An interactive television system that renders on-demand interactive multimedia services for a community of users. The interactive multimedia is delivered to each user on a TV or on a LAN-node (Local-Area-Network) computer through an "interactive TV channel" created and controlled by a Channel-processor, which can be implemented as either a PC or a high-end workstation. The system employs a direct-access on-demand workgroup server. It is equipped with the primary on-demand multimedia data base stored on a hard disk subsystem that is connected directly to the Channel-processors through an internal workgroup link. Information identifying the individual may be obtained via a biometrics sensor, a data card, a remote monitoring device, or the interception of data from a separate information system. As the present invention has multi-user capabilities, it can be used in a public place, such as a pharmacy or health care clinic. In one embodiment, a method comprises playing back a set of recorded transactions on a client, monitoring selected performance-related parameters at the client, and transmitting monitored data to the server for analysis or for viewing by a system administrator. The set of transactions is recorded on a first client by replacing a standard Internet transaction driver (e.g., WinInet.DLL) with a modified driver that is configured to intercept function calls. The function calls and corresponding parameters are recorded in a file which is later transmitted to a client, where the recorded transaction information is used to reproduce the transactions on the client. As the transactions are played back, performance data may be monitored and forwarded to a management server for analysis, display, etc.

Systems and methods, including computer program products, providing high-availability in server systems. In one implementation, a server system is cluster of two or more autonomous server nodes, each running one or more virtual servers. When a node fails, its virtual servers are migrated to one or more other nodes. Connectivity between nodes and clients is based on virtual IP addresses, where each virtual server has one or more virtual IP addresses. Virtual servers can be assigned failover priorities, and, in failover, higher priority virtual servers can be migrated before lower priority ones. Load balancing can be provided by distributing virtual servers from a failed node to multiple different nodes. When a port within a node fails, the node can reassign virtual IP addresses from the failed port to other ports on the node until no good ports remain and only then migrate virtual servers to another node or nodes.

The online music distribution system provides security through multiple layers of encryption, and the cryptographic binding of purchased audio data to each specific purchaser. In one embodiment, the online music distribution system is a client-server system including a content manager, a delivery server, and an HTTP server, communicating with a client system including a Web browser and a media player. The content manager provides for management of media and audio content, and processing of purchase requests. The delivery server provides delivery of the purchased media data. The Web browser and HTTP server provide a communications interface over the public network between the content manager and media players. The media player provides for encryption of user personal information, and for decryption and playback of purchased media data. Security of purchased media data is enhanced in part by the use of a personal, digital passport in each media player. The digital passport contains identifying information that identifies the purchaser, along with confidential information, such as credit card number, and encryption data, such as the media player's public and private keys. The media player encryption data is used to encrypt purchased media data, which is decrypted in real time by the media player. An approach for establishing secure multicast communication among multiple event service nodes is disclosed. The event service nodes, which can be distributed throughout an enterprise domain, are organized in a logical tree that mimics the logical tree arrangement of domains in a directory server system. The attributes of the event service nodes include the group session key and the private keys of the event service nodes that are members of the multicast or broadcast groups. The private keys provide unique identification values for the event service nodes, thereby facilitating distribution of such keys. Because keys as well as key version information are housed in the directory, multicast security can readily be achieved over any number of network domains across the entire enterprise. Key information is stored in, and the logical tree is supported by, a directory service. Replication of the directory accomplishes distribution of keys. A portion of keyword information associated with the portion of web page content is identified. According to a specific embodiment, the portion of keyword information includes at least one keyword. Contextual information to be delivered to the end user is selected using the portion of keyword information. According to a specific implementation, the contextual information corresponds to ad information which is provided by a campaign provider server system. A set of web page modification instructions is generated using the contextual information. According to a specific embodiment, the set of web page modification instructions includes instructions for modifying the web page content to include the selected contextual information. The set of web page modification instructions is provided to the client system to thereby cause the portion of contextual information to be delivered to the user. According to a specific embodiment, when the client system implements the web page modification instructions, the web page content is caused to be modified in a manner which results in a display of contextual information on the client system.

A server-based desktop-virtual machines architecture may be extended to a client machine. In one embodiment, a user desktop is remotely accessed from a client system. The remote desktop is generated by a first virtual machine running on a server system, which may comprise one or more server computers. During execution of the first virtual machine, writes to a corresponding virtual disk are directed to a delta disk file or redo log. A copy of the virtual disk is created on the client system. When a user decides to “check out” his or her desktop, the first virtual machine is terminated (if it is running) and a copy of the delta disk is created on the client system. Once the delta disk is present on the client system, a second virtual machine can be started on the client system using the virtual disk and delta disk to provide local access to the user's desktop at the client system. This allows the user to then access his or her desktop without being connected to a network.
