Method for manufacturing porous glass bodies to reduce attenuation of optical fibers made from porous glass bodies
A two-step heat treatment process effectively removes metals and metal oxides from porous glass bodies, improving optical fiber attenuation and defect density by using halogen gases to vaporize impurities and densify the glass, achieving low signal loss and reduced hole density.

Abstract
The manufacturing method includes a first heat treatment step, in which a porous glass body having a surface and density at its surface is charged into a furnace having heating elements arranged along the length of the porous glass body, and the heating elements are operated for a first period of one hour or more until the inner surface of the porous glass body facing the centerline of the porous glass body has a first temperature of 1250°C or higher, wherein as a result of the first heat treatment step, the density of the porous glass body at its surface increases, but is less than 85% of the closed pore density of a sintered glass preform made from the porous glass body.
