communication system can enter a low power mode to save battery and improve power saving. For example, some wireless communication systems can support an inactive mode and an idle mode for UEs. A UE operating in an inactive mode or an idle mode can spend less time monitoring signaling from a base station, thereby reducing power consumption. A UE in an inactive mode or an idle mode can sleep for most of a discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle and wake up periodically to monitor paging messages. If the UE does not detect a paging message indicating the presence of data or a call, the UE can return to sleep until the next paging opportunity.

[0086] When the UE operates in active mode or connected mode, the base station can manage the radio resource management of the UE based on UE mobility, radio channel quality, or both. For example, the base station can track the location and positioning of the UE to provide the UE with a strong connection and beam to communicate with nearby cells. In some cases, the base station can send a tracking reference signal (TRS) to the UE, which can be used to track the location of the UE within the wireless communication system. In order to measure the channel conditions of the UE, the base station can send a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS). The UE can measure the CSI-RS and provide a CSI report indicating various radio channel quality measurements to the base station.

[0087] The base station can configure the timing of reference signals such as TRS and CSI-RS for the UE. The timing may include the time and frequency resources for the base station to send the reference signal. The timing may have a configured periodicity and pattern in the time domain and the frequency domain. In some cases, when the UE is in an inactive mode or an idle mode, the configuration of the reference signal timing may be updated. Once the UE enters a connected mode, some systems may provide an updated configuration to the UE. However, signaling the updated configuration once the UE is in a connected mode may have a large system overhead.

[0088] In order to reduce signaling overhead, a wireless communication system may support configuring a reference signal opportunity for a UE when the UE is in an inactive mode or an idle mode. For example, when the UE is in an inactive mode or an idle mode, the UE may receive a potential TRS or CSI-RS opportunity that is available when the UE is in a connected mode. In some cases, the reference signal opportunity may be indicated to the UE via paging downlink control information (DCI) or a paging message. For example, the paging DCI may include a TRS / CSI-RS opportunity configuration. In some cases, the paging DCI may indicate that the TRS / CSI-RS opportunity configuration is included in the paging message. In some examples, the reference signal opportunity may be indicated to the UE via system information. The base station may send a system information change indication, and the UE may monitor the system information based on receipt of the indication. Additional techniques are described, such as configuring how long the UE uses the updated configuration.

[0089] Aspects of the present disclosure are initially described in the context of wireless communication systems. Various aspects of the present disclosure are further illustrated and described by apparatus diagrams, system diagrams, and flow diagrams involving reference signal monitoring opportunity updates for idle and inactive UEs.

[0090] Figure 1 An example of a wireless communication system 100 supporting reference signal monitoring opportunity updates for idle and inactive UEs according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The wireless communication system 100 includes a base station 105, a UE 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may be a long term evolution (LTE) network, an LTE advanced (LTE-A) network, an LTE-A Pro network, or a new radio (NR) network. In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may support enhanced broadband communications, ultra-reliable (e.g., mission-critical) communications, low-latency communications, or communications with low-cost and low-complexity devices.

[0091] The base station 105 may communicate wirelessly with the UE 115 via one or more base station antennas. The base station 105 described herein may include or may be referred to by those skilled in the art as a base transceiver, a radio base station, an access point, a radio transceiver, a NodeB, an eNodeB (eNB), a next generation NodeB or a giga-NodeB (any of which may be referred to as a gNB), a home NodeB, a home eNodeB, or some other suitable terminology. The wireless communication system 100 may include different types of base stations 105 (e.g., macro or small cell base stations). The UE 115 described herein may be able to communicate with various types of base stations 105 and network devices including macro eNBs, small cell eNBs, gNBs, relay base stations, etc.

[0092] Each base station 105 may be associated with a particular geographic coverage area 110 in which communications with various UEs 115 are supported. Each base station 105 may provide communications coverage for the respective geographic coverage area 110 via a communications link 125, and the communications link 125 between the base station 105 and the UE 115 may utilize one or more carriers. The communications link 125 shown in the wireless communication system 100 may include an uplink transmission from the UE 115 to the base station 105, or a downlink transmission from the base station 105 to the UE 115. Downlink transmissions may also be referred to as forward link transmissions, and uplink transmissions may also be referred to as reverse link transmissions.

[0093] The geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105 can be divided into sectors that constitute a portion of the geographic coverage area 110, and each sector can be associated with a cell. For example, each base station 105 can provide communication coverage for a macro cell, a small cell, a hotspot, or other type of cell, or various combinations thereof. In some examples, the base station 105 can be mobile, thereby providing communication coverage for a mobile geographic coverage area 110. In some examples, different geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies can overlap, and overlapping geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies can be supported by the same base station 105 or different base stations 105. The wireless communication system 100 may include, for example, heterogeneous LTE / LTE-A / LTE-APro or NR networks in which different types of base stations 105 provide coverage for various geographic coverage areas 110.

[0094] The term "cell" refers to a logical communication entity for communicating with a base station 105 (e.g., via a carrier), and may be associated with an identifier (e.g., a physical cell identifier (PCID), a virtual cell identifier (VCID)) for distinguishing adjacent cells operating via the same or different carriers. In some examples, a carrier may support multiple cells, and different cells may be configured according to different protocol types (e.g., machine type communication (MTC), narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT), enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), or other) that may provide access to different types of devices. In some cases, the term "cell" may refer to a portion of a geographic coverage area 110 (e.g., a sector) on which the logical entity operates.

[0095] UE 115 may be dispersed throughout the wireless communication system 100, and each UE 115 may be stationary or mobile. UE 115 may also be referred to as a mobile device, wireless device, remote device, handheld device, or subscriber device, or some other suitable terminology, where "device" may also be referred to as a unit, station, terminal, or client. UE 115 may also be a personal electronic device, such as a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a multimedia / entertainment device (e.g., a radio, an MP3 player, a video device, etc.), a camera, a gaming device, a navigation / positioning device (e.g., a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) device, such as based on GPS (Global Positioning System), Beidou, GLONASS or Galileo, a ground-based device, etc.), a tablet, a laptop or a personal computer, a netbook, a smartbook, a personal computer, a smart device, a wearable device (e.g., a smart watch, smart clothing, smart glasses, virtual reality goggles, a smart wristband, smart jewelry (e.g., a smart ring, a smart bracelet)), a drone, a robot / robotic device, a vehicle, an on-board device, a meter (e.g., a parking meter, an electricity meter, a gas meter, a water meter), a display, a gas pump, an appliance (e.g., a kitchen appliance, a washing machine, a dryer), a location tag, a medical / health care device, an implant, a sensor / actuator, a display, or any other suitable device configured to communicate via a wireless or wired medium. In some examples, UE 115 may also refer to a wireless local loop (WLL) station, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, an Internet of Everything (IoE) device, or an MTC device, etc., which may be implemented in various items such as home appliances, vehicles, meters, etc.

[0096] Some UEs 115, such as MTC or IoT devices, may be low-cost or low-complexity devices and may provide automatic communication between machines (e.g., via machine-to-machine (M2M) communication). M2M communication or MTC may refer to data communication technology that allows devices to communicate with each other or with a base station 105 without human intervention. In some examples, M2M communication or MTC may include communication from devices that integrate sensors or meters to measure or capture information and relay the information to a central server or application, which may utilize the information or present the information to a person interacting with the program or application. Some UEs 115 may be designed to collect information or implement automated behavior of machines. Application examples of MTC devices include smart metering, inventory monitoring, water level monitoring, equipment monitoring, healthcare monitoring, wildlife monitoring, weather and geological event monitoring, fleet management and tracking, remote security sensing, physical access control, and transaction-based service charging. In one aspect, the technology disclosed herein may be applicable to MTC or IoT UEs. MTC or IOT UE may include MTC / enhanced MTC (eMTC, also known as CAT-M, Cat M1) UE, NB-IoT (also known as CAT NB1) UE, and other types of UE. eMTC and NB-IoT may refer to future technologies that may evolve from or may be based on these technologies. For example, eMTC may include FeMTC (further eMTC), eFeMTC (enhanced further eMTC), mMTC (massive MTC), etc., and NB-IoT may include eNB-IoT (enhanced NB-IoT), FeNB-IoT (further enhanced NB-IoT), etc.

[0097] Some UEs 115 may be configured to employ a reduced power consumption mode of operation, such as half-duplex communication (e.g., a mode that supports one-way communication via transmission or reception, but not simultaneous transmission and reception). In some examples, half-duplex communication may be performed at a reduced peak rate. Other power saving techniques for UE 115 include entering a power saving "deep sleep" mode when not engaged in active communications or operating over limited bandwidth (e.g., in accordance with narrowband communications). In some cases, UE 115 may be designed to support critical functions (e.g., mission critical functions), and the wireless communication system 100 may be configured to provide ultra-reliable communications for these functions.

[0098] In some cases, the UE 115 may also communicate directly with other UEs 115 (e.g., using a peer-to-peer (P2P) or device-to-device (D2D) protocol). One or more of the group of UEs 115 utilizing D2D communication may be within the geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105. Other UEs 115 in such a group may be outside the geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105 or may not be able to receive transmissions from the base station 105. In some cases, the group of UEs 115 communicating via D2D communication may utilize a one-to-many (1:M) system in which each UE 115 transmits to each other UE 115 in the group. In some cases, the base station 105 facilitates the scheduling of resources for D2D communication. In other cases, D2D communication is performed between UEs 115 without involving the base station 105.

[0099] The base stations 105 may communicate with the core network 130 and with each other. For example, the base stations 105 may interface with the core network 130 via a backhaul link 132 (e.g., via S1, N2, N3, or other interface). The base stations 105 may communicate with each other directly (e.g., directly between the base stations 105) or indirectly (e.g., via the core network 130) via a backhaul link 134 (e.g., via X2, Xn, or other interface).

[0100] The core network 130 may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connections, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 130 may be an evolved packet core (EPC), which may include at least one mobile management entity (MME), at least one serving gateway (S-GW), and at least one packet data network (PDN) gateway (P-GW). The MME may manage non-access stratum (e.g., control plane) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management, for UE 115 served by a base station 105 associated with the EPC. User IP packets may be transmitted through the S-GW, which itself may be connected to the P-GW. The P-GW may provide IP address allocation and other functions. The P-GW may be connected to a network operator IP service. Operator IP services may include access to the Internet, (multiple) intranets, IP multimedia subsystems (IMS), or packet switched (PS) streaming services.

[0101] At least some network devices, such as base stations 105, may include subcomponents such as access network entities, which may be examples of access node controllers (ANCs). Each access network entity may communicate with UE 115 through several other access network transmission entities, which may be referred to as radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmit / receive points (TRPs). In some configurations, the various functions of each access network entity or base station 105 may be distributed across various network devices (e.g., radio heads and access network controllers) or integrated into a single network device (e.g., base station 105).

[0102] The wireless communication system 100 can operate using one or more frequency bands, typically in the range of 300 megahertz (MHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz). Typically, the region of 300 MHz to 3 GHz is referred to as the ultra-high frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the wavelength range is approximately 1 decimeter to 1 meter long. UHF waves may be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features. However, these waves can penetrate structures enough to allow macro cells to serve UEs 115 indoors. Transmissions using UHF waves can be associated with smaller antennas and shorter ranges (e.g., less than 100 km) than transmissions using smaller frequencies and longer waves in the high frequency (HF) or very high frequency (VHF) portions of the spectrum with frequencies less than 300 MHz.

[0103] The wireless communication system 100 may also operate in the Super High Frequency (SHF) region using frequency bands from 3 GHz to 30 GHz (also known as the centimeter wave bands). The SHF region includes frequency bands such as the 5 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band, which may be used by devices that can tolerate interference from other users.

[0104] The wireless communication system 100 can also operate in the extremely high frequency (EHF) region (e.g., from 30 GHz to 300 GHz), also known as the millimeter wave band. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 can support millimeter wave (mmW) communications between the UE 115 and the base station 105, and the EHF antennas of each device can be smaller and closer than the UHF antennas. In some cases, this can facilitate the use of antenna arrays within the UE 115. However, the propagation of EHF transmissions may be subject to greater atmospheric attenuation and shorter range than SHF or UHF transmissions. The technology disclosed herein can be used across transmissions using one or more different frequency regions, and the designated use of frequency bands across these frequency regions may vary by country or regulatory agency.

[0105] In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 can utilize licensed and unlicensed radio frequency spectrum bands. For example, the wireless communication system 100 can adopt license assisted access (LAA), LTE unlicensed (LTE-U) radio access technology, or NR technology in an unlicensed band such as the 5GHz ISM band. When operating in an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band, wireless devices such as base stations 105 and UE 115 can adopt a listen-before-talk (LBT) process to ensure that the channel is clear before sending data. In some cases, operations in unlicensed bands can be based on carrier aggregation configurations and component carriers operating in licensed bands (e.g., LAA). Operations in unlicensed spectrum may include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, peer-to-peer transmissions, or a combination of these. Duplexing in unlicensed spectrum can be based on frequency division duplexing (FDD), time division duplexing (TDD), or a combination of both.

[0106] In some examples, the base station 105 or the UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas, which may be used to employ techniques such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication, or beamforming. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may use a transmission scheme between a transmitting device (e.g., a base station 105) and a receiving device (e.g., a UE 115), wherein the transmitting device is equipped with multiple antennas and the receiving device is equipped with one or more antennas. MIMO communication may employ multipath signal propagation to improve spectral efficiency by transmitting or receiving multiple signals via different spatial layers, which may be referred to as spatial multiplexing. For example, multiple signals may be transmitted by a transmitting device via different antennas or different combinations of antennas. Similarly, multiple signals may be received by a receiving device via different antennas or different combinations of antennas. Each of the multiple signals may be referred to as a separate spatial stream and may carry bits associated with the same data stream (e.g., the same codeword) or different data streams. Different spatial layers may be associated with different antenna ports for channel measurement and reporting. MIMO technology includes single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO), in which multiple spatial layers are sent to the same receiving device, and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO), in which multiple spatial layers are sent to multiple devices.

[0107] Beamforming, which may also be referred to as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception, is a signal processing technique that may be used at a transmitting device or a receiving device (e.g., a base station 105 or a UE 115) to shape or direct an antenna beam (e.g., a transmit beam or a receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting device and the receiving device. Beamforming may be achieved by combining signals transmitted via antenna elements of an antenna array so that signals propagating in a particular direction relative to the antenna array experience constructive interference while other signals experience destructive interference. Adjustments to signals transmitted via antenna elements may include the transmitting device or the receiving device applying certain amplitude and phase offsets to signals transmitted via each antenna element associated with the device. Adjustments associated with each antenna element may be defined by a set of beamforming weights associated with a particular direction (e.g., relative to the antenna array of the transmitting device or the receiving device, or relative to some other direction).

[0108] In one example, the base station 105 may use multiple antennas or antenna arrays to perform beamforming operations for directional communication with the UE 115. For example, the base station 105 may transmit some signals (e.g., synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) multiple times in different directions, which may include signals transmitted according to different beamforming weight sets associated with different transmission directions. The transmission of different beam directions can be used to identify (e.g., by the base station 105 or a receiving device, such as the UE 115) a beam direction for subsequent transmission and / or reception by the base station 105.

[0109] Some signals, such as data signals associated with a particular receiving device, may be transmitted by base station 105 in a single beam direction (e.g., a direction associated with a receiving device such as UE 115). In some examples, a beam direction associated with transmitting along a single beam direction may be determined based at least in part on signals transmitted in different beam directions. For example, UE 115 may receive one or more of the signals transmitted by base station 105 in different directions, and UE 115 may report to base station 105 an indication of the signal it received with the highest signal quality or other acceptable signal quality. Although these techniques are described with reference to signals transmitted by base station 105 in one or more directions, UE 115 may employ similar techniques for transmitting signals multiple times in different directions (e.g., for identifying a beam direction for subsequent transmission or reception by UE 115), or for transmitting signals in a single direction (e.g., for transmitting data to a receiving device).

[0110] A receiving device (e.g., UE 115, which may be an example of a millimeter wave receiving device) may try multiple receive beams when receiving various signals from base station 105 (e.g., synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals). For example, the receiving device may try multiple receive directions by receiving via different antenna subarrays, by processing received signals according to different antenna subarrays, by receiving according to different receive beamforming weight sets applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, or by processing received signals according to different receive beamforming weight sets applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, any of which may be referred to as "listening" according to different receive beams or receive directions. In some examples, the receiving device may receive along a single beam direction using a single receive beam (e.g., when receiving a data signal). The single receive beam may be aligned in a beam direction determined at least in part based on listening according to different receive beam directions (e.g., a beam direction with the highest signal strength, the highest signal-to-noise ratio, or otherwise acceptable signal quality determined at least in part based on listening according to multiple beam directions).

[0111] In some cases, the antennas of a base station 105 or a UE 115 may be located within one or more antenna arrays that may support MIMO operations, or transmit or receive beamforming. For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be co-located on an antenna assembly (e.g., an antenna tower). In some cases, the antennas or antenna arrays associated with a base station 105 may be located in different geographic locations. A base station 105 may have an antenna array with several rows and columns of antenna ports that the base station 105 may use to support beamforming for communications with a UE 115. Similarly, a UE 115 may have one or more antenna arrays that may support various MIMO or beamforming operations.

[0112] In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 can be a packet-based network operating according to a layered protocol stack. In the user plane, the communication at the bearer or packet data aggregation protocol (PDCP) layer can be IP-based. The radio link control (RLC) layer can perform packet segmentation and reassembly to communicate on a logical channel. The medium access control (MAC) layer can perform priority processing and multiplex logical channels into transport channels. The MAC layer can also use hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) to provide retransmission at the MAC layer to improve link efficiency. In the control plane, the radio resource control (RRC) protocol layer can provide the establishment, configuration and maintenance of the RRC connection between the base station 105 or the core network 130 that supports the radio bearer for user plane data. At the physical layer, the transport channel can be mapped to the physical channel.

[0113] In some cases, UE 115 and base station 105 may support retransmission of data to increase the possibility of successfully receiving data. HARQ feedback is a technique to increase the possibility of correctly receiving data through communication link 125. HARQ may include a combination of error detection (e.g., using cyclic redundancy check (CRC)), forward error correction (FEC) and retransmission (e.g., automatic repeat request (ARQ)). HARQ can improve the throughput of the MAC layer under poor radio conditions (e.g., signal-to-noise ratio conditions). In some cases, a wireless device may support same-slot HARQ feedback, where the device may provide HARQ feedback in a specific time slot for data received in a previous symbol in the time slot. In other cases, the device may provide HARQ feedback in a subsequent time slot or according to some other time interval.

[0114] The time interval in LTE or NR can be expressed as a multiple of the basic time unit. For example, the basic time unit can refer to T s =1 / 30720000 second sampling period. The time interval of the communication resources can be organized according to each radio frame having a duration of 10 milliseconds (ms), where the frame period can be represented as T f =307200T s . A radio frame may be identified by a system frame number (SFN) ranging from 0 to 1023. Each frame may include 10 subframes numbered 0 to 9, and each subframe may have a duration of 1 ms. A subframe may be further divided into 2 slots, each slot having a duration of 0.5 ms, and each slot may contain 6 or 7 modulation symbol periods (e.g., depending on the length of the cyclic prefix preceding each symbol period). In addition to the cyclic prefix, each symbol period may contain 2048 sampling periods. In some cases, a subframe may be the minimum scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 and may be referred to as a transmission time interval (TTI). In other cases, the minimum scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 may be shorter than a subframe, or may be dynamically selected (e.g., in a burst of a shortened TTI (sTTI), or in a component carrier selected using an sTTI).

[0115] In some wireless communication systems, a time slot may be further divided into multiple mini-slots containing one or more symbols. In some cases, a symbol of a mini-slot or a mini-slot may be the minimum unit of scheduling. For example, the duration of each symbol may vary depending on the subcarrier spacing or the operating frequency band. In addition, some wireless communication systems may implement time slot aggregation, where multiple time slots or mini-slots are aggregated and used for communication between UE 115 and base station 105.

[0116] The term "carrier" refers to a collection of radio frequency spectrum resources with a defined physical layer structure for supporting communication over the communication link 125. For example, a carrier of the communication link 125 may include a portion of a radio frequency spectrum band that operates according to a physical layer channel for a given radio access technology. Each physical layer channel may carry user data, control information, or other signaling. A carrier may be associated with a predefined frequency channel (e.g., an Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System Terrestrial Radio Access (E-UTRA) Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number (EARFCN)) and may be located according to a channel raster for discovery by the UE 115. A carrier may be a downlink or uplink (e.g., in FDD mode), or may be configured to carry downlink and uplink communications (e.g., in TDD mode). In some examples, a signal waveform transmitted over a carrier may be composed of multiple subcarriers (e.g., using a multi-carrier modulation (MCM) technique such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM)).

[0117] The organization structure of the carrier may be different for different radio access technologies (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, NR). For example, communications on a carrier can be organized based on TTIs or time slots, where each TTI or time slot can include user data and control information or signaling to support decoding of the user data. The carrier may also include dedicated acquisition signaling (e.g., synchronization signals or system information, etc.) and control signaling to coordinate the operation of the carrier. In some examples (e.g., in a carrier aggregation configuration), the carrier may also have acquisition signaling or control signaling to coordinate the operation of other carriers.

[0118] Physical channels can be multiplexed on a carrier according to various techniques. Physical control channels and physical data channels can be multiplexed on a downlink carrier, for example, using time division multiplexing (TDM) techniques, frequency division multiplexing (FDM) techniques, or hybrid TDM-FDM techniques. In some examples, the control information sent in the physical control channel can be distributed in a cascaded manner between different control regions (e.g., between a common control region or common search space and one or more UE-specific control regions or UE-specific search spaces).

[0119] A carrier may be associated with a particular bandwidth of the radio frequency spectrum, and in some examples, the carrier bandwidth may be referred to as the "system bandwidth" of the carrier or wireless communication system 100. For example, the carrier bandwidth may be one of several predetermined bandwidths of a carrier for a particular radio access technology (e.g., 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, or 80 MHz). In some examples, each serviced UE 115 may be configured to operate on part or all of the carrier bandwidth. In other examples, some UEs 115 may be configured to operate using a narrowband protocol type associated with a predefined portion or range (e.g., a set of subcarriers or RBs) within a carrier (e.g., an "in-band" deployment of a narrowband protocol type).

[0120] In a system using MCM technology, a resource element may include a symbol period (e.g., the duration of a modulation symbol) and a subcarrier, where the symbol period and the subcarrier spacing are inversely related. The number of bits carried by each resource element may depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme). Therefore, the more resource elements received by UE 115 and the higher the order of the modulation scheme, the higher the data rate may be for UE 115. In a MIMO system, wireless communication resources may refer to a combination of radio spectrum resources, time resources, and space resources (e.g., space layers), and the use of multiple space layers may further increase the data rate used to communicate with UE 115.

[0121] A device of the wireless communication system 100 (e.g., a base station 105 or a UE 115) may have a hardware configuration that supports communication on a specific carrier bandwidth, or may be configured to support communication on one of a set of carrier bandwidths. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may include a base station 105 and / or a UE 115 that supports simultaneous communication via carriers associated with more than one different carrier bandwidths.

[0122] The wireless communication system 100 may support communication with the UE 115 on multiple cells or carriers, a feature which may be referred to as carrier aggregation or multi-carrier operation. The UE 115 may be configured with multiple downlink component carriers and one or more uplink component carriers according to a carrier aggregation configuration. Carrier aggregation may be used with both FDD and TDD component carriers.

[0123] In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 can utilize an enhanced component carrier (eCC). An eCC can have one or more characteristics, including a wider carrier or frequency channel bandwidth, a shorter symbol duration, a shorter TTI duration, or a modified control channel configuration. In some cases, an eCC can be associated with a carrier aggregation configuration or a dual connectivity configuration (e.g., when multiple serving cells have suboptimal or non-ideal backhaul links). An eCC can also be configured for use with unlicensed spectrum or shared spectrum (e.g., allowing more than one operator to use the spectrum). An eCC characterized by a wide carrier bandwidth can include one or more segments that can be used by a UE 115 that is not able to monitor the entire carrier bandwidth or is otherwise configured to use a limited carrier bandwidth (e.g., to save power).

[0124] In some cases, the eCC may use a different symbol duration than other component carriers, which may include using a reduced symbol duration compared to the symbol duration of other component carriers. A shorter symbol duration may be associated with an increased spacing between adjacent subcarriers. A device utilizing an eCC, such as a UE 115 or a base station 105, may transmit a wideband signal (e.g., based on a frequency channel or carrier bandwidth of 20, 40, 60, 80 MHz, etc.) at a reduced symbol duration (e.g., 16.67 microseconds). A TTI in an eCC may consist of one or more symbol periods. In some cases, the TTI duration (i.e., the number of symbol periods in a TTI) may be variable.

[0125] The wireless communication system 100 may be an NR system that may utilize any combination of licensed, shared, and unlicensed spectrum bands, etc. The flexibility of eCC symbol duration and subcarrier spacing may allow eCC to be used across multiple spectrums. In some examples, NR shared spectrum may improve spectrum utilization and spectrum efficiency, particularly through dynamic vertical (e.g., across frequency domain) and horizontal (e.g., across time domain) resource sharing.

[0126] When UE 115 does not have much traffic from the serving cell, UE 115 can enter a low power mode to save battery and improve power saving. For example, UE 115 can enter an inactive mode or an idle mode. When UE 115 is in an inactive mode, the last served base station 105 can maintain the access layer context of UE 115 that may have been established by the RRC connection. When UE 115 is in idle mode, the network can discard the UE context.

[0127] When UE 115 operates in an inactive mode or idle mode, UE 115 can spend less time monitoring signaling, thereby reducing power consumption. When operating in an inactive mode or idle mode, UE 115 can sleep for most of the DRX cycle and wake up periodically to monitor paging messages. In some cases, UE 115 can monitor one paging opportunity for each DRX cycle. Each paging opportunity may include a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) monitoring opportunity set, and may include multiple time slots (e.g., multiple subframes or multiple OFDM symbols) in which paging DCI can be sent. UE 115 can attempt to decode the signal using a paging radio network temporary identifier (P-RNTI) to check for messages indicating pending data. If the UE does not detect a paging message indicating the presence of data or a call, the UE can return to sleep until the next paging opportunity.

[0128] Some UEs 115, such as UEs 115 with Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System (ETWS) capabilities and UEs 115 with Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) capabilities, may also monitor public warnings (e.g., via a public warning system). These UEs 115 may monitor for indications about public warning system notifications at paging occasions in each DRX cycle.

[0129] When in inactive mode or idle mode, UE 115 may also monitor system information change indications. System information change indications may be sent on paging occasions to indicate that the configuration or system information has been updated. In some cases, a modification period may be used to broadcast updated system information (e.g., except for ETWS and CMAS). Updated system information may be sent in a modification period after the system information change indication is sent. The modification period boundary may be based on a system frame number (SFN) value, where SFN mod m=0, where m is the number of radio frames including the modification period. The modification period may be configured by system information. UE 115 may receive indications about SI modifications or public warning system (PWS) notifications using a message sent via DCI together with P-RNTI. System information change indications may be sent repeatedly within a modification period.

[0130] When the UE 115 is operating in an active mode or a connected mode, the serving base station 105 may manage some radio resource management operations of the UE 115 based on UE mobility, radio channel quality, or both. For example, the base station 105 may track the location and positioning of the UE 115 to provide a strong connection and beam. For example, if the base station 105 determines that the UE 115 has moved closer to another base station 105, the base station 105 may initiate a handover process to the other base station 105. In addition, if the UE 115 moves within the cell coverage area provided by the base station 105 such that the other beam provides a stronger connection, the base station 105 may switch to the stronger beam.

[0131] The technology described herein supports configuring the timing of reference signals such as TRS and CSI-RS for UE 115 in inactive mode or idle mode. For example, when UE 115 is in inactive mode or idle mode, UE 115 can receive an indication of potential TRS or CSI-RS timings available when UE 115 is in connected mode. In some cases, the reference signal timing can be indicated to UE 115 via paging DCI or paging message. For example, paging DCI can include TRS / CSI-RS timing configuration. In some cases, paging DCI can indicate that the TRS / CSI-RS timing configuration is included in the paging message. In some examples, the reference signal timing can be indicated to the UE via system information. The base station 105 can send a system information change indication, and the UE can monitor the system information based on receiving the indication. Additional techniques are described, such as configuring how long the UE uses the updated configuration.

[0132] Figure 2 An example of a wireless communication system 200 that supports reference signal monitoring opportunity updates for idle and inactive UEs according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. In some examples, the wireless communication system 200 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. The wireless communication system 200 can include a UE 115-a and a base station 105-a, which can be reference signal monitoring opportunities. Figure 1 Corresponding examples of UE 115 and base station 105 are described.

[0133] When UE 115-a has no traffic from a serving cell, UE 115-a may enter a low power mode to save battery and improve power conservation. For example, UE 115-a may enter an inactive mode or an idle mode. When UE 115-a is in an inactive mode, base station 105-a may maintain the UE context established by the RRC connection. When UE 115-a is in an idle mode, base station 105-a may discard the UE context.

[0134] When UE 115-a operates in an inactive mode or idle mode, UE 115-a can spend less time monitoring signaling from base station 105, thereby reducing power consumption. When operating in an inactive mode or idle mode, UE 115-a can sleep for most of the DRX cycle and wake up periodically to monitor paging messages. In some cases, UE 115-a can monitor one paging occasion per DRX cycle. If UE-a does not detect a paging message indicating the presence of data or a call, UE-a can return to sleep until the next paging occasion. When in an inactive mode or idle mode, UE 115-a can also monitor system information change indications. System information change indications can be sent at paging occasions to indicate that configuration or system information has been updated.

[0135] When UE 115-a operates in active mode or connected mode, a serving base station 105, such as base station 105-a, may manage some radio resource management operations for UE 115-a based on UE mobility, radio channel quality, or both. In some cases, base station 105-a may send a TRS to UE 115-a, which may be used to track the location of UE 115-a within wireless communication system 200. To measure the channel conditions of UE 115-a, base station 105-a may send a CSI-RS. UE 115-a may measure the CSI-RS and provide a CSI report indicating various radio channel quality measurements to the base station.

[0136] The base station 105-a can configure the timing of the reference signal 205 for the UE 115-a, and the reference signal 205 can include a TRS, a CSI-RS, or both. The timing may include the time and frequency resources at which the base station 105-a is scheduled to send the reference signal 205. The timing may have a configured periodicity and pattern in the time domain and the frequency domain. In some cases, a reference signal timing may refer to a monitoring timing or a transmission timing. In some examples, a monitoring timing may refer to a reference signal timing of a receiver, during which the receiver may monitor a reference signal. In some examples, a transmission timing may refer to a reference signal timing of a transmitter, during which the transmitter may send a reference signal. In some cases, the terms transmission timing, monitoring timing, timing, and reference signal timing may be used interchangeably. For example, a first monitoring timing and a first transmission timing may refer to the same time and frequency resources.

[0137] In some cases, the configuration of reference signal opportunities may be updated while UE 115-a is in an inactive mode or an idle mode. For example, UE 115-a may be configured with an initial set of TRS and CSI-RS opportunities, but base station 105-a or the core network may change the resource allocation of TRS and CSI-RS while UE 115-a is in an inactive mode or an idle mode. As a result, UE 115-a may not have the correct configuration and may not be able to receive TRS or CSI-RS until an updated configuration is received. Once UE 115 enters connected mode, some systems may provide an updated configuration to UE 115. However, signaling the updated configuration once UE 115 is in connected mode may have a large system overhead.

[0138] To reduce signaling overhead, the wireless communication system 200 may support configuring reference signal opportunities for a UE 115, such as UE 115-a, when the UE 115 is in an inactive mode or an idle mode. For example, when the UE 115-a is in an inactive mode or an idle mode, the UE 115-a may receive a reference signal opportunity indication, which may indicate potential TRS or CSI-RS opportunities available to the UE 115-a when in a connected mode. By indicating reference signal opportunities when the UE 115-a is in an idle mode or an inactive mode, system overhead may be reduced.

[0139] In some cases, the reference signal timing may be indicated to the UE via a paging DCI or a paging message. For example, the paging DCI may include a TRS / CSI-RS timing configuration. In some cases, the paging DCI may indicate that the TRS / CSI-RS timing configuration is included in the paging message. The paging DCI may be carried by a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH), and the paging message may be carried by a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH).

[0140] If the reference signal timing indication 210 is sent by a paging DCI, the paging CI may include a TRS and CSI-RS timing configuration, an identifier of a paging group or a UE group, or a combination thereof. In some cases, the paging DCI carrying the reference signal timing indication 210 may have a format specifically configured to transmit the reference signal timing indication 210. For example, the paging DCI may be an example of a new paging DCI with a new paging DCI format. In some examples, the new paging DCI may have a resource allocation different from, for example, a format 1_0, format 1_1, format 2_0, or format 2_1 DCI. In some cases, the reference signal timing indication 210 may be included in a paging DCI for unicast paging. In some cases, the reference signal timing indication 210 may be included in or attached to a traditional paging DCI.

[0141] In some cases, UE 115-a may receive reference signal opportunity indication 210 via a paging signal. The paging signal may be, for example, a paging DCI or a paging message. Additionally, or alternatively, the paging signal may include a system information change indication. For example, UE 115-a may receive a paging signal (e.g., a paging DCI or a paging message) that includes an indication that system information has been updated, and UE 115-a may monitor the updated system information based on receiving the paging signal. UE 115-a may identify an updated monitoring opportunity set for reference signals based on receiving the updated system information.

[0142] In some cases, the reference signal timing indication 210 can be attached to the paging message. In some cases, a bit in the paging DCI can indicate whether the TRS configuration is updated. In some cases, a bit in the paging DCI can indicate whether the TRS configuration is provided. In some cases, a bit in the paging DCI can indicate whether only the TRS configuration is provided. Therefore, if, for example, the paging message is only used to provide the TRS configuration or provide an update of the TRS configuration, the UE 115 that does not support TRS can ignore the paging message. In some cases, the bits from the previous paging DCI format can be reused for signaling. In some examples, the reserved bits of the existing paging DCI format can be used for signaling. In some cases, the reference signal timing indication 210 can be included in the paging message for the broadcast paging scheme.

[0143] In some examples, the reference signal timing may be indicated to the UE 115-a via system information. The base station 105-a may send a system information change indication, and the UE 115-a may monitor the system information based on receiving the indication. The UE 115-a may monitor the SI change indication at its own paging occasion during each DRX cycle. The UE 115-a may then receive an indication that the system information has changed, and then monitor the system information based on the change indication. The system information may include a reference signal timing indication 210.

[0144] UE 115-a may be configured to use the reference signal opportunity indicated by reference signal opportunity indication 210 for a certain duration. For example, UE 115-a may use the updated configuration until a new configuration of potential TRS / CSI-RS opportunities is provided. For example, base station 105-a may have another update for the opportunity and send another reference signal opportunity indication. UE 115-a may use the most recently received opportunity indication.

[0145] In some examples, reference signal opportunity indication 210 may include a duration over which UE 115-a may assume TRS and CSI-RS opportunities. For example, reference signal opportunity indication 210 may indicate to UE 115-a that the indicated opportunity may be assumed for the next N frames, DRX cycles, or paging opportunities. After the indicated duration, UE 115-a may assume a default reference signal opportunity configuration. In some cases, UE 115-a may assume that there are no resources configured for TRS or CSI-RS after the duration.

[0146] In some cases, the base station 105-a may send a deactivation message to the UE 115-a. In some cases, upon receiving the deactivation message, the UE 115-a may revert to previous operation. For example, the UE 115-a may assume a default set of reference signal opportunities. In some cases, the UE 115-a may use synchronization signal / physical broadcast channel (SS / PBCH) blocks for time and frequency tracking and radio resource management. In some cases, configuration deactivation / activation signaling may be indicated as part of the TRS and CSI-RS configuration or in the paging DCI.

[0147] In some examples, TRS, CSI-RS, or both may be used for radio resource management measurement relaxation. For example, UE 115-a may measure reference signal 205 and determine a signal characteristic of the reference signal. For example, UE 115-a may determine a reference signal received power, a reference signal received quality, or a reference signal strength indicator based on CSI-RS or TRS. UE 115-a may use the signal characteristics to determine conditions for radio resource management (RRM) measurement relaxation. In some cases, the periodicity of the reference signal occasion may be the same as the periodicity of the paging occasion. In some cases, the periodicity of the reference signal occasion may be different from the periodicity of the paging occasion.

[0148] Figure 3 Examples of reference signal timing update schemes 300 and 301 that support reference signal monitoring timing updates for idle and inactive UEs according to aspects of the present disclosure are shown. In some examples, reference signal timing update schemes 300 and 301 may implement aspects of wireless communication system 100.

[0149] When the UE 115 is operating in an inactive mode or an idle mode, the UE 115 may be configured with updated opportunities for TRS, CSI-RS, or both. The UE 115 may receive a configuration of an old TRS / CSI-RS opportunity 305 from the base station 105. For example, when the UE 115 establishes a connection with the base station 105, the UE 115 may receive a default configuration of TRS / CSI-RS opportunities. The UE 115 may enter an inactive mode or an idle mode, and the base station 105 may update the TRS / CSI-RS configuration. For example, the TRS / CSI-RS configuration may be changed to include an updated TRS / CSI-RS opportunity 310. The UE 115 may receive an indication of an updated TRS / CSI-RS opportunity 310 when operating in an inactive mode or an idle mode.

[0150] In some cases, TRS / CSI-RS timing updates may be sent via paging. For example, UE 115-a may receive a paging DCI indicating that the TRS / CSI-RS timing has been updated. In some cases, the paging DCI may include a TRS / CSI-RS timing configuration. For example, UE 115 may receive a paging DCI in a paging timing 315-a, and the paging DCI may include an indication of an updated TRS / CSI-RS timing 310. The paging DCI may include a group identifier or a UE identifier. In some cases, if UE 115 has a matching group identifier or UE identifier, UE 115 may decode the paging DCI and obtain an indication of an updated TRS / CSI-RS timing 310. In some cases, if UE 115 is configured for unicast paging, the base station 105 may indicate an updated TRS / CSI-RS timing 310 via a paging DCI.

[0151] In some cases, the TRS / CSI-RS opportunity may be attached to the paging message. For example, the paging DCI may indicate whether to update the TRS configuration, whether to provide the TRS configuration, whether to provide only the TRS configuration in the paging message, or any combination thereof. In some cases, the bits of the traditional paging DCI may be reused for the signaling. In some cases, the reserved bits of the paging DCI may be used for the signaling. In some cases, one bit may be used to indicate whether to update the TRS configuration, whether to provide the TRS configuration, or whether to provide only each of the TRS configurations. In some cases, only one bit may be used to indicate whether to update the TRS configuration, whether to provide the TRS configuration, or whether to provide only the TRS configuration. In some cases, the paging DCI that transmits the TRS / CSI-RS opportunity may be a new type of paging DCI. In some cases, the TRS / CSI-RS opportunity configuration may be attached to the traditional paging DCI.

[0152] The UE 115 may receive the paging DCI in the paging occasion 315-a and monitor the paging message carrying the TRS / CSI-RS occasion configuration. In some cases, if the paging DCI indicates that the paging message includes only the TRS configuration, the UE 115 that is not configured for TRS may avoid monitoring the paging message.

[0153] In some cases, the TRS / CSI-RS timing configuration may be sent via system information. For example, a UE 115 in an idle mode or an inactive mode may monitor a system information change indication in each paging opportunity 315. The UE 115 may receive a paging message and check the system information change indication in the paging message. If the UE 115 does receive a system information change indication, the UE 115 may determine that a change has been made to the system information. The UE 115 may then monitor the system information including the TRS / CSI-RS timing configuration. The system information change indication may be included in a paging message or a paging DCI.

[0154] The periodicity of the updated TRS / CSI-RS opportunity 310 may be configurable. For example, for the reference signal opportunity update scheme 300, the updated TRS / CSI-RS opportunity 310 has the same periodicity as the paging opportunity 315 or the same periodicity as the paging cycle. For the reference signal opportunity update scheme, the updated TRS / CSI-RS opportunity 310 may have a different periodicity from the paging opportunity 315. The periodicity of the updated TRS / CSI-RS opportunity 310 may be configurable regardless of whether the TRS / CSI-RS opportunity configuration is sent through paging or through system information.

[0155] Figure 4 An example of a reference signal timing update scheme 400 that supports reference signal monitoring timing updates for idle and inactive UEs according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. In some examples, the reference signal timing update scheme 400 may implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100.

[0156] When the UE 115 is operating in an inactive mode or an idle mode, the UE 115 may be configured with an updated opportunity for TRS, CSI-RS, or both. The UE 115 may receive a configuration of an old TRS / CSI-RS opportunity 405 from the base station 105. For example, when the UE 115 establishes a connection with the base station 105, the UE 115 may receive a default configuration of a TRS / CSI-RS opportunity. The UE 115 may enter an inactive mode or an idle mode, and the base station 105 may update the TRS / CSI-RS configuration. For example, the TRS / CSI-RS configuration may be changed to include an updated TRS / CSI-RS opportunity 310. The UE 115 may receive an indication of an updated TRS / CSI-RS opportunity 410 when operating in an inactive mode or an idle mode. In some cases, the UE 115 may receive an indication during a paging opportunity 415 (e.g., a paging opportunity 415-a).

[0157] In some cases, UE 115 may use updated TRS / CSI-RS opportunities 310 for the configured duration. For example, UE 115 may use updated TRS / CSI-RS opportunities 410 until a new configuration of potential TRS / CSI-RS opportunities is provided. If base station 105 reconfigures resources for TRS, CSI-RS, or both, base station 105 may send another reference signal opportunity configuration to UE 115.

[0158] In some cases, the UE 115 may identify a window during which the UE 115 may assume that there is a potential TRS / CSI-RS opportunity. For example, the UE 115 may assume that there is a TRS / CSI-RS opportunity within the first window 420. However, the UE 115 may assume that there is no TRS / CSI-RS opportunity within a second window 425 after the first window 420. If active, the UE 115 may monitor CSI-RS, TRS, or both during the updated TRS / CSI-RS opportunity 410 in the first window 420. In some cases, the base station 105 may send an indication of the first window 420 and the second window 425. For example, the timing information for the updated TRS / CSI-RS opportunity 410 may be included in the TRS / CSI-RS opportunity configuration.

[0159] In some cases, UE 115 may receive an indication from the network to deactivate the TRS / CSI-RS configuration. For example, base station 105 may send a TRS / CSI-RS deactivation message to UE 115. In some cases, UE 115 may revert to previous operation after receiving the deactivation message. For example, UE 115 may use SS / PBCH blocks for time / frequency tracking and radio resource management. In some cases, the deactivation message may be indicated as part of the TRS / CSI-RS timing configuration or in a paging DCI. In some cases, base station 105 may send an activation message for the configuration. For example, base station 105 may switch (e.g., activate and deactivate) the configuration for UE 115. The activation message may also be sent as part of the TRS / CSI-RS timing configuration or in a paging DCI.

[0160] Figure 5 An example of a process flow 500 for supporting reference signal monitoring opportunity updates for idle and inactive UEs according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. In some examples, the process flow 500 may implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. The process flow 500 may include a UE 115-b and a base station 105-b, which may be respective examples of a UE 115 and a base station 105 described herein.

[0161] At 505, UE 115-b may receive a reference signal configuration that includes a set of monitoring opportunities for a reference signal associated with a connection mode. Each monitoring opportunity may include time and frequency resources for transmitting a reference signal. In some cases, the monitoring opportunities may be extended across time and frequency resources according to a pattern indicated in the reference signal configuration. In some cases, the opportunities indicated in the reference signal configuration may be referred to as an initial set of reference signal opportunities. The reference signal may be, for example, a CSI-RS, a TRS, or both. In some cases, the reference signal opportunity may refer to an opportunity for a CSI-RS, a TRS, or both.

[0162] At 510, UE 115-b may receive a paging DCI based on a change in a set of monitoring opportunities for a reference signal while UE 115-b is operating in an idle mode or an inactive mode. For example, at 510, UE 115-b may be in an idle mode or an inactive mode, and base station 105-b may have an update for TRS / CSI-RS opportunities. Base station 105-b may send a paging DCI at 510 to indicate the change to UE 115-b. In some cases, at 515, base station 105-b may send a paging message to UE 115-b. For example, the paging DCI may schedule UE 115-b for a paging message.

[0163] At 520, UE 115-b may identify an updated set of monitoring opportunities for reference signals based on receiving paging downlink control information. In some cases, the paging DCI may include an indication of an updated set of monitoring opportunities for reference signals. In some cases, UE 115-b may monitor a paging message based on receiving the paging DCI, and the paging message may include an indication of the updated set of monitoring opportunities.

[0164] At 525, the base station 105-b may send a reference signal using the updated set of transmission opportunities. When the UE 115-b is in connected mode, the UE 115-b may monitor the reference signal at the updated opportunity. At 530, the UE 115-b may perform time and frequency tracking, radio resource management (e.g., RRM), or both based on the reference signal received in the updated set of monitoring opportunities. For example, the UE 115-b may measure a reference signal received power or a reference signal received quality of the reference signal and use the measurement to determine a radio resource management measurement relaxation.

[0165] Figure 6 An example of a process flow 600 for supporting reference signal monitoring opportunity updates for idle and inactive UEs according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. In some examples, the process flow 600 may implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. The process flow 600 may include a UE 115-c and a base station 105-c, which may be respective examples of a UE 115 and a base station 105 described herein.

[0166] At 605, UE 115-c may receive a reference signal configuration that includes a set of monitoring opportunities for a reference signal associated with a connection mode.

[0167] At 610, the UE 115-c may receive a system information change indication based on a change in a set of monitoring opportunities for a reference signal while the UE 115-c is operating in an idle mode or an inactive mode. For example, at 610, the UE 115-c may be in an idle mode or an inactive mode, and the base station 105-c may have an update for a TRS / CSI-RS opportunity. The base station 105-c may send a system information change indication at 610 to indicate the change to the UE 115-c. In some cases, the base station 105-c may send the system information change indication during a paging opportunity of the UE 115-c. For example, the system information change indication may be sent via a paging signal such as a paging DCI or a paging message.

[0168] At 615, the base station 105-c may send a system information message to the UE 115-c. The UE 115-c may receive the system information message indicating an updated set of monitoring opportunities for the reference signal. At 620, the UE 115-c may identify the updated set of monitoring opportunities for the reference signal based on receiving the system information message.

[0169] At 620, the base station 105-c may send a reference signal using the updated set of transmission opportunities. When the UE 115-c is in connected mode, the UE 115-c may monitor the reference signal at the updated opportunity. The UE 115-c may perform time and frequency tracking, radio resource management (e.g., RRM), or both based on the reference signal received in the updated set of monitoring opportunities. For example, the UE 115-c may measure a reference signal received power or a reference signal received quality of the reference signal and use the measurement to determine a radio resource management measurement slack.

[0170] Figure 7 A block diagram 700 of a device 705 supporting reference signal monitoring opportunity updates for idle and inactive UEs according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The device 705 may be an example of aspects of a UE 115 as described herein. The device 705 may include a receiver 710, a communication manager 715, and a transmitter 720. The device 705 may also include a processor. Each of these components may communicate with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0171] The receiver 710 may receive information such as packets, user data, or control information associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels, data channels, and information related to reference signal monitoring opportunity updates for idle and inactive UEs, etc.). The information may be passed to other components of the device 705. The receiver 710 may be a reference Fig.10 Examples of aspects of the transceiver 1020 are described. The receiver 710 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of antennas.

[0172] The communication manager 715 can receive a reference signal configuration including a set of monitoring opportunities for a reference signal associated with a connected mode, wherein each monitoring opportunity includes time and frequency resources for transmitting a reference signal, change the set of monitoring opportunities based on the reference signal when operating in an idle mode or an inactive mode, receive paging downlink control information, identify an updated set of monitoring opportunities for the reference signal based on the received paging downlink control information, and perform time and frequency tracking or radio resource management measurements based on the reference signal received in the updated set of monitoring opportunities.

[0173] The communication manager 715 may also receive a reference signal configuration including a set of monitoring opportunities for a reference signal associated with a connected mode, wherein each monitoring opportunity includes time and frequency resources for transmitting a reference signal, change the set of monitoring opportunities based on the reference signal when operating in an idle mode or an inactive mode, receive a system information change indication, receive a system information message indicating an updated set of monitoring opportunities for the reference signal based on receiving the system information change indication, and perform time and frequency tracking or radio resource management measurements based on the reference signal received in the updated set of monitoring opportunities.

[0174] The communication manager 715 may also receive system information indicating a set of monitoring opportunities for reference signals associated with the connected mode, wherein each monitoring opportunity includes time and frequency resources for transmitting the reference signal, change the set of monitoring opportunities based on the reference signal when operating in an idle mode or an inactive mode, receive a paging signal including a system information change indication, identify an updated set of monitoring opportunities for the reference signal based on receiving updated system information based on the system information change indication in the paging signal, and perform time and frequency tracking or radio resource management measurements based on the reference signal received in the updated set of monitoring opportunities. The communication manager 715 may be an example of aspects of the communication manager 1010 described herein.

[0175] The communication manager 715 or its subcomponents may be implemented by hardware, code (e.g., software) executed by a processor, or any combination thereof. If implemented in code executed by a processor, the functions of the communication manager 715 or its subcomponents may be performed by a general purpose processor, a digital signal processor (DSP), an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), a field programmable gate array (FPGA) or other programmable logic device, discrete gate or transistor logic, discrete hardware components, or any combination thereof designed to perform the functions described in the present disclosure.
