Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates generally to self-locking clamps, mounting systems, and methods for installing clamps without the need for tools or hardware, and more particularly to self-locking clamps, mounting systems, and methods for securing electrical cables, conduits, pneumatic lines, hydraulic lines, and other such components attached to structural members such as metal beams. [Background technology]
[0002] Vehicle, aircraft, and building interior structures use structural members such as beams that have openings formed therein for components such as electrical cables, conduits, and the like that extend through the openings in the structural members. These openings, which are formed in a variety of ways such as by stamping, cutting, punching, and the like, often have sharp edges that can abrade or cut cable insulation or otherwise damage the components that extend through the beam opening. It is therefore common practice to provide brackets or bushings that fit into the openings to cover these edges and protect the components.
[0003] Various types of bushings are known and used for the purposes described. One known configuration consists of two pieces that snap together when the bushing is installed in the beam opening. This type of bushing has several drawbacks and difficulties, including the need to form and store multiple pieces, and the time and inconvenience of handling and assembling the bushing parts in the field.
[0004] While one-piece bushings are known, they present certain problems and drawbacks. For example, some conventional one-piece bushings can be difficult to insert into an opening. This is especially true when the bushing is configured to prevent dislodging when an electrical cable or other component is pulled through the bushing.
[0005] Another difficulty common to both the multi-piece and one-piece bushings of the prior art is that a single bushing is not designed to accommodate the wide range of different thicknesses of structural members. As structural members are formed to different thicknesses, it has become necessary to maintain a supply of different sized bushings that can be selected and used depending on the construction of the stud. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0006] It would therefore be beneficial to provide a self-locking clamp, mounting system, and method that overcomes problems with the known art by providing a system that is easy to install, can be used with structural members of various thicknesses, and can be properly attached to the structural members in a fixed orientation. It would also be beneficial to provide a tool-less, hardware-less self-locking mounting system that allows the clamp to be attached to a bracket of the mounting system. [Means for solving the problem]
[0007] This solution is provided by a mounting system including a bracket and a clamp, the bracket having a mounting projection having a mounting aperture extending between side walls of the mounting projection, the clamp having a mounting portion and a clamping portion, the mounting portion having a projection-receiving aperture for receiving the mounting projection therein, and a latching mechanism extending from the clamping portion, the latching mechanism having a lock that is movable between an unlocked position and a locked position.
[0008] Other features and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following more detailed description of the exemplary embodiments, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings which illustrate, by way of example, the principles of the invention. [0014] As shown in FIG. 1, an exemplary bracket 10 is shown in an opening 12 in a structural member 14. The bracket 10 may be made of, for example, a polymeric material, a thermoplastic material, a composite material, or a metal. The opening 12 may be a lightening hole or other type of opening. The structural member 14 may be, but is not limited to, a frame or bulkhead of a vehicle, a beam or bulkhead of an aircraft, or a beam of a building. The opening 12 may be formed in a variety of ways, such as by stamping, cutting, punching, etc. The opening 12 has sidewalls or edges that may fray or cut or otherwise damage a component extending through the opening 12. The component may be, but is not limited to, a cable, a cable bundle, or a pipe. The illustrated bracket 10 is exemplary as other embodiments of the bracket 10 may be used. For example, but not limited to, the bracket 10 may be an L-bracket, an edge mounting bracket, a rotating adhesive mounting bracket, or a rotating rivet mounting bracket.
[0015] Bracket 10 includes a circular portion or grommet portion 20 that is fastened to structural member 14 by fasteners 22, such as, but not limited to, rivets. Bracket 10 is fastened to structural member 14 to prevent bracket 10 from rotating relative to structural member 14. A flange 21 and a structural plate 23 extend from grommet portion 20. Flange 21 cooperates with structural member 14 to properly position grommet portion 20 relative to structural member 14. Structural plate 23 cooperates with fasteners 22 to retain grommet portion 20 to structural member 14. The axis of opening 12 is perpendicular to the plane of the structural plate.
[0016] As shown in FIG. 1, grommet portion 20 has a circular transverse cross-section. However, grommet portion 20 may have other configurations, such as, but not limited to, an oval transverse cross-section, without departing from the scope of the present invention. Grommet portion 20 is shaped and sized to properly fit opening 12. Circular grommet portion 20 is shaped to fit within opening 12 in structural member 14, and grommet portion 20 is of sufficient length to ensure that the component does not contact the sidewalls of structural member 14. Bracket 10 is configured to support and protect the component from the sidewalls or edges of structural member 14 to which bracket 10 is mechanically secured.
[0017] As shown in FIG. 1, a mounting projection or protrusion 30 extends from the grommet portion 20. The projection 30 has a top or cable support wall 32, an oppositely facing bottom wall 34, and a side wall 36 extending between the cable support wall 32 and the bottom wall 34. The cable support wall 32 is positioned along an inner surface 38 of the grommet portion 20. A fastening or mounting opening 40 extends through the projection 30 in a direction essentially parallel to the cable support wall 32. The opening 40 extends through the side wall 36. As shown in FIGS. 3, 5, and 7, the opening 40 has a first or front wall 42 and a second or rear wall 44.
[0018] 2-7, a cable clamp 50 may be used to secure components to the bracket 10 and structural member 14. In the exemplary embodiment shown, the clamp 50 has a mounting portion 52 and a clamping portion 54. The clamping portion 54 has a fixed clamping arm 56 and a movable clamping arm 58 that pivots about a pivot member 60 between an open position and a closed or clamped position. The movable clamping arm 58 cooperates with the component when the component is positioned between the fixed clamping arm 56 and the movable clamping arm 58 and the movable clamping arm 58 moves to the closed position. The fixed clamping arm 56 extends from and is attached to the mounting portion 52. In the illustrated embodiment, the clamp portion 54 is a P-clamp, although other types of clamps may be used. P-clamps are described in U.S. Patent Application Publication Nos. 2018 / 0273500 and 2017 / 0146154, which are incorporated by reference in their entireties.
[0019] The clamping portion 54 may be configured to cooperate with components of different sizes. For example, the clamping portion may have a diameter range of 3.175-6.35 mm, 6.35-9.525 mm, 9.525-12.7 mm, 12.7-15.875 mm, 15.875-19.05 mm, 19.05-22.2 mm, or 22.2-25.4 mm when in the closed or clamped position.
[0020] 3, 5 and 7, mounting portion 52 has a front wall 63, a rear wall 65, and a side wall 68. A projection receiving opening 70 extends through mounting portion 52 from one side wall 68 to the opposing side wall 68.
[0021] The opening 70 has a front or first wall 72. The opening is sized to receive the projection 30 therein. The opening 70 is configured to have a shape similar to, but slightly larger than, the projection 30 to allow the projection 30 to be inserted into the opening 70 and to prevent unwanted movement of the clamp 50 relative to the bracket 10.
[0022] A latch receiving cavity 76 is provided in the front wall 63 of the mounting portion 52. The latch receiving cavity 76 extends from one side wall 68 to the opposing side wall 68. A fastener receiving opening or cavity 73 extends through the side wall 68 and into the opening 70.
[0023] As shown in Figures 3, 5 and 7, a latch mechanism 78 is positioned in the latch receiving cavity 76. The latch mechanism 78 has a first latch arm 79 extending from a cross member 80 that is retained in the latch receiving cavity 76. The first latch arm 79 has a first engagement portion 81, a first pivot portion 82 and a first fixed member or portion 83. A first opening 84 is provided within the first pivot portion 82. The first fixed portion 83 has a first fixed surface 77 at a free end of the first fixed portion 83 spaced from the first pivot portion 82. The first fixed portion 83 has a first cam surface 94 extending between the first fixed surface 77 and the first pivot portion 82.
[0024] The latch mechanism 78 has a second latch arm 85 extending from the cross member 80 held in the latch receiving cavity 76. The second latch arm 85 has a second engagement portion 86, a second pivot portion 87, and a second fixed portion 88. A second opening 89 is provided within the second pivot portion 87. The second fixed portion 88 has a second fixed surface 90 at a free end of the second fixed portion 88 spaced from the second pivot portion 87. The second fixed portion 88 has a second cam surface 95 extending between the second fixed surface 90 and the second pivot portion 87. The second latch arm 85 has an overstress protection member 91 (FIG. 7) extending from the second engagement portion 86.
[0025] The first opening 84 and the second opening 89 fit over the posts 92 of the mounting portion 52 to hold the latch mechanism 78 in place on the mounting portion 52. Additionally, the cross-member 80, which is positioned in the latch-receiving cavity 76, further holds the latch mechanism 78 in place on the mounting portion 52. Positioning the posts 92 in the openings 84, 89 allows the fixed portions 83, 88 to pivot or rotate about the posts 92. Positioning the cross-member 80 in the latch-receiving cavity 76 prevents the latch mechanism from moving in a direction along the longitudinal axis 93 (FIG. 3) of the mounting portion 52. However, the cross-member 80 is free to move in the latch-receiving cavity 76 in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis 93 of the mounting portion 52.
[0026] First fixed portion 83 is configured to rotate about a respective post 92 between a first or unlocked position (shown in FIG. 3) and a second or locked position (shown in FIG. 7). Second fixed portion 88 is configured to rotate about another respective post 92 between a first or unlocked position (shown in FIG. 3) and a second or locked position (shown in FIG. 7).
[0027] Installation of clamp 50 onto mounting projection 30 of bracket 10 is shown in Figures 3-7. Prior to clamp 50 engaging mounting projection 30, latch mechanism 78 is in the position shown in Figures 2 and 3. In this position, first cam surface 94 and a portion of first fastening surface 77 of first fastening portion 83 extend through fastener receiving cavity 73 and into projection receiving opening 70. The configuration of latch mechanism 78, together with cooperation of first pivot portion 82 and post 92, resiliently maintains first cam surface 94 and a portion of first fastening surface 77 of first fastening portion 83 in an initial position.
[0028] Similarly, second cam surface 95 and a portion of second fixation surface 90 of second fixation portion 88 extend through fixation member receiving cavity 73 and into protrusion receiving opening 70. The configuration of latch mechanism 78 and cooperation of second pivot portion 87 and post 92 resiliently maintain second cam surface 95 and a portion of second fixation surface 90 of second fixation portion 88 in an initial position.
[0029] 4 and 5, as clamp 50 moves onto mounting projection 30 of bracket 10, mounting projection 30 moves into projection-receiving opening 70. As this occurs, side wall 36 of mounting projection 30 engages first cam surface 94 and second cam surface 95, causing cam surfaces 94, 95 and fixed portions 83, 88 to resiliently pivot about pivot portions 82, 87 and post 92. This allows clamp 50 to be continuously engaged onto mounting projection 30 of bracket 10.
[0030] As shown in Figures 6 and 7, engagement continues until the mounting projection 30 engages or is adjacent to the wall 72 of the projection receiving opening 70. In this position, the cam surfaces 94, 95 are positioned along the fixed or mounting opening 40 of the mounting projection 30. This allows the cam surfaces 94, 95 and fixed portions 83, 88 to pivot about the pivot portions 82, 87 and the posts 92 to resiliently return toward an unstressed or initial position. As shown in Figure 7, with the fixed portions 83, 88 positioned in the mounting opening 40, the fixed surfaces 77, 90 engage or are adjacent to the first or front wall 42 of the opening 40. In this position, the clamp 50 is secured to the mounting projection 30 of the bracket 10.
[0031] 7, the latch mechanism 78 resists unwanted removal of the clamp 50 from the mounting projection 30 of the bracket 10. When a force F1 is applied to the clamp 50, a resultant force F2, F3 is applied to the fastening surfaces 77, 90 of the fastening portions 83, 88 of the latch mechanism 78. Because the fastening surfaces 77, 90 have an arcuate shape, the application of the force causes the fastening surfaces 77, 90 and the fastening portions 83, 88 to pivot further into the mounting opening 40, thereby preventing unwanted removal of the clamp 50 from the bracket 10.
[0032] To remove the clamp 50 from the mounting projection 30 of the bracket 10, an operator or user applies forces F4 and F5 to the first engagement portion 81 of the first latch arm 79 and the second engagement portion 86 of the second latch arm 85. By applying forces F4 and F5, the latch arms 79, 85 move inward toward each other. This causes the fixing surfaces 77, 90 and the fixing portions 83, 88 to pivot outward about the pivot portions 82, 87 and the support posts 92, and the fixing surfaces 77, 90 to exit the opening 40. With the fixing surfaces 77, 90 removed from the opening 40, the clamp 50 can be removed from the mounting projection 30 of the bracket 10.
[0033] The first latch arm 79 and the second latch arm 85 comprise two pivoting self-locking latches which ensure that the cable clamp 50 cannot vibrate loose from the bracket 10 when the latch arms 79, 85 are in a locked state. Having two self-locking latch arms 79, 85 adds an element of redundancy as either of the two pivoting self-locking latch arms 79, 85 can solely hold the clamp 50 securely to the bracket 10. Additionally, the latch arms 79, 85 are self-tightening or self-locking due to the geometry of their design when in the locked position.
[0034] Latch arms 79, 85 and latch mechanism 78 allow a user to install clamp 50 by simply pressing clamp 50 against mounting lug 30 of bracket 10. Latch arms 79, 85 of latch mechanism 78 automatically lock into place, simplifying the installation procedure and eliminating the risk of forgetting to latch the clamp in place.
[0035] The latch mechanism 78 and the latch arms 79, 85 are ergonomically and spatially designed. A user only needs to grasp the first and second engagement portions 81, 86 of the latch mechanism 78 to pull the clamp 50 out of the bracket 10. By grasping the first and second engagement portions 81, 86, the two pivoting latch arms 79, 85 can be pushed out of the locked position to allow the clamp 50 to be removed.
[0036] An alternative embodiment of clamp 150 is shown in Figures 8-12. As shown in Figures 11 and 12, latch mechanism 178 has a latch arm 179 including an engagement portion 181, a pivot portion 182, and a fixed member or portion 183. An opening 184 is provided within pivot portion 182. Fixed portion 183 has a fixed surface 177 provided at a free end of fixed portion 183 spaced from pivot portion 182.
[0037] The first opening 184 fits over a post 192 of the mounting portion 152 to hold the latch mechanism 178 in place on the mounting portion 152. Positioning the post 192 in the opening 184 allows the fixed portion 183 to pivot or rotate about the post 192. The fixed portion 183 is configured to rotate about the post 192 between a first or unlocked position (shown in FIG. 9) and a second or locked position (shown in FIG. 10).
[0038] Installation of clamp 150 onto mounting projection 30 of bracket 10 is shown in Figures 8-10. Prior to clamp 150 engaging mounting projection 30, latch mechanism 178 is in the position shown in Figure 8. In this position, first fastening surface 177 of fastener portion 183 does not extend through fastener receiving cavity 173 and does not extend into projection receiving opening 170. Cam surface 194 and a portion of fastener surface 177 of fastener portion 183 are in an initial position.
[0039] As shown in Figures 9 and 10, engagement of clamp 150 onto bracket 10 continues until clamp 50 engages or is adjacent to the bracket. At this position, latch mechanism 178 rotates from the position shown in Figure 9 to the position shown in Figure 10. As this occurs, cam surface 194 positioned along the fastening or mounting opening 40 of mounting projection 30 pivots about pivot portion 182 and post 192 to move to a locked position where fastening portion 183 is positioned in mounting opening 40. At this position, fastening surface 177 engages or is adjacent to first or front wall 42 of opening 40, thereby securing clamp 150 to mounting projection 30 of bracket 10.
[0040] 11 , the latch mechanism 178 resists unwanted removal of the clamp 150 from the mounting projection 30 of the bracket 10. When a force F6 is applied to the clamp 150, a resultant force F7 is applied to the fastening surface 177 of the fastening portion 183 of the latch mechanism 178. Because the fastening surface 177 has an arc-like shape, the application of the force causes the fastening surface 177 and the fastening portion 183 to pivot or rotate further into the mounting opening 40, thereby preventing unwanted removal of the clamp 150 from the bracket 10.
[0041] To remove clamp 150 from mounting projection 30 of bracket 10, an operator or user rotates latch mechanism 178 from the position shown in FIG. 10 to the position shown in FIG. 9, which causes fastening surface 177 to move out of opening 40. With fastening surface 177 removed from opening 40, clamp 150 can be removed from mounting projection 30 of bracket 10.
[0042] The clamps 50, 150 provide a secure means of clamping components, such as cable bundles, in a tool-less, quick-installation manner, reducing the number of parts that need to be stored. Additionally, the first latch mechanism 78, 178 ensures that the clamps 50, 150 are secured to the components and bracket 10 and cannot vibrate loose.
[0043] 13, an alternative bracket 210 is shown in an opening 212 in a structural member 214. The bracket 210 may be made of, for example, a polymeric material, a thermoplastic material, a composite material, or a metal. The opening 212 may be a lightening hole or other type of opening. The structural member 214 may be, but is not limited to, a frame or bulkhead of a vehicle, a beam or bulkhead of an aircraft, or a beam of a building. The opening 212 may be formed in a variety of ways, such as by stamping, cutting, punching, etc. The opening 212 has sidewalls or edges that may fray or cut or otherwise damage a component 18 extending through the opening 212. The component 18 may be, but is not limited to, a cable, cable bundle, or pipe.
[0044] Bracket 210 includes a circular portion or grommet portion 220 that is fastened to structural member 214 by fastening members 222, such as, but not limited to, rivets. Bracket 210 is fastened to structural member 214 to prevent bracket 210 from rotating relative to structural member 214. A flange 221 and a structural plate 223 extend from grommet portion 220. Flange 221 cooperates with structural member 214 to properly position grommet portion 220 relative to structural member 214. Structural plate 223 cooperates with fastening members 222 to hold grommet portion 220 to structural member 214. The axis of opening 212 is perpendicular to the plane of the structural plate.
[0045] 13, grommet portion 220 has a circular transverse cross-section. However, grommet portion 220 may have other shapes, such as, but not limited to, an oval transverse cross-section, without departing from the scope of the present invention. Grommet portion 220 is shaped and sized to properly fit opening 212. Circular grommet portion 220 is shaped to fit into opening 212 in structural member 214, and grommet portion 220 is of sufficient length to ensure that component 218 does not contact the sidewalls of structural member 214. Bracket 210 is configured to support component 218 and protect component 218 from the sidewalls or edges of structural member 214 to which bracket 210 is mechanically secured.
[0046] 13, a projection or protrusion 230 extends from grommet portion 220. Projection 230 has a top or cable support wall 232, an opposing bottom wall 234, and a side wall 236 extending between cable support wall 232 and bottom wall 234. Cable support wall 232 is positioned along an inner surface 238 of grommet portion 220. A mounting opening 240 extends through projection 230 in a direction essentially parallel to cable support wall 232. Opening 240 extends through side wall 236.
[0047] 19 and 21, a fixing projection 235 extends from the bottom wall 234 in a direction away from the cable support wall 232. The fixing projection 235 has a fixing shoulder or wall 237 that faces and is essentially parallel to a surface of the structural member 214, although other configurations and orientations of the fixing projection 235 and fixing shoulder 237 may be used.
[0048] As shown in Figures 14 and 15, a cable bundle or component 218 is inserted through a grommet portion 220 of a bracket 210 that is positioned in an opening 212 in a structural member 214. The component 218 is positioned against an inner surface 238 of the grommet portion 220 and against the cable support wall 232 of the projection 230. As shown in Figure 15, a portion of a tie or strap 242 is positioned in the mounting opening 240 to properly position and secure the mounting opening 240 relative to the projection 230. The tie or strap 242 is then wrapped around the component 218 and tightened to secure the component 218 to the projection 230 and bracket 210. The tie or strap 242 operates in a known manner, such as, but not limited to, a push mount type tie including a self-locking pin. In another embodiment, the tie or strap 242 is positioned in the mounting opening 240 before the component 218 is positioned against the inner surface 238 of the grommet portion 220 and the cable support wall 32 of the projection 230.
[0049] 16-23, an alternative cable clamp 250 may be used to secure a component to the bracket 210 and structural member 214. In the exemplary embodiment shown, the clamp 250 has a mounting portion 252 and a clamping portion 254. The clamping portion 254 has a fixed clamping arm 256 and a movable clamping arm 258 that pivots about a pivot member 260 between an open position and a closed or clamped position. The movable clamping arm 258 cooperates with a component when the component is positioned between the fixed clamping arm 256 and the movable clamping arm 258 and the movable clamping arm 258 moves to the closed position. The fixed clamping arm 256 extends from and is attached to the mounting portion 252. In the exemplary embodiment, clamp portion 254 is a P-clamp, although other types of clamps may be used. P-clamps are described in U.S. Patent Application Publication Nos. 2018 / 0273500 and 2017 / 0146154, which are incorporated by reference in their entireties.
[0050] The clamping portion 254 may be configured to cooperate with components of different sizes. For example, the clamping portion can have a diameter range of 3.175-6.35 mm, 6.35-9.525 mm, 9.525-12.7 mm, 12.7-15.875 mm, 15.875-19.05 mm, 19.05-22.2 mm, or 22.2-25.4 mm when in the closed or clamped position.
[0051] The mounting portion 252 has a top wall 274, a bottom wall 276, and a side wall 278 extending between the top wall 274 and the bottom wall 276. A protrusion-receiving opening 280 extends through the mounting portion 252 from one side wall 278 to the opposing side wall 278. The opening 280 is dimensioned to receive the protrusion 230 therein. The opening 280 is configured to have a shape similar to, but slightly larger than, the protrusion 230 to allow the protrusion 230 to be inserted into the opening 280 and to prevent unwanted movement of the clamp 250 relative to the bracket 210.
[0052] As shown in Figures 19 and 21, a latch receiving cavity 282 is provided in the bottom wall 276 of the mounting portion 252. The latch receiving cavity 282 extends from one side wall 278 toward or to the opposing side wall 278. An enlarged recess 284 intersects the latch receiving cavity 282 adjacent to one side wall 278. The latch receiving cavity 282 has an opening 286 extending between the latch receiving cavity 282 and the projection receiving opening 280. The opening 286 is positioned adjacent to the opposing side wall 278. The enlarged recess 284 has a projection 285 extending into the recess 284.
[0053] As shown in Figures 19 and 21, a latch mechanism 288 is positioned in the latch-receiving cavity 282. The latch mechanism 288 has a fixed portion engaging end 290 having a latch shoulder or wall 291 and an operator engaging end 292. The latch shoulder 291 of the fixed portion engaging end 290 engages the fixed shoulder 237 of the fixed projection 235 of the projection 230 to securely position and maintain the mounting portion 252 and clamp 250 on the projection 230 of the bracket 210. As will be more fully described, the latch mechanism 288 is configured to rotate in the latch-receiving cavity 282 between a first or unlocked position (shown in Figures 6 and 7) and a second or locked position (shown in Figures 8 and 9).
[0054] In operation, as shown in Figure 16, the clamp 250 is positioned adjacent to the component 218 after the component 218 is inserted through the bracket 210. The clamp 250 is then moved onto the component 218 with the clamp portion 254 in the open position, as shown in Figure 17. In this position, the latch mechanism 288 is in the first or unlocked position.
[0055] The clamp 250 moves toward the structural member 214. As this occurs, the projection 230 of the bracket 210 enters the projection-receiving opening 280 in the mounting portion 252 of the clamp 250, and the clamp can move to the position shown in Figures 18 and 19.
[0056] With the clamp 250 properly positioned on the projection 230, the latch mechanism 288 rotates in the latch-receiving cavity 282 from the unlocked position shown in Figures 18 and 19 to the locked position shown in Figures 20 and 21. As the latch mechanism 288 rotates, a latch shoulder 291 on a fastener engagement end 290 of the latch mechanism 288 moves in the opening 284 from the unlocked position shown in Figure 19 to the locked position shown in Figure 21. In the locked position, the latch shoulder 291 on the fastener engagement end 290 engages the fastener shoulder 237 on the fastener projection 235 of the projection 230. The engagement of the fastener shoulder 237 and the latch shoulder 291 prevents the clamp 250 from being removed from the projection 230 of the bracket 210.
[0057] As the rotation occurs, the operator engagement end 292 of the latch mechanism 288 also moves from the unlocked position shown in FIG. 18 to the locked position shown in FIG. 20. In the locked position, the operator engagement end 292 is positioned within the enlarged recess 284, and the operator engagement end 292 engages and is positioned in frictional engagement with the protrusion 285 extending into the recess 284, thereby providing an interference fit between the operator engagement end 292 and the protrusion 285. The interference fit prevents unwanted movement of the operator engagement end 292 and the latch mechanism 288 from the locked position to the unlocked position, such as, but not limited to, in environments where the clamp 250 and bracket 210 are subject to vibration. Additionally, positioning the operator engagement end 292 in the enlarged recess 284 protects the operator engagement end 292 from inadvertent unwanted engagement. Additionally, positioning of operator engagement end 292 in enlarged recess 284 provides a visual and physical check to ensure that clamp 250 is properly positioned and secured to bracket 210.
[0058] With the clamp 250 properly locked to the bracket 210, the movable clamp arm 258 rotates to a closed position as shown in Figures 22 and 23. In this position, the clamp portion 254 is secured in a closed position, thereby securing the component 218 in the clamp 250.
[0059] An alternative embodiment of the clamp is shown in Figures 24 and 25. In this embodiment, the clamp 350 is larger to accommodate the larger cable or component 318. However, the operation of the clamp 350 is the same as that described with respect to the clamp 250.
[0060] The clamps 250, 350 provide a secure means of clamping components 218, 318, such as cable bundles, in a tool-less, quick-installation manner, reducing the number of parts that need to be stored. Additionally, the latching mechanism 288 ensures that the clamps 250, 350 are secured to the components 218, 318 and bracket 210 and cannot vibrate loose.
[0061] 26, an alternative bracket 410 is shown in an opening 412 in a structural member 414. The bracket 410 may be made of, for example, a polymeric material, a thermoplastic material, a composite material, or a metal. The opening 412 may be a lightening hole or other type of opening. The structural member 414 may be, but is not limited to, a frame or bulkhead of a vehicle, a beam or bulkhead of an aircraft, or a beam of a building. The opening 412 may be formed in a variety of ways, such as by stamping, cutting, punching, etc. The opening 412 has sidewalls or edges that may fray or cut or otherwise damage a component 18 extending through the opening 412. The component 18 may be, but is not limited to, a cable or cable bundle.
[0062] The bracket 410 includes a circular portion or grommet portion 420 that is fastened to a structural member 414 by a fastening member 422, such as, but not limited to, a rivet. The bracket 410 is fastened to the structural member 414 to prevent the bracket 410 from rotating relative to the structural member 414. A flange and structural plate (not shown) are disposed on a first end 424 of the grommet portion 420. The flange cooperates with the structural member 414 to properly position the grommet portion 420 relative to the structural member 414. The structural plate cooperates with the fastening member 422 to hold the grommet portion 420 to the structural member 414. The axis of the opening 412 is perpendicular to the plane of the structural plate. A second end 426 of the grommet portion 420 does not include a flange.
[0063] The grommet portion 420 has a circular transverse cross-section. However, the grommet portion 420 may have other shapes, such as, but not limited to, an oval transverse cross-section, without departing from the scope of the present invention. The outer surface 428 of the grommet portion 420 is shaped and sized to properly fit the opening 412 such that the outer surface 428 is adjacent to or engages a side wall of the opening 412. The circular grommet portion 420 is shaped to fit into the opening 412 of the structural member 414, and the grommet portion 420 is of sufficient length to ensure that the component 418 does not contact the side wall of the structural member 414. The bracket 410 is configured to support the component 418 and protect the component 418 from the side wall or edge of the structural member 414 to which the bracket 410 is mechanically secured.
[0064] A projection or protrusion 430 extends from the second end 426 of the grommet portion 420 in a direction away from the first end 424. The projection 430 has a top or cable support wall 432, an oppositely facing bottom wall 434, and a side wall 436 extending between the cable support wall 432 and the bottom wall 434. The cable support wall 432 is positioned along an inner surface 438 of the grommet portion 420. A mounting opening 440 extends through the projection 430 in a direction essentially parallel to the cable support wall 432. The opening 440 extends through the side wall 436.
[0065] 26-37, an alternative cable clamp or clamps 450 may be used to secure the component 418 to the bracket 410 and structural member 414. In the exemplary embodiment shown, the clamp 450 has a mounting portion 452 and a clamping portion 454. The clamping portion 454 has a fixed clamping arm 456 and a movable clamping arm 458 that pivots about a pivot member 460 between an open position and a closed or clamped position. The movable clamping arm 458 has a compressible or resilient member 462 disposed on an inner portion of the movable clamping arm 458. The compressible or resilient member 462 cooperates with the component 418 when the component 418 is positioned between the fixed clamping arm 456 and the movable clamping arm 458 and when the movable clamping arm 458 moves to the closed position. A fixed clamp arm 456 extends from and is attached to the mounting portion 452. In the exemplary embodiment, the clamp portion 454 is a P-clamp, although other types of clamps may be used. The clamp portion 454 may be configured to cooperate with different sized components. For example, the clamp portion may have a diameter range of 3.175-6.35 mm, 6.35-9.525 mm, 9.525-312.7 mm, 12.7-15.875 mm, 15.875-19.05 mm, 19.05-22.2 mm, or 22.2-25.4 mm when in the closed or clamped position.
[0066] The latch mechanism 464 extends from the movable clamp arm 458 adjacent to the free end of the movable clamp arm 458. The latch mechanism 464 has an attachment engagement end 466 and an operator engagement end 468. The attachment engagement end 466 engages a movable clamp arm engagement portion 470 of the attachment portion 452 to securely position and maintain the movable clamp arm 458 in the closed position.
[0067] The mounting portion 452 has a base 472 including a top wall 474, a bottom wall 476, and a side wall 477 extending between the top wall 474 and the bottom wall 476. A projection receiving opening 478 extends through the base 472 from one side wall 477 to the opposing side wall 477. The opening 478 is dimensioned to receive the projection 430 therein. The opening 478 is configured to have a shape similar to, but slightly larger than, the projection 430 to allow the projection 430 to be inserted into the opening 478 and to prevent unwanted movement of the clamp 450 relative to the bracket 410.
[0068] A recess 480 is provided in the side wall 477. The longitudinal axis of the recess 480 extends in a direction essentially parallel to the plane of the top wall 474. The recess 480 extends from adjacent the opening 478 to adjacent an end wall 482 (FIGS. 33, 35, and 36) of the mounting portion 452.
[0069] 33, 35, and 36, a first recess or cavity 484 is provided in the bottom wall 476. The first cavity 484 is located proximate the end wall 482. A second recess or cavity 486 is provided in the bottom wall 476. The second cavity 486 is spaced from the first cavity 484 and located proximate the opening 478.
[0070] The mounting portion 452 has a slidable locking member 490. The slidable locking member 490 has a top wall 492, a bottom wall 494, and a side wall 496 extending between the top wall 492 and the bottom wall 494.
[0071] A protrusion 500 extends inwardly from each sidewall 496 toward the opposing sidewall 496. Protrusions 500 are dimensioned to be received in recesses 480 in base 472. Protrusions 500 may be dimples or may have other shapes.
[0072] A latch arm 502 is provided on the bottom wall 494. The latch arm 502 has a base 504 attached to the bottom wall 494 and a free end 506. The free end 506 has a latch protrusion 508. The latch arm 502 is configured such that the free end 506 can be elastically displaced relative to the base 504.
[0073] 34, a fixed arm 512 extends from an end wall 510 of the slidable locking member 490. The fixed arm 512 is disposed between the side walls 496. The fixed arm 512 has a free end 514 that is configured to be received in the mounting opening 440 of the projection 430. The fixed arm 512 has a tapered configuration 516 adjacent the end wall 482 to provide structural integrity to the fixed arm 512.
[0074] As shown in FIG 26, in operation, the clamp 450 is positioned adjacent the component 418 after the component 418 is inserted into the bracket 410. The clamp 450 is then moved onto the component 418 with the clamping portion 454 in the open position, as shown in FIG 27. In this position, the slidable locking member 490 is positioned in the unlocked position. As shown in FIG 36 and FIG 37, the slidable locking member 490 is held in the unlocked position by the engagement of the latch protrusion 508 of the latch arm 102 with the first cavity 484 of the bottom wall 476 of the base 472.
[0075] The clamp 450 moves toward the structural member 414. As this occurs, the projection 430 enters the projection-receiving opening 478 in the base 472 of the mounting portion 452 of the clamp 450, and the clamp can move to the position shown in FIG.
[0076] With the clamp 450 properly positioned on the projection 430, the slidable locking member 490 moves from the unlocked position shown in Figures 36 and 37 to the locked position shown in Figures 32, 33, and 34. As the slidable locking member 490 moves, the latch projection 508 of the latch arm 502 moves out of the first cavity 484 in the bottom wall 476 and slides on the bottom wall 476 as shown in Figure 35. As this occurs, the projection 500 of the side wall 496 slides into the recess 480 of the base 472. In addition, the locking arm 512 moves into the mounting opening 440 of the projection 430.
[0077] This continues until the latch protrusion 508 of the latch arm 502 moves into the second cavity 486 and places the slidable locking member 490 in a locked position as shown in Figures 29, 32, 33, and 34. In the locked position as shown in Figure 34, the locking arm 512 is fully inserted into the mounting opening 440 of the protrusion 430, thereby securing the clamp 450 to the bracket 410. The slidable locking member 490 acts as a secondary lock, providing a visual and physical check to ensure that the clamp 450 is properly positioned and secured to the bracket 410.
[0078] With the clamp 450 properly locked to the bracket 410, the movable clamp arm 458 rotates to the closed position as shown in Figure 30. The operator engagement end 468 of the latch mechanism 464 is engaged and the latch mechanism 464 rotates to the position shown in Figure 31. In this position, the clamp portion 454 is secured in the closed position, thereby securing the component 418 in the clamp 450.
[0079] Clamp 450 provides a secure means of clamping components, such as cable bundles, in a tool-less, quick-installation manner, reducing the number of parts that need to be stored. Additionally, slidable locking member 490 ensures that clamp 450 is secured to bracket 410 and cannot vibrate loose.
[0080] The clamp 450 may be installed in the orientation shown or may be rotated 180 degrees. The clamp 450 and bracket 410 are rotatably secured to the structural member 414 when positioned on the bracket 410.
[0081] 38-42, an alternative exemplary bracket 610 is shown. The bracket 610 may be made of, for example, a polymeric material, a thermoplastic material, a composite material, or a metal. The bracket 610 includes a base portion 620. The base portion 620 has a circular transverse cross-section. However, the base portion 620 may have other shapes, such as, but not limited to, an oval transverse cross-section, without departing from the scope of the present invention.
[0082] A projection or protrusion 630 extends from the base portion 620. The projection 630 has a top wall 632, an oppositely facing bottom wall 634, and a side wall 636 extending between the top wall 632 and the bottom wall 634. A mounting opening 640 extends through the projection 630 in a direction essentially parallel to the top wall 632. The opening 640 extends through the side wall 636. Clamps 450 of various sizes can be attached to the projection 630 of the bracket 610. The exemplary clamp 450 shown in Figures 39-42 fits over the projection 630 and operates in a similar manner to the clamp 450 previously described, and therefore will not be described in detail again.
[0083] Although various exemplary brackets are shown, the brackets may have different configurations and be used in different applications without departing from the scope of the present application. Additionally, different configurations of clamps 450 may be used without departing from the scope of the present invention. The brackets and clamps are shown to illustrate a tool-less, hardware-less mounting system that can be quickly installed and secured.
