Description

[0001] This disclosure relates to retainers and in particular retainers for use on aircraft for use in retaining a mobile structural element of the aircraft in a desired position.

[0002] In many parts of an aircraft there are mobile structural elements such as doors, steps, or sets of steps which are attached to another mobile structural element or a fixed position structural element of the aircraft, for example a bulkhead, by one or more hinges or other pivots. Those mobile structural elements are moveable between first and second positions relative to the structural element to which it is attached. It is desirable for the mobile structural element to be retained in at least one of the first or second position once it has been moved to that position. For example, the first and second positions are open and closed for doors, or deployed or folded away for a step or a set of steps. It is to be understood that as used herein use of the terms mobile, movable, fixed and similar terms are terms that are relative to the structure of the aircraft as a whole.

[0003] FR 2267439 A1 discloses a device which has a co-axial sliding arrangement which includes an inner magnetic rod, an intermediate tube, and an outer tube. The rod and intermediate tube project from the outer tube and retract under pressure from a door against a pair of coil springs to effect retraction of the rod and magnetic engagement of a door mounted disc and absorption of the impact of the door.

[0004] According to a first aspect of the present disclosure there is provided a retainer suitable for use on an aircraft, the retainer comprising the features of claim 1.

This will prevent the damper being damaged or being so compressed that the damper ceases to prevent or minimise the transmission of shock impulses through the damper.

Claims

1. A retainer (16, 18) suitable for use on an aircraft (2), the retainer comprising a first retainer part (16) and a second retainer part (18); the first retainer part comprises a catch and a damper (24); in which the catch comprises one or more magnetic elements (20, 22); the damper comprises a damping material, the damping material damps shock impulses; and the catch is supported on the damper; the second retainer part comprises a catch plate; in which the catch plate comprises at least one magnetic catch element (30); and wherein the second retainer part further comprises a layer of a damping material (32) that overlies at least part of the at least one magnetic catch element, and wherein said damping material damps shock impulses.

2. A retainer (16, 18) according to claim 1 in which at least one of the magnetic elements (20, 22) is one of a permanent magnet, a neodymium magnet and a samarium-cobalt magnet.

3. A retainer (16, 18) according to claims 1 or 2 in which at least one magnetic element (20, 22) is formed from a ferromagnetic material.

4. A retainer (16, 18) according to any of claims 1 to 3 in which the first retainer part (16) further comprises a layer of a damping material (26) that overlies the one or more magnetic elements (20, 22), and that damping material damps shock impulses.

5. A retainer (16, 18) according to any preceding claim in which at least one of the magnetic catch elements (30) is one of a permanent magnet, a neodymium magnet and a samarium-cobalt magnet.

6. A retainer (16, 18) according to any preceding claim in which at least one of the magnetic catch elements (30) is a formed from a ferromagnetic material.

7. A retainer (16, 18) according to any of claims 1 to 6 in which the damping material of one or more of the damper (24), the layer (26) which overlies the one or more magnetic elements (20, 22), and the layer (32) which overlies the one or more magnetic catch elements (30) comprises an elastomer.

8. A retainer (16, 18) according to claim 7 in which the elastomer comprises one of a natural rubber, a synthetic rubber, and a silicone rubber.

9. A retainer (16, 18) according to any of claims 1 to 8 in which the first and second retainer parts (16, 18) are so configured that, the magnetic elements (20, 22) and the magnetic catch elements (30) are magnetically attracted to each other when the retainer is in use and the magnetic elements and the magnetic catch elements at least partially overlie each other.

A retainer (16, 18) according to any of claims 1 to 9 in which the damper (24) comprises first and second end faces (24A, 24B); the first end face (24A) is adapted to support or incorporate the at least one magnetic element (20, 22), and the second end face (24B) is adapted to abut a structure (8) to which the first retainer part (16) is attached; the first and second end faces are so oriented relative to each other that when the second end face is abutting the structure, the first end face may be orientated so that it is parallel to the face of the second retainer part (18) when the first and second retainer parts (16, 18) are in use and in contact with each other.

11. A retainer (16, 18) according to any of claims 1 to 10 in which the damper (24) is so configured that the damper material is sufficiently dimensioned that the expected maximum shock impulses will not damage the damper, and the damper will not reach its maximum linier elastic deformation under compression when subject to the maximum anticipated shock impulses.

12. An aircraft (2) comprising a mobile structure (12), a fixed structure (8), and at least one retainer (16, 18) according to any of claims 1 to 11 in which the first retainer part (16) is attached to one of a fixed structure and a moving structure; the second retainer part (18) is attached to the other of the fixed structure and the moving structure; and the first and second retainer parts are so located that they abut each other when the moving structure is moved to a position next to the fixed structure.

13. An aircraft (2) according to claim 12 in which the moving structure (12) is one of a door or a step.
