Description

[0001] A WEAR MEMBER RETAINING ASSEMBLY

[0002] FIELD OF INVENTION

[0003] The present invention relates to a wear member retaining assembly for retaining a wear member to a structure. The present invention has particular but not exclusive application for securing a wear liner to the wall of a bin or chute of material processing equipment. The patent specification describes this use, but it is by way of example only and the invention is not limited to this use.

[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0005] Structures used in material handling or processing, such as bins or chutes, are often fitted with wear members to protect the structure from damage or degradation caused by wear. Wear members find particular application in circumstances where the structure is used in the handling of highly abrasive material or in processes with a high flow rate of material which causes sliding wear.

[0006] Wear members include plates or liners with abrasion resistant and / or wear resistant properties. Wear members are commonly made of metal, ceramic, polyurethane or rubber. Wear members are typically sacrificial elements that suffer the abrasion in place of the structure. Sacrificial wear members require regular replacement.

[0007] Wear members are fastened or otherwise affixed to a surface of the structure. Conventionally this is achieved with bolt and nut fasteners connecting the wear member to the structure or welding the wear member onto the structure.

[0008] Prior art fasteners have a bolt, a cam nut with a sidewardly elongate shape and a large capping nut. The cam nut is attached to one end of the bolt and is inserted through a hole in a wear plate and a slotted hole in a structure. The cam nut is rotated such that the cam nut does not fit through the slotted hole and pulled back to abut against the structure. The capping nut is then attached to the other end of the bolt and typically screwed to abut the wear plate thus clamping the wear plate to the structure. However, these fasteners can be installed improperly as the rotation of the fastener may realign the cam nut with the slotted hole such that the fastener is not in a lockable position and when the faster is screwed in the wear plate is not properly clamped to the structure. The capping nut can be attached to the bolt prior to the fastener being inserted through a hole in a wear plate and a slotted hole in a structure. However, rotation of the fastener can cause the cam nut to catch early and not rotate to the locked position fully, resulting in a cam nut that is unstable and prone to disengagement.

[0009] OBJECT OF THE INVENTION

[0010] It is an object of the present invention to overcome or at least alleviate one or more of the above-mentioned problems with existing wear member fasteners and / or provide the consumer with a useful or commercial choice.

[0174] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

[0175] With reference to Figures 1 to 14, there is depicted a wear member retaining assembly 10 for retaining a wear member 90 to a structure 80 in accordance with one preferred embodiment of the invention. The wear member 90 could require securing at multiple points. In such a circumstance a wear member retaining assembly 10 would be used at each point. The following description describes a single wear member retaining assembly 10.

[0176] The wear member retaining assembly 10 has a retainer 20, a key shank 30, and a key head 40. The wear member retaining assembly 10 has a longitudinal axis 60. The key shank 30 and key head 40 can be attached together to form a key.

[0177] The structure 80 is depicted as a flat sheet of material with a circular first hole 82 therethrough. The structure 80 has a first side and a second side.

[0178] The wear member 90 is depicted as a flat sheet of material with a circular second hole 92 therethrough. The wear member 90 is attached to the first side of the structure 80. The second hole 92 has a first opening 96 on a face of the wear member 90, and a second opening 98 on a face of the wear member 90 which is attached to the structure 80. The first opening 96 is larger than the second opening 98. The second hole 92 has a tapered abutment portion 94.

[0179] The retainer 20 has an aperture 22 centrally located on the longitudinal axis 60. The aperture 22 extends in a longitudinal direction with respect to the longitudinal axis 60. The aperture 22 forms a longitudinal hole through the retainer 20.

[0180] The retainer has two channels 24A / 24B.

[0181] The two channels 24A / 24B are rotationally symmetrical to one another around the longitudinal axis 60 by 180 degrees. Each channel 24A / 24B has a longitudinal portion, a transverse portion and a retaining portion 27A / 27B.

[0182] Each longitudinal portion is open to the aperture 22.

[0183] Each channel 24A / 24B is open to the aperture 22. Each channel 24A / 24B is open to the exterior of the retainer 20.

[0184] Each longitudinal portion defines a substantially straight path extending in a longitudinal direction with respect to the longitudinal axis 60. Each longitudinal portion is open to one of each transverse portion. Each longitudinal portion is tapered to narrow towards the transverse portion.

[0185] Each transverse portion defines a path which extends in a transverse direction with respect to the longitudinal axis 60. Each transverse portion defines a path in a substantially circular arc around the longitudinal axis 60. Each transverse portion has a raised section that biases the protrusions to the retaining portions 27A / 27B, and thus, the key to the locked position.

[0186] Each transverse portion is connected one of the longitudinal portions. Each transverse portion is open to one of the retaining portions 27A / 27B.

[0187] Each retaining portion 27A / 27B has a closed end.

[0188] The retainer 20 has two shoulder portions 28 which prevents the key or part thereof to fall out from the retainer 20.

[0189] A disadvantage of known fasteners is that during removal or in the event of failure of the fastener component pieces can fall. Over time fasteners attaching wear members to structures can deteriorate and / or break, and pieces of a broken fastener can similarly fall. As fasteners are typically made of metal, a falling fastener or piece thereof presents a very real danger of serious harm to personnel and equipment. For example, a worker removing a wear member that is installed on a chute with a known fastener, where the fastener includes a bolt, a cam nut and a capping nut. Removal of the wear member requires the work to be performed from the internal side of the chute. To remove the wear member (i.e., for replacement) the capping nut would be loosened on the bolt. The capping nut can also be detached from the bolt completely. At which time, for a variety of reasons (e.g., if the worker is careless), the cam nut and bolt may slip out the chute on the external side and fall. Since chutes in industrial applications can be quite tall or installed at height the falling fastener pieces would fall a significant distance. A retainer with shoulders which is affixed to the structure can prevent component pieces from falling, thus mitigating the hazard.

[0190] The key shank 30 is cylindrical with a first end engageable with the retainer 20 and a second end. The key shank 30 has a longitudinal axis that is coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the wear member retaining assembly 10 when assembled. Each key shank 30 has a flange 36 positioned between the first end and second end. The flange 36 has a greater diameter than the aperture 22. The flange 36 prevents the key shank 30 from passing all the way through the retainer 20.

[0191] The first end having two protrusions 32A / 32B. The protrusions 32A / 32B extend radially from the key shank 30 transverse to a longitudinal axis of the key. The protrusions 32A / 32B extend in opposite directions to one another.

[0192] Each protrusion 32A / 32B is receivable within one of the two channels 24A / 24B. The taper of each longitudinal portion is designed to assist in location of one of the protrusions 32A / 32B into one of the channels 24A / 24B respectively when receiving the key shank into the retainer.

[0193] The first end has a leading end opposite the second end. The leading end is the first portion of the key shank 30 to enter the retainer 20 when the key shank 30 is inserted into the retainer 20.

[0194] The first end has a taper on a leading edge thereof to assist in location of the key shank 30 into the aperture 22.

[0195] Each protrusion 32A / 32B has a first taper on a leading edge thereof to assist in location of the protrusion 32A / 32B into the respective channel 24A / 24B. The taper on the first end and the first taper on the leading edge of the protrusions 32A / 32B form a singular taper surface. Each protrusion 32A / 32B has a second taper on a leading edge thereof to assist in location of the protrusions 32A / 32B into the respective channels 24A / 24B.

[0196] Each protrusion 32A / 32B has a taper on a trailing edge thereof to assist in location of one of the protrusions 32A / 32B into one of retaining portions 27A / 27B. The taper is angled so as to bias the one of the protrusions 32A / 32B into one of retaining portions 27A / 27B when the key shank 30 is rotated to engage with the retainer 20.

[0197] The key shank 30 has a tool fitting recess 34 with a hexagonal cross-section extending longitudinally within the second end.

[0198] The key shank 30 has an external screw thread 38 on the second end.

[0199] The key head 40 has a first key head portion 46 and a second key head portion 47. The key head second portion 47 is larger than the first key head portion 46. The key head 40 has a longitudinal axis that is coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the wear member retaining assembly 10 when assembled.

[0200] The first key head portion 46 is attachable to the key shank 30. The first key head portion 46 has a recess 42 with an internal thread on an inner surface thereof, the internal thread corresponding to the external thread 38 of the key shank 30.

[0201] The threaded connection between the key shank 30 and the key head 40 is designed such that the key head 40 is screwed on in the same direction of rotation that moves the key head 30 such that the protrusions 32A / 32B move through the transverse portions towards the retaining portions 27A / 27B. Rotation of the key head 40 by a tool to attach of the key head 40 to the key shank 30 can also rotate the key shank 30 such that the protrusions 32A / 32B move through the transverse portions.

[0202] A disadvantage present in the known fasteners is that a bolt may extend further than the wear surface of the wear member exposing a portion of the bolt to wearing and / or damage. This can be due to a longer than required bolt length or degradation of the wear surface over time exposing a portion of the bolt. The exposed portion of the bolt can become worn or damaged such that the bolt becomes seized or deforms in such a way as to impede removal of the wear member. This disadvantage is also present in installation practices of known fasteners where workers installing a wear member can often select a bolt that protrudes further than the wear surface of the wear member exposing a portion of the bolt to wearing and / or damage.

[0203] The key head recess 42 has an open end and a closed end. The key head recess 42 can dissuade the use of an improperly sized bolt by preventing the proper installation of the wear member 90 if the bolt is too long.

[0204] The second key head portion 47 having a tapered abutment portion 48 which abuts the wear member 90 at an abutment portion 94.

[0205] The key head 40 has three cylindrical tool fitting recesses 44 arranged equidistant to one another at an offset distance from the longitudinal axis of the key head 40 and extending longitudinally through the key head 40. An end portion of each tool fitting recess 44 is open to the first hole 82 and the second hole 92. This allows for efficient removal of accumulated ore and / or dirt from each tool fitting recess 44.

[0206] A disadvantage of known fasteners is that when installed there is often a recess in the assembly due to the difference in positioning between one end of the fastener and the wear surface of the wear member (i.e., if the fastener is not proud or flush to the wear surface). The shape of this recess is typically circular. The recess presents a starting point for accelerated wear and premature failure of the wear member. During use the wear member is subjected to uneven and / or excessive wearing of the wear member at the lower end of the recess resulting in a distinctive tear drop wear pattern. The wear life of a wear member that has a recess at the fastening location is less than that of a wear member where the wear surface is flat, meaning that the wear member is required to be replaced more frequently.

[0207] In use, the wear member retaining assembly 10 is used to secure the wear member 90 to the structure 80.

[0208] The retainer 20 is inserted the first hole 82 to a desired position or positioned to a desired position from the exterior of the structure 80. The retainer 20 is then welded to the structure 80. Welding can be performed from either side or both sides of the structure 80.

[0209] The wear member 80 is positioned against the first side of the structure 80 such that the second hole aligns with the first hole 82.

[0210] The key shank 30 is inserted through the first hole 82 and second hole 92 to the unlocked position where protrusion 32A aligns with channel 24A and protrusion 32B aligns with channel 24B.

[0211] The key shank 30 is moved to the locked position. To do so the key shank 30 is moved longitudinally towards the retainer 20 such that the protrusions 32A / 32B move through longitudinal portions. Then the key shank 30 is rotated such that the protrusions 32A / 32B move through the transverse portions. Then the key shank 30 is moved longitudinally away from the retainer 20 such that the protrusions 32A / 32B move to the closed end of retaining portions 27A / 27B.

[0212] Rotation of the key head 40 onto the key shank 30 draws the key head 40 and the key shank 30 closer together such that the key head 40 abuts the wear member 90 and the protrusions 32A / 32B are drawn into the retaining portions 27A / 27B. While the protrusions 32A / 32B are within the retaining portions 27A / 27B the key shank 30 is inhibited from rotating around the longitudinal axis 60 in the clockwise direction. Thus, the wear member 90 is retained to the structure 80 and the key shank 30 is inhibited from rotating around the longitudinal axis 60 in the clockwise direction. The key head 40 can be attached to the key shank 30 prior to the key shank 30 being inserted through the first hole 82 and second hole 92 to the unlocked position.

[0213] To remove the wear member retaining assembly 10 firstly the key head 40 is rotated to be removed from the key shank 30. The key shank 30 is moved longitudinally such that the protrusions 32A / 32B move away from the closed end of retaining portions 27A / 27B. Then the key shank 30 is rotated such that the protrusions 32A / 32B move through the transverse portions. Then the key shank 30 is moved longitudinally such that the protrusions 32A / 32B move through longitudinal portions and the key shank 30 is removed from the retainer 20. The key head 40 can be partially rotated so as to be still attached to the key shank 30 and allow for the protrusions 32A / 32B to move into transverse portions thus allowing the key shank 30 to be rotatable relative to the retainer 20. With a tool to keep the key head 40 in place longitudinally, rotation of the key head 40 moves the key shank 30 longitudinally such that the protrusions 32A / 32B move away from the closed end of retaining portions 27A / 27B. If required, the retainer 20 can then be removed from the structure.

[0214] With reference to Figures 12 to 21 , there is depicted a wear member retaining assembly 110 for retaining a wear member 190 to a structure 180 in accordance with one preferred embodiment of the invention.

The second hole 192 has a first opening 196 on a face of the wear member 190, and a second opening 198 on a face of the wear member 190 which is attached to the structure 180. The second opening 198 is smaller than the first hole 182. The first opening 198 is larger than the second opening 196. The second hole 192 has a tapered abutment portion 194. The retainer 120 has an aperture 122 centrally located on the longitudinal axis

[0218] 160.

[0219] The aperture 122 is extends in a longitudinal direction with respect to the longitudinal axis 160. The aperture 122 forms a longitudinal hole through the retainer 120.

[0220] The retainer has two channels 124A / 124B.

[0221] The two channels 124A / 124B are rotationally symmetrical to one another around the longitudinal axis 160 by 180 degrees. Each channel 124A / 124B has a longitudinal portion, a transverse portion and a retaining portion 127A / 127B.

[0222] Each longitudinal portion is open to the aperture 122.

[0223] Each channel 124A / 124B is open to the aperture 122.

[0225] Each longitudinal portion defines a substantially straight path extending in a longitudinal direction with respect to the longitudinal axis 160. An end of each longitudinal portion is open and open to an end of each transverse portion. Each longitudinal portion is tapered to narrow towards the transverse portion.

[0226] Each transverse portion defines a path which extends in a transverse direction with respect to the longitudinal axis 160. Each transverse portion defines a path in a substantially circular arc around the longitudinal axis 160. [0230] The key shank 130 is cylindrical with a first end engageable with the retainer 120 and a second end. The key shank 130 has a longitudinal axis that is coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the wear member retaining assembly 110 when assembled.

[0231] Each key shank 130 has a flange 136 positioned between the first end and second end. The flange 136 has a greater diameter than the aperture 122. The flange 136 prevents the key shank 130 from passing all the way through the retainer 120. The first end having two protrusions 132A / 132B. The protrusions 132A / 132B extend radially from the key shank 130 transverse to a longitudinal axis of the key. The protrusions 132A / 132B extend in opposite directions to one another.

[0232] Each protrusion 132A / 132B is receivable within one of the two channels 124A / 124B. The taper of each longitudinal portion is designed to assist in location of one of the protrusions 132A / 132B into one of the channels 124A / 124B respectively when receiving the key shank into the retainer.

[0233] The first end has a leading end opposite the second end. The leading end is the first portion of the key shank 130 to enter the retainer 120 when the key shank 130 is inserted into the retainer 120.

[0234] The first end has a 45 degree taper on a leading edge thereof to assist in location of the key shank 130 into the aperture 122.

[0235] Each protrusion 132A / 132B has a first 45 degree taper on a leading edge thereof to assist in location of the key shank 130 into the aperture 122. The taper on the first end and the first taper on the leading edge of the protrusions 132A / 132B form a singular taper surface. Each protrusion 132A / 132B has a second taper on a leading edge thereof to assist in location of the protrusions 132A / 132B into the respective channels 124A / 124B.

[0236] Each protrusion 132A / 132B has a taper on a trailing edge thereof to assist in location of one of the protrusions 132A / 132B into one of retaining portions 127A / 127B. The taper is angled so as to bias the one of the protrusions 132A / 132B into one of retaining portions 127A / 127B when the key shank 130 is rotated to engage with the retainer 120. The key shank 130 has a tool fitting recess 134 with a hexagonal cross-section extending longitudinally within the second end.

[0237] The key shank 130 has an external screw thread 138 on the second end.

[0238] The key head 140 has a first key head portion 146 and a second key head portion 147. The key head second portion 147 is larger than the first key head portion 146. The key head 140 has a longitudinal axis that is coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the wear member retaining assembly 110 when assembled.

[0239] The first key head portion 146 is attachable to the key shank 130.

[0240] The first key head portion 146 has a hole 142 with an internal thread on an inner surface thereof, the internal thread corresponding to the external thread 138 of the key shank 130. The hole 142 extends through the entire key head 140. The threaded connection between the key shank 130 and the key head 140 is designed such that the key head 140 is screwed on in the same direction of rotation that moves the key head 130 such that the protrusions move through the transverse portions towards the retaining portions 127A / 127B. Rotation of the key head 140 by a tool to attach of the key head 140 to the key shank 130 can also rotate the key shank 130 such that the protrusions 132A / 132B move through the transverse portions.

[0241] The second key head portion 147 having a tapered abutment portion 148 which abuts the wear member 190 at an abutment portion 194.

[0242] The key head 140 has three cylindrical tool fitting recesses 144 arranged equidistant to one another at an offset distance from the longitudinal axis of the key head 140 and extending longitudinally through the key head 140. An end portion of each tool fitting recess 144 is open to the first hole 182 and the second hole 192. This allows for efficient removal of accumulated ore and / or dirt from each tool fitting recess 144.

[0243] The cap 150 is cylindrical with a substantially flat externally facing surface. The cap 150 has a pin 154 which is receivable within the hole 142 of the key head 140. The pin 154 has an external thread 156 corresponding to an internal thread of the hole 142 of the key head 140.

[0244] When the wear member retaining assembly 110 is installed the substantially flat externally facing surface would be flush with or proud to an externally facing surface of the wear member 190. The cap 150 is made from the same material as the wear member 190 or a material with a hardness greater than that of the material of the wear member 190.

[0245] The cap 150 has three cylindrical tool fitting recesses 152 arranged equidistant to one another at an offset distance from the longitudinal axis of the cap 150 and extending longitudinally through the cap 150.

[0246] In use, the wear member retaining assembly 110 is used to secure the wear member 190 to the structure 180.

[0247] The retainer 120 is inserted into the first hole 182 from the first side of the structure 180 to a desired position or positioned to a desired position from the exterior of the structure 180. The retainer 120 is welded to the structure 180. Welding can be performed from either side or both sides of the structure 180. The wear member 180 is positioned against the first side of the structure 180 such that the second hole aligns with the first hole 182. As the opening of the second hole 192 adjacent the first side is smaller than the first hole 182 the retainer 120 is held between the structure 190 and the wear member 180.

[0248] The key shank 130 is inserted through the first hole 182 and second hole 192 to the unlocked position where protrusion 132A aligns with channel 124A and protrusion 132B aligns with channel 124B.

[0249] The key shank 130 is moved via a tool to the locked position. To do so the key shank 130 is moved longitudinally towards the retainer 120 such that the protrusions 132A / 132B move through longitudinal portions. Then the key shank 130 is rotated such that the protrusions 132A / 132B move through the transverse portions. Then the key shank 130 is moved longitudinally such that the protrusions 132A / 132B move to the closed end of retaining portions 127A / 127B.

[0250] Rotation of the key head 140 onto the key shank 130 draws the key head 140 and the key shank 130 closer together such that the key head 140 abuts the wear member 190 and the protrusions 132A / 132B are drawn into the retaining portions 127A / 127B. While the protrusions 132A / 132B are within the retaining portions 127A / 127B the key shank 130 is inhibited from rotating around the longitudinal axis 160 in the clockwise direction. Thus, the wear member 190 is retained to the structure 180 and the key shank 130 is inhibited from rotating around the longitudinal axis 160 in the clockwise direction.

[0251] The key head 140 can be attached to the key shank 130 prior to the key shank 130 being inserted through the first hole 182 and second hole 192 to the unlocked position.

[0252] The cap 150 is then inserted within the second hole 192 to abut with the key head 140.

[0253] To remove the wear member retaining assembly 110 firstly the cap 150 is unscrewed from the key head 140. The cap 150 could be completely worn away by the time the wear member retaining assembly is removed / replaced. The key head 140 is rotated to be removed from the key shank 130. The key shank 130 is moved longitudinally such that the protrusions 132A / 132B move away from the closed end of retaining portions 127A / 127B. Then the key shank 130 is rotated such that the protrusions 132A / 132B move through the transverse portions. Then the key shank 130 is moved longitudinally such that the protrusions 132A / 132B move through longitudinal portions and the key shank 130 is removed from the retainer 120. The key head 140 can be partially rotated so as to be still attached to the key shank 130 and allow for the protrusions 132A / 132B to move into transverse portions thus allowing the key shank 130 to be rotatable relative to the retainer 120. With a tool to keep the key head 140 in place longitudinally, rotation of the key head 140 moves the key shank 130 longitudinally such that the protrusions 132A / 132B move away from the closed end of retaining portions 127A / 127B. If required, the retainer 120 can then be removed from the structure.

[0254] With reference to Figures 22 to 25, there is depicted a wear member retaining assembly according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0255] In Figures 23 and 24 the retainer 220 is shown being positioned within a hole in the structure 280 by a fixing tool 300. The fixing tool 300 moves the retainer 220 to a desired position and holds the retainer 220 in position for the retainer 220 to be welded to the structure 280. The welding can be performed from either side or both of both sides of the structure 280.

[0256] The fixing tool 300 has a frame 310 with two mounts 320 to secure the frame 310 to the structure 280 and a positioning mechanism 330. The positioning mechanism 330 has a positioning key with a first end engageable with the retainer 220, the first end having at least one protrusion that is receivable by the at least one channel, the positioning key is movable relative to the retainer 220 from an unlocked position to a locked position. The positioning key is movable relative to the frame 310 to move the retainer 220 to a desired position while keeping the frame 310 stationary. The key has a second end with a threaded portion. The fixing tool 300 has an adjustment nut 340 securable to the threaded portion. Manipulation of the adjustment nut 340 adjusts the position of the key. The mounts 320 are magnetic and can magnetically secure the fixing tool 300 to the structure 280. The mounts 320 are adjustable between an extended position and a retracted position. The fixing tool 300 has a handle 350.

[0257] In use, the fixing tool 300 is mounted on the structure 280 with the mounts 320 with the positioning key arranged centrally over the hole in the structure 280. The retainer 220 is positioned within the hole of the structure. The positioning key is inserted to and locks with the retainer 220. The fixing tool 300 is adjusted by the adjustment nut 340 to move the retainer 220 to a desired position. The retainer 220 is then welded to the structure. The positioning key is moved to the unlocked position and the fixing tool 300 is removed from the structure.

[0258] A wear member 290 is then positioned such that a hole in the wear member 290 aligns with the hole in the structure 280. The wear member 290 has two rails 270 shown on a surface thereof. The rails 270 are attached to a backing plate which is secured to the structure 280. A key is inserted through the wear member 290, the structure 280, and the retainer 220 to an unlocked positioned. The key has a key shank 230 and a key head 240. The key is then moved to a locked position and rotated to secure the wear member 290 to the structure 280.

[0259] With reference to Figure 26, there is depicted a wear member retaining assembly 440 for retaining a wear member 490 to a structure 480 in accordance with one preferred embodiment of the invention.

[0260] The wear member retaining assembly 440 has a retainer 420, a key shank 430, a key head 440, and a cap 450. The wear member retaining assembly 440 has a longitudinal axis 460. The key shank 430 and key head 440 can be attached together to form a key.

[0261] The structure 480 is depicted as a flat sheet of material with a circular first hole 482 therethrough. The structure 480 has a first side and a second side. The first hole 482 has a recess adjacent the first side.

[0262] The wear member 490 is depicted as a flat sheet of material with a circular second hole 492 therethrough. The wear member 490 is attached to the first side of the structure 480. The second hole 492 has a first opening on a face of the wear member 490 which is attached to the structure 480, and a second opening on an opposite face of the wear member 490. The first opening is smaller than the first hole 482. The second opening is larger than the first opening. The second hole 492 has a tapered abutment portion 494.

[0263] The retainer 420 is generally cylindrical in shape. The retainer 420 has an aperture centrally located on the longitudinal axis 460. The retainer 420 has an annular collar 428 with a radially protruding lip 429. The radially protruding lip 429 abuts to the recess in the first side of the structure 480.

[0264] The aperture is circular and extends in a longitudinal direction with respect to the longitudinal axis 460. The aperture forms a longitudinal hole through the retainer 420.

[0265] The retainer has two channels 424A / 424B. The two channels 424A / 424B are rotationally symmetrical to one another around the longitudinal axis 460 by 180 degrees. Each channel 424A / 424B has a longitudinal portion, a transverse portion and a retaining portion.

[0266] Each longitudinal portion is open to the aperture.

[0267] Each channel 424A / 424B is open to the aperture.

[0268] Each channel 424A / 424B is open to the exterior of the retainer 420. This presents a hole transversely through the retainer 420.

[0269] Each longitudinal portion defines a substantially straight path extending in a longitudinal direction with respect to the longitudinal axis 460. An end of each longitudinal portion is open and open to an end of each transverse portion. Each longitudinal portion is tapered to narrow towards the transverse portion.

[0270] Each transverse portion defines a path which extends in a transverse direction with respect to the longitudinal axis 460. Each transverse portion defines a path in a substantially circular arc around the longitudinal axis 460.

[0271] Each transverse portion is open to one of the longitudinal portions. Each second portion is open to one of the retaining portions.

[0272] Each retaining portion has a closed end.

[0273] The retainer 420 has a cover 424 which prevents the key, key shank 430, key head 440, or part thereof to be removed from the retainer 420 other than through the aperture.

[0274] The key shank 430 is cylindrical with a first end engageable with the retainer 420 and a second end. The key shank 430 has a longitudinal axis that is coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the wear member retaining assembly 440 when assembled.

[0275] The first end having two protrusions 432A / 432B. The protrusions 432A / 432B extend radially from the key shank 430 transverse to a longitudinal axis of the key. The protrusions 432A / 432B extend in opposite directions to one another.

[0276] Each protrusion 432A / 432B is receivable within one of the two channels 424A / 424B. The taper of each longitudinal portion is designed to assist in location of one of the protrusions 432A / 432B into one of the channels 424A / 424B respectively when receiving the key shank into the retainer.

[0277] The key shank 430 has a tool fitting recess 434 with a hexagonal crosssection extending longitudinally within the second end. The tool fitting recess 434 has a plurality of tool ball detents 436 arrayed substantially in the centre of longitudinal interior faces of the tool fitting recess 434.

[0278] The key shank 430 has an external screw thread 438 on the second end.

[0279] The key head 440 has a first key head portion and a second key head portion. The key head second portion is larger than the first key head portion. The key head 440 has a longitudinal axis that is coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the wear member retaining assembly 440 when assembled.

[0280] The first key head portion is attachable to the key shank 430.

[0281] The first key head portion has a hole 442 with an internal thread on an inner surface thereof, the internal thread corresponding to the external thread 438 of the key shank 430. The hole 442 extends through the entire key head 440.

[0282] The threaded connection between the key shank 430 and the key head 440 is designed such that the key head 440 is screwed on in the same direction of rotation that moves the key head 430 such that the protrusions move through the transverse portions towards the retaining portions. Rotation of the key head 440 by a tool to attach of the key head 440 to the key shank 430 can also rotate the key shank 430 such that the protrusions 432A / 432B move through the transverse portions.

[0283] The second key head portion having a tapered abutment portion 448 which abuts the wear member 490 at an abutment portion 494.

[0284] The key head 440 has three cylindrical tool fitting recesses 444 arranged equidistant to one another at an offset distance from the longitudinal axis of the key head 440 and extending longitudinally through the key head 440.

[0285] The cap 450 is substantially cylindrical with a substantially flat externally facing surface. The cap 450 has a pin 454 which is receivable within the hole 442 of the key head 440. The pin 454 has an external thread corresponding to an internal thread of the hole 442 of the key head 440.

[0286] When the wear member retaining assembly 440 is installed the substantially flat externally facing surface would be flush with or proud to an externally facing surface of the wear member 490. The cap 452 is made from the same material as the wear member 490 or a material with a hardness greater than that of the material of the wear member 490.

[0287] The cap 450 has three cylindrical tool fitting recesses 452 arranged equidistant to one another at an offset distance from the longitudinal axis of the cap 450 and extending longitudinally through the cap 450. In use, the wear member retaining assembly 440 is used to secure the wear member 490 to the structure 480.

[0288] The retainer 420 is inserted into the first hole 482 from the first side of the structure 480 such that the lip 424 abuts the recess. The abutting face of the retainer 420 abuts the structure 480 around the perimeter of the first hole 482. The retainer 420 is welded to the structure.

[0289] The wear member 480 is positioned against the first side of the structure 480 such that the second hole aligns with the first hole 482. As the opening of the second hole 492 adjacent the first side is smaller than the first hole 482 the retainer 420 is held between the structure 490 and the wear member 480.

[0290] The key shank 430 is inserted through the first hole 482 and second hole 492 to the unlocked position where protrusion 432A aligns with channel 424A and protrusion 432B aligns with channel 424B.

[0291] The key shank 430 is moved via a tool to the locked position. To do so the key shank 430 is moved longitudinally towards the retainer 420 such that the protrusions 432A / 432B move through longitudinal portions. Then the key shank 430 is rotated such that the protrusions 432A / 432B move through the transverse portions. Then the key shank 430 is moved longitudinally such that the protrusions 432A / 432B move to the closed end of retaining portions.

[0292] Rotation of the key head 440 onto the key shank 430 draws the key head 440 and the key shank 430 closer together such that the key head 440 abuts the wear member 490 and the protrusions 432A / 432B are drawn into the retaining portions. While the protrusions 432A / 432B are within the retaining portions the key shank 430 is prevented from rotating around the longitudinal axis 460. Thus, the wear member 490 is retained to the structure 480 and the key shank 430 is prevented from rotating around the longitudinal axis 460.

[0293] The key head 440 can be attached to the key shank 430 prior to the key shank 430 being inserted through the first hole 482 and second hole 492 to the unlocked position.

[0294] The cap 450 is then inserted within the second hole 492 to abut with the key head 440. The cap 450 is then fused to the wear member 90.

[0295] To remove the wear member retaining assembly 440 firstly the cap 450 is unscrewed from the key head 440. The cap 450 could be completely worn away by the time the wear member retaining assembly is removed / replaced. The key head 440 is rotated to be removed from the key shank 430. The key shank 430 is moved longitudinally such that the protrusions 432A / 432B move away from the closed end of retaining portions. Then the key shank 430 is rotated such that the protrusions 432A / 432B move through the transverse portions. Then the key shank 430 is moved longitudinally such that the protrusions 432A / 432B move through longitudinal portions and the key shank 430 is removed from the retainer 420. The key head 440 can be partially rotated so as to be still attached to the key shank 430 and allow for the protrusions 432A / 432B to move into transverse portions thus allowing the key shank 430 to be rotatable relative to the retainer 420. With a tool to keep the key head 440 in place longitudinally, rotation of the key head 440 moves the key shank 430 longitudinally such that the protrusions 432A / 432B move away from the closed end of retaining portions. If required, the retainer 420 can then be removed from the structure.

[0296] ADVANTAGES

[0297] An advantage of the preferred embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly is that the retainer greatly reduces the chances of improper installation of the wear member retaining assembly. The retaining portions of each channel prevent the key from disengaging with the retainer.

[0298] Another advantage of the preferred embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly is that the tapered retainer and tapered key shank facilitate location and centralisation of the key shank into the retainer. This avoids improper installation of the wear member retaining assembly.

[0299] A further advantage of the preferred embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly is that when the protrusions of the key shank are within the second portion the key is biased towards the locked position. This effect is achieved by the both the raised section of the second portion and the tapered trailing edge of the protrusions. In this way the wear member retaining assembly is self-locking. The biasing avoids situations where the wear member retaining assembly comes loose and disengages unintentionally.

[0300] A further advantage of the preferred embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly is that the key does not protrude further than the wear surface of the wear member. Thus, the key or portion thereof is not exposed to wearing / or damage that could seize or deform the key in such a way as to impede removal of the wear member. In particular, if the shank protrudes into a chute.

[0301] Another advantage of the preferred embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly is that the shank does not protrude further than the first side of the structure. This makes it easier to position the wear member on the structure, and when the wear member is worn away the shank is not exposed to wearing / or damage that could seize or deform the shank in such a way as to impede removal of the wear member.

[0302] A further advantage of the preferred embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly is that the key head can be removed independently from the key shank.

[0303] Another advantage of the preferred embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly includes that the wear member can be secured to the structure from one side. This is beneficial if the other side of the structure is inaccessible or if accessing the other side requires scaffolding to access. Further, repair, maintenance, and / or removal of the wear member retaining assembly can be performed from one side.

[0304] A further advantage of the preferred embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly is that the wear member retaining assembly can be fitted to existing bins without the need to scaffold the external surfaces.

[0305] Another advantage of the preferred embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly is that in the event the key head is removed and the key shank remains engaged with the retainer, the the tool fitting recess of the key shank facilitates another method of removal of the key shank from the retainer.

[0306] A further advantage of the preferred embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly is that the fixing tool allows for the installation of a plurality of retainers in a plurality of holes in a structure at consistently similar depths.

[0307] Another advantage of the preferred embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly is that the wear member retaining assembly requires a round hole to be drilled into the structure rather than milling an elongated slot. Drilling is a more efficient process and less expensive than milling. Drilling can also be easily performed on-site rather than having to remove a portion of the structure to be machined in a workshop. Another advantage of the wear member retaining assembly is that in an embodiment where the retainer is enclosed, the enclosed retainer greatly reduces the chances of component pieces from falling away from the point of installation. This addresses the hazard caused by falling objects which may cause harm to personnel or damage to equipment.

[0308] A further advantage of an embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly including a cap is that the cap prevents uneven wearing in the distinctive tear drop wear pattern common to installations with known fasteners.

[0309] Another advantage of an embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly including a cap is that the cap protects the key head and key shank from damage. The key head and key shank will therefore have a greater operational life and can be reused in other assemblies.

[0310] A further advantage of an embodiment of the wear member retaining assembly including a cap is that the retainer, key shank and key head can be produced to standardised dimensions with the cap being variable to suit differences in liner thicknesses. Therefore, the metal components can be universally applied to a variety of installations with the cap being variable in thickness to suit site specific variations in wear liner thickness. The cap is cheaper to manufacture that the retainer, key shank and key head due to these other components being made from metal, commonly structural grade steel. Thus, this arrangement is more cost effective than manufacturing entire assemblies to suit wear liner thickness variations.

[0311] Another advantage of the wear member retaining assembly is that existing installations that use a slotted hole in the structure can accommodate the present wear member retaining assembly or can be easily retrofitted to accommodate the present wear member retaining assembly. Larger holes can be drilled into the structure more easily than machining slots. VARIATIONS
