DESCRIPTION TITLE: Brake Warning Light TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The technical field of the invention is that of vehicles with handlebars equipped with hand brakes comprising a base fixed to a handle and a brake lever fixed to the base.
[0002] The present invention relates to a brake warning device comprising a brake detector and a lighting device equipping said vehicles and in particular those which are removable or sold as retrofitting or aftermarket equipment.
[0003] The invention also relates to a vehicle equipped with said brake warning device. TECHNOLOGICAL BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0004] Some vehicles, such as bicycles, tricycles or scooters, do not include a brake warning device, or these are not always clearly recognizable to the vehicle following them.
[0005] Several devices exist that detect when a vehicle is braking. However, most of these warning systems use mechanical sensors that only activate when the pressure applied by the driver is strong enough to close a switch. These sensors are connected to the brake lever, and it is the lever's movement that triggers the rear brake light via an electrical contact. Furthermore, the contact can close unintentionally when the vehicle drives over a pothole. These devices also require adjustment.
[0006] We know of a device mounted at the end of the handle with a switch arm in contact with the end of the brake lever; the movement of the brake lever will switch the switch and thus turn on the lighting device.
[0007] We also know of a brake detector mounted on the base of the brake lever between its axis of rotation and the handle, and extending in front of said lever, the tilting of the brake lever will put it in contact with the extension of the brake detector.
[0008] There are also brake sensors consisting of a part attached to the brake lever and a fixed part. The two parts are connected, and when the user pulls the brake lever, its end pivots towards the handlebar grip, causing the end of the brake lever to pull the sensor part, and the tactile signal is transmitted. Then, the indicator light illuminates.
[0009] Another brake sensor has been described, comprising a moving part, a mounting part, a sensor switch, and a signal light. It is mounted between a bicycle handlebar and a brake lever. It includes two terminals and a spring that keeps the two terminals apart when the user is not braking and allows contact when braking. When the two terminals make contact, it powers a transmitter that activates a brake light.
[0010] Another brake warning system involves equipping a light with an accelerometer. However, braking detection can only occur with a delay and is often inaccurate due to the movements generated by the vehicle.
[0011] Although motorcycles are equipped with a wired brake light system, the brake light is positioned quite low and is not easily visible in heavy traffic. Therefore, there is a need for an additional brake light mounted higher up, such as on a helmet or backpack.
[0012] Therefore, all these warning systems are not satisfactory. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0013] The invention offers a solution to the problems mentioned above, by allowing a brake warning device without adjustments and easy to install as a retrofit, while guaranteeing improved detection.
[0014] A first aspect of the invention relates to a brake warning device for a manual brake on a vehicle with at least two wheels, comprising handlebars equipped with hand brakes, a lighting device, and a brake detector communicating with the lighting device wirelessly. It is characterized in that the brake detector comprises a force sensor and is housed in a sleeve containing a battery. The force sensor is a compact, low-power device that detects when the user brakes simply by directly measuring the force exerted on the brake lever. No mechanical components are required, which facilitates installation, particularly in retrofit applications. Equipment. The lighting device is, for example, a brake light. The battery can be rechargeable or non-rechargeable, such as a replaceable battery.
[0015] The brake sensor is advantageously removable. This allows it to be retrofitted or installed on every trip.
[0016] Advantageously, the sleeve is made of an elastic material, such as silicone. Silicone is an elastomer that has the advantage of being flexible and elastic, and it is also quite adhesive. The sleeve can therefore easily deform to be slipped around the brake lever regardless of its shape and stay in place.
[0017] Advantageously, the force sensor is a resistance force sensor or "Force-Sensing Resistor" in English.
[0018] Advantageously, the force sensor is mounted on a ductile support. This support can be metallic, for example. The support holds the force sensor in place.
[0019] Advantageously, the sleeve has a section comprising only the force sensor and the support. This section is therefore thinner and less bulky.
[0020] Advantageously, the sleeve comprises one or more cylindrical hollow sections. These cylindrical hollow sections allow the sleeve to be inserted onto the brake lever.
[0021] Advantageously, at least one of the cylindrical hollows includes internal grooves. To facilitate insertion of the sleeve onto the brake lever, grooves are provided inside the cylindrical hollows of the sleeve to reduce the contact area. These grooves are limited to one-quarter to one-third of the surface area to maintain sufficient grip and are diametrically opposed to the force sensor.
[0022] Advantageously, the sleeve includes at least one light source that serves as an indicator light for the lighting device. This indicator light allows the user to see whether their rear light is on or not. The sleeve includes an opening or transparent area so that the indicator light is visible.
[0023] Advantageously, the battery is a rechargeable battery. This battery is flat and rechargeable via a connector, preferably of the USB type, for example.
[0024] Advantageously, the battery is removable from the sleeve. It can therefore be replaced or recharged independently.
[0025] The advantage is that the indicator light alerts the driver when the rechargeable battery is discharged. "Discharged" is defined as a battery with a charge level below 30%, for example. This informs the driver when the battery is low, preventing them from driving with an ineffective brake sensor.
[0026] Advantageously, the wireless transmission includes a radio transceiver. The lighting device is thus controlled remotely. The wireless transmission is achieved via the radio transceiver.
[0027] Advantageously, the brake sensor includes a pairing system with the lighting device. Thanks to this pairing system, it is possible to change either the lighting device or the handlebar grip and then re-pair everything after the change. It is also possible to pair multiple lighting devices, for example, one on the vehicle and one on the helmet. The lighting device can be permanently or removablely attached to the vehicle.
[0028] Advantageously, the brake sensor includes a standby mode that activates when the force applied to the sensor falls below a certain threshold. This standby mode saves battery power and reactivates as soon as the user presses the brake sensor.
[0029] Advantageously, the light intensity emitted by the lighting system increases with the force applied to the force sensor. This allows the following vehicle to determine the braking force and adjust its driving accordingly. The lighting system only activates when the pressure on the force sensor exceeds 600g, or even 800g.
[0030] A second aspect of the invention relates to a vehicle with at least two wheels comprising a hand brake with a brake lever equipped with a brake warning device having at least one of the preceding characteristics. The vehicle may, for example, be a bicycle, a tricycle, or a two- or three-wheeled scooter. It may include a brake sensor with a sleeve on one or both handles.
[0031] Advantageously, the force sensor is located on the brake lever on the side opposite the handle. The brake sensor is mounted on the handle so that the force sensor should be located on the side where the user's fingers press, i.e. towards the handle.
[0032] The invention and its various applications will be better understood by reading the following description and examining the accompanying figures. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES
[0033] The figures are presented for illustrative purposes only and are in no way limiting to the invention.

[0039] [Fig. 6] shows a cyclist equipped with a brake warning device according to the invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0040] Unless otherwise specified, the same element appearing on different figures has a unique reference.
[0041] Throughout this description, "front" will refer to the front part of the vehicle in the direction of travel, and "rear" will refer to the rear of the vehicle.
[0042] Vehicles V with handlebars equipped with a hand brake, such as bicycles (Figure 6), scooters, motorcycles, tricycles, or quadricycles, whether electric, human-powered, or internal combustion engine-powered, are equipped with hand brakes 1 mounted on the handlebars 10 near the grips 11 and include a brake lever 12 with a base 18. The brake lever 12 activates a brake that rubs against a wheel 13 to slow it down. When the user U brakes, the vehicle behind must be warned to avoid a collision. However, most existing vehicles are not equipped with braking warning systems (brake lights). Furthermore, the lights attached to helmets do not detect the activation of the brake lever. It is therefore necessary to install a brake sensor that is easily mounted and removed so that it can be adapted to all types of vehicles equipped with hand brakes 1.
[0043] Thus, the brake warning device 3 according to the invention comprises a lighting device 14 or 15 which allows visualization of the fact that the user U is braking by actuating the brake lever 12 and a brake detector 2. The braking, or brake light, can be visualized on the lighting device 14, 15 by the appearance of a continuous red light, a flashing or a variation in the intensity of the light of the lighting 14 or 15.
[0044] The lighting device 14 or 15 can be fixed, for example by screwing, magnetic fixing, clipping or with a hook and loop type self-gripping fixing either to the rear of the vehicle V, to the mudguard, the rear luggage rack or the seat post for example, or to the helmet 16 of the user U. It can also be fixed to a garment or bag worn by the user U.
[0045] In figure 6, the brake levers 12 are oriented substantially horizontally and forward relative to the handles 11. They can also be oriented downwards or vertically in the case of sports bikes with curved handlebars.
[0046] As illustrated in Figure 1, the brake detector 2 is installed on the brake lever 12 and is substantially parallel to it.
[0047] As can be seen in Figure 2, the brake detector 2 includes a sleeve 20, a support 23, a force sensor 22, a housing 24. It also includes a printed circuit board 25, for example a plate of rigid insulating material such as epoxy resin, on which is placed a control module 251 configured to control the brake detector 2.
[0048] The lighting device 14 or 15 and the braking sensor 2 communicate with each other wirelessly. This communication is carried out, for example, using a radio transmission with a frequency advantageously of 2.4 GHz, according to a specific communication protocol or a standard protocol such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Alternatively, wireless communication is achieved using optical or infrared transmission.
[0049] The lighting device 14 or 15 here includes a wireless transceiver (not shown) which communicates with a wireless transceiver of the brake sensor 2. The transceiver of the brake sensor 2 advantageously consists of a radio module included in a control module 251 and a antenna 26 integrated into the printed circuit board 25. The transceiver can also be composed of an antenna 26 and a radio module separate from the control module 251.
[0050] The use of transceivers ensures two-way wireless communication for pairing between the brake sensor 2 and the lighting device 14, 15, and also for communicating the operating status of the lighting device 14 or 15 to the brake sensor 2. The brake sensor 2 can be connected to several lighting devices 14, 15, or several brake sensors 2 can be connected to one or more lighting devices 14, 15. In this case, it is a multipoint communication protocol.
[0051] In another variant, the wireless transmission is unidirectional. The brake sensor 2 then comprises a transmitter, and the lighting device 14, 15 comprises a receiver. In this case, the brake sensor 2 controls the lighting device 14, 15 without feedback and cannot pair with it via wireless communication.
[0052] The sleeve 20 is elongated in the same direction as the brake lever 12. It is flexible and deformable, made of a material with elastic properties such as an elastomer, for example silicone, rubber, or TPU, and is slipped onto the brake lever 12 by means of three cylindrical hollow sections 200 positioned from a first end 20a along the sleeve 20, thus making it easily removable. Each cylindrical hollow section 200 serves as a means of attaching the brake sensor 2 to the brake lever 12, like a hose clamp, for example. The cross-section of the cylindrical hollow section 200 is smaller than the cross-section of the brake lever 12 to ensure sufficient clamping and retention. There could be one, two, or more than three of these sections without departing from the scope of the present invention. The advantage of having at least two cylindrical hollow parts 200 is to distribute the holding force on the brake lever 12 along the sleeve 20 and to have at least one gripping area 201 located between them to remove the sleeve 20 easily.
[0053] These cylindrical hollow parts 200 advantageously include internal grooves 2000 (see Figure 4). These are oriented along the longitudinal axis of the sleeve 20 so as to facilitate the sliding of the sleeve 20 on The brake lever 12 is held in place both during assembly and disassembly of the brake sensor 2. These grooves 2000 are advantageously present on only a portion of the inner surface of the cylindrical hollows 200 so as to maintain sufficient contact with the surface of the brake lever 12, for example, one-quarter to one-third of the inner surface. They are preferably located on the side opposite the force sensor 22. Indeed, the area without grooves 2000 ensures better contact in the area in contact with the surface of the brake lever 12 located on the side opposite the handle 11, whereas the area of the brake lever 12 on the side of the handle 11 is often hollow. The material of the cylindrical hollows 200 being flexible, preferably an elastic material, allows it to adapt to different sizes and shapes of brake levers 12.To remove the sleeve 20, the area without grooves is detached from the surface of the brake lever 12 by means of the gripping area 201, so that only the area with grooves 2000 remains in contact with the brake lever 12.
[0054] According to another variant, each cylindrical hollow part 200 can be separated into two elements to laterally attach the sleeve 20 to the brake lever 12 without having to thread it along its length. Thus, it can consist of two adjustable straps, depending on the size of the brake lever 12, connected by hooks and loops; or a strap passing through a bridge directly connected to the sleeve 20; or a strap with holes into which a lug fixed to the sleeve 20 is inserted.
[0055] The sleeve 20 forms the outer casing of the brake sensor 2. It is hollow along its entire length to accommodate the bracket 23, the force sensor 22, and the housing 24, which includes the printed circuit board 25 and a rechargeable battery 21. The force sensor 22 is attached to the bracket 23 by adhesive, double-sided tape, or adhesive tape. It is located at the first end 20a of the sleeve 20, opposite the cylindrical hollow sections 200 positioned near the first end 20a to make contact with the user's fingers U when braking. Thus, the portion of the sleeve 20 located at the end 20a comprises only the force sensor 22 and the bracket 23, making this portion thinner for easy access by the user's fingers U.In the illustrated embodiment, the force sensor 22 is located on the support 23 on the opposite side of the cylindrical hollow parts 200 in order to be as close as possible to the user's fingers. U. The battery may be non-rechargeable, without departing from the scope of the present invention, for example, a battery that can be changed if it is discharged.
[0056] According to another embodiment, the force sensor 22 is located on the support 23 on the same side as the cylindrical hollow parts 200.
[0057] The battery 21 has a roughly parallelepiped and flat shape. It is attached to the printed circuit board 25 in order to reduce the size of the housing 24.
[0058] The housing 24 is advantageously arranged at a second end 20b of the sleeve 20 offset from the three cylindrical hollow parts 200 to be positioned on the portion of the brake lever 12 closest to the base 18 of the hand brake, in the area which is not in contact with the fingers of the user U.
[0059] The force sensor 22 is connected to the printed circuit board 25. The bracket 23 extends beyond the force sensor 22 to the second end 20b of the sleeve 20 to attach to the housing 24 by a push-fit connection. The bracket 23 can be prevented from moving by deforming small tabs 232 that act as stops, once the bracket 23 is inserted into the housing 24 through the slot 242. In another embodiment, the bracket 23 is prevented from moving by one or more screws fixed to the housing 24.
[0060] The housing 24 includes the rechargeable battery 21, the printed circuit board 25, the antenna 26 and a light source 27 which may be an opto-electronic element, for example a light-emitting diode, located on the printed circuit board 25. The brake detector 2 may not contain a light source 27 without departing from the scope of the present invention.
[0061] The battery 21 is rechargeable via a connector 210 accessible from the second end 20b of the sleeve 20, which is closed by a watertight cover 202 formed from the material of the sleeve 20 and attached to one side of the housing 24 by a pin 2020. The cover 202 can also be separated from the sleeve 20 without departing from the scope of the present invention. The connector 210 is, for example, a Micro USB port or a USB Type-C port. It is electrically and physically connected to the printed circuit board 25 located inside the housing 24. The power supply and charging of the battery 21 are managed and controlled by a control module 251.
[0062] Figures 1 and 2 show that the sleeve 20 has a first lateral opening 203 opposite the light source 27; a second lateral opening 203 can be provided opposite the first, thus allowing the user U to see the light source 27 regardless of the orientation of the brake sensor 2. Indeed, the brake sensor 2 can be installed on the left or right brake lever 12 on vehicle V. In this example, the housing 24 is totally or partially transparent to allow light to pass through; it includes one or two protrusions 240 designed to fit into the first or second lateral opening 203 of the sleeve 20. These protrusions 240 are completely or partially transparent, thus allowing the light source 27 to be diffused outwards from the brake sensor 2. The housing 24 can also be used as a light guide so as to offset the light source 27 so that it can be positioned elsewhere than opposite the protrusion 240.
[0063] Alternatively, the housing 24 is devoid of protrusion 240 opposite the side openings 203.
[0064] The sleeve 20 also includes a delimited area 204 preferably projecting from its external surface intended to be opposite a push button 250 placed on the printed circuit 25. In the example illustrated in figures 1 and 2, the delimited area 204 is circular but other shapes are possible, such as oval, square or rectangular.
[0065] The housing 24 is in the form of a box open on one side and closed on the other sides and having several openings: a first side 24a includes a first opening 241 to access the connector 210 and a slot 242 to slide the support 23 into, a second side 24b opposite the first side 24a includes a second opening 243 to connect the force sensor 22 to the printed circuit 25 and to slide the support 23 into, a third side 24c with a third opening 244 to place the push button 250 into.
[0066] The transparent outgrowth(s) 240 are preferably arranged on the fourth and / or fifth sides 24d or 24e.
[0067] The support 23, of length I, is deformable thanks to a zone of weakness 230 located at a distance d from one of its two edges, such that d is greater than or equal to the distance between the first and second sides 24a, 24b of the housing 24. This zone of weakness 230 is here constituted by a central transverse hole 231; it can also be Lateral, but other shapes are possible, such as a series of cutouts in the form of points or lines, or a thinner profile in this area. This weak point 230 allows the brake sensor 2 to be adapted to the shape of the brake lever 12. As illustrated in Figure 2, the support 23 can be a metal plate, preferably laser-cut, made of aluminum, steel, copper, or any other ductile material, i.e., one capable of plastic deformation. The support 23 can also be a metal rod with a smaller cross-section in the weak point 230. Since the sleeve 20 is flexible, the brake sensor 2 bends at the weak point 230 and retains this deformation thanks to the support 23, thus adapting its shape to the curvature and shape of the brake lever 12, as illustrated in Figure 1.
[0068] According to another variant, support 23 can be replaced by another type of rigid support with, for example, a joint in place of the weak zone 230.
[0069] According to another embodiment, the brake sensor 2 does not include a deformation zone. The support 23 can then be rigid, made of plastic for example, and not have a weak point 230. The sleeve 20 can also be rigid. The brake sensor 2 is thus rigid and does not deform to adapt to the different shapes of brake levers 12. In this case, the cylindrical hollow parts 200 can be separated from the sleeve 20 and sufficiently adjustable to adapt to the different shapes of brake levers 12.
[0070] The force sensor 22 is in the form of a flat, flexible, substantially rectangular strip and must be long enough to cover at least one finger of the user U and be connected to the printed circuit 25. The force sensor is advantageously a force-sensing resistor (FSR), i.e., one whose resistance varies according to the force, pressure, or mechanical stress applied.
[0071] According to another variant, the force sensor can be replaced by one or more push buttons triggered by the user's fingers U. It can also be replaced by a capacitive sensor which has the advantage of being able to indicate movements by moving the finger(s) along the brake lever 12.
[0072] We will now describe the assembly and operation of brake warning device 3.
[0073] To mount the brake sensor 2, slide the sleeve 20 onto one of the vehicle's brake levers 12, preferably the rear brake lever, but it is possible to install two brake sensors 2: one per brake lever. Next, attach the lighting device 14, 15 to the vehicle V or the user's helmet 16. Pairing is also required between the transmitter-receiver of the brake sensor 2 and the transmitter-receiver of the lighting device 14, 15. This is done by pressing the push button 250 and a button 17 located on the lighting device 14, 15. If more than two brake sensors and / or lighting devices are communicating, pair the transmitter-receivers in pairs.
[0074] The different elements of the brake warning device 3, the brake detector 2 or the lighting device 14, 15 as appropriate can thus be interchanged, whether the lighting device is fixed or removable, which has the advantage of being able to use the brake warning device 3 on a larger number of vehicles or to be replaced in case of failure or breakage.
[0075] The brake sensor 2 must be positioned so that the portion of the sleeve 20 containing the force sensor 22 is positioned at the end of the brake lever 12 opposite the user's fingers U when the user applies the brake by pressing the brake lever 12. The force sensor 22 is thus positioned on the brake lever 12 on the side opposite the handle 11 so as to cover the surface of the brake lever 12 in contact with the user's fingers U. The housing 24 is preferably positioned on the brake lever 12 in the area located on the side of the base 18 of the hand brake, which, in this way, does not impede the movement of the brake lever 12 during braking. The portion of the sleeve 20 where the force sensor 22 is located is thinner than the portion of the sleeve 20 where the housing 24 is located in order to minimize the thickness of the brake lever 20 in the area in contact with the fingers.
[0076] Once the brake sensor 2 is in place, the control module 251 remains in standby mode to conserve battery power 21. As soon as the user U begins to press the brake lever 12 and the force sensor 22, the brake sensor 2 activates, and as soon as the pressure on the force sensor 22 exceeds a certain threshold, the brake sensor 2 is activated. When the resistance or force threshold, known as the first threshold, is reached, the lighting device 14, 15 illuminates. As soon as the brake is released, the lighting device 14, 15 switches off, and the brake sensor 2 then enters standby mode. The lighting device 14, 15 advantageously switches off at a threshold lower than the first threshold (hysteresis) to avoid a flickering effect. These thresholds can be fixed or automatically adjusted by the control module 251.
[0077] According to another embodiment, the brake detector 2 can be activated by means of the push button 250. It can then be put into standby automatically after a certain time or by means of the push button 250.
[0078] According to one variant of the invention, the more the user brakes, the more he presses on the force sensor 22, the more the light emitted by the lighting device 14, 15 increases.
[0079] The light source 27 located in the sleeve 20 illuminates simultaneously with the lighting device 14, 15, thus informing the user U that the latter is illuminated, constituting an indicator of the brake light activation. For this to occur, the transmitter-receiver of the lighting device 14, 15 must send the information back to the transmitter-receiver of the brake sensor 2.
[0080] According to another embodiment, the light source 27 turns on as soon as the user U presses the brake lever 12, without taking into account the state of the lighting device 14,15. This is the case when the wireless transmission is only in one direction.
[0081] The light source 27 also informs the user U when the battery 21 is discharged, i.e., insufficiently charged; for example, it will light up, flash, or change color. In this case, the user U will open the cover 202 to access the connector 210 for recharging the battery 21. Since the connector 210 is easily accessible, the user U can recharge the battery 21 without removing the brake sensor 2 from the brake lever 12. Alternatively, the battery 21 can be detached from the brake sensor and thus removed from the sleeve 20 for recharging without removing the brake sensor 2 from the brake lever 12. A connector linking the printed circuit board 25 and the battery 21 can facilitate its removal.
[0082] If the user wishes to remove the brake sensor 2 from the brake lever 12, they simply need to place a finger on each side of the gripping area 201 located between two cylindrical hollow parts 200, and pull to remove the sleeve 20 while possibly detaching it from the surface of the brake lever 12.
[0083] According to another embodiment, the brake detector 2 is connected to the lighting device 14, 15 by means of a wired connection.
[0084] In another embodiment, the housing 24, which includes the printed circuit board 25 and the battery 21, is relocated and connected to the sleeve 20 by means of a wired connection. This reduces the overall size, particularly the thickness, of the sleeve 20 over a greater length of the brake lever 12. The user thus has more space to place their fingers on the area of the force sensor 22 during braking.
[0085] In one alternative embodiment, the brake sensor 2 is not removable. It remains permanently attached to the brake lever. It can be fixed by screwing, clipping, or directly integrated into the brake lever 12.
[0086] The brake sensor 2 can be paired with a lighting device located at the front of the vehicle V or at the front of the user's helmet U and configured to emit a white light. Thus, by pressing the force sensor 22, the user can flash the headlights instead of activating the brake light.
[0087] The brake detector 2 can be equipped with additional functions such as flashing or steady lighting, an audible warning, or a geolocation tracker. It can also be fitted with one or more buttons that can activate functions other than brake detection, such as turn signals advantageously integrated into the lighting device 14, 15.
