[0008] Corresponding parts are indicated by corresponding reference characters throughout the drawings.
[0009] This disclosure relates generally to compositions, sleeves, cartons, and the like, and packages that hold and display containers such as cans, jars, bottles, and the like. The containers can be used, for example, to package food and beverage products. The containers can be made from materials suitable for packaging a particular food or beverage product, including, but not limited to, aluminum and / or other metals, plastics such as PET, LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, PP, PS, PVC, EVOH, nylon, and the like, glass, or any combination thereof.
[0010] A package according to the present disclosure can accommodate containers of many different shapes. For purposes of illustration and not for the purpose of limiting the scope of the disclosure, the following detailed description describes a beverage container (e.g., a generally cylindrical container such as an aluminum can) that is at least partially disposed in an embodiment of the package. As used herein, the terms "lower", "bottom", "upper" and "top" refer to orientations that are determined with respect to the fully assembled package.
[0011] The present embodiment is directed to a carton or package for mounting to and containing containers. A first embodiment package or carrier 5 is shown assembled in FIG. 4 and mounted to containers C, which are arranged in two rows of three containers C, to form a package 6. As shown in FIG. 2, the containers C are shown as beverage containers having a lower base portion B, a top portion T generally having a neck N tapering inwardly from the lower base portion, a flange portion F at the top of the neck portion extending radially outwardly from the neck portion, and a top surface TS below the flange portion including a pull tab P. Containers of other sizes, shapes, and configurations can be held within the package 5 without departing from the present disclosure. The neck N and flange F of the container C are received in respective openings 37 (broadly, respective "first mounting features") of the package 5 and are held within the package by retention features as further described herein. The containers C may be arranged in other than a 2x3 arrangement (e.g., 2x4, 2x6, 1x3, 1x4, etc.) and the package 5 may include more or less than six containers without departing from this disclosure.
[0012] 1 is a plan view of a first side 11 of a blank 13 used to form a carrier 5. The blank 13 has a longitudinal axis L1 and a transverse axis L2. The blank 13 includes a top or center panel 17 that includes a retention feature. In the illustrated embodiment, the attachment feature includes six openings 37 in the center panel 17, each having a first retention feature including a first curved retention edge 39 extending between two flexible features and a second retention feature including a second curved retention edge 43 opposite the first retention edge 39 and extending between the two flexible features, such that the first retention edge 39 defines a first portion of the opening 37 and the second retention edge 43 defines a second portion of the opening 37. As described herein, the first and second retention edges 39 and 43 are for engaging with diametrically opposed regions of a first and second portion, respectively, of the container C, e.g., a neck N below a flange F.
[0013] The retention edges 39, 43 can define respective radii of curvature that are substantially the same or equal, or, as described further herein, the retention edges 39, 43 can define different radii of curvature. In one embodiment, the opening 37 in the central panel 17 has a diameter D1 that is smaller than a diameter D2 of the flange F of the container C.
[0014] In the illustrated embodiment, the flexible feature is part of the attachment feature of the blank 13 and includes first and second cutouts 41 (broadly, the "first flexible feature" and "second flexible feature," respectively) spaced apart about the periphery of the opening 37 that provide respective weakened regions extending inwardly from the retention edges 39, 43. As illustrated, the cutouts 41 are weakened regions that may have a generally U-shaped configuration, either elongated or irregular, although the cutouts 41 may have other shapes, arrangements and / or configurations without departing from this disclosure.
[0015] 1A, an alternative configuration of cutout 41 in opening 37 is shown as a generally linear tear or score line. In alternative embodiments, the flexible feature can have any suitable configuration, such as a slit, opening, aperture, split, fold line, or any other line or area of weakness, without departing from this disclosure.
[0016] The cutouts 41 are spaced apart by an angle B, and the retaining edge 39 extends around the opening 37 at an angle A. In one embodiment, the angle B can be approximately 90 degrees and the angle A can be approximately 270 degrees, although both angles A and B can be greater or less than the amounts shown and described herein without departing from this disclosure. In an alternative embodiment, one or more of the openings 37 can be without the cutout 41, and the retaining edges 39, 43 can meet without any breaks, tears or other weakening features extending therefrom, i.e., the angle A is 360 degrees. In one embodiment, such an opening without the cutout 41 can have a diameter D1 that is smaller than the diameter D2 of the flange F of the container C.
[0017] As shown, a first uninterrupted marginal portion 36 of the central panel 17 extends horizontally away from the first retention edge 39 and from the first cutout 41 to the second cutout 42, and a second uninterrupted marginal portion 38 of the central panel 17 extends horizontally away from the second retention edge 43 and from the first cutout 41 to the second cutout 42. The second retention edge 43 and the cutout 41 form a locking flap or tab 45 in a portion of the second uninterrupted marginal portion 38 of the central panel 17 between the first cutout 41 and the second cutout 42.
[0018] It will be understood that the shape and geometry of edges 39, 43, or other retention features of blank 13 / carrier 5 may be modified to increase the retention force applied to container C and / or to accommodate various sizes and configurations of containers without departing from the scope of this disclosure.
[0019] Still referring to FIG. 1 and further referring to FIGS. 3-5, in one embodiment, a method of forming a package 6 including a carrier 5 and one or more containers C includes obtaining a blank 13 and obtaining a group of containers C (e.g., six containers, although the package 6 can include more or less than six containers). The blank 13 is positioned on top of the group of containers C and a central panel 17 of the blank 13 is pressed downwardly such that a flange F of the container is inserted into each opening 37. A diameter D1 of the opening 37 is smaller than a diameter D2 of the flange F of the container C, thereby allowing the central panel 17 to flex or distort as the flange F is inserted into the opening 37, as shown in FIG. 3, without peeling, damaging or otherwise weakening the material of the blank 13 / central panel 17. After the blank 13 is pressed downwardly onto the containers C, a retaining edge 39, 43 of each opening 37 contacts each container C at a neck portion N of the container C below the flange F, as shown in FIG. 5.
[0020] 26, to facilitate attachment of the central panel 17 and container C, the container C can be tilted or oriented relative to the blank 13. As shown, the container C can be tilted toward the center of the central panel 17 and inserted at least partially into the opening 37. The lower base portion B of the container C can then be pivoted in the direction of the respective arrows AC1, AC2 until the central panel 17 is positioned at the lower neck portion N of the respective flange F of each container C and the container C is in a generally upright orientation extending at least partially through the opening. The above-described insertion of the container C through the respective openings 37 and pivoting of the containers facilitates a gentle and gradual engagement of the top portion T of each container C with the portions of the central panel 17 surrounding the respective openings 37, e.g., the marginal portions 36, 38 and the retention tab 45, so as to minimize, e.g., flexing, stretching or other reconfiguration of the cardboard / material forming the central panel 17.
[0021] With respect to the embodiments described above in which there is no cutout 41 in the openings 37, the cardboard forming the blank 13 / carrier 5 may flex and stretch when such openings are placed over the flanges F of the container C, and may tear and / or weaken at one or more points around the 360-degree edges of the openings 37 to allow the flanges F to fit into their respective openings 37, and the uninterrupted peripheral edge portion of the central panel 17 may be positioned generally horizontally and in contact with the neck N of the container C to allow the central panel 17 to be positioned below the flanges F.
[0022] 5, the marginal portions 36, 38 of the central panel 17 extending between the respective cutouts 41 around the respective openings 37 comprise a continuous portion of the cardboard / material of the central panel 17 that is free of creases, cuts, tears or other forms of weakening such that the marginal portions 36, 38 have enhanced strength characteristics, and therefore result in a stronger attachment of the container C to the package 6. In this regard, when the container C is attached to the central panel 17, the marginal portions 36 and 38 / retention tabs 45 of the central panel 17 are positioned in an approximately horizontal and flush arrangement relative to the remainder of the top panel 17 to contact the container C at opposing faces of the neck N below the flange F. Once the container C is placed within the openings 37 and secured to the central panel 17, the package 6 may be grasped and transported at one or both of the handle openings 71.
[0023] In one embodiment, the flange F of the container C may have a diameter D2 of approximately 53 mm and the opening 37 in the central panel 17 may have a diameter D1 of approximately 52 mm. In one embodiment, the cutouts 41 may be spaced apart an angle B of approximately 90 degrees around the opening 37 and the uninterrupted marginal portion 36 of the cardboard at the edge 39 of the opening 37 extends an angle A of approximately 270 degrees around the opening between the cutouts 41.
[0024] The blank 13 may have features that are other shapes, configurations, sizes and / or locations without departing from this disclosure. All dimensional information provided herein is intended to illustrate example embodiments of the present disclosure and is not intended to limit the scope of the present disclosure, as any dimensions provided herein may be larger or smaller than the specific dimensions disclosed herein.
[0025] Additionally, the marginal portion 36 of the central panel 17 at the edges 39 of each of the pair of openings 37 is shown generally bounded (as shown by dashed lines) for illustrative purposes only because the uninterrupted portion of the cardboard of the central panel 17, as shown, will extend beyond the depicted boundaries of the marginal portion 36. In other embodiments of the present disclosure, the marginal portion 36 adjacent each opening 37 may include a coating, polymeric film, adhesive tape, or other strengthening or reinforcing feature to further strengthen the cardboard in this region of the central panel 17 that contacts the container C and adjacent the openings 37.
[0026] 6 is a plan view of a first side 111 of a blank 113 used to form a carrier 105 and a package 106 including the carrier 105 and one or more containers C according to a second exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure. The blank 113 / carrier 105 can have one or more features that are substantially similar or the same as those described above with respect to the blank 113 / carrier 105, with like or similar features being referenced with like or similar numerals.
[0027] The blank 113 has a longitudinal axis L1 and a transverse axis L2 and includes a top panel 17 foldably connected to a first retention flap 119 at a first transverse fold line 121. The central panel 17 is foldably connected to a second retention flap 123 at a second transverse fold line 125.
[0028] 6, central panel 17 includes six openings 37, each opening 37 having an associated respective cutout 41, retention edges 39, 43, marginal portions 36, 38, and locking tab 45. As shown, each tab 45 is generally adjacent a respective transverse fold line 121, 125.
[0029] Similarly, the first and second retention flaps 119, 123 each have three openings 151 (broadly, respective "second attachment features") that are shaped similarly to the openings 37. The openings 151 are at least partially defined by a third retention feature including a first curved retention edge 153 that defines a first portion of the openings 151 and extends between the two flexible features (broadly, respective "first flexible feature" and "second flexible feature"), and a fourth retention feature including a second curved retention edge 157 that defines a second portion of the openings 151 and extends between the flexible features. The retention edges 153, 157 are for engaging the respective first and second portions of the container C, as described above.
[0030] As discussed above, the flexible features include respective weakened areas extending inwardly from the retention edges 153, 157 to allow the respective retention flaps 119, 123 to flex or bend without weakening when the container C is inserted into the respective opening 151. The flexible features may be cutouts 155 as shown, or may have different configurations as discussed above with respect to cutouts 41.
[0031] The third retention feature may also include a first uninterrupted edge portion 152 of each retention flap 119, 123 extending horizontally away from a respective first retention edge 153, and the fourth retention feature may also include a second uninterrupted edge portion 154 of each retention flap 119, 123 extending horizontally away from a respective second retention edge 157. The second retention edge 157 and cutout 155 form a respective locking flap or locking tab 159 over a portion of the second uninterrupted edge portion 154 of each retention flap 119, 123 and between the respective cutouts 155.
[0032] In the illustrated embodiment, the first and second retention flaps 119, 123 each have three notches 161 (broadly, "second attachment features") at respective perimeters 163, 165 of the respective retention flaps 119, 123. In one embodiment, the openings 151 in the retention flaps 119, 123 are shaped to have a cutout 155 that is smaller than the cutout 41 in the opening 37 in the central panel 17. The smaller cutout 155 thus creates a locking flap 159 that is larger than the locking flap 45 adjacent the opening 37 in the central panel 17. It will be appreciated that the shape and geometry of the edges 39, 43, 157, 153 or other features may be altered to increase the retention force applied to the container C and / or to accommodate various sizes and configurations of containers without departing from the scope of the present disclosure.
[0033] As also shown, the retention flaps 119, 123 each include a respective handle opening 173, 175 that is separately connectable to the retention flaps 119, 123 and foldably connectable to the retention flaps 119, 123 and that align with the respective handle opening 71 in the central panel 17 when the carrier 105 is formed to form the handle 109 of the carrier 105.
[0034] The features of the blank 113 may have other shapes, arrangements and / or configurations without departing from this disclosure.
[0035] 7-9 illustrate various steps in forming a package 106 including a carrier 105 and one or more containers C, according to one exemplary method of the present disclosure. First, a central panel 17 of a blank 113 is attached to the container C such that a surface of the central panel 17 is below or in contact with a bottom surface of a flange F of the container C.
[0036] The first holding flap 119 is then folded in the direction of arrow A1 about the fold line 121 so that the opening 151 of the first holding flap 119 is positioned above three containers C in one row of containers C, with the first holding flap 119 being pushed into face-to-face contact with the central panel 17 so that the surface of the first holding flap 119 is below or in contact with the bottom surface of the flange F of the container C. Next, the second holding flap 123 is folded in the direction of arrow A2 about the fold line 125 so that the opening 151 of the second holding flap 123 is positioned above three containers C in the other row of containers C, with the second holding flap 123 being pushed into face-to-face contact with the central panel 17 so that the surface of the second holding flap 123 is below or in contact with the bottom surface of the flange F of the container C. Additionally, respective notches 161 defined along the free edge of each holding flap 119, 123 may also abut and / or at least partially engage a bottom surface of the flange F of the respective container C. This additional layer of material provided by portions of the respective holding flaps 119, 123 may enhance engagement of the carrier 105 with the container C. In one embodiment, an outer peripheral portion of the second holding flap 123 may overlap and be in face-to-face contact with an outer peripheral portion of the first holding flap 119.
[0037] Each of the overlapping openings 37 and 151 securely attaches the container C to the carrier 105 and forms a stable containment area in the carrier 105 / package 106 that includes at least two layers of material. 157 The openings 37 and 151 having the circular flanges F and 156 are shaped to facilitate receiving the circular flanges F of the containers C and to securely engage and lock the containers C with the package 106. Additionally, the respective locking flaps 45, 159 formed between the respective cutouts 41, 155 in the central panel 17 and the retaining flaps 119, 123 are free of any breaks or tears, thereby increasing the biasing force of the retaining flaps 119, 123 on the containers C. The direction of such biasing force is shown diagrammatically in FIG. 9 by respective arrows A3, A4. The handles 109 are oriented such that all six containers C are secured to the carrier 105 / package 106 and can be lifted by grasping and holding at the handles. 109 The carrier 105 / package 106 can be lifted and transported in the
[0038] Glue or other adhesive may be applied to one or more of the panels and / or flaps of the blank 113 to secure the carrier 105 in the folded position. Additionally, the carrier 105 may include a dispensing feature to facilitate removal of the container C therefrom. The blank 113 may be of other shapes and / or configurations and the carrier 105 may have features that are other shapes and / or configurations without departing from this disclosure. In further embodiments, the blank 113 may have panels or flaps that extend downward from the top of the container or a flange of the container to provide a billboard to display information.
[0039] 10 illustrates a first side 211 of blank 213 forming carrier 205 (FIG. 11) according to a third exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure. Blank 213 and carrier 205 can have one or more features that are substantially similar or the same as those disclosed above with respect to blank 13 / carrier 5 and blank 113 / carrier 105, with similar or like features being indicated with similar or like reference numerals.
[0040] 10, the blank 213 has a longitudinal axis L1 and a transverse axis L2 and includes a first retention flap 119 and a second retention flap 123 that are alternatively shaped as compared to the retention flaps 119, 123 of the second exemplary embodiment. The retention flaps 119, 123 include respective curved notches 261 at respective edges 263, 265 of the retention flaps 119, 123. In such a configuration, the retention flaps 119, 123 do not include the opening 151 of the second exemplary embodiment.
[0041] The carrier 205 of the third exemplary embodiment is formed in a manner similar to that described herein for the second exemplary embodiment, in which the retention flaps 119, 123 have a shorter width such that they do not overlap the retention flaps of the blank 213 when the carrier 205 is formed, as shown in Figure 11. The features of the second embodiment may be of other shapes, arrangements, configurations, and / or may be omitted without departing from this disclosure.
[0042] 12, there is shown a handle blank 277 which forms a handle 279 for the package 206. As shown, the handle blank 277 has respective cutouts 279a, 279b, 279c, 279d, 279e, 279f, 279g, 279h ... 283 The handle panel 281 includes a pair of free edges 284, 286 that define a gap between the handle panel 281 and the handle flaps 293. In the handle panel 281, a pair of arcuate cuts 291 may define handle flaps 293.
[0043] 13, the handle panel 281 can be positioned in at least partial face-to-face contact with the central panel 17 between the rows of containers C of the package 206 such that the notches 283 at least partially engage the bottom surface of the flange F of the respective container C to fixedly couple the handle panel 281 to the package 206. In this arrangement, the handle flap 293 of the handle panel 281 is aligned with the handle opening 71 of the central panel 17 of the carrier 205 to allow a user or customer to separate the handle flap 293 from the handle panel 281 to provide a passageway for one or more of their fingers to provide a reinforced, e.g., two-ply, handle 279 by which the user or customer can grip and / or hold the package 206.
[0044] 14 illustrates a first side 311 of a blank 313 that forms a carrier 305 and a package 306 (FIG. 15) that includes the carrier 305 and one or more containers C according to a fourth exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure. The blank 313 and carrier 305 can have one or more features that are substantially similar or the same as those described above with respect to blank 13 / carrier 5, blank 113 / carrier 105, and blank 213 / carrier 205, with similar or like features being indicated with similar or like reference numerals.
[0045] The blank 313 includes a central panel 317 having a longitudinal axis L1 and a transverse axis L2 and having attachment features (broadly, respective "first attachment features") that include openings 337 defined at least in part by first and second retention features including respective first curved retention edges 339 and second curved retention edges 343 opposing the first curved retention edges 339 that define respective first and second portions of the opening 337. The first and second retention features of the central panel 317 can also include first and second uninterrupted marginal portions 336 and 338 that extend away from the respective retention edges 339, 343 of each opening 337.
[0046] 16, the second retaining edge 343 is a second arc having a second radius of curvature R2 measured relative to a center point G2 that is greater than the first radius of curvature R1 of the first arc formed by the first retaining edge 339 measured relative to a center point G1 that is longitudinally offset from the center point G2. Thus, the opening 337 has an irregular shape that includes two retaining edges 339, 343 that are not a continuous circle. The irregular shape of the opening 337 allows the flange F of the container C to be inserted into the opening 337 adjacent the second retaining edge 343 having the radius of curvature R2 and move toward the first retaining edge 339 to lock, e.g., compressively engage, the container C into engagement with the central panel 317.
[0047] In this regard, opening 337 may be characterized as a “keyhole” opening because the portion of opening 337 adjacent second retention edge 343 is slightly larger to accommodate more of circular flange F of container C to facilitate initial insertion along opening 337.
[0048] In the illustrated embodiment, the blank 313 includes respective first and second retention flaps 319, 323 (broadly, respective "second attachment features") having an opening 351 that is identical in shape to the opening 337 of the central panel 317 in that the openings 351 have third and fourth retention features including a first curved retention edge 353 that corresponds to the first retention edge 339 of the opening 337 and a second curved retention edge 357 that corresponds to the second retention edge 343 of the opening 337. The third and fourth retention features of each retention flap 319, 323 include a first uninterrupted peripheral portion that extends horizontally away from the respective retention edges 353, 357 of each opening 351. 342 and a second uninterrupted peripheral portion 340. In one embodiment, one or both of the first and second holding flaps 319, 323 can be foldably connected to the central panel 317 at a respective fold line, e.g., a transverse fold line.
[0049] The carrier 305 / package 306 is the carrier 105 / package 106 and formed from blank 313 in a manner similar to that described above with respect to carrier 205 / package 206, e.g., with retention flaps 319, 323 in overlapping, face-to-face contact with one another and with central panel 317 such that top portions T of each container C are at least partially received in respective openings 337 in central panel 317. In this regard, top portions T of each container C are at least partially received through respective overlapping openings 337, 351. In one embodiment, retention flaps 319, 323 can be positioned to overlap central panel 317 and not overlap one another.
[0050] 16, a top view of a portion of the assembled carrier 305 is shown diagrammatically with the opening 351 in the retention flap 323 overlapping with the opening 337 in the central panel 317, which together provide the "keyhole opening" mentioned above. As shown, when the openings 351, 337 are aligned, the retention flap 323 A passageway for at least partially receiving the container C is provided between a first retention edge 353 of the opening 351 in the first retention flap 319 and a first retention edge 339 of the opening 337 in the lower positioned central panel 317, each of the first retention edges 353, 339 having a relatively small radius of curvature R1 such that a neck portion N of the container C below the flange F is compressed and received between the first retention edges 353, 339 to secure the container C to the carrier 305. It will be appreciated that the container C can be secured to the carrier 305 at the opening 351 in the first retention flap 319 that overlaps the opening 337 in the central panel 317 in a similar manner.
[0051] It will be further appreciated that one or both of the openings 37, 151 described with respect to the carrier 5 / package 6, carrier 105 / package 106 and carrier 205 / package 206 may have the "keyhole opening" configuration described above.
[0052] Features of the blank 313 may be of other shapes, arrangements, configurations, and / or omitted without departing from this disclosure. For example, the relief cut 358 and relief aperture 360 shown on the blank 313 may be configured differently or one or more of such features may be omitted without departing from this disclosure. In further embodiments, the blank 313 may have a panel or flap that extends downwardly along the side of the container C to provide a side panel or billboard for display of information, as described further herein. Also, in further embodiments, the opening 351 in the retention flaps 319, 323 may be removed such that the two retention flaps 319, 323 overlap the top of the container C to provide a substantially continuous, e.g., clean, flat, top surface of the carrier 305 / package 306.
[0053] 17 illustrates a first side 411 of a blank 413 forming a carrier 405 and a package 406 (FIG. 20) including the carrier 405 and one or more containers C according to a fifth exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure. The blank 413 and carrier 405 can have one or more features that are substantially similar or the same as those disclosed above with respect to blank 13 / carrier 5, blank 113 / carrier 105, blank 213 / carrier 205 and blank 313 / carrier 305, with similar or like features being indicated with similar or like reference numerals.
[0054] As shown, the blank 413 has a longitudinal axis L1 and a transverse axis L2 and includes a central panel 17, a retention panel 423 foldably connected to the central panel 17 at a transverse fold line 420, and a retention flap 119 foldably connected to the central panel 17 at a transverse fold line 121. The blank 413 further includes a handle panel or top panel 462 foldably connected to the retention panel 423 at a transverse fold line 464, and a side panel or billboard 466 foldably connected to the top panel 462 at a transverse fold line 468.
[0055] The retention panel 423 can have attachment features (broadly, respective "second attachment features") in the form of three openings 451 that are shaped similarly to the openings 37 in the central panel 17. The openings 451 include retention features, including a third retention feature including a respective first curved retention edge 453 extending along a first uninterrupted marginal portion 436 of the retention panel 423 and between two flexible features to define a first portion of the opening 451, and a fourth retention feature including a second curved retention edge 457 along a second uninterrupted marginal portion 438 extending between the flexible features and defining a second portion of the opening 451. As discussed above with respect to retention tabs 45, retention tabs can be defined between the flexible features along a portion of the uninterrupted marginal portion 438.
[0056] The flexible features are part of the mounting feature of the blank 413 and may be cutouts 455 including respective weakened areas extending inwardly from the retention edges 453, 457 as shown (broadly, the respective "first flexible feature" and "second flexible feature"), or may have different configurations as described above.
[0057] Each of the retention panel 423 and the top panel 462 can include a pair of spaced apart handle flaps 471 foldably connected thereto at respective longitudinal fold lines 472. The handle flaps 471 can be aligned with each other and with the handle opening 71 in the center panel 17 and the handle openings 173, 175 in the retention flap 119 when the carrier 405 is formed to provide a handle 409 on the carrier 405 / package 406 as described herein.
[0058] 18 and 19, the blank 413 can be placed over the containers C such that the retention edges 39, 43 are positioned below or in contact with the bottom surface of the flange F of the containers C. The retention flap 119 can then be folded in the direction of arrow A5 at the fold line 121 such that the opening 151 of the first retention flap 119 is positioned above three containers C in one row of containers C, whereupon the first retention flap 119 is pressed into face-to-face contact with the central panel 17 such that the surface of the first retention flap 119 is below or in contact with the bottom surface of the flange F of the containers C. Additionally, each curved notch 161 defined along the free edge of the retention flap 119 can also abut and / or at least partially engage with the bottom surface of the flange F of each container C in the first row of containers C. This additional layer of material provided by a portion of each retention flap 119 may enhance engagement of the carrier 405 with the container C.
[0059] Next, the retaining panel 423 is folded along the fold lines. 420 2, in the direction of arrow A6, the central panel 17 and the retention flap 18 are folded. 119 437, such that the retention edges 453, 437 are positioned below or in contact with the bottom surface of the flange F of the container C. Such an arrangement is shown in FIG.
[0060] 19 and 20, top panel 462 may then be folded in the direction of arrow A7 at fold line 464 into at least partial face-to-face contact with retention panel 423, and advertising board 466 may be further folded downwardly at fold line 468 into a generally perpendicular arrangement relative to top panel 462. In such an arrangement, advertising board 466 may provide a surface on which printed indicia, such as product advertisements, labels, promotional information, and the like, may be readily viewed by customers browsing the retail space.
[0061] In this regard, the top panel 462 covers the lower handle openings 71, 173, 175 to provide a top panel of the carrier 405 / package 406 that is substantially continuous or uninterrupted as the handle flap 471 thereon is disposed in a generally flush arrangement with the remainder of the top panel 462. Thus, the top panel 462 presents a generally flat and smooth surface, e.g., a "clean" surface that may be attractive to customers browsing in a retail space.
[0062] As described above, the handle 409 includes respective overlapping handle flaps 471 and a retaining flap 472. 119 17 and handle opening 71 in central panel 17. In this regard, a user or customer can separate handle flap 471 from respective top panel 462 and retention panel 423 and fold handle flap 471 downwardly at respective fold lines 472 toward handle openings 71, 173, 175 to provide an access path through which one or more of the user's or customer's fingers can grasp a portion of carrier 405 / package 406 to move or transport carrier 405 / package 406.
[0063] 22, an alternative embodiment of blank 413 is shown generally at 513. Blank 513 includes center panel 17, retention flap 119, and retention panel 523 including a first row of openings 451, as shown. Instead of a second row of openings 451, retention panel 523 includes a transverse line of weakness 559 that includes a set of transversely spaced cuts 560 that can define respective notches along retention panel 523 when carrier 505 / package 506 is formed from blank 513.
[0064] Blank 513 can be formed into carrier 505 and package 506 including carrier 505 and one or more containers C in a manner substantially similar to that described above with respect to carrier 405 / package 406. A side view of carrier 505 / package 506 is shown in FIG. 23, where top panel 462 presents a "clean" top of carrier 505 / package 506 and advertising board 466 presents a readily visible surface for visual indicia as described above.
[0065] Referring to FIG. 24, a liner 606 is shown for use with any of the preceding carriers / packages. As described herein, the liner 606 can be provided as a sanitary barrier over the top T of the containers C within the package, e.g., to provide a clean feeling to the customer. In one embodiment, the liner 606 can be a flexible material, such as paper, a polymer sheet, or another suitable material. As shown, the liner 606 can have perforations or cuts 608 that aid in applying the liner 606 over the top portion T and flange F of the containers C. The perforations 608 allow the liner 606 to flex and fit snugly around the flange F of each container C, such that the perforations 608 can expand as the package is formed. Additionally, the liner 606 can include an arcuate cut 609 positioned to align with a handle feature of the carrier / package, e.g., so that the liner 606 does not impede a user or customer from holding the carrier / package. The liner 606 may have other shapes, configurations and / or configurations to have other functions without departing from this disclosure.
[0066] In one embodiment, multiple separate packages may be formed with respective liners 606, which may be separated or cut from an overlying sheet of a continuous carrier being transported, for example, along a conveyor or other assembly system.
[0067] 25, a package 600 is shown in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown, the package 600 includes the carrier 105 described above with a liner 606 that overlies the top T of each container C. In one embodiment, the liner 606 may include, for example, a retention flap. 119、123 The liner 606 may be positioned in an overlapping arrangement with the central panel 17 before being folded downwardly. In this regard, the liner 606 may be positioned to cover the portion of the container C contained therein and exposed through the opening 37 in the central panel 17, and may further extend upwardly through the opening 151 in the holding flaps 119, 123, for example, to be visible to a customer. In another embodiment, the liner 606 may be positioned in a different arrangement relative to the carrier 105 / container C, for example, above the container C and below the central panel 17.
[0068] As mentioned above, a liner 606 can be provided with the different carriers described herein to provide the package with the advantageous hygienic properties discussed above.
[0069] Blanks according to the present disclosure can be formed, for example, from coated cardboard and similar materials. For example, the interior and / or exterior surfaces of the blank can be coated with a clay coating. Product, advertising, price codes, and other information or images can then be printed on the clay coating. The blank can then be coated with a varnish to protect any information printed on the blank. The blank can also be coated, for example, with a moisture barrier layer, on one or both sides of the blank. In accordance with the above-described embodiments, the blank can be constructed of cardboard having a thickness such that it is heavier and harder than regular paper. The blank can also be constructed of other materials, such as cardboard, stiffened paper, or any other material having suitable properties to enable the carton to function at least generally as described hereinabove. The blank can also be laminated or coated with one or more sheet-like materials on selected panels or panel sections.
[0070] In accordance with the above embodiments, the fold lines can be any substantially linear, though not necessarily straight, form of weakening that facilitates folding therealong. In more detail, and not to narrow the scope of the present disclosure, fold lines include score lines, such as lines formed with a blunt scoring knife or the like that create a crushed portion in the material along the desired line of weakness, cuts partially into the material along the desired line of weakness, and / or a series of cuts partially into and / or completely through the material along the desired line of weakness, and various combinations of these features.
[0071] As an example, the tear line can include a slit partially cut into the material along the desired line of weakness, and / or a series of spaced slits that are partially cut into and / or completely through the material along the desired line of weakness, or various combinations of these features. As a more specific example, one type of tear line is in the form of a series of spaced slits that are completely through the material, with adjacent slits spaced slightly apart such that a nick (e.g., a small piece of material somewhat like a bridge) is defined between them to sandwich the tear line and usually temporarily connect the material. The nicks are broken along the tear line during tearing. Nicks usually make up a relatively small percentage of the tear line, and alternatively, the nicks can be omitted from the tear line or broken on the tear line so that the tear line is a continuous break line. That is, it is within the scope of this disclosure to replace each of the tear lines with a continuous slit, etc. For example, the break lines can be continuous slits or wider than the slits without departing from this disclosure.
[0072] The above embodiments can be described as having one or more panels that are adhered together by glue during assembly of the carton embodiment. The term "glue" is intended to encompass all manner of adhesives commonly used to secure carton panels in place.
[0073] The foregoing description illustrates and describes various exemplary embodiments. Various additions, modifications, alterations, etc. may be made to the exemplary embodiments without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure. It is intended that all matters contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. Furthermore, the present disclosure illustrates and describes only selected embodiments of the present disclosure, but the present disclosure can be used in various other combinations, modifications, and environments, and can make modifications or alterations within the scope of the inventive concepts as described herein, modifications or alterations equivalent to the present disclosure, and / or modifications or alterations within the skill or knowledge of the relevant art. Furthermore, certain features and characteristics of each embodiment can be selectively interchanged and applied to other described and undescribed embodiments of the present disclosure.
