Abstract

An apparatus configured to operate a process for the atomisation of a molten calciferous material, the apparatus comprising; a reservoir 302 for containing a molten calciferous material 301 comprising an outlet 303 to produce at least one molten calciferous stream 307; and means for directing at least one fluid stream 305 at the molten calciferous stream 307 such that the fluid stream 305 impinges the molten calciferous stream at an angle 306 effective to atomise the molten calciferous stream to produce atomised particulate material 308. The molten calciferous material feedstock may be steel or copper slag, the steel slag may be obtained from an electric arc furnace, basic oxygen furnace, a blast furnace, or any other conventional steelmaking facility. The fluid stream may comprise streams on opposite sides of the molten stream, and may be selected from water, oil, gas, or a compatible mixture thereof. Both a system for the large-scale atomisation of molten calciferous material comprising a multiplicity of apparatus’, and a process for atomising a molten calciferous material, are defined. An atomised particulate material produced by the apparatus, system or process is defined, as is the use of the atomised particulate material as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). Figure 3
