Internet profiling

A system, method, and various software products provide for consistent identification of web users across multiple web sites, servers and domains, monitoring and capture of data describing the users' web activities, categorization of the web activity data, aggregation of the data into time dependent models describing interest of users and groups over time. Categorization is made with respect to a category tree which may be standardized or customized for each web site. User groups may be defined based on membership rules for category interest information and demographics. Individual user profiles are then created for users automatically based on satisfaction of the user group membership rules. As new data is collected on a user over time, the category interest information extracted from the user's web activity is updated to form a current model of the user's interests relative to the various categories. This information is also used to automatically update group membership and user profile information. Identification of users across multiple sites is provided by a global service that recognizes each user and provides a globally unique identifier to a requesting web server, which can use the identifier to accumulate activity data for the user. Client side user identification is provided to track user activity data on web servers that do not communicate with the global service and do not process activity for category information. User profiles may be shared among web sites that form alliances. User activity data may be aggregated along various dimensions including users/user groups, categorization, and time to provide robust models of interest at any desired time scale.

A method for providing automatic, personalized information services to a computer user includes the following steps: transparently monitoring user interactions with data during normal use of the computer; updating user-specific data files including a set of user-related documents; estimating parameters of a learning machine that define a User Model specific to the user, using the user-specific data files; analyzing a document to identify its properties; estimating the probability that the user is interested in the document by applying the document properties to the parameters of the User Model; and providing personalized services based on the estimated probability. Personalized services include personalized searches that return only documents of interest to the user, personalized crawling for maintaining an index of documents of interest to the user; personalized navigation that recommends interesting documents that are hyperlinked to documents currently being viewed; and personalized news, in which a third party server customized its interaction with the user. The User Model includes continually-updated measures of user interest in words or phrases, web sites, topics, products, and product features. The measures are updated based on both positive examples, such as documents the user bookmarks, and negative examples, such as search results that the user does not follow. Users are clustered into groups of similar users by calculating the distance between User Models.

Method and apparatus for a web-based application service model for security management

The invention combines cryptographic key management technology with various authentication options and the use of a companion PKI system in a web-centric cryptographic key management security method and apparatus called PXa3(TM) (Precise eXtensible Authentication, Authorization and Administration). The PXa3 model uses a security profile unique to a network user and the member domain(s) he/she belongs to. A PXa3 server holds all private keys and certificates, the user's security profile, including credentials and the optional authentication enrollment data. The server maintains a security profile for each user, and administrators simply transmitted credential updates and other periodic maintenance updates to users via their PXa3 server-based member accounts. Domain and workgroup administrators also perform administrative chores via a connection to the PXa3 web site, rather than on a local workstation. A member's security profile, containing algorithm access permissions, credentials, domain and maintenance values, a file header encrypting key, optional biometric templates, and domain-specific policies is contained in one of two places: either on a removable cryptographic token (e.g., a smart card), or on a central server-based profile maintained for each member and available as a downloadable "soft token" over any Internet connection.

System and method for adding an advertisement to a personal communication

A system and method is provided for adding an advertisement to a digital message and providing additional communication data to a recipient that interacts with the advertisement regardless of the network device the recipient is utilizing. An advertisement generator residing on a network host accepts digital messages from contributors and allows the contributors to select an advertisement to be displayed with their contributed messages. These digital messages may be sent to specified recipients or published on a Web site. Using stored personal data associated with the contributor and with the recipient of a digital message, in addition to the content of the message itself, the advertisement generator suggests advertisements to be included with the digital messages based on their contextual relevance. In exchange for including an advertisement with a digital message, a contributor is compensated. If the contributor-selected advertisement is provided by a third party advertiser, the message, contributor, and advertisement data is utilized to compensate the contributor of that message for sending it to at least one recipient or posting it on a Web site. If the advertisement is interactive, and the advertisement is interacted with, the advertisement generator will provide the recipient with additional communication data in a format that can be understood by the recipient network device.

An online Gift Registry Service provides registration of information for a gift registrant and allows access to the registry by potential gift giver users. In addition, users can tag items of interest at participating Service Provider (SP) sites and the SP sites will register these items with the Gift Registry Service on the user's behalf. It further provides a streamlined checkout process for purchasing these gift items with the registered SP sites (e.g. World Wide Web sites) over a distributed public network. Users and Service Providers (SP) initially register with the Gift Registry Service and are provided additional functionality. For users, a reminder service is provided to notify individuals automatically upon the trigger of certain events, such as important dates or product sales from online merchants. In addition, there are various occasion planning services available such as distribution lists, discussion groups, and other related resources for multiple events including weddings, baby showers, etc. These other resources include sending out announcements, reserving halls, and contracting services of related businesses for the occasion. A distinct advantage of this system is that users can perform all the planning for the event online in the comfort of their home or office. Service Providers on the other hand, can register system notification messages to be triggered on pre-determined events. In addition, Service Providers can obtain marketing information to tailor their products and services.
