System and method for automatically configuring and integrating a radio base station into an existing wireless cellular communication network with full bi-directional roaming and handover capability

A radio base station in a mobile communication network collects information about the network and exchanges data with a configuration device, the Internet System Manager (iSM). The iSM automatically configures and integrates the base station into the network by defining configuration parameter settings that allow fill interoperation of the base station with the network, with regards to roaming and handover in particular, without the need to add or modify parameter settings in other existing network elements. A very large number and high geographical density of such base stations is supported with full interoperation between them, allowing to overcome limitations of conventional mobile communication networks in this regard, by utilizing a certain combination of parameter settings and a new method to address the different base stations in the network.

Updating of internet access point settings in a mobile communication system

A digital mobile communication system is provided with a facility by means of which it can establish a connection to the Internet network (12) via an Internet access point (14, 15). IAP settings needed for establishing a connection are stored in a mobile station (MS). When a mobile station (MS) roams, the closest point may, however, change, and IAP settings should be updated in the mobile station (MS). The invention comprises dividing the mobile communication system into IAP areas, which are given preferred IAPs. An IAP area may be e.g. a mobile communication network (11, 17). Mobile communication networks broadcast system information on the basis of which a mobile station may detect that the IAP area has changed and start a procedure for updating IAP settings. Updating may comprise retrieval of IAP settings from a special server (13) in the network maintained by an Internet service provider. Retrieval can be done e.g. via a short message service center (10). In one embodiment the mobile communication network broadcasts messages giving recommended IAP settings to mobile stations.

Configuration of control channels in a mobile communication system

The invention relates to a method, apparatus and system for configuring control channels in a mobile communication network and a mobile station. In order to suggest another improved scheme for configuring control channels, in particular control channels related to the transmission of user data the invention suggests aligning the size of the control channel information of different formats to an equal number of coded control channel information bits and / or modulation symbols for each control channel. The control channels may comprise scheduling related control information. According to another aspect of the invention, a more flexible solution is proposed that may allow for taking different geometries of mobile stations within a cell into account. Similar to the aspect above, the size of the control channel information is aligned by means of modulation and / or coding, however the control channel information is aligned to one out of a set of numbers of coded control channel information bits and / or modulation symbols for each control channel.

Method for providing a buffer status report in a mobile communication network

A method for providing a buffer status report in a mobile communication network is implemented between a base station and a user equipment. When data arrives to buffers of the user equipment and the priority of a logical channel for the data is higher than those of other logical channels for existing data in the buffers, a short buffer status report associated with the buffer of a logical channel group corresponding to the arrival data is triggered. The user equipment is based on obtained resources allocated by the base station to fill all data of the buffer of the logical channel group in a Protocol Data Unit. If all data of the buffer of the logical channel group corresponding to the arrival data can be completely filled in the Protocol Data Unit, the short buffer status report is canceled. Otherwise, the user equipment transmits the short buffer status report.

Management of session control signaling for multicast/broadcast services

The invention relates to a method for distributing control signaling for session control of a multicast or broadcast service within a mobile communication network. Furthermore the invention also provides a base station, mobile terminal and communication system to perform the proposed method. In order to reduce the number of signaling connections for the service, the invention proposes to avoid the initial distribution of session control signaling in the entire mobile communications network or service area. Rather than providing service related control signaling connections upon session start, the control signaling connections are set up in response to service requests of the mobile terminals requesting the service. According to one further aspect, the mobile terminals send the service requests based on service announcements available at the mobile terminals, i.e. in contrast to conventional implementations, the mobile terminals do not await a notification of the access network on the availability of the service within the cell.
