Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates generally to an antenna device used in a cellular communication system, and more particularly to a method for separating polarized beams in time and space and correcting channel non-reciprocity caused by the polarization separation, and an antenna device using the same. [Background technology]

[0002] The material described in this section is merely provided as background information for the present invention and may not constitute prior art.

[0003] Since the commercialization of 4G (fourth generation) communication systems, efforts have been made to develop improved 5G (fifth generation) or pre-5G communication systems to meet the increasing demand for wireless data traffic.

[0004] For this reason, 5G communication systems or pre-5G communication systems are also called Beyond 4G Network communication systems or Post LTE (Long Term Evolution) systems.

[0005] In order to achieve high data transmission rates, the 5G communication system is being considered for implementation in ultra-high frequency (mmWave) bands (e.g., 60 GHz band). In order to mitigate the path loss of radio waves in the ultra-high frequency bands and increase the transmission distance of radio waves, beamforming, massive MIMO, full dimensional MIMO (FD-MIMO), array antenna, and large scale antenna technologies are being discussed for the 5G communication system.

[0006] Furthermore, to improve the system's network, technological developments are being carried out in the 5G communication system, such as advanced small cell, cloud radio access network (cloud RAN), ultra-dense network, Device to Device communication (D2D), wireless backhaul, moving network, cooperative communication, CoMP (Coordinated Multi-Points), and receive interference cancellation.

[0007] In addition, the 5G system includes advanced coding modulation (ACM) methods such as FQAM (Hybrid Frequency Shift Keying and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) and SWSC (Sliding Window Superposition Coding), as well as advanced connection technologies such as FBMC (Filter Bank Multi Carrier), NOMA (Non Orthogonal Multiple Access), and SCMA (Sparse Code Multiple Access).

[0008] 5G communication systems are operated using beamforming techniques to increase signal gain in order to overcome the problem of path loss due to the characteristics of ultra-high frequency bands (e.g., mmWave). Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0009] One aspect of the present invention provides a method for separating polarized beams in time and space using two different orthogonal polarizations while correcting channel non-reciprocity caused by the polarization separation, and a multi-beam antenna device using the same. [Means for solving the problem]

[0010] According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method performed by a multi-beam antenna apparatus utilizing two orthogonal polarizations, the multi-beam antenna apparatus comprising an array antenna including transmitting antenna elements used to form a plurality of transmitting beams and receiving antenna elements used to form a plurality of receiving beams.

[0011] The method includes the steps of generating a plurality of transmit polarization components from a transmit signal corresponding to a pair of transmit channels associated with each transmit beam, and outputting, among the plurality of transmit polarization components, a pair of transmit polarization components corresponding to a first orthogonal polarization or a pair of transmit polarization components corresponding to a second orthogonal polarization to a pair of transmit channels associated with each transmit beam such that spatially adjacent transmit beams have different orthogonal polarizations from each other.

[0012] In one embodiment, the method further includes generating a plurality of reception polarization components from reception signals corresponding to a pair of reception channels associated with each reception beam to correct channel non-reciprocity, and outputting a pair of reception polarization components corresponding to orthogonal polarizations of a transmission beam formed in the same spatial direction among the plurality of reception polarization components for the pair of reception channels associated with each reception beam. Alternatively, the method further includes generating a polarization-converted signal corresponding to orthogonal polarizations of a transmission beam formed in the same spatial direction as each reception beam from reception signals corresponding to a pair of reception channels associated with each reception beam to correct channel non-reciprocity.

[0013] According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a multiple beam antenna device using two orthogonal polarizations, the antenna device including an array antenna including transmitting antenna elements used to form a plurality of transmitting beams and receiving antenna elements used to form a plurality of receiving beams, a transmitting polarization combiner for generating a plurality of transmitting polarization components from transmitting signals corresponding to a pair of transmitting channels associated with each transmitting beam, and a transmitting polarization allocation unit for outputting a pair of transmitting polarization components corresponding to a first orthogonal polarization or a pair of transmitting polarization components corresponding to a second orthogonal polarization among the plurality of transmitting polarization components, for a pair of transmitting channels associated with each transmitting beam, such that spatially adjacent transmitting beams have different orthogonal polarizations.

[0014] In one embodiment, the antenna device further includes a reception polarization synthesizer for generating a plurality of reception polarization components from reception signals corresponding to a pair of reception channels associated with each reception beam in order to correct channel non-reciprocity, and a reception polarization allocation unit for outputting a pair of reception polarization components corresponding to orthogonal polarizations of transmission beams formed in the same spatial direction among the plurality of reception polarization components for a pair of reception channels associated with each reception beam. Alternatively, the antenna device further includes a polarization converter for generating a polarization-converted signal corresponding to orthogonal polarizations of transmission beams formed in the same spatial direction as each reception beam from reception signals corresponding to a pair of reception channels associated with each reception beam. Effect of the Invention

[0015] As described above, by adopting an array antenna including a transmitting antenna element and a receiving antenna element, the antenna device according to the present invention does not require switching operations that may deteriorate signal loss and NF (noise figure) when implementing TDD (Time Division Duplexing).

[0016] Furthermore, the antenna device according to the present invention can separate multiple beams in various directions in space, thereby expanding cell coverage, and can reduce correlation between beams through polarization separation of multiple beams (i.e., spatial polarization separation), thereby further improving communication quality.

[0017] Furthermore, the antenna device according to the present invention can correct channel non-reciprocity between the uplink channel and the downlink channel caused by spatial and temporal polarization separation by performing polarization conversion on the received signal input from the receiving antenna element, or by performing polarization composition and polarization assignment. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0019] Hereinafter, some embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. When referring to components in each drawing, it should be noted that the same components are given the same reference numerals as much as possible even if they are displayed in different drawings. In addition, when describing the present invention, if a detailed description of related known configurations or functions is considered to make the gist of the present invention unclear, the detailed description will be omitted.

[0020] In addition, terms such as 1st, 2nd, A, B, (a), (b) may be used to describe components of the present invention. These terms are used to distinguish the components from other components, and do not limit the nature, order, or sequence of the components. Throughout this specification, when a part "includes" or "has" a certain component, this does not mean that other components are excluded, but that other components may be further included, unless otherwise specified. Furthermore, terms such as "part" and "module" used in this specification refer to a unit that processes at least one function or operation, and are embodied in hardware, software, or a combination of hardware and software. FIG. 1 is a conceptual diagram for explaining the problem of NF degradation occurring in a conventional antenna device.

[0021] The conventional antenna device operating in the TDD mode shown in FIG. 1 is configured to include an antenna (ANT), a filter, a switch (S / W), a PA, an LNA, an AD converter (not shown), and a digital signal processor (implemented by an FPGA) (not shown).

[0022] The antenna ANT has a form in which a plurality of antenna modules are arranged in an array, and each antenna module is a dual polarized antenna module composed of two radiators having mutually perpendicular geometric orientations (i.e., having mutually orthogonal polarization characteristics). The antenna module performs a signal transmission function when the switch (S / W) is connected to a transmission line (Tx line), and performs a signal reception function when the switch (S / W) is connected to a reception line (Rx line). Therefore, the antenna device of FIG. 1 realizes a TDD function by selective switching operation of the switch (S / W).

[0023] This switching operation may cause signal loss in the transmission or reception signal, and may also cause signal loss when the reception signal is transmitted to the next stage in the device through the cable. Such signal loss may cause a deterioration in the Noise Figure (NF) and may cause a problem of limiting the uplink coverage expansion of the wireless communication system.

[0024] The multi-beam antenna device of the present invention employs an array antenna consisting of an antenna module having a pair of dual polarized antenna elements, one of which is used to transmit radio signals and the other dual polarized antenna element is used to receive radio signals, and therefore does not require switching operations that may cause signal loss and deteriorate the noise figure when implementing TDD.

[0025] Furthermore, the multiple beam antenna device according to the present invention can spatially separate two kinds of orthogonal polarizations by allocating two kinds of orthogonal polarizations to transmission channels so that spatially adjacent transmission beams have different orthogonal polarizations.

[0026] 2a to 2d are block diagrams that generally illustrate example configurations of multiple beam antenna devices capable of implementing the techniques of the present disclosure.

[0027] The multiple beam antenna device 10 may be an M×N multiple input / output (MIMO) antenna. Therefore, the antenna device 10 has M transmit channels and M receive channels. The antenna device 10 includes a digital processing unit 110, an RF processing unit 120, and an array antenna 130.

[0028] 2a and 2b, the digital processing unit 110 is configured to include a fronthaul interface 1110, a multiple beam forming unit 1120, a polarization combining unit 1130, a polarization assignment unit 1140, a size / phase correction unit 1150, and a polarization conversion unit 1160. Alternatively, as illustrated in Fig. 2c and 2d, the digital processing unit 110 may be configured to include a polarization combining unit 1170 and a polarization assignment unit 1180 instead of the polarization conversion unit 1160.

[0029] The RF processing unit 120 is configured to include a plurality of transmit radio frequency chains (RF chains) 1210, 1210-1 to 1210-M, and a plurality of receive RF chains 1220, 1220-1 to 1220-M.

[0030] It should be understood that the configurations of the antenna device 10 in Figures 2a-2d are exemplary configurations depicted for clarity only. In other embodiments, any other suitable components of the antenna device 10 may be further used. Each component of such an antenna device 10 is typically implemented using dedicated hardware, for example using one or more application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs), and / or field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Alternatively, some components are implemented using software running on programmable hardware, or using a combination of hardware and software.

[0031] The array antenna 130 may include a plurality of array elements or antenna elements arranged in a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns. In some embodiments, each array element may be a dual polarized antenna element having dual polarization characteristics. Each of the plurality of array elements is divided into a transmit antenna element and a receive antenna element. The transmit antenna element is used for transmitting signals, and the receive antenna element is used for receiving signals. The orthogonal polarization characteristics of the transmit antenna element and the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the receive antenna element may be the same or different from each other. In some other embodiments, each array element may be a quadruple polarized antenna element having quadruple polarization characteristics. The polarization characteristics and structure of the array elements are described below with reference to FIGS. 3a to 3d.

[0032] The antenna device 10 can realize polarization diversity by using the orthogonal polarization characteristics provided by the array antenna 130. The antenna device 10 can assign dual orthogonal polarizations to two transmission channels (or transmission signals) associated with each transmission beam. The orthogonal polarizations assigned to the transmission channels may be the same as or different from the dual orthogonal polarization characteristics of the transmission antenna elements included in the array antenna 130.

[0033] The antenna device 10 can generate a transmitting beam having an orthogonal polarization different from the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the transmitting antenna element through polarization synthesis, and can form a receiving beam corresponding to an orthogonal polarization different from the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the receiving antenna element through polarization synthesis of the received signal (i.e., it can generate signal components corresponding to orthogonal polarizations different from the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the receiving antenna element).

[0034] The antenna device 10 can spatially separate the two orthogonal polarizations by assigning the two orthogonal polarizations to the transmission channels such that spatially adjacent beams have different orthogonal polarizations.

[0035] The following explanation is based on the assumption that the two types of orthogonal polarizations are orthogonal polarizations consisting of ±45 degree linear polarization and orthogonal polarizations consisting of horizontal / vertical (V / H) linear polarization, but the technology disclosed herein is also applicable to a combination of such orthogonal linear polarization and orthogonal circular polarization consisting of left-handed and right-handed circular polarization.

[0036] In the following description, the polarization combining unit 1130 and the polarization allocation unit 1140 located on the transmission path are also referred to as the transmission polarization combining unit 1130 and the transmission polarization allocation unit 1140, respectively, and the polarization combining unit 1170 and the polarization allocation unit 1180 located on the reception path are also referred to as the reception polarization combining unit 1170 and the reception polarization allocation unit 1180, respectively.

[0037] Transmit Signal Processing The transmission signals of the M transmission channels are radiated in the form of beams via the array antenna 130 through a transmission path consisting of a multiple beam forming unit 1120, a polarization combining unit 1130, a polarization allocation unit 1140, a size / phase correction unit 1150, and transmission RF chains 1210-1 to 1210-M. Each of the transmission channels has a corresponding transmission path. Here, the transmission signal may also be called a downlink signal. The transmission path refers to the path along which the transmission signal travels within the antenna device 10. Therefore, the transmission path may also be called "the path along which the transmission signal travels" or "the path along which the transmission signal is processed."

[0038] First, a transmission signal input via the fronthaul interface 1110 is input to the polarization combiner 1130 and undergoes a polarization combining process. The polarization combiner 1130 can combine four polarization components for each pair of transmission signals radiated via a transmitting antenna element (to be described later) and output them to the polarization allocation unit 1140. The polarization components output from the polarization combiner 1130 are sometimes called "polarized signals." It should be noted that the polarization components combined in the polarization combiner 1130 are fed to the array antenna 130 via subsequent components and radiated into free space, thereby substantially performing polarization combining.

[0039] The polarization allocation unit 1140 can determine orthogonal polarizations to be assigned to two transmission channels (or two transmission signals) associated with each transmission beam so that spatially adjacent transmission beams have different orthogonal polarizations. The polarization allocation unit 1140 can output a part of the four polarization components combined by the polarization combining unit 1130 to two transmission paths corresponding to the determined orthogonal polarizations. The polarization components output to each transmission path may be referred to as "polarized components (polarized signals) of transmission signals," "polarized components (polarized signals) of transmission channels," or "transmission polarization components (transmission polarization signals)." The orthogonal polarizations of the transmission beams are determined according to the polarization components output from the polarization allocation unit 1140 and the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the transmission antenna elements. The polarization combining and the polarization combining occurring in the transmission antenna elements due to the polarization allocation will be described later with reference to FIG. 4.

[0040] To compensate for deviations in amplitude and phase characteristics between the transmit RF chains 1210-1 to 1210-M, the polarization components of each transmit signal are input to an amplitude / phase correction unit 1150 before reaching the transmit RF chains 1210-1 to 1210-M. The amplitude and phase characteristics of the RF transmit path relate to the amplitude and phase changes that an RF signal undergoes as it travels through an RF transmit path provided by the transmit RF chain.

[0041] The size and phase correction unit 1150 performs a function of compensating for deviations in amplitude and phase characteristics between the transmit RF chains 1210-1 to 1210-M. Since deviations in amplitude characteristics have little effect on beamforming, it is common to calibrate only the phase for all paths in the same manner. However, since the accuracy of the polarization combining generated in the antenna array 130 according to the present invention is largely dependent on the amplitude and phase of the combined radio signal, such correction of the amplitude and phase increases the accuracy of the polarization combining.

[0042] The polarization components of the transmit signal that have undergone the size and phase correction process may be converted to analog signals and subjected to RF signal processing in the transmit RF chain 1210. The transmit RF chain 1210 is configured to include a digital to analog converter (DAC), a filter, a mixer for frequency up-conversion, a power amplifier (PA), and the like.

[0043] The transmit signal that has been RF signal processed and converted to analog in the transmit RF chain 1210 is radiated in the form of a beam via the array antenna 130 .

[0044] The multiple beam former 1120 can precode a transmission signal so that multiple beams are formed in the array antenna 130. The position of the multiple beam former 1120 on the transmission path of the antenna device 10 changes depending on whether a weight vector (or a precoding matrix) is used in the baseband or in the RF band.

[0045] First, as in the example of Fig. 2a or 2c, the multiple beam former 1122 may be located prior to the transmission polarization combiner 1130 in the signal transmission path. The multiple beam former 1122 performs digital beamforming. In this case, a (baseband) digital transmission signal is converted into a plurality of precoded signals by applying a weight vector or a precoding matrix in the multiple beam former 1122.

[0046] The digital transmission signal is branched into a plurality of signals having different phases and amplitudes according to the applied weight vectors. Furthermore, the branched signals are radiated in the form of a beam by constructively interfering with each other at a specific angle or direction (a direction in which communication resources are to be concentrated) via the array antenna 130. Therefore, the direction and shape of the beam are determined according to the value of the weight vector applied to the digital transmission signal.

[0047] Next, as in the example of FIG. 2b or 2d, the multiple beam former 1124 is disposed after the transmit RF chain 1210 in the signal transmission process. Therefore, the multiple beam former 1124 can perform analog beamforming. In this case, the multiple beam former 1124 can branch an analog signal received from each transmit RF chain 1210 into a plurality of paths and adjust the phase and amplitude of each of the branched signals. The beam former 1124 is configured to include a number of phase shifters that adjust the phase of each of the branched signals and a number of power amplifiers that adjust the amplitude of each of the branched signals. That is, the phase shifters and the power amplifiers process the weight vector in the analog domain. The analog signals whose phases and amplitudes have been adjusted are radiated in the form of a beam by constructively interfering at a specific angle or direction via the array antenna 130. Here, the transmit RF chain 1210 may be removed from the antenna apparatus 10, as its function may also be performed by the multiple beam former 1224 that is substantially composed of analog components.

[0048] Received signal processing After being received via the array antenna 130, the received signals (or uplink signals) corresponding to the M number of receive channels are processed via a receive path consisting of a receive RF chain 1220, a size / phase correction unit 1150, a polarization conversion unit 1160 (alternatively, a receive polarization synthesis unit 1170, a receive polarization allocation unit 1180) and a multiple beam forming unit 1120. Each receive channel has a corresponding receive path. Here, the received signal is also called an uplink signal. The receive path refers to the path along which the received signal travels within the antenna device 10. Therefore, the receive path may also be referred to as the "path along which the received signal travels" or the "path along which the received signal is processed."

[0049] Analog received signals received via the array antenna 130 are RF-processed in the corresponding receive RF chains 1220-1 to 1220-M. Each receive RF chain 1220 is configured to include an ADC (analog to digital converter), a filter, a mixer for down-conversion of frequency, a low noise amplifier (LNA), and the like.

[0050] The received signal converted into a digital signal through the receiving RF chain 1220 undergoes a process of correcting deviations in magnitude and phase characteristics between the receiving RF chains 1220-1 to 1220-M in the magnitude / phase correcting unit 1150.

[0051] For transmit and receive beams formed toward the same spatial direction, the orthogonal polarization of the transmit beam (changed by the orthogonal polarization allocation of the transmit polarization allocation unit 1140) may be the same as or different from the orthogonal polarization of the received signal (defined by the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the receive antenna elements). As will be described later, if the orthogonal polarization of the transmit beam is different from the orthogonal polarization of the received signal, the wireless channel characteristics will be different between the uplink and downlink, which will result in the downlink / uplink channel reciprocity not being established.

[0052] 2a and 2b, the antenna device 10 includes a polarization converter 1160 that corrects channel irreversibility using polarization conversion. The polarization converter 1160 performs polarization conversion on the received signal output from the size and phase corrector 1150, and outputs a polarization-converted signal having the same orthogonal polarization as the orthogonal polarization of the transmission beam.

[0053] For example, when the transmission beam has orthogonal polarization of ±45 degrees and the receiving antenna element has V / H orthogonal polarization characteristics, the polarization conversion unit 1160 can perform polarization conversion on the V / H polarized received signal and output a polarization-converted signal having the same orthogonal polarization (±45 degrees) as the orthogonal polarization of the transmission beam. As another example, when the transmission beam has V / H orthogonal polarization and the receiving antenna element has V / H orthogonal polarization characteristics, the orthogonal polarization of the transmission beam and the orthogonal polarization of the received signal are the same, so the polarization conversion unit 1160 may not perform polarization conversion on the received signal.

[0054] Alternatively, as illustrated in FIGS. 2c and 2d, the antenna device 10 includes a polarization combining unit 1170 and a polarization allocation unit 1180 that utilizes polarization combining and polarization allocation to compensate for channel nonreciprocity.

[0055] The polarization combiner 1170 can combine four polarization components for each pair of received signals received via each receiving antenna element, and output these to the polarization allocation unit 1180. The polarization components output from the polarization combiner 1170 are sometimes referred to as "polarized signals."

[0056] The polarization allocation unit 1180 determines orthogonal polarizations to be assigned to two receive channels (or two receive signals) associated with each receive antenna element. The polarization allocation unit 1180 assigns the same orthogonal polarizations to the two receive channels as the orthogonal polarizations set for the two corresponding transmit channels (or the orthogonal polarizations of the transmit beams).

[0057] The polarization allocation unit 1180 corresponds to the determined orthogonal polarization and can output two polarization components out of the four polarization components combined by the polarization combiner 1170 to be transmitted to a DU (digital unit) via the fronthaul interface 1110. The polarization components assigned to each reception channel are referred to as "reception channel polarization components (polarized signals)" or "reception signal polarization components (polarized signals)" or "reception polarization components (reception polarized signals)."

[0058] For example, when ±45 degree orthogonal polarization is set for two transmission channels (thus, the transmission beam has ±45 degree orthogonal polarization) and the receiving antenna element has V / H orthogonal polarization characteristics, the polarization allocation unit 1180 outputs two polarization components corresponding to ±45 degree orthogonal polarization among the four polarization components combined by the polarization combining unit 1170. As another example, when V / H orthogonal polarization is set for two transmission channels (thus, the transmission beam has V / H orthogonal polarization) and the receiving antenna element has V / H orthogonal polarization characteristics, the polarization allocation unit 1180 outputs two polarization components corresponding to V / H orthogonal polarization among the four polarization components combined by the polarization combining unit 1170.

[0059] A detailed description of the channel non-reciprocity and the operation of the polarization converter 1160 to correct this, as well as the operations of the polarization combiner 1170 and the polarization allocation unit 1180, will be given later with reference to Figures 9, 10a, 10b, 11a and 11b.

[0060] The received signal may include a plurality of signals with different phases and amplitudes corresponding to the associated receiving antenna elements. The multiple beam former 1120 may adjust the phases and amplitudes of the plurality of signals and then add the adjusted signals to generate or restore the received signal. This process may be understood as the reverse of the process in which the multiple beam former 1120 forms a plurality of signals with different phases and amplitudes from the transmitted signal. For this purpose, as shown in Figs. 2a and 2c, the multiple beam former 1122 may be located after the polarization combiner 1160 and the receiving polarization assigner 1180 in the receiving path to perform digital beamforming, or as shown in Figs. 2b and 2d, the multiple beam former 1122 may be located between the array antenna 130 and the receiving RF chain 1220 in the receiving path to perform analog beamforming. In Fig. 2b, the receiving RF chain 1220 may be removed from the antenna device 10, with its function also being performed by the multiple beam former 1224 substantially composed of analog components.

[0061] DU and RU On the other hand, in a so-called "standalone base station," the signal processing functions corresponding to the digital unit (DU) and radio unit (RU) are included in one physical system, and the one physical system is installed in the service area. In contrast, in the Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) architecture, the DU and RU are physically separated, and only the RU is installed in the service area, and a BBU pool, which is a centralized DU, has the control and management function for multiple RUs that form each independent cell.

[0062] The DU is responsible for digital signal processing and resource management control functions, and is connected to the core network via the backhaul. The RU is responsible for radio signal processing functions, converting digital signals received from the DU into radio frequency signals according to the frequency band, amplifying them, and converting RF signals received by the antenna into digital signals to transmit to the DU.

[0063] The antenna device 10 may be installed in a standalone base station in which the DU and RU are included in one physical system, or in an RU in a C-RAN structure in which the DU and RU are physically separated. The following description focuses on an example in which the antenna device 10 is installed in an RU in a C-RAN structure.

[0064] The baseband signal is a signal that has undergone baseband processing such as a scrambling process, a modulation process, and a layer mapping process. The scrambling process corresponds to a process of encrypting a baseband signal using a scramble signal to distinguish a base station or a terminal. The modulation process corresponds to a process of modulating a scrambled signal into a plurality of modulation symbols. The scrambled signal is input to a modulation mapper (not shown) and is modulated through a binary phase shift keying (BPSK), quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), or 16QAM / 64QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) method according to the type of signal and / or channel condition. The layer mapping process corresponds to a process of mapping a modulation symbol to one or more transmission layers in order to separate signals for each antenna. A process of mapping the modulation symbol to a resource element is further performed on the modulation symbol obtained through the modulation process.

[0065] When the antenna device 10 is installed in a RU of a C-RAN structure, the above process is executed in a centralized DU, whereas when the antenna device 10 is installed in a stand-alone base station, the above process is executed in a DU in the base station.

[0066] Signals or data exchange between the DU and the RU is performed via a fronthaul or a fronthaul link. The fronthaul link is a link connecting the DU and the RU in a cellular radio access network. The fronthaul interface 1110 of the antenna device 10 is implemented to comply with standards such as CPRI (Common Public Radio Interface), eCPRI (enhanced CPRI), ORI (Open Radio Equipment Interface), and OBSAI (Open Base Station Architecture Initiative).

[0067] When the antenna apparatus 10 of the present invention is implemented in an RU, the antenna apparatus 10 is divided into a digital processing unit 110, an RF processing unit 120, and an array antenna 130.

[0068] The RF processing unit 120 is responsible for analog signal processing of the transmit and receive signals. The RF processing unit 120 may be configured to include RF chains 1210 and 1220 as shown in Fig. 2a, or may be configured to include RF chains 1210 and 1220 and a multiple beam forming unit 1124 as shown in Fig. 2b.

[0069] The digital processing unit 110 is responsible for digital signal processing of transmission signals and reception signals. The digital processing unit 110 is implemented as a digital front end (DFE). DFE means that an existing analog function block is replaced with a digital signal processing (DSP) block. When the digital processing unit 110 is implemented as a DFE, it is possible to reduce design time, power consumption, and area, as well as to ensure flexibility in supporting multiple modes and multiple bands.

[0070] The digital processing unit 110 may further perform an inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) operation and an FFT operation on the polarization-converted signal. The digital processing unit 110 may also insert a guard interval to prevent inter-symbol interference (ISI). To this end, the digital processing unit 110 may be configured to further include an IFFT unit (not shown) / FFT unit (not shown) and a cyclic prefix (CP, not shown).

[0071] Antenna elements of an array antenna 3a to 3d are diagrams illustrating various structures and orthogonal polarization characteristics of antenna modules 1310 that can be adopted in the array antenna 130 of the antenna system of the present invention.

[0072] 3a to 3d, the antenna module 1310 is composed of a pair of a transmitting antenna element 1312 corresponding to a transmitting antenna and a receiving antenna element 1314 corresponding to a receiving antenna. The transmitting antenna element 1312 is connected to transmitting lines Tx1 and Tx2 and is used for transmitting signals, and the receiving antenna element 1314 is connected to receiving lines Rx1 and Rx2 and is used for receiving signals.

[0073] The transmitting antenna element 1312 is a dual-polarized antenna element that includes two radiating elements having orthogonal polarization characteristics, and the receiving antenna element 1314 is also a dual-polarized antenna element that includes two radiating elements having orthogonal polarization characteristics.

[0074] The orthogonal polarization characteristics of the transmitting antenna element 1312 and the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the receiving antenna element 1314 may be different (e.g., see (b) and (c) of FIG. 3a). For example, the radiating elements included in the transmitting antenna element 1312 have polarization characteristics of +45 degrees and -45 degrees, respectively, and the radiating elements included in the receiving antenna element 1314 have polarization characteristics of V and H, respectively. As another example, the radiating elements included in the transmitting antenna element 1312 have polarization characteristics of V and H, respectively, and the radiating elements included in the receiving antenna element 1314 have polarization characteristics of +45 degrees and -45 degrees, respectively. That is, the antenna module 1310 can provide two kinds of dual orthogonal polarization characteristics, including dual orthogonal polarizations of the transmitting antenna element 1312 and dual orthogonal polarizations of the receiving antenna element 1314.

[0075] The orthogonal polarization characteristics of the transmitting antenna element 1312 and the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the receiving antenna element 1314 may be the same as each other (see Figures 3a (a) and (d)). In an embodiment in which such an antenna module 1310 is adopted, as described below with reference to Figure 4, depending on the polarization components of the transmission signal transmitted through the transmission lines Tx1 and Tx2, the beam radiated from the transmitting antenna element 1312 has a dual orthogonal polarization direction different from the dual polarization characteristics of the transmitting antenna element 1312. Therefore, even when using the antenna module 1310 illustrated in Figures 3a (a) and (d), the antenna device 10 can use different dual orthogonal polarizations between the transmitting beam and the receiving beam.

[0076] In the antenna module 1310 shown in Fig. 3a, the two radiating elements constituting the transmitting antenna element 1312 are arranged to cross each other at a first intersection, and the radiating elements constituting the receiving antenna element 1314 are arranged to cross each other at a second intersection. The smaller the distance between the first and second intersections, the more efficient the area occupied by the antenna module 1310.

[0077] Referring to Figure 3b, a pair of radiating elements that constitute the receiving antenna element 1314 are either (1) arranged adjacent to the left and upper side of the transmitting antenna element 1312 (see Figure 3b(a)), (2) arranged adjacent to the left and lower side of the transmitting antenna element 1312 (see Figure 3b(b)), (3) arranged adjacent to the right and upper side of the transmitting antenna element 1312 (see Figure 3b(c)), or (4) arranged adjacent to the right and lower side of the transmitting antenna element 1312 (see Figure 3b(d)).

[0078] Referring to Figure 3c, a pair of radiating elements that constitute the transmitting antenna element 1312 are either (1) arranged adjacent to the upper left and lower left sides of the receiving antenna element 1314 (see (a) of Figure 3c), (2) arranged adjacent to the lower left and lower right sides of the receiving antenna element 1314 (see (b) of Figure 3c), (3) arranged adjacent to the upper left and upper right sides of the receiving antenna element 1314 (see (c) of Figure 3c), or (4) arranged adjacent to the upper right and lower right sides of the receiving antenna element 1314 (see (d) of Figure 3c).

[0079] In this manner, the antenna module 1310 shown in Figures 3b and 3c can provide the array antenna 130 with improved area efficiency compared to the antenna module 1310 shown in Figure 3a, since either one of the antenna elements (1312 or 1314) is disposed adjacent to the side of either the other antenna element (1314 or 1312). In addition, the improved area efficiency leads to convenience in manufacturing, installation, maintenance, etc.

[0080] In the antenna module 1310 shown in FIG. 3d, two radiating elements constituting the transmitting antenna element 1312 and a radiating element constituting the receiving antenna element 1314 intersect with each other at one intersection 1316, and therefore the arrangement of FIG. 3d maximizes area efficiency compared to the arrangements of FIGS. 3a to 3c.

[0081] Furthermore, in the above description given with reference to Figures 3a to 3d, it should be understood that the locations of the transmitting antenna elements 1312 and the receiving antenna elements 1314 may be interchangeable.

[0082] Polarization combining and polarization assignment FIG. 4 is a conceptual diagram for explaining polarization combining and polarization assignment performed in association with one transmitting antenna element according to one embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 5 is a conceptual diagram for explaining polarization combining and polarization assignment performed in association with one receiving antenna element according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0083] As described above, the transmission polarization combiner 1130 can combine and output four mutually different polarization components from two transmission signals transmitted via one transmission antenna element 1312.

[0084] 4, the transmission polarization combiner 1130 extracts different polarization components (“S1”, “S2”, “S1+S2”, and “S1+S2e”) from the transmission signals S1 and S2. jπ Here, "S1" and "S2" are used to generate a beam having the same polarization direction as the polarization characteristic of the transmitting antenna element 1312, and "S1+S2" and "S1+S2e" can be combined and output. jπ " is used to generate a beam having a polarization direction different from the polarization characteristics of the transmitting antenna element 1312.

[0085] The composition of the polarization components performed in the transmission polarization combiner 1130 is realized by a matrix operation of Equation 1 below.

[0086]

[0087] In the above equation 1, the matrix represented by equation 2 is a PVCD (polarization vector composition-decomposition) matrix. Here, the third and fourth polarization components ("S1+S2" and "S1+S2e jπ To prevent the power of the PD matrix from increasing, a scale factor is applied to the elements in the third and fourth rows of the PD matrix. The scale factor is expressed as the number 3.

[0088] The transmission polarization allocation unit 1140 can output two polarization components of the transmission signals S1 and S2 output from the transmission polarization synthesis unit 1130 that are radiated via two radiating elements of the transmitting antenna element 1312 to two transmission paths.

[0089] For example, the transmission polarization allocation unit 1140 may allocate four polarization components ("S1", "S2", "S1+S2", "S1+S2e jπ "), (1) output "S1" and "S2" (see (a) of Figure 4), or (2) output "S1+S2" and "S1+S2e jπ " (see Figure 4(b)).

[0090] In accordance with the polarization components output from the transmission polarization allocation unit 1140, the beam radiated from the transmission antenna element 1312 having ±45 degree orthogonal polarization characteristics has ±45 degree orthogonal polarization or V / H orthogonal polarization.

[0091] 4(a), when polarization components "S1" and "S2" are assigned to a transmission channel, the polarization component "S1" radiated through a radiating element having a +45° polarization characteristic forms a beam pattern having a +45° polarization, and the polarization component "S1" radiated through a radiating element having a -45° polarization characteristic forms a beam pattern having a -45° polarization. That is, the transmitting antenna element 1312 having ±45° orthogonal polarization characteristic forms a beam pattern having ±45° orthogonal polarization.

[0092] As shown in Figure 4(b), the polarization components "S1+S2" and "S1+S2e jπ " is assigned to the transmission channel, a beam formed by the polarization component "S1 + S2" radiated through the radiation element with +45° polarization characteristics and a beam formed by the polarization component "S1 + S2e" radiated through the radiation element with -45° polarization characteristics jπ " and the beam formed by " .

[0093] Specifically, in the case of the polarization component "S1", the first beam radiated via the radiating element having a +45° polarization characteristic has a +45° polarization orientation, and the second beam radiated via the radiating element having a -45° polarization characteristic has a -45° polarization orientation, so that the first and second beams are combined to produce a combined beam having a V polarization orientation. In the case of the polarization component "S2", the third beam radiated via the radiating element having a +45° polarization characteristic has a +45° polarization orientation, and the fourth beam radiated via the radiating element having a -45° polarization characteristic has a "-45°+π" polarization orientation, so that the third and fourth beams are combined to produce a combined beam having a V polarization orientation.

[0094] On the other hand, the orthogonal polarization directions of the received signals a, b when the receiving antenna element 1314 receives the radio signals S1, S2 in free space are determined by the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the receiving antenna element 1314. For example, when the dual polarization characteristics of the receiving antenna element 1314 are V / H orthogonal polarization, the received signals have V / H orthogonal polarization.

[0095] Referring to FIG. 5, for radio signals S1 and S2, received signal a captured by a radiating element having V polarization of receiving antenna element 1314 includes an S1 signal component S1(V) of V polarization and an S2 signal component S2(V) of V polarization, and received signal (b) captured by a radiating element having H polarization includes an S1 signal component S1(H) of H polarization and an S2 signal component S2(H) of H polarization.

[0096] As described above, the reception polarization combiner 1170 can combine and output four different polarization components from two reception signals a and b received by one reception antenna element 1314. The polarization component combination performed by the reception polarization combiner 1170 is implemented by a matrix operation of Equation 1.

[0097] As shown in FIG. 5, the reception polarization synthesis unit 1170 extracts different polarization components (“a”, “b”, “a+b”, and “a+be” from the reception signals a and b for the RF signals S1 and S2. jπ Here, "a" and "b" are polarization components having the same polarization direction as the polarization characteristic of the receiving antenna element 1314, and "a+b" and "a+be" can be synthesized and output. jπ " is a polarized component having a polarization direction different from the polarization characteristic of the receiving antenna element 1314.

[0098] Specifically, polarization component “a” has an S1 signal component S1(V) of V polarization and an S2 signal component S2(V) of V polarization, and polarization component “b” has an S1 signal component S1(H) of H polarization and an S2 signal component S2(H) of H polarization.

[0099] In addition, the polarization component "a+b" includes (1) an S1 signal component S1(+45°) of a +45° polarization obtained by combining an S1 signal component S1(V) of a V polarization and an S1 signal component S1(H) of an H polarization, and (2) an S2 signal component S2(+45°) of a +45° polarization obtained by combining an S2 signal component S2(V) of a V polarization and an S2 signal component S2(H) of an H polarization.

[0100] In addition, the polarization components "a+be jπ " has (1) an S1 signal component S1(-45°) of -45° polarization obtained by combining an S1 signal component S1(V) of V polarization and an S1 signal component S1(H+π) of H+π polarization, and (2) an S2 signal component S2(-45°) of -45° polarization obtained by combining an S2 signal component S2(V) of V polarization and an S2 signal component S2(H+π) of H+π polarization.

[0101] The reception polarization allocation unit 1180 can output two of the polarization components of the reception signals a and b output from the reception polarization synthesis unit 1170 to two reception paths. For example, the reception polarization allocation unit 1180 can output four polarization components ("a", "b", "a+b", and "a+be"). jπ "), (1) whether to output "a" and "b" (see (a) of Figure 5), or (2) whether to output "a+b" and "a+be" jπ" (see Figure 5 (b)).

[0102] As shown in (a) of Figure 5, when polarization components "a" and "b" are assigned to a receiving channel, orthogonal polarization signal components "S1(V), S2(V)" and "S1(H), S2(H)", which have the same orthogonal polarization characteristics as the receiving antenna element 1314, are output to the receiving channel in response to RF signals S1 and S1.

[0103] As shown in Figure 5(b), the polarization components "a+b" and "a+be jπ When " is assigned to the receiving channel, for RF signals S1, S1, the combined orthogonal polarization signal components "S1(+45°), S2(+45°)" and "S1(-45°), S2(-45°)", which differ from the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the receiving antenna element 1314, are output to the receiving channel.

[0104] 2a to 2d illustrate the antenna device 10 as including one transmit polarization combining unit 1130 and one transmit polarization allocation unit 1140 that perform integrated polarization combining and polarization allocation for all transmit signals or transmit channels.

[0105] However, in other embodiments, the antenna device 10 may be configured to include multiple transmit polarization combiners and multiple transmit polarization assigners that perform polarization combining and polarization assignment for transmit signals or transmit channels associated with respective transmit beams. Similarly, the antenna device 10 may be configured to include multiple receive polarization combiners and multiple receive polarization assigners. An example of such a configuration is shown in FIG. 6.

[0106] FIG. 6 is a block diagram illustrating an exemplary structure for performing polarization combining and polarization assignment for a transmit signal in an antenna apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0107] 6, the antenna apparatus is configured to include a plurality of polarization combiners 1130-1 to 1130-M, a plurality of polarization allocation units 1140-1 to 1140-M, and a polarization allocation control unit 1142. The polarization allocation control unit 1142 comprehensively manages the polarization allocation of transmission signals executed by the plurality of transmission polarization combiners 1130-1 to 1130-M.

[0108] The polarization allocation control unit 1142 can determine the orthogonal polarization for each of the transmission channels based on the number of beams and the orthogonal polarization of the reference beam. Here, the number of beams means the number of beams generated using the array antenna 130, and the reference beam is any one of the predefined beams among the multiple beams (e.g., a transmission beam associated with a first transmission channel and a second transmission channel among the M transmission channels). The polarization allocation control unit 1142 can determine the orthogonal polarization for each of the transmission channels such that adjacent transmission beams among the multiple transmission beams have different orthogonal polarizations.

[0109] The polarization allocation control unit 1142 can generate an allocation control signal for controlling allocation of orthogonal polarizations to transmission channels. The polarization allocation control unit 1142 can transmit the allocation control signal to the polarization allocation units 1140-1 to 1140-M. Each of the polarization allocation units 1140-1 to 1140-M can output a polarization component corresponding to an orthogonal polarization specified by the allocation control signal, among the four polarization components generated by the corresponding polarization synthesis units 1130-1 to 1130-M.

[0110] The polarized components output by each of the polarization allocation units 1140-1 to 1140-M are supplied to the corresponding transmitting antenna elements 1312 via the subsequent components. The transmitting signals to which the orthogonal polarizations are assigned are radiated in beams in different directions in free space via the transmitting antenna elements 1312. Such spatial polarization separation is in one or more directions of the horizontal direction and the vertical direction.

[0111] FIG. 7 is a conceptual diagram for explaining spatial polarization separation in the horizontal and vertical directions provided by an antenna apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0112] As shown in Fig. 7, the antenna device 10 can form c beams separated in the horizontal direction corresponding to c sectors by using the array antenna 130, and can form d beams separated in the vertical direction for each of the c sectors. That is, the antenna device 10 can provide 3D beamforming. The number of beams spatially separated in the vertical direction for each sector may be the same or different. Therefore, the coverage area of the antenna device 10 is divided into a maximum of c x d sub-sectors.

[0113] Horizontally separated beams have different orthogonal polarizations between adjacent beams (i.e., horizontal spatial polarization separation), and therefore the correlation between horizontally adjacent beams is sufficiently small. Furthermore, in each sector, vertically separated beams have different orthogonal polarizations between adjacent beams (i.e., vertical spatial polarization separation), and therefore the correlation between vertically adjacent beams is sufficiently small. Furthermore, beams having the same orthogonal polarization between adjacent sectors (e.g., the first beam in the first sector and the second beam in the second sector) are sufficiently spaced apart in the horizontal and vertical directions, and therefore the correlation between the two beams is also sufficiently small.

[0114] It should be noted that, in the past, due to the high correlation between the ±45° orthogonal polarization and the H / V orthogonal polarization, no antenna device using these two orthogonal polarizations together has been attempted. The antenna device 10 according to the present invention can improve the correlation between the orthogonal polarizations by allocating different orthogonal polarizations between spatially adjacent beams, and can realize polarization reuse that can fully utilize the efficiency of polarization diversity provided by two orthogonal polarizations (i.e., four different polarizations). The term "polarization reuse" is derived from frequency reuse.

[0115] FIG. 8 is a conceptual diagram for explaining temporal polarization separation provided by an antenna apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0116] The antenna device 10 of the present invention can separate two types of orthogonal polarizations in time by assigning two types of orthogonal polarizations to a transmission channel and a reception channel so that a transmission beam and a reception beam formed in the same direction have different orthogonal polarizations.

[0117] In FIG. 8, the shaded area Tx indicates the time interval during which a signal is transmitted via the transmitting antenna element 1312, and the non-shaded area Rx indicates the time interval during which a signal is received via the receiving antenna element 1314.

[0118] In the example of Figure 8, ±45 degree orthogonal polarizations are used during the transmit time intervals and vertical / horizontal orthogonal polarizations are used during the receive time intervals, with different orthogonal polarizations being used separated in time. It should be understood that, contrary to what is illustrated, ±45 degree orthogonal polarizations may be used during the receive time intervals and vertical / horizontal orthogonal polarizations may be used during the transmit time intervals.

[0119] In particular, the antenna device 10 according to the present invention may have different orthogonal polarization characteristics between the transmitting antenna element and the receiving antenna element used for TDD operation, and therefore the orthogonal polarizations used for transmitting signals and receiving signals may be different from each other.

[0120] Channel non-reciprocity correction Channel reciprocity is a prerequisite that the channel characteristics of a downlink channel and an uplink channel are the same in the same frequency band, i.e., the downlink channel and the uplink channel have similar characteristics to each other.

[0121] By using channel reciprocity, a base station can obtain a downlink channel response using an uplink channel response, or a terminal can obtain an uplink channel response using a downlink channel response. Therefore, channel reciprocity is the biggest advantage of the TDD (Time Division Duplexing) scheme over the FDD (Frequency Division Duplexing) scheme.

[0122] FIG. 9 is a conceptual diagram for explaining a channel non-reciprocity problem that may occur when an antenna device uses different dual polarizations for signal transmission and signal reception.

[0123] As described above, the antenna device according to the present invention uses spatial polarization separation and temporal polarization separation. Therefore, the orthogonal polarization of a transmission beam formed toward a certain spatial direction may be different from the orthogonal polarization characteristic of a receiving antenna element used to receive a radio signal from that spatial direction. For example, for a certain spatial direction, the transmission beam may have orthogonal polarization of ±45°, and the receiving antenna element may have orthogonal polarization characteristics of H / V. As another example, the transmission beam may have orthogonal polarization of H / V, and the receiving antenna element may have orthogonal polarization characteristics of ±45°. In this way, when different orthogonal polarizations are used for the downlink and the uplink, the wireless channel characteristics become different between the uplink and the downlink, and thus the channel reciprocity between the downlink and the uplink is not established. That is, channel non-reciprocity occurs.

[0124] Such non-establishment of channel reciprocity (i.e., occurrence of channel non-reciprocity) does not pose a problem when beamforming is not performed or when beamforming is performed based on a channel state information-reference signal (CSI-RS) transmitted by a base station gNB to a terminal UE in 5G NR. However, when beamforming is performed based on a sounding reference signal (SRS), non-establishment of channel reciprocity may degrade the performance of the antenna device.

[0125] The SRS is an uplink reference signal that the terminal UE transmits to the base station gNB to estimate the state of the uplink channel, and the terminal UE can periodically or aperiodically transmit the SRS to the base station gNB to inform the base station gNB of the state information of the uplink channel. The base station gNB can obtain channel state information (CSI) of the uplink channel through the received SRS and determine a weight vector for downlink beamforming using the obtained CSI.

[0126] Therefore, when channel reciprocity does not hold, the performance of the antenna arrangement may be degraded if weight vectors determined using SRS are used for downlink beamforming.

[0127] To solve this problem, the antenna device 10 according to an embodiment of the present invention corrects channel non-reciprocity (i.e., ensures channel reciprocity) by matching the orthogonal polarization of the received signal to the orthogonal polarization of the transmission channel (or transmission beam) through signal processing of the received signal.

[0128] As described above, channel non-reciprocity compensation is achieved by polarization conversion in the polarization converter 1160, or alternatively by polarization combining and polarization allocation in the polarization combiner 1170 and polarization allocation unit 1180. Hereinafter, an exemplary structure for compensating for channel non-reciprocity and its operation will be described with reference to Figures 10a, 10b, 11a, and 11b.

[0129] The exemplary structure of FIG. 10 includes a polarization converter 1160 that performs the function of compensating for the non-reciprocity of the channel.

[0130] In the example of FIG. 10a, channel non-reciprocity correction is required because the orthogonal polarization characteristics (V / H) of the receive antenna element 1314 differs from the orthogonal polarization (±45°) of the downlink channel radio wave (or transmit beam).

[0131] Referring to FIG. 10a, two digital transmit signals assigned with ±45° orthogonal polarization are fed to the transmit antenna element 1312 through RF signal processing in the transmit RF chain 1210. When polarization components corresponding to ±45° orthogonal polarization are input to the transmit RF chain, the transmit antenna element 1312 has ±45° orthogonal polarization characteristics, and the radio waves of the downlink channel have ±45° orthogonal polarization. The receive antenna element 1314 receives the radio waves of the uplink channel and outputs an analog receive signal. The receive antenna element 1314 has V / H orthogonal polarization characteristics, and the analog receive signal corresponds to the V / H orthogonal polarization components of the radio waves. The analog receive signal is converted to a digital receive signal through RF signal processing in the receive RF chain 1220.

[0132] The polarization converter 1160 performs polarization conversion on the digital received signal and outputs a polarization-converted signal having the same orthogonal polarization as the orthogonal polarization of the downlink channel. The polarization conversion performed by the polarization converter 1160 is realized through a matrix operation of Equation 4 below.

[0133]

number

[0134] In the above formula 4, a and b are digital received signals input to the polarization conversion unit 1160, and a + b and a + b jπ is the polarization-converted received signal output from the polarization conversion unit 1160. Furthermore, in Equation 4, the matrix expressed by Equation 5 represents a PD (polarization decomposition) matrix for orthogonal polarization conversion. However, in order to avoid an increase in the power of the polarization-converted received signal, a scale factor is applied to all elements in the PD matrix. The scale factor is expressed by Equation 6.

number

[0135] In the example of Fig. 10b, the orthogonal polarization characteristics (V / H) of the receiving antenna element 1314 coincide with the orthogonal polarization (V / H) of the radio wave (or the transmission beam) of the downlink channel, so no channel non-reciprocity correction is required. Therefore, the polarization conversion unit 1160 outputs the input digital received signal as is without polarization conversion.

[0136] In the exemplary configurations of FIGS. 11 a and 11 b , the function of correcting channel non-reciprocity is implemented by the polarization allocation control unit 1142 , the reception polarization combining unit 1170 , and the reception polarization allocation unit 1180 .

[0137] In the example of Fig. 11a, the orthogonal polarization characteristics (V / H) of the receiving antenna element 1314 are different from the orthogonal polarization (±45°) of the radio wave (or the transmission beam) of the downlink channel, so channel non-reciprocity correction is required. Therefore, the orthogonal polarization is different between the signal input to the receiving polarization synthesis unit 1170 and the signal output from the receiving polarization allocation unit 1180.

[0138] 11a, the receive polarization combiner 1170 generates four polarization components for a pair of transmit signals, and in response to a control signal from the polarization allocation controller 1142, the receive polarization allocation unit 1140 outputs two polarization components corresponding to ±45° orthogonal polarizations. The two polarization components are fed to the transmit antenna element 1312 via the transmit RF chain 1210. The transmit antenna element 1312 has ±45° orthogonal polarization characteristics, and the radio wave (or transmit beam) of the downlink channel has ±45° orthogonal polarization.

[0139] The receiving antenna element 1314 receives radio waves of the uplink channel and outputs two analog receiving signals. The receiving antenna element 1314 has V / H orthogonal polarization characteristics, and the two analog receiving signals correspond to the V / H orthogonal polarization components of the radio waves. The two analog receiving signals are converted into two digital receiving signals through RF signal processing in the receiving RF chain 1220. The receiving polarization combining unit 1170 can combine four orthogonal polarization components from the two digital receiving signals.

[0140] In order to correct channel non-reciprocity, the polarization allocation control unit 1142 selects the same orthogonal polarization (i.e., ±45° orthogonal polarization) as the orthogonal polarization selected for the transmission polarization allocation unit 1140, and transmits an allocation control signal instructing the selected orthogonal polarization to the reception polarization allocation unit 1180. The reception polarization allocation unit 1180 outputs two polarization components of the four orthogonal polarization components that correspond to the orthogonal polarization (i.e., ±45° orthogonal polarization) instructed by the allocation control signal.

[0141] 11b, the orthogonal polarization characteristics (V / H) of the receiving antenna element 1314 match the orthogonal polarization (V / H) of the radio wave (or the transmission beam) of the downlink channel, so channel non-reciprocity correction is not required. Therefore, the orthogonal polarization does not change between the signal input to the receiving polarization combiner 1170 and the signal output from the receiving polarization allocation unit 1314.

[0142] 11b, in response to a control signal from the polarization allocation control unit 1142, the receive polarization allocation unit 1140 outputs two polarization components corresponding to V / H orthogonal polarizations. The two polarization components are fed to the transmit antenna element 1312 via the transmit RF chain 1210. The transmit antenna element 1312 has ±45° orthogonal polarization characteristics, and the radio wave (or transmit beam) of the downlink channel has V / H orthogonal polarizations due to polarization synthesis.

[0143] The receiving antenna element 1314 receives radio waves of the uplink channel and outputs two analog receiving signals.

[0144] The polarization allocation control unit 1142 selects the same orthogonal polarization (i.e., V / H orthogonal polarization) as the orthogonal polarization selected for the transmission polarization allocation unit 1140, and transmits an allocation control signal instructing the selected orthogonal polarization to the reception polarization allocation unit 1180. The reception polarization allocation unit 1180 outputs two polarization components of the four orthogonal polarization components that correspond to the orthogonal polarization (i.e., V / H orthogonal polarization) instructed by the allocation control signal.

[0145] In this way, the antenna device 10 according to the present invention can output a signal component corresponding to the same orthogonal polarization as the orthogonal polarization of the downlink channel (or the transmission beam, or the transmission channel) by performing polarization conversion or polarization synthesis and polarization allocation on the received signal input from the receiving antenna element 1314. This corrects channel non-reciprocity between the uplink channel and the downlink channel, thereby preventing degradation of the performance of the transmission beamforming performed based on the uplink channel state information CSI estimated from the SRS received in the uplink channel. In addition, since the antenna device 10 embodied in the RU corrects channel non-reciprocity through signal processing on the received signal, channel reciprocity is ensured in the DU.

[0146] Size and phase calibration As described above, in FIGS. 2A and 2B, the size and phase correcting unit 1150 can correct deviations in size and phase of the polarization that occur when the RF signal travels through the RF path.

[0147] The size and phase correction unit 1150 may be embodied as a single component that performs integrated size and phase correction for multiple transmit / receive signals or transmit / receive channels, or alternatively may be composed of multiple modules that individually perform size and phase correction for each of the multiple transmit / receive signals or transmit / receive channels.

[0148] Since the accuracy of the polarization combining generated in the antenna array 130 according to the present invention largely depends on the size and phase of the combined radio signal, such size and phase correction enhances the accuracy of the polarization combining. Therefore, the size and phase correction may be applied to all RF paths, but may be selectively applied only to a transmission path that requires polarization combining among a plurality of RF transmission paths and a reception path that requires channel non-reciprocity correction among a plurality of RF reception paths.

[0149] FIG. 12 is a block diagram showing an exemplary structure for performing transmit polarization combining calibration in an antenna apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0150] As illustrated in FIG. 12, the size / phase correction unit 1150 is configured to include a correction control unit 1152 and a plurality of correction execution units 1154.

[0151] The correction control unit 1152 collectively manages the size and phase corrections performed on a plurality of transmission channels. The correction control unit 1152 can compare the "polarized wave component output from the transmit polarization allocation unit 1140" with the "polarized wave component output from the transmit RF chain 1210" and generate a correction control signal for controlling the size and phase corrections performed by the correction execution unit 1154. The correction control signal includes the size value and phase value to be compensated.

[0152] The correction control unit 1152 transmits a correction control signal to each correction execution unit 1154. Each correction execution unit 1154 performs correction of the size and phase based on the correction control signal.

[0153] As described above, the size and phase correction may be selectively applied only to a transmission path among the multiple transmission paths in which the orthogonal polarization assigned to the transmission path differs from the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the transmitting antenna element (and therefore polarization synthesis occurs in the transmitting antenna element).

[0154] Therefore, when polarization combining does not occur in a transmitting antenna element, the correction control unit 1152 does not transmit a correction control signal to the associated correction execution unit 1154, or transmits a correction control signal in which the compensated size value and phase value are each set to 0 (zero) to the associated correction execution unit 1154.

[0155] 12, since the polarization allocation unit 1140-1 outputs polarization components "a" and "b" to the two transmission channels, respectively, the transmission beam radiated from the associated transmitting antenna element 1312 does not involve polarization synthesis. Therefore, the correction control unit 1152 does not transmit a correction control signal to the correction execution unit 1154-1, or transmits a correction control signal in which the compensated size value and phase value are each set to 0 (zero) to the correction execution unit 1154-1. On the other hand, the polarization allocation unit 1140-E outputs polarization components "i+j" and "i+je" to the two transmission channels, respectively. jπ ", so that the transmit beam radiated from the associated transmit antenna element 1312 involves polarization synthesis. Therefore, the correction control unit 1152 "compares the polarization components output from the transmit polarization allocation unit 1140-E with the polarization components output from the transmit RF chains 1210E-1 and 1210E-2, calculates the deviation between the transmit RF chains 1210E-1 and 1210E-2, and can generate a correction control signal for controlling the correction of size and phase performed by the correction execution unit 1154-E. The correction execution unit 1154-E can adjust the size and phase of the polarization components output from the transmit polarization allocation unit 1140-E based on the correction control signal, and compensate for the deviation of the size and phase characteristics of the RF path between the transmit RF chain 1210E-1 and the transmit RF chain 1210E-2.

[0156] The structure and method of operation illustrated in FIG. 12 are similarly applicable to compensating for deviations in size and phase characteristics of the RF paths between receive RF chains 1210-1 to 1210-M.

[0157] Such a size and phase correction function allows more accurate implementation of polarization synthesis and channel non-reciprocity correction occurring in the antenna array 130. In addition, the size and phase correction function is selectively applied only to a transmission path involving polarization synthesis and a reception path involving channel non-reciprocity correction, thereby reducing the computational burden of generating a correction control signal in the correction controller 1152 and enabling rapid size and phase correction.

[0158] 13 is a flow chart illustrating a method performed by a multiple beam antenna apparatus utilizing quadruple polarization according to one embodiment of the present invention, the multiple beam antenna apparatus comprising an array antenna including transmitting antenna elements used to form multiple transmitting beams and receiving antenna elements used to form multiple receiving beams.

[0159] The multi-beam antenna apparatus may generate a plurality of transmit polarization components from transmit signals corresponding to a pair of transmit channels associated with each transmit beam (S1310).

[0160] The multiple beam antenna device can output a pair of transmission polarization components corresponding to a first orthogonal polarization among the multiple transmission polarization components, or a pair of transmission polarization components corresponding to a second orthogonal polarization, for a pair of transmission channels associated with each transmission beam, such that spatially adjacent transmission beams have different orthogonal polarizations from each other (S1320).

[0161] A pair of transmission polarization components corresponding to a first orthogonal polarization can form a transmission beam having the first orthogonal polarization when radiated to a transmitting antenna element having the first orthogonal polarization (i.e., no polarization combining occurs). A pair of transmission polarization components corresponding to a second orthogonal polarization can form a transmission beam having the second orthogonal polarization by polarization combining when radiated to a transmitting antenna element having the first orthogonal polarization.

[0162] The multi-beam antenna apparatus may adjust the size and phase of a pair of transmit polarization components to compensate for deviations in size and phase characteristics between a pair of transmit paths corresponding to a pair of transmit channels associated with each transmit beam (S1330).

[0163] Correction of deviations in size and phase characteristics between the transmission paths is performed only when the transmission beam has an orthogonal polarization different from the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the transmission antenna elements due to polarization synthesis. That is, when the orthogonal polarization of a given transmission beam is different from the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the associated transmission antenna elements, the multi-beam antenna device can adjust the size and phase for a pair of transmission polarization components to correct deviations in size and phase characteristics between the pair of transmission paths associated with the given transmission beam. Furthermore, when the orthogonal polarization of a given transmission beam is the same as the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the associated transmission antenna elements, the multi-beam antenna device does not need to correct deviations in size and phase characteristics between the pair of transmission paths associated with the given transmission beam.

[0164] The multi-beam antenna device may adjust the size and phase of a pair of received signals output from a pair of receiving paths to correct deviations in size and phase characteristics between a pair of receiving paths corresponding to a pair of receiving channels associated with each receiving beam (S1340).

[0165] Correcting the deviation in size and phase characteristics between the receiving paths is performed only for a pair of receiving signals input from receiving antenna elements having orthogonal polarization characteristics different from the orthogonal polarization of the corresponding transmitting beam (hence channel non-reciprocity correction is required). Thus, when the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the receiving antenna elements associated with a given receiving beam are different from the orthogonal polarization of the transmitting beam formed toward the same spatial direction, the multiple beam antenna apparatus can adjust the size and phase for the pair of receiving signals to correct the deviation in size and phase characteristics between the pair of receiving paths associated with the given receiving beam. Furthermore, when the orthogonal polarization characteristics of the receiving antenna elements associated with a given receiving beam are the same as the orthogonal polarization of the transmitting beam formed toward the same spatial direction, the multiple beam antenna apparatus does not correct the deviation in size and phase characteristics between the pair of receiving paths associated with the given receiving beam.

[0166] The multi-beam antenna apparatus may perform channel non-reciprocity compensation on received signals corresponding to a pair of receiving channels associated with each receiving beam (S1350).

[0167] In some embodiments, as part of performing channel non-reciprocity compensation (S1350), the multiple beam antenna device may generate polarization-converted signals corresponding to the orthogonal polarizations of the transmit beams formed in the same spatial direction as each receive beam from the receive signals corresponding to the pair of receive channels associated with each receive beam. Specifically, the multiple beam antenna device may perform polarization conversion on a pair of receive signals (which require channel non-reciprocity compensation) input from a receive antenna element having orthogonal polarization characteristics different from the orthogonal polarizations of the corresponding transmit beams, and output a pair of receive polarization components corresponding to the orthogonal polarizations of the transmit beams formed in the same spatial direction.

[0168] In some other embodiments, as part of performing channel non-reciprocity compensation (S1350), the multi-beam antenna device may generate a plurality of receive polarization components from receive signals corresponding to a pair of receive channels associated with each receive beam. Further, the multi-beam antenna device may output a pair of receive polarization components corresponding to orthogonal polarizations of transmit beams formed toward the same spatial direction among the plurality of receive polarization components for a pair of receive channels associated with each receive beam.
