Abstract
This paper describes a technique for measuring network path performance using multi-layer tunneling technology. It discloses a technique that enables the measurement of performance metrics across a network segment containing at least one router node in a distributed environment including one or more nodes configured to inject network traffic (compute nodes) and one or more nodes not configured to inject network traffic (router nodes). In one implementation, one or more router nodes are configured using tunnel termination endpoints and / or locally associated label-port mappings, allowing for the measurement of performance metrics between router nodes or between router nodes and compute nodes. Performance metrics that can be measured using the techniques disclosed herein include network latency, packet loss, and jitter. In addition, these techniques can be used for fault isolation.
