[0009] In one aspect, a method for evoking a sense of cleanliness in a subject is provided, the method comprising delivering to the subject the fragrance composition described herein or the consumer product described herein.
[0010] In one respect, the use of the fragrance compositions or consumer products described herein for evoking a sense of cleanliness in subjects is provided.
[0011] Each of the aspects and embodiments described herein may be used together unless explicitly or clearly excluded from the context of the embodiment or aspect. Detailed Implementation
[0012] The olfactory pathway in mammals is an ancient neural circuit that differs from the typical thalamic-cortical sensory pathway in that it forms direct and, in some cases, interconnected connections with brain structures involved in emotion and memory. For example, olfactory sensory neurons in the nose transmit sensory information to the olfactory bulb in the forebrain, where they synapse with projection neurons that directly or indirectly target limbic system structures, including the hippocampus and amygdala, which are associated with memory and emotion. Therefore, olfaction occupies a unique position in neuroanatomy, thus having a rapid and direct psychological impact on subjects. Consequently, there is significant interest in developing olfactory stimuli (e.g., spices) that can evoke desired sensations and perceptions in subjects. The sensation of cleanliness (also referred to as purity in this paper) is a highly desirable and widely applicable perception.
[0013] Cleanliness is a desirable property, as evidenced by a wide variety of consumer products designed to promote feelings of cleanliness and / or personal hygiene, such as personal care products, home care products, fabric care products, cleaning products, air care products, and cosmetics. A sense of cleanliness can be desirable in a variety of situations and activities, including but not limited to when interacting with others, such as in social, work, or school settings; when exercising, bathing, and generally cleaning the body; when caring for fabrics, such as when washing clothes, linens, and other fabric items, or cleaning up upholstery, carpets, curtains, etc.; and when cleaning the environment, such as during home or workplace cleaning activities. Therefore, fragrances with cleanliness properties (i.e., evoking a sense of cleanliness in subjects upon exposure) have broad utility.
[0014] Fragrances with cleaning properties can be used alone or in combination with other products or strategies that can be used for cleaning. When used in consumer products (such as personal care products, cleaning products, home care products, fabric care products, air care products, or cosmetics), fragrances with cleaning properties can enhance the sense of cleanliness experienced by users of the product. Furthermore, others who encounter fragrances with cleaning properties will also perceive a sense of cleanliness.
[0015] However, producing fragrance compositions that reliably evoke a sense of cleanliness is a challenging task. The total number of fragrance ingredients, their combinations, and their concentrations, individually or in combination, represent an exceptionally large olfactory space for consumer testing. Consequently, the data collected from consumer testing can be both large and heterogeneous (e.g., the fragrances tested and / or the concentrations of the tested fragrances vary across consumer tests), which can hinder the extraction of meaningful information from a wide range of consumer tests. As described herein, these difficulties in identifying combinations of fragrance ingredients and the specific ratios and concentrations of such ingredients that reliably evoke a sense of cleanliness in subjects upon exposure are overcome.
[0016] As described herein, association rule mining methods are used to identify combinations of fragrance ingredients that evoke a sense of cleanliness in subjects, such as those described in International Patent Application WO 2023 / 107564 (which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety). Association rule mining methods determine combinations of fragrance ingredients and the concentration and ratio ranges of ingredients that, when present in a fragrance, increase the likelihood of evoking a sense of cleanliness in subjects. The use of these combinations of ingredients in fragrance compositions or consumer products (e.g., within the determined concentration ranges and ratios) increases the number of subjects who find the composition or product to evoke a sense of cleanliness. See, for example, Section III. Therefore, this document provides compositions (e.g., fragrance compositions) and consumer products containing combinations of ingredients that evoke a sense of cleanliness. Fragrance compositions and / or consumer products containing combinations of fragrance ingredients that evoke a sense of cleanliness are referred to as having cleansing properties. Methods for producing and using such compositions are also provided.
[0017] The compositions and methods described herein are advantageous because they provide an olfactory means of evoking a sense of cleanliness in subjects. The compositions provided herein are specifically designed to evoke a sense of cleanliness in subjects and are therefore referred to as having cleanliness properties. Such compositions can be used alone or in combination with other cleanliness or hygiene strategies to promote a sense of cleanliness in subjects.

It should be understood that this disclosure is not limited to the specific embodiments described, and therefore these embodiments may vary. It should also be understood that the terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting.
[0022] It must be noted that, unless the context clearly specifies otherwise, as used herein and in the appended claims, the singular forms “a / an” and “the” include plural indicators. For example, “a / an” or “an” includes “at least one” and “one or more”.
[0023] As used herein, the terms “comprising” and “comprised of” are synonymous with “including”, “containing”, and their grammatical variations, and are inclusive or open-ended, not excluding additional, unlisted members, elements, or method steps. The terms “comprising”, “comprised of”, “including”, “containing”, and their grammatical variations also include the term “composed of”.
[0024] Unless otherwise defined, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art.
[0025] "Optional" or "optionally" means that the event or situation described below may or may not occur, and that the description includes both the scenario in which the event or situation occurs and the scenario in which it does not occur.
[0026] The terms “fragrance composition,” “fragrance formulation,” “perfume composition,” and their variations (including grammatical variations) have the same meaning and refer to a composition that is a mixture of fragrance ingredients, such as alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, ethers, lactones, nitriles, natural extracts (e.g., essential oils, absolutes, CO2 extracts, enfleurage, pure or purified monoclonal compounds using physical processes), synthetic oils, thiols, etc., in which the combination of these fragrance ingredients produces a fragrance by combining the aroma of the individual components.
[0027] As used herein, the term "subject" refers to a user of a fragrance (e.g., a fragrance composition or a consumer product containing a fragrance composition) and / or an intended recipient of the fragrance, such as when the fragrance is used or applied by another person. The term "subject" refers to a human or non-human subject. Non-limiting examples of non-human subjects include non-human primates, dogs, cats, mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, pigs, poultry, horses, cattle, goats, sheep, cetaceans, etc. In some embodiments, the subject is a human. In some cases, the subject may be referred to as a consumer.
[0028] The terms *assign*, *evoke*, *initiate*, *drive*, *induce*, and their grammatical variations can be used alternatively to indicate causality. For example, upon exposure to a fragrance, the fragrance can evoke, induce, initiate, or drive a perception or sensation in a subject. As another example, a fragrance having properties (e.g., cleansing properties) causes a subject to perceive or feel those properties upon exposure. The terms *perceive*, *perception*, *sense*, and their grammatical variations can be used alternatively to describe the effects evoked in a subject.
[0029] Where a numerical range is provided, it should be understood that each intermediate value between the upper and lower limits of the range (to one-tenth of the unit of the lower limit, unless the context explicitly specifies otherwise) is also specifically disclosed. Each smaller range between any specified value or intermediate value in the stated range and any other specified value or intermediate value in the stated range is encompassed within this disclosure. The upper and lower limits of these smaller ranges may be independently included in or excluded from the range, and each range (where any one, neither, or both limits are included in the smaller range) is also encompassed within this disclosure, depending on any limits specifically excluded from the stated range. Where a stated range includes one or two limits, those ranges where the included one or both limits are excluded are also included in this disclosure.
[0030] Numerical values and ranges may be presented herein as numerical values preceded by the term "approximately". The term "approximately" is used herein to provide textual support for the exact number that follows it, as well as numbers that are close to or approximate to the number following the term. In determining whether a number is close to or approximate to a particular stated number, the close to or approximate unstated number may be a number that is substantially equivalent to the number in the context in which the particular statement is presented. For example, with respect to numerical values, the term "approximately" refers to the range of -10% to +10% of the numerical value, unless the term is otherwise specifically defined in the context. All values and ranges implicitly include the term "approximately" unless the context explicitly specifies otherwise.
[0031] I. Compositions that impart cleaning properties
[0032] This document provides compositions and consumer products comprising combinations of ingredients that evoke a sense of cleanliness in a subject. The combination of ingredients that evoke a sense of cleanliness in a subject imparts cleanliness properties to the fragrance composition and / or consumer product. Therefore, the fragrance composition and consumer product having cleanliness properties induce a sense of cleanliness in a subject. Thus, in one aspect, a fragrance composition having cleanliness properties is provided. In another aspect, a consumer product comprising a fragrance composition having cleanliness properties is provided.
[0033] In some embodiments, the sense of cleanliness includes a general sense of cleanliness. Declarative measures, such as questionnaires, can be used to detect and / or measure the overall sense of cleanliness or cleanliness (see, for example, Section III). In some embodiments, a questionnaire may ask a subject to rate the intensity of the sense of cleanliness evoked by the fragrance. In some embodiments, a questionnaire may ask a subject to state whether the fragrance can be described as “clean.” In some embodiments, the sense of cleanliness includes associated feelings of cleanliness. For example, in some embodiments, associated feelings include a basic, effective sense of cleanliness, a deep sense of cleanliness, a mild or gentle sense of cleanliness, a sense of preventing or combating odors, and / or a sense of facilitating the cleaning process. These associated feelings can also be detected and / or measured using declarative measures, such as questionnaires. In some embodiments, a questionnaire may ask a subject to rate the intensity of the feelings evoked by the fragrance. In some embodiments, a questionnaire may ask a subject to select one or more descriptive items from a set of assertive descriptions that best describe the feelings evoked by the fragrance. It should be understood that other methods known in the art can be used to assess a subject’s response to a fragrance, including but not limited to other declarative measures and psychological, physiological, and psychophysiological assessments. Therefore, in some embodiments, the sensation of cleanliness includes one or more of the following: a general sense of cleanliness, a basic, highly effective sense of cleanliness, a deep sense of cleanliness, a gentle or mild sense of cleanliness, a sense of preventing or combating odors, and a sense of facilitating the cleaning process. In some embodiments, the sensation of cleanliness includes a general sense of cleanliness, a basic, highly effective sense of cleanliness, a deep sense of cleanliness, a gentle or mild sense of cleanliness, a sense of preventing or combating odors, and a sense of facilitating the cleaning process.
[0034] A. Flavoring composition
[0035] Surprisingly, it was found that certain combinations of fragrance ingredients can evoke a sense of cleanliness in a broad (e.g., multinational) population of subjects. See, for example, Section III below. These combinations were identified using association rule mining methods (see, for example, WO 2023 / 107564), which further determined concentration and ratio ranges at which the identified ingredients could be combined to increase the likelihood that subjects would experience a sense of cleanliness due to olfactory exposure. The presence of combinations of ingredients in full-fragrance products in consumer products leads to an increased number of subjects identifying fragrances as having cleanliness properties. See, for example, Section III. Therefore, in one aspect, a fragrance composition that evokes a sense of cleanliness is provided, comprising a combination of fragrance ingredients identified as evoking a sense of cleanliness. In some embodiments, the fragrance ingredient combination that evokes a sense of cleanliness is 2,6-dimethyloct-7-en-2-ol (dihydromyrcenol) and (e)-1-ethoxydec-1-ene (Arctical). 2,6-Dimethyl-7-en-2-ol can also be referred to by the following chemical names or synonyms: dihydromyrcetol, 2,6-dimethyl-7-octen-2-ol, dimyrcetol, dihydrocitronellol, dihydromuganol, dihydromyrcetol, dimyrcetol, tetrahydroconvalol, lymolene, dihydromyrcetol, dimethyloctenol-2, dimethyloctenene, dihydromyrcetol, 2,6-dimethyl-7-octenol-2, and 2,6-dimethyl-7-octen-2-ol. [0050] II. Methods for producing fragrances with cleaning properties
[0051] This document also provides methods for producing fragrance compositions or consumer products with cleansing properties, methods comprising formulating one or more of 2,6-dimethyloct-7-en-2-ol and (e)-1-ethoxydec-1-ene and / or ethyl 5-norbornene-2-carboxylate, 2-tert-butylcyclohexyl acetate and methyl 3-methylcyclohexane-1-carboxylate, or 2,4-dimethylcyclohexane-3-enaldehyde and 1-ethyl-2-methylpropyl crotonic acid into a fragrance composition or consumer product. In some embodiments, formulation includes adding one or more ingredients to a fragrance composition, reducing one or more ingredients in a fragrance composition, or any combination thereof to impart cleansing properties. In some embodiments, the fragrance ingredient combination may be directly formulated into a consumer product. In some embodiments, a fragrance composition containing a fragrance ingredient combination that evokes a clean feeling may be directly formulated into a consumer product.
[0052] In some embodiments, the method includes formulating a combination of ingredients described herein into a new fragrance composition. A new fragrance composition means a fragrance that does not currently exist. Therefore, the new fragrance composition can be specifically designed to have cleansing properties. In these cases, the method includes selecting a combination of fragrance ingredients that evoke a sense of cleanliness to formulate into the new fragrance.
[0053] In some embodiments, the method includes formulating a combination of ingredients into an existing fragrance composition. In some embodiments, the combination of fragrance ingredients is added to the fragrance composition because the combined ingredients are not present in the existing fragrance. In some embodiments, only one of the combined fragrance ingredients is added to the existing fragrance composition. For example, the existing fragrance composition may initially contain one of the combined fragrance ingredients, and therefore, to deliver a clean feeling, another fragrance ingredient of the combination is added to the existing fragrance. In some embodiments, one of the fragrance ingredients in the combination that evokes a clean feeling is newly added to the fragrance composition, and the other fragrance ingredient of the combination is reduced in the fragrance composition because, although it is present in the fragrance composition, it must be reduced to achieve the concentration or ratio required to evoke a clean feeling.
[0054] In some embodiments, the method includes formulating a combination of ingredients into an existing fragrance composition in which the combination of ingredients is present but not at a concentration and / or ratio that evokes a sense of cleanliness. Therefore, in some embodiments, the combined fragrance ingredients are added independently to or reduced from an existing fragrance composition to bring these ingredients to a concentration or ratio range that evokes a sense of cleanliness. In some embodiments, two ingredients are added to increase the concentration of the ingredients in the fragrance composition. In some embodiments, two ingredients in the composition are reduced to decrease the concentration of these ingredients in the fragrance composition. In some embodiments, one ingredient in the composition is reduced to decrease the concentration of that ingredient in the fragrance composition, and another ingredient is added to increase the concentration of that ingredient in the fragrance composition. In some embodiments, one of the combined ingredients is not changed, and another ingredient is added or removed from the composition. In these cases, the formulation brings the combination of fragrance ingredients to a ratio and / or concentration range that delivers a sense of cleanliness.

[0092] III. Examples
[0093] The following examples are included for illustrative purposes only and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention.
[0094] Example 1: Identification of fragrance ingredients that evoke a sense of cleanliness in consumers.
[0095] Ninety fragrances were prepared, each containing 20 to 25 fragrance components at known concentrations. These fragrances were evaluated using two test product applications: (1) a blind olfaction test for fabric care in the form of fragrance beads wrapped in a dry towel; and (2) a blind olfaction test for body care in a diluted form.
[0096] In each of the countries of Brazil, China, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States, 90 spices were presented to groups of 100 female consumers (aged 18-65) for testing in three phases. In each phase, the 100 consumers smelled 30 spices. Group members were allowed to smell each ingredient multiple times as desired during the evaluation phase.
[0097] Each group member was asked to group 3-10 of the 30 spices in each phase into 3 groups based on their olfactory perception (each spice represented only one group), meaning spices perceived as similar to each other were grouped together. After the groups were formed, members were asked to describe their different groups using a questionnaire. Table E1 shows the section of the questionnaire that quantifies the feeling of cleanliness evoked by the spices.
[0098] Table E1: Could you please rate the cleanliness of this fragrance group? Circle only one code.
[0099]
[0100] Panel members were also asked to select two claim descriptions that best described the spice group. Table E2 shows the claim descriptions used for selection.
[0101] Table E2:
[0102]
[0103] The reactions of the team members were collected in a database and matched with each tested spice, including the concentration of each component in the spice.
[0104] Fragrance ingredient combinations were identified using association rule mining (as described in WO 2023107564) that had an increased probability of achieving a cleaning score of 8 or 9 and were described by at least one phrase selected from “It provides basic, effective cleaning,” “It goes beyond deep cleaning,” “It provides gentle cleaning,” “It combats and prevents odors,” and “It facilitates the cleaning process.” For simplicity, the term “cleaning” was used to describe all responses of interest.
[0105] In short, a two-step process was performed, whereby first the frequency of occurrence of the two components and the reaction was identified, and association rules were generated from the frequently occurring identified pairs. The quality of the association rules was then evaluated to ensure their reliability. Rules that further met the substitution test, demonstrating a support level of at least 10% and a lift of at least 1.10, were considered valid. The analysis yielded the four rules shown in Table E3.
[0106] Table E3: Ingredient combination and concentration range, average ratio of ingredients, and enhancement rate of the "cleaning" rule.
[0107]
[0108] To further confirm the reliability of the identified rules, all fragrances containing at least one rule were evaluated in Brazil, China, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States for body care and fabric care to determine the percentage of panel members who considered the fragrance “clean.” Tables E4-E7 show the results for each rule.
[0109] Table E4: Percentage of group members who found any spice containing Rule 1 (see Table E3) to be “clean”.
[0110]
[0111] Table E5: Percentage of group members who found any spice containing Rule 2 (see Table E3) to be “clean”.
[0112]
[0113] Table E6: Percentage of group members who found any spice containing Rule 3 (see Table E3) to be “clean”.
[0114]
[0115] Table E7: Percentage of group members who found any spice containing Rule 4 (see Table E3) to be “clean”.
[0116]
[0117] These data support the ability of the identified fragrance ingredient combinations to evoke a sense of cleanliness across a broad range of consumers.
