Methods and apparatus for deploying a generic application engine in a browser program executing on a client platform are described. As a method, an application engine kernel is formed in the browser program that is independent of the client platform and the browser program concurrently with loading user interface (UI) components and corresponding data components associated with the application engine. A minimum required subset of application engine components are then loaded by the kernel in order to process any initial user requests.

Techniques for controlling zone group and zone group characteristics such as audio volume in a multi-zone system are disclosed. The multi-zone system includes a number of multimedia players, each preferably located in a zone. The invention permits information segments to be inserted at a rate that is twice as fast as the maximum extraction rate. Pairs of permanent and temporary registers are organized into a hierarchical sequence of stages. Generally, information segments with lower field ranks move systolically through the stages to temporary registers in higher sequence stages. Information segments with higher field ranks move systolically through the stages to permanent registers lower in the sequence of stages. Client side user identification is provided to track user activity data on web servers that do not communicate with the global service and do not process activity for category information. User profiles may be shared among web sites that form alliances. User activity data may be aggregated along various dimensions including users/user groups, categorization, and time to provide robust models of interest at any desired time scale.
