Description

The present invention relates to a two-part composition for hair treatment. Despite considerable amounts of research into compositions for hair treatment, problems with them remain. Issues include the build-up of hair treatment products on a scalp of a hair treatment product user; oxidative stress as well as inflammation around hair follicles and on the scalp caused by free radicals; and poor scalp pH balance which causes bacterial growth. A way to ameliorate these problems has been sought. According to the invention there is provided a two-part composition for treating hair which composition comprises (a) a first composition comprising an acidic exfoliant; and (b) a second composition comprising a hair treatment agent and an anthocyanin dye; wherein the pH of composition (a) is lower than the pH of composition (b) such that the colour of the anthocyanin dye changes on contact with composition (a) wherein the two-part composition when mixed has a balanced acidic pH to help maintain the natural scalp environment. According to the invention there is also provided a method of hair and / or scalp treatment wherein the method comprises the steps of (i) applying a first composition comprising an acidic exfoliant to the hair and / or scalp; and (ii) applying a second composition comprising a hair treatment agent and an anthocyanin dye to the hair and / or scalp; wherein the pH of the first composition (a) is lower than the pH of the second composition (b) such that the colour of the anthocyanin dye changes on contact with the first composition (a); and wherein the two-part composition when mixed has a balanced acidic pH to help maintain the natural scalp environment. Advantages of the invention include that the inclusion of an acidic exfoliant reduces the build-up of hair treatment products on a scalp and that the anthocyanin dye has an antioxidant effect which reduces oxidative stress and inflammation of the scalp and hair follicles. Furthermore, the balanced pH of the composition helps to reduce bacterial growth on the scalp. In some embodiments, the balanced acidic pH is from 3 to 6. In some embodiments, the balanced acidic pH is from 4 to 5.5. In some embodiments, the balanced acidic pH is from 4.5 to 6. In some embodiments, the balanced acidic pH is from 4.5 to 5.5. The acidic exfoliant was 30% Citric Acid Solution (aqua, citric acid) from GCD. EXAMPLE 1 A lemon scented exfoliator hair tonic was prepared as follows. The Phase A ingredients listed in Table 1 were combined in a main vessel and then homogenised to uniformity at 2000rpm to ensure the Cobiogum was fully dispersed with no lumps. The Phase B ingredients were then combined in a separate vessel and heated at 50°C until PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil had melted. The Phase B ingredients were added to the main vessel and homogenised at 3000-5000rpm to uniformity. The Phase C ingredients were added to the main vessel and homogenised at 3000-5000rpm to uniformity. The pH of the contents of the main vessel was adjusted to between 3.5 and 3.8 with Phase D. As an alternative, the Ph could be adjusted with citric acid. After 12 hours, the hair tonic was homogenises to ensure that the fluorescent dye was completely mixed in and to ensure the bulk was fully uniform. The Ph of the water phase was adjusted to 5.0 before the Ph-dependent dye was added. The Phase B ingredients were then added to the main vessel and homogenised to uniformity at 3000rpm. In an alternative embodiment, the phase A and B ingredients may be homogenised to uniformity at 3000rpm to 6000rpm, depending on batch size. The Phase C ingredients were added to the main vessel and homogenised at 3000rpm. In an alternative embodiment, the phase A, B and C ingredients may be homogenised to uniformity at 3000rpm to 6000rpm, depending on batch size. The Phase D ingredients were added to the main vessel and homogenised at 3000rpm. In an alternative embodiment, the phase A, B, C and D ingredients may be homogenised to uniformity at 3000rpm to 6000rpm, depending on batch size. The Phase E ingredients were added to the main vessel and homogenised at 3000rpm. In an alternative embodiment, the phase A, B, C, D, and E ingredients may be homogenised to uniformity at 3000rpm to 6000rpm, depending on batch size. Advantages of lemon oil hydrosol include that it cleanses an oily scalp, removes dead skin cells, removes bacterial growth which can cause infections, removes sebum which can clog hair follicles and prevent hair growth, and removes bacteria, which can cause weakened follicles causing hair loss. Advantages of using an anti-inflammatory agent (Witch hazel) include that it provides gentle astringent properties to help control excess oil and tighten pores without overdrying the skin. Advantages of including a nonionic surfactant (hydrogenated castor oil) include that removes sebum which can clog hair follicles and prevent hair growth, and removes bacteria, which can cause weakened follicles causing hair loss.
