Coordinating persistent status information with multiple file servers

The invention provides a storage system, and a method for operating a storage system, that provides for relatively rapid and reliable takeover among a plurality of independent file servers. Each file server maintains a reliable communication path to the others. Each file server maintains its own state in reliable memory. Each file server regularly confirms the state of the other file servers. Each file server labels messages on the redundant communication paths, so as to allow other file servers to combine the redundant communication paths into a single ordered stream of messages. Each file server maintains its own state in its persistent memory and compares that state with the ordered stream of messages, so as to determine whether other file servers have progressed beyond the file server's own last known state. Each file server uses the shared resources (such as magnetic disks) themselves as part of the redundant communication paths, so as to prevent mutual attempts at takeover of resources when each file server believes the other to have failed. Each file server provides a status report to the others when recovering from an error, so as to prevent the possibility of multiple file servers each repeatedly failing and attempting to seize the resources of the others.

Method, apparatus and computer program product for allocating resources in wireless communication network

The present application discloses a method, an apparatus and a computer program product for allocating resources for a Device-to-Device (D2D) direct communication user equipment in a wireless communication network, wherein the method comprises: transmitting a communication channel status report regarding Device-to-Device direct communication to a base station; receiving resource allocation instructions generated by the base station based on the communication channel status report; and performing Device-to-Device direct communication between user equipments on the allocated resources; the disclosed apparatus comprises transmitting means for transmitting a communication channel status report regarding Device-to-Device direct communication to a base station; receiving means for receiving resource allocation instructions generated by the base station based on the communication channel status report; and performing means for performing Device-to-Device direct communication between user equipments on the allocated resources. By using the method, apparatus and computer program product disclosed in the present application, resource sharing/allocation collision between the D2D user equipment and cellular user equipment can be effectively reduced and use rate of resources can be improved.

Tracking control and logistics system and method

A system, apparatus, and method are disclosed for monitoring, tracking, and logistics purposes that preferably includes a monitoring unit wherein data is processed using a microcontroller. The monitoring unit includes an interface with the target or asset to be tracked such that electrical signals may be sent between the target and monitoring unit to denote events from the target, e.g., air bag deployment and for activating features of the target, e.g., an alarm. The interface may be unique for each monitoring unit because unique information relating to each interface is stored in the system database, e.g., data may be related to a temperature in one unit and to a movement sensor indication in another. Therefore, the system may respond appropriately to signals having unique meanings from each different monitoring unit. A pager unit with a pager modem is controlled by the microcontroller to thereby encode the signals for transmission. A pager transmitter / receiver network is used for sending and receiving messages from the monitoring unit. The pager transmitter / receiver network is in communication with a server and the database. The server may be accessed by multiple clients over the Internet or other lines of communication so that the clients at numerous different remote locations may activate controls on their respective one or more remote targets / assets, find the locations thereof, and receive cumulative status reports.

System and methods for providing network quarantine

A system and method for ensuring that machines having invalid or corrupt states are restricted from accessing network resources are provided. A quarantine server located on a trusted machine in a network provides a bill of health to a quarantine agent located on a client computer that wishes to gain access to network resources administered by an organization. The quarantine agent requests bill of health from the quarantine server, and receives a manifest of checks that the client computer must perform. The quarantine agent then sends a status report on the checks back to the quarantine server. If the client computer is in a valid security state, the bill of health is issued to the client. If the client computer is in an invalid state, the client is directed to install the appropriate software/patches to achieve a valid state. When a client requests the use of network resources from a network administrator, the network administrator requests the client's bill of health. If the bill of health is valid, the client is admitted to the network. If the bill of health is invalid, or if the client does not have a quarantine agent, the client is placed in quarantine, in which the only network resources accessible to the client are those necessary to install the quarantine agent and requisite software/patches to achieve a valid state.
