AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current federated learning procedures face challenges with phase uncertainties in wireless communications, leading to inefficiencies and increased bit error rates, particularly when using on-off signaling.

Method used

The implementation of differential binary phase shift keying (DBPSK) transmission schemes, where user equipment (UE) generates a bit sequence based on sign values associated with model parameters and creates modulation symbols with phase differences indicating bit values, thereby reducing resource usage and mitigating phase uncertainty effects.

Benefits of technology

DBPSK transmission schemes reduce the number of resource elements required for transmission, minimize the impact of phase uncertainties, and improve transmission performance compared to on-off signaling, resulting in a more efficient and reliable federated learning process.

Abstract

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may receive control signaling that includes an allocation of a set of resource elements (REs) for indication of sign values associated with a set of model parameters. The UE may generate a bit sequence based on the sign values of each model parameter, where a respective bit value for each bit of the bit sequence represents a respective sign value associated with each model parameter. In response to generating the bit sequence, the UE may generate a set of modulation symbols based on the bit sequence, where a phase difference between consecutive modulation symbols indicates a respective bit value of each bit of the bit sequence. Based on generating the set of modulation symbols, the UE may transmit each modulation symbol of the set of modulation symbols via a respective RE of the set of REs.
