[0009] 3-Hydroxypropylesters as emulsifying agents

[0010] 5 The present invention primarily relates to a composition comprising one or both compound(s) of formula (I) as defined herein and one or more emulsifier(s). The present invention further relates to a method of reducing the average size of water or oil droplets in an emulsion, comprising or consisting of the steps as defined herein. Moreover, the present invention relates to the use of a compound of formula (I) or of a mixture of both compounds0 of formula (I) or of a composition comprising one or both compounds of formula (I) as defined herein for reducing the average size of water or oil droplets in an emulsion. Lastly, the present invention relates to a composition, preferably personal care, household, or pharmaceutical product, comprising one or both compound(s) of formula (I) as defined herein. The present invention is one of a series of inventions related to 3-hydroxypropylesters and structurally related compounds co-filed by the same applicant and on the same date as PCT patent applications, which are titled “3-Hydroxypropylesters as antioxidants and tocopherol boosters”, “3-Hydroxypropylesters as solubility enhancers for lipophilic ingredients”, “3-Hydroxypropylesters as foam and viscosity modulating agents in surfactant containing formulations”, “3-Hydroxypropylesters as antimicrobial agents”,0 and “Antimicrobial synergies”, whose content is incorporated herein by way of reference.

[0011] Further aspects of the present invention will arise from the description below, in particular from the examples, as well as from the attached patent claims. Typically, personal care formulations comprise a multitude of components. Looking at the listing of ingredients for an average night cream, for instance, one can find up to 20 components and there has been a tendency to add as many ingredients as possible in orderto address many different issues at the same time. Many consumers equal complexity of a personal care formulation with benefit and accept high prices, since they expect an accordingly high performance. On the other hand, the more complex a personal care formulation becomes, the more difficult it is to avoid negative interactions between the components. A major problem for personal care formulations, in particular for all types of emulsions, still is their stability, especially in case they are subjected to difficult storage conditions like particularly high or low temperatures. Smaller oil droplets lead to improved stability of an emulsion and indicate co-emulsifying properties of new ingredients. Multifunctional ingredients lead to less complex formulations. Ingredients, which are able to reduce the average size of water or oil droplets in an emulsion, are therefore highly sought after in the cosmetic industry.

[0012] The sensorial profile of personal care formulations is also an important factor in customer acceptance. Spreadability, afterfeel and smell are important parameters contributing to the overall liking of a personal care formulation after application to skin: The fasterthe oil bodies of an emulsion can be spread on the skin, the better the perception of the customer. The spreading behaviour of a formulation - and therefore its sensorial profile - is linked to the average particle size of the droplets in the composition. The smaller the droplets are, the faster the spreading takes place. As a consequence, there is still a need for ingredients which shift the average particle size distribution in emulsions to lower values.

[0013] Therefore, it was a primary object of the present invention to provide ingredients, which are able to reduce the average size of water or oil droplets in emulsions. Moreover, it was an object of the present invention to provide compositions, preferably in the form of emulsions, wherein the average size of the water or oil droplets is as small as possible.

[0014] Further objects underlying the present invention follow from the description below and the present patent claims.

[0015] According to a first aspect of the present invention, the stated objects are achieved by a composition comprising (i) one or both compound(s) of formula (I) wherein R is selected from the group consisting of n-nonyl and n-undecyl, and

[0016] (ii) one or more emulsifier(s).

[0017] The compound of formula (I) preferably is either 3-hydroxypropyldecanoate with the following structure (la) or is 3-hydroxypropyldodecanoate with the following structure (lb)

[0018] (lb).

[0019] During the studies underlying the present invention, it was surprisingly found that compositions according to the invention display particularly advantageous emulsifying properties (cf. the examples below for further details). In particular, it was surprisingly found that the compositions according to the invention (if not emulsions themselves) support the formation of water or oil droplets with a particularly small average size in emulsions or (if emulsions themselves) contain water or oil droplets with a particularly small average size.

[0020] Moreover, the compounds of formula (I) are to be understood as preferred compounds of the present invention only, and the aspects, embodiments, features and effects described in conjunction with the compounds of formula (I) are to be understood to be correspondingly applicable to the compounds of formula (II). This means, for instance, that the compounds of formula (II) can be used for the purposes, in the methods or in the preparations, as described herein in place of the compounds of formula (I). It likewise means, for example, that in preferred compounds of formula (II), X corresponds to R as defined in formula (I), or that preferred preparations may comprise the compounds of formula (II) in the same amount as described for the compounds of formula (I).

[0021] The compounds of formula (II) are defined as follows: with n = 1-10 wherein X is: • linear C5 - C14, preferably Ce - C14, more preferably C7 - C13, yet more preferably

Assessment of the biobased carbon in a material can be performed through standard test methods. Using radiocarbon and isotope ratio mass spectrometry analysis, the biobased content of materials can be determined. ASTM International, formally known as the American Society for Testing and Materials, has established a standard test method for assessing the biobased content of materials. The ASTM method is designated ASTM D6866. According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, more than 50% of the carbon atoms contained in a compound of formula (I) are biobased, based on the total number of carbon atoms contained in said compound of formula (I). More preferably, more than 60%, 70%, 75%, 80%, 85%, or 90% of the carbon atoms contained in a compound of formula (I) are biobased, based on the total number of carbon atoms contained in said compound of formula (I).
