AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing methods for preparing block copolymers require additional time and energy due to transesterification steps and involve the use of organic solvents, which complicate the process and generate waste.

Method used

A method for preparing block copolymers in an aqueous medium using reversible addition-cleavage chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) to form blocks with specific monomer compositions, eliminating the need for transesterification and solvent distillation, and allowing for moderate temperature polymerization.

Benefits of technology

The method produces block copolymers suitable as dispersants for solid particles, reducing energy consumption, waste generation, and simplifying the process while maintaining high performance.

Abstract

This invention provides a method for preparing block copolymers suitable as dispersants for solid particles. [Solution] The present invention relates to a method for preparing a block copolymer, comprising: a) preparing a first polymer block by polymerizing a first monomer composition containing at least 50.0 mol% of one or more ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomers selected from monomers having ether groups and monomers having hydroxyl groups, which contain 0.0 to 40.0 mol% methacrylic acid and have a solubility in water at 20°C exceeding 500 g / l, in an aqueous medium under reversible addition-cleavage-chain transfer polymerization conditions; and b) preparing a second polymer block by polymerizing a second monomer composition containing at least 60.0 wt% of one or more ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomers which have a solubility in water at 20°C less than 50 g / l.
