Abstract

A carrier head comprises an internal piezoelectric disc pump, and at least one adapter for engaging at least one pipette tip or at least one end-application part. The carrier head may be included in an automated apparatus that includes an XYZ cartesian or rotational apparatus. The carrier head may also be included in an automated apparatus that includes: (i) a carrier block for holding and positioning the carrier head; (ii) a positioning strut for holding and positioning the carrier block; and (iii) at least one deck comprising at least one recessed zone. A method of automated configuration of pipette tips is also provided, which comprises operating the carrier head to configure an array of pipette tips or end-application parts, by moving at least one pipette tip or end-application part from one plate object to another plate object; or to reconfigure an array of pipette tips or end-application parts, by moving at least one pipette tip or end-application part from one position within a plate object to another position within the same plate object.
