Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates generally to teeth and oral cavity cleaning devices, and more particularly to hand-held dental flossers (e.g., dental floss picks or dental floss holders) having means for adjusting floss tension, as well as methods of making and using such dental flossers. [Background technology]
[0002] Typically, the spaces between teeth and the surfaces of the teeth can be cleaned by a variety of methods, including brushing, mechanically driven water jets, toothpicks, and also by using dental floss or dental tape or similar floss, which is a string of fine fibers typically used to remove food and plaque from the teeth.
[0003] One of the main causes of dental caries (tooth decay) and one of the important causes of periodontal disease (gum and root) is the formation of plaque on the tooth surface. Once removed, new plaque can form again within 24 hours. Therefore, flossing at least once each day is required to maintain optimal dental hygiene and health.
[0004] Many people do not floss their teeth on a regular basis because the procedure of using a typical dental floss is difficult and lengthy. The use of a handheld dental flosser (also known as a floss holder or floss pick) makes flossing more convenient and easier. Typically, a dental flosser includes two tips extending from a thin plastic body (or handle). A floss strand is stretched between the two tips. As an example, U.S. Design Application No. D618396, entitled "Dental floss pick," discloses a typical dental flosser. A typical dental flosser is often fabricated from a hard, inflexible plastic material, and the floss strand is fixed between the two tips.
[0005] A major drawback of typical dental flossers is that the tension of the floss bundle is fixed, and the relatively high tension required for proper insertion of dental floss between the teeth, an action that requires the dental floss bundle to maintain tension, does not allow the dental floss bundle to curve around the contours of the teeth away from the interdental spaces, and as a result, proper cleaning of plaque and bacteria from tooth surfaces other than the interdental surfaces cannot be easily accomplished.
[0006] It would therefore be desirable to provide an improved handheld dental flosser that has a means for adjusting floss tension and that more efficiently cleans tooth surfaces (including the front, back, and interdental surfaces) around the tooth contours.
[0007] The drawings show non-limiting examples of the invention. [Brief description of the drawings]

[0009] Throughout the following description, specific details are set forth to provide a more complete understanding of the present invention. However, the present invention may be practiced without these details. In other instances, well-known elements have not been shown or described in detail to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the point of the invention. Thus, the specification and drawings are to be regarded as illustrative rather than restrictive.
[0010] One aspect of the present invention relates to a handheld dental flosser. The dental flosser comprises a U-shaped portion having two arms (a first arm and a second arm) spaced apart from one another, and a hand-held portion connected to the U-shaped portion. The dental flosser further comprises a floss bundle. The floss bundle has a first end and a second end. The first end of the floss bundle is fixedly attached to the first arm of the U-shaped portion, such that the position of the first end of the floss bundle does not move relative to the first arm of the U-shaped portion. The attachment position may be at the end of the first arm of the U-shaped portion, or may be adjacent to the end of the first arm of the U-shaped portion. The second end of the floss bundle is attached to a floss bundle attachment piece. A user may manually (or mechanically or electrically) manipulate the floss bundle attachment piece to move the second end of the floss bundle to increase, decrease or maintain tension on the floss bundle. The middle portion of the floss bundle is slidably attached to the second arm of the U-shaped portion, so that the middle portion of the floss bundle is slidable relative to the second arm of the U-shaped portion. To allow the middle portion of the floss bundle to be slidably attached to the second arm of the U-shaped portion, an attachable mechanism member, such as a fixed pulley, a pivot, a wheel, a rotor, a channel, a passage, a hole, or other suitable means, may be applied. The location of the attachment mechanism may be at the end of the second arm of the U-shaped portion. It may also be near the end of the second arm of the U-shaped portion. The attachment mechanism allows the floss bundle to slide while preventing the floss bundle from being completely separated from the second arm of the U-shaped portion.
[0011] One concept of the present invention relates to a handheld dental flosser. The dental flosser comprises a U-shaped portion having two arms spaced apart from each other, a hand-held portion connected to the U-shaped portion, and a slide member portion separate from or removably connected to the hand-held portion (or U-shaped portion). In some embodiments, the U-shaped portion, the hand-held portion, and the slide member portion are all made of the same suitable material (e.g., plastic) and manufactured using an injection molding process. In some embodiments, the dental flosser is manufactured as a one-piece product with the U-shaped portion, the hand-held portion, and the slide member portion connected to each other. The slide member portion may be connected to the hand-held portion or the U-shaped portion at a narrow connection point, and a user may apply force to the connection point to separate the slide member portion from the hand-held portion or the U-shaped portion, so that the slide member becomes a separate element.
[0012] The dental flosser further comprises a floss bundle. In some embodiments, the floss bundle is injection molded in situ with the dental flosser. The floss bundle has two ends. A first end of the floss bundle is fixedly embedded in a first arm of the U-shaped portion (i.e., the arm distal to the handle). A second end of the floss bundle is fixedly embedded in the slide member. There are several ways to rigidly secure the ends of the floss bundle. One method is to extend the ends of the floss bundle from the plastic material during the injection molding process and heat or burn the ends of the floss bundle to coalesce into beads having a larger diameter than the floss, which prevents the floss bundle from being pulled out of the plastic material.
[0013] The intermediate portion of the floss bundle passes through a channel in the second arm of the U-shaped section, the channel being created when the floss bundle is injection molded in situ with the axial flosser, and the intermediate portion of the floss bundle is slidable in the channel in the second arm of the U-shaped section.
[0014] The floss bundle has three contact points (or contact areas) with the dental flosser. The floss bundle has a first end that is fixed to the first arm of the U-shaped section. This is the first contact point. The floss bundle has a second end that is fixed to the sliding member. This is the second contact point. Between its first and second ends, the floss bundle also contacts the second arm of the U-shaped section by passing through a channel or some other attachment mechanism in the second arm of the U-shaped section. This is the third contact point. In this concept, the function of the second arm of the U-shaped section with respect to the floss bundle is similar to a fixed pulley, allowing the floss bundle to be attached to and slide around the second arm. The floss bundle has a fixed length between its ends. However, the portion of the floss bundle between the first and second arms of the U-shaped section is adjustable by the user.
[0015] One concept of the present invention relates to a method of using the handheld dental flosser disclosed herein. When the floss bundle attachment piece (e.g., slide member portion) is connected to the handheld portion of the dental flosser, the user may first separate the slide member portion from the dental flosser. The user may then pull or hold the floss bundle to increase or maintain tension on the floss bundle between the first and second arms of the U-shaped portion. Alternatively, the user may attach the floss bundle attachment piece to a mechanical or electrical mechanism to increase or maintain tension on the floss bundle. When the floss bundle is in tension, the user may manipulate the dental flosser to insert the floss bundle between two adjacent teeth. Once the floss bundle is inserted into the interdental space, the user may decrease tension on the floss bundle (i.e., release the floss bundle) either manually or via a mechanical or electrical mechanism. In this manner, the floss bundle can bend around the contours of the tooth to clean multiple surfaces of that tooth, including the front and back surfaces of the tooth as well as the interdental surfaces. After the user has cleaned the tooth, the user may again increase or maintain tension on the floss bundle to pull the floss bundle from between the teeth. The user may repeat this process by adjusting the tension on the floss bundle to clean other teeth in the user's mouth.
[0016] In some embodiments, the dental flosser includes a longitudinal guide groove or channel in the hand-held portion. The groove or channel is dimensioned such that a slide member can fit into and slide along the groove or channel. A user may fit the slide member into the groove or channel and then slide the slide member along the groove or channel with their thumb or finger. When the slide member is moved in one direction, it increases the tension of the floss bundle. When the slide member is moved in another direction, it decreases the tension of the floss bundle. Thus, a user can arbitrarily adjust the tension of the floss bundle by sliding the slide member along the guide groove.
[0017] It should be understood that adjustment of the tension of the floss bundle is accomplished via a floss bundle attachment piece (e.g., a slide member) that is connected to only one end of the floss bundle, with the other end of the floss bundle being rigidly fixed to one of the arms of the U-shaped section. Thus, one end of the floss bundle is fixed and the other end of the floss bundle is movable as the user moves or manipulates the floss bundle attachment piece. In this manner, the user can easily adjust the tension of the floss bundle because the position of one end of the floss bundle is fixed.
[0018] It should be understood that adjustment of the tension of the floss bundle is not accomplished through deformation of the U-shaped portion. The U-shaped portion is a generally rigid structure that does not easily deform. The dental flosser may be manufactured from a thermoplastic material having sufficient rigidity or toughness. The distance between the first and second arms of the U-shaped portion does not generally change.
[0019] 1 and 2 show a dental flosser 10 according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. Dental flosser 10 comprises a U-shaped portion 12, a hand-held portion 14, and a removable slide member portion 16. In FIG. 1, slide member portion 16 is connected to hand-held portion 14 at a narrow connection point 18. Dental flosser 10 is manufactured as a one-piece product via an injection molding process. The material for manufacturing dental flosser 10 may be a thermoplastic material.
[0020] In Figure 2, the slide member portion 16 has been separated from the hand-held portion to form a separate slide member element. This separation is typically performed by a user. The U-shaped portion 12 comprises a base 20 and a pair of spaced apart arms 22 and 24 extending from the base 20. In Figure 1, the arms 22 and 24 are shown as being oriented substantially parallel to one another, but it will be appreciated that they may be otherwise oriented to provide separate ends.
[0021] A strand of dental floss 26 extends from arm 22 to arm 24 and onto slide member portion 16. A first end of strand of floss 26 is fixedly secured to arm 22. A second end of strand of floss 26 is fixedly secured to slide member portion 16. An end portion of strand of floss 26 is embedded into arm 22 and slide member 16. During the manufacturing process, dental flosser 10 is injection molded in place with strand of floss 26 so that strand of floss 26 passes through arm 22, arm 24, and slide member portion 16. Strand of floss 26 slides through a channel in arm 24. An end of strand of floss 26 is fixed to arm 22 or slide member portion 16. One example method is to extend the end of the floss strand 26 from the plastic material during an injection molding process and heat or burn the end of the floss strand to coalesce into a bead having a larger diameter than the floss, which prevents the floss strand from being pulled out of the arm 22 or slide member portion 16.
[0022] The U-shaped portion 12 and the hand-handle portion 14 are generally planar members. The plane of the U-shaped portion 12 is substantially the same plane as the hand-handle portion 14. Thus, the floss bundle 26, when under tension, is in the same plane as the plane of the hand-handle portion 14. This feature allows a user to more easily orient the floss bundle 26 when using the dental flosser 10 by holding the hand-handle portion 14 and placing the floss bundle 26 in the interdental space between the teeth.
[0023] Dental flosser 10 further includes a groove 28 in hand-held portion 14. Groove 28 is an elongated groove. The lateral dimensions and depth of groove 28 are set so that slide member 16 is received in groove 28 and can move along groove 28 in the longitudinal direction of groove 28. The longitudinal length of groove 28 controls the maximum extent to which slide member 16 can move along groove 28.
[0024] Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of slide member 16 separated from the remainder of the dental flosser. For simplicity, the floss strands are not shown in Figure 3. One end of slide member 16 includes a female member and the other end of the slide member includes a male member having corresponding dimensions such that the male member can mate with the female member when the slide member is folded.
[0025] Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of the slide member of Figure 3 with the slide member folded to connect the male member to the female member. The folded slide member 16 is easier to grasp and manipulate with a user's thumb or fingers.
[0026] 5 shows dental flosser 10 with slide member 16 folded and fitted into groove 28 of dental flosser 10. FIG 6 shows slide member 16 folded, making it easier for a user to hold and manipulate slide member 16.
[0027] 7 shows slide member 16 moving in a first direction along groove 28 to increase tension on floss bundle 26. In FIG. 7, floss bundle 26 between arms 22 and 24 is straight in a tensioned state. With floss bundle 26 under tension, a user can push dental flosser 10 downward to insert floss bundle 26 into the interdental space between two adjacent teeth.
[0028] 8 shows slide member 16 moving in a second direction along groove 28 to reduce tension on floss strand 26. In FIG. 8, floss strand 26 between arms 22 and 24 is relaxed and has an increased length. The user manipulates dental flosser 10 sideways to bend floss strand 26 around the contours of the teeth.
[0029] It should be understood that the overall length of floss bundle 26 provided on dental flosser 10 is fixed. Floss bundle 26 is already affixed to dental flosser 10 during the manufacturing process. The user does not need to attach or tension floss bundle 26 to dental flosser 10. However, the user can manipulate slide member 16 to adjust the length (and tension) of the portion of floss bundle 26 between arms 22 and 24.
[0030] Figure 9 is a schematic top view showing two adjacent teeth and the position of a tensioned dental bundle in the interdental space between the teeth. Figure 10 is a schematic top view showing two adjacent teeth and the position of a relaxed dental bundle surrounding the interdental space, anterior and posterior surfaces of the teeth.
[0031] Compared with a typical dental flosser, the dental flosser 10 is advantageous in several ways. First, the dental flosser 10 can be used to simultaneously clean three surfaces of one tooth (interproximal, anterior, and posterior). Second, the user can arbitrarily adjust the tension of the floss bundle. Since one end of the floss bundle is fixed to the arm 22 and does not move, the user only needs to move the other end of the floss bundle attached to the slide member 16. Third, the user can adjust the length of the floss bundle between the arm 22 and the arm 24 to fit teeth having different sizes and dimensions. Fourth, the dental flosser 10 is conveniently manufactured in an injection molding process as a one-piece product including the floss bundle and the detachable or removable slide member part. Fifth, the amount of material for manufacturing the dental flosser 10 is not much more than the amount of material for manufacturing a typical dental flosser. Since the slide member is a small element, it does not increase the amount of material for manufacturing the dental flosser 10 significantly. Injection molding equipment is available or applicable for manufacturing dental flosser 10. Manufacturing dental flosser 10 does not require specialized equipment or machinery or assembly. Sixth, dental flosser 10 can be sold as a disposable product, providing greater convenience to certain customers. Seventh, because floss bundle 26 is always firmly secured to dental flosser 10, users do not need to worry about floss bundle 26 accidentally becoming detached from dental flosser 10.
[0032] 11-13 show a dental flosser 100 according to another exemplary embodiment of the present invention. The dental flosser 100 comprises a U-shaped portion 112, a handle portion 114, and a floss bundle attachment structure 116. The U-shaped portion 112 comprises a base 120 and a pair of arms (first arm 122 and second arm 124) extending from the base 120 and spaced apart. The dental flosser 100 comprises a floss bundle 126. The floss bundle 100 has a first end fixedly attached to the first arm 122 of the U-shaped portion 112. The position of the first end of the floss bundle 126 does not move relative to the first arm 122 of the U-shaped portion 112. As shown in FIGS. 11-13, the first end of the floss bundle 126 is fixedly attached to the end of the first arm 122. The floss bundle 100 has a second end fixedly attached to the floss bundle attachment structure 116. 11-13, floss bundle attachment structure 116 is separable from hand-held portion 114, yet connectable to a rotation mechanism 128 in hand-held portion 114. A user may manually (or mechanically or electrically) manipulate floss bundle attachment structure 116 to move the second end of floss bundle 126 to increase, decrease, or maintain tension on the floss bundle.
[0033] An intermediate portion of the floss bundle 126 is slidably attached to the second arm 124 of the U-shaped portion 112 such that the intermediate portion of the floss bundle is slidable relative to the second arm 124 of the U-shaped portion 112. To allow the intermediate portion of the floss bundle to be slidably attached to the second arm of the U-shaped portion, any number of attachment mechanisms may be applied, such as a fixed pulley, a pivot, a wheel, a rotor, a channel, a passageway, a hole, or other suitable means. In the example shown in FIG. 11, the attachment mechanism is a channel at or near the end of the second arm 124 of the U-shaped portion 112. The intermediate portion of the floss bundle 126 can slide through the channel in the second arm 124.
[0034] The dental flosser 100 includes a rotation mechanism 128. The rotation mechanism may be a manual, mechanical, or electrical rotation mechanism. As shown in FIGS. 12 and 13, a user may attach the floss bundle attachment structure 116 to the rotation mechanism 128. Once attached, the user may rotate the rotation mechanism 128 in one direction (e.g., counterclockwise) to increase tension on the floss bundle 126. The user may also rotate the rotation mechanism 128 in another direction (e.g., clockwise) to decrease tension on the floss bundle 126. If necessary, the user may remove the floss bundle attachment structure 116 from the rotation mechanism 128. FIG. 14 shows an enlarged cross-sectional view of an exemplary rotation mechanism 128 that may be used. The rotation mechanism 128 includes a recess 130 for receiving the floss bundle attachment structure 116 and an annular groove 132 for winding the floss bundle 126.
[0035] As will be apparent to those skilled in the art in light of the foregoing description, many alterations and variations are possible in the practice of this invention. The scope of the claims should not be limited by the preferred embodiments set forth in the examples, but should be accorded the broadest interpretation consistent with the description as a whole.
