Display device, head-up display and method for controlling a display device

Abstract

The present invention relates to a display device, in particular a display device suitable for a head-up display, e.g. a head-up display for use in a vehicle that uses local dimming.To enable local dimming while avoiding the disadvantages of conventional approaches, a display device suitable for a head-up display is comprised of a transmissive display (20), a light source (10) spaced apart from the transmissive display (20) and comprising multiple light-emitting elements, and a control unit (60), wherein the control unit (60) is configured to receive information about a user's eye position (30), and wherein the control unit (60) is further configured to selectively control the multiple light-emitting elements to illuminate a predetermined area corresponding to the user's eye position (30) through the transmissive display (20) by means of a subset of the multiple light-emitting elements, wherein the light-emitting elements of the multiple light-emitting elements that do not belong to the subset are switched off or dimmed.
