The invention relates to a method (100) for controlling an illumination device (10) of a passenger compartment (12). In the method, the passenger compartment (12) is subdivided (102) into a plurality of zones (14, 16). Furthermore, information relating to a reference object (18) located in a predetermined zone of the plurality of zones (14, 10 16) is acquired (104). On the basis of the acquired (104) information, at least a part of the illumination device (10) associated with this predetermined zone is actuated (106) separately.
