Description

[Technical field]

[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority based on Korean Patent Application No. 2022-0020203 filed on February 16, 2022, and all contents disclosed in the documents of said Korean patent application are incorporated herein by reference.

[0002] The present invention relates to a battery module containing insulating oil and a battery pack including the same, and more particularly to a battery module that simplifies the structure of the battery module and contains insulating oil injected into a sealed module housing so as to be in direct contact with battery cells, and a battery pack including the same. [Background technology]

[0003] Lithium secondary batteries are used not only as energy sources for wireless mobile devices or wearable devices, which are multifunctional small products, but also as energy sources or power storage devices for electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles, which are presented as alternatives to existing gasoline and diesel vehicles that cause air pollution.

[0004] Lithium secondary batteries become hot during charging and discharging, and the high temperature phenomenon of the battery cells can cause a decrease in the performance of the battery cells. Therefore, to prevent the temperature of the battery cells from rising above a dangerous temperature, components such as heat transfer members, heat sinks, and cooling fins made of materials with high thermal conductivity are provided in the battery pack to dissipate the heat of the battery cells to the outside of the battery pack.

[0005] However, such a method of indirectly cooling the battery cells has limitations in terms of improving the cooling performance.

[0006] In addition, since the conventional battery pack is configured to include a large number of metal parts, the assembly process is complicated and the weight is heavy. In this regard, FIG 1 is an exploded perspective view of a conventional battery pack.

[0007] Referring to FIG. 1, the battery pack includes battery modules 10, cross beams 30 positioned between the battery modules 10, a pack tray 40 on which the battery modules 10 and the cross beams 30 are mounted, a lower cover 70 positioned below the pack tray 40, a pack frame 50 arranged to surround the periphery of the battery modules 10, a cooling member 60 for cooling the battery modules, and a pack cover 20 positioned on the battery modules 10.

[0008] Conventionally, parts such as a cross beam 30, a pack tray 40, a pack frame 50, a pack cover 20, and a bottom cover 70 were required to protect the battery modules 10 inside a battery pack from external impacts and ensure safety.

[0009] However, the weight of these components reduces the energy density of the battery pack.

[0010] Therefore, there is a need for technology that can simplify battery pack components to reduce weight and increase energy density, as well as improve the cooling efficiency of the battery cells.

[0011] In this regard, Patent Document 1 discloses a battery module that contains insulating oil and a number of battery cells. Since the battery cells are completely immersed in the insulating oil, it is possible to prevent the temperature of the battery cells from rising suddenly. However, the battery module of Patent Document 1 includes a heat pipe for absorbing the heat of the insulating oil when the temperature of the insulating oil rises, and a heat dissipation block and cooling fins for discharging the absorbed heat.

[0012] Therefore, no technology has been presented for realizing a battery pack with high energy density.

[0013] As lithium secondary batteries are used as large-capacity, high-output energy sources, there is a need for a technology for a battery module that ensures a cooling effect of the battery cells to improve safety and has a high energy density. [Prior art documents] [Patent documents]

[0036] Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which a person having ordinary skill in the art to which the present invention pertains can easily carry out the present invention. However, in describing the operation principle of the preferred embodiment of the present invention in detail, detailed description of related well-known functions or configurations will be omitted if it is determined that such detailed description may unnecessarily obscure the gist of the present invention.

[0037] In addition, the same reference numerals are used throughout the drawings for parts having similar functions and actions. Throughout the specification, when a part is said to be connected to another part, this includes not only the case where the part is directly connected to another part, but also the case where the part is indirectly connected via another element between the two parts. In addition, when a part includes a certain component, it does not mean that the other component is excluded, but that the part may further include the other component, unless otherwise specified.

[0038] Furthermore, descriptions that limit or add specific elements are applicable to all inventions and are not limited to a particular invention unless otherwise specified.

[0039] Furthermore, throughout the description of the present invention and the claims, the singular includes the plural unless otherwise stated.

[0040] In addition, throughout the description of the present invention and the claims, unless otherwise specified, "or" includes "and." Therefore, "including A or B" means three cases: including A, including B, or including both A and B.

[0041] The invention will now be explained with reference to the drawings and in conjunction with detailed embodiments.

[0042] FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a battery module according to the present invention, and FIG. 3 is a plan view perspective view showing a state in which a plurality of battery modules are connected via an HV connector.

[0043] 2 and 3, the battery module according to the present invention includes a battery cell stack 100 composed of a plurality of battery cells, a module housing 200 accommodating two battery cell stacks 100 arranged side by side along an overall length direction L, an HV connector 300 for electrically connecting the battery module, an LV assembly 400 for sensing the voltage and temperature of the plurality of battery cells, insulating oil 600 for cooling the plurality of battery cells, and a cooling port 500 for the inflow and outflow of the insulating oil 600.

[0044] The LV assembly 400 can be configured in various ways depending on the configuration of the battery module, and is not limited by the types of components constituting the LV assembly as long as it is configured to connect the battery cell stack and the BMS to sense the voltage and temperature of the battery cells.

[0045] For example, the LV assembly may include a bus bar connected to an electrode lead of a battery cell stack, a flexible printed circuit (FPC) coupled to the bus bar, a printed circuit board (PCB) coupled to the FPC, a cell management controller (CMC) coupled to the PCB, and a low voltage connector (LV connector) coupled to the CMC.

[0046] The BMS can manage the battery cells to prevent overcharging and maintain a uniform voltage, and the BDU can perform the function of stably supplying power to the battery cells or cutting off the power.

[0047] The configuration of the PCB and CMC can be seen in FIG.

[0048] A plurality of battery modules constituting a battery pack are connected to each other through an LV line connected to an LV connector, and the LV line is connected to a BMS. Since the battery cell stack and the BMS are connected through the LV assembly in this manner, it is possible to sense the voltage and temperature of the battery cells and to control and manage them.

[0049] In the present invention, insulating oil 600 is injected into the interior of the module housing through the cooling port 500, so that the insulating oil 600 can come into direct contact with the battery cells. Therefore, when low-temperature insulating oil is injected into the interior of the module housing, the insulating oil flows inside the module housing and can directly cool a plurality of battery cells, so that cooling efficiency can be significantly improved compared to indirectly cooling the battery cells using conventional heat transfer members and cooling fins.

[0050] As described above, since the present invention is structured so that insulating oil is injected into and discharged from the inside of the module housing through the cooling port, the remaining parts except for the cooling port must be sealed to prevent leakage of insulating oil.

[0051] Therefore, as the parts to be coupled to the module housing, the HV connector 300, the LV assembly 400, and the cooling port 500 may be coupled with a sealing member to prevent leakage of insulating oil. For example, the HV connector 300, the LV assembly 400, and the cooling port 500 may be coupled to the module housing with O-rings attached.

[0052] The module housing 200 has a monoframe structure in which the four rectangular sides are arranged perpendicular to each other, and includes an upper surface 231, a lower surface 232, a first side surface 233 and a second side surface 234, and the HV connector 300 includes a first HV connector 300a located on the first side surface 233 and a second HV connector 300b located on the second side surface 234.

[0053] The present invention can be arranged so that two battery cell stacks are positioned along the entire length of a module housing having a long overall length, and the battery module of FIG. 3 includes a first battery cell stack 110 and a second battery cell stack 120.

[0054] An HV bus bar is disposed in the center of the module housing in the overall length direction, in the space where the first battery cell stack 110 and the second battery cell stack 120 face each other, and the first electrode terminal and the second electrode terminal of each battery cell stack extend in the direction of the HV bus bar and are coupled to the HV bus bar.

[0055] Specifically, the first electrode terminal 111 of the first battery cell stack 110 and the second electrode terminal 122 of the second battery cell stack 120 are connected to the first HV connector 300a, and the second electrode terminal 112 of the first battery cell stack 110 and the first electrode terminal 121 of the second battery cell stack 120 are connected to the second HV connector 300b, so that the first electrode terminal and the second electrode terminal can be connected to the HV connector via the HV bus bar.

[0056] The first electrode terminals 111 and 121 are formed by connecting electrode leads of first electrodes constituting a battery cell stack, and the second electrode terminals 112 and 122 are formed by connecting electrode leads of second electrodes constituting a battery cell stack. The first and second electrodes have different polarities and may be anode and cathode or cathode and anode, respectively.

[0057] In the present invention, a plurality of battery modules constituting a battery pack may be disposed adjacent to each other and electrically connected to each other. For example, when a first battery module 701 and a second battery module 702 are positioned adjacent to each other, the first battery module 701 and the second battery module 702 may be electrically connected to each other via the HV connector 300. That is, the electrical connection may be achieved by directly connecting the second HV connector 300b of the first battery module 701 to the first HV connector 300a of the second battery module 702.

[0058] Therefore, the second HV connector 300b of the first battery module 701 and the first HV connector 300a of the second battery module 702 can be positioned adjacent to each other so that the second HV connector 300b of the first battery module 701 and the first HV connector 300a of the second battery module 702 can be directly connected to each other.

[0059] Unlike those shown in Figures 2 and 3, if the HV connectors are arranged to be located at both ends of the module housing in the overall length direction L, the configuration for connecting the electrode terminals of the two battery modules may become complicated, resulting in an inefficient configuration.

[0060] The present invention does not include components such as an upper cover and a lower cover of a battery pack on the outside of the upper surface 231 and the lower surface 232 of the module housing 200, so that the upper surface 231 and the lower surface 232 of the module housing are exposed when the battery pack is assembled.

[0061] In addition, the first HV connector 300a and the second HV connector 300b are disposed to penetrate the module housing 200 and are attached to the module housing 200, and the portion where the first HV connector 300a and the second HV connector 300b are disposed must be completely sealed. Therefore, after the first HV connector 300a and the second HV connector 300b are coupled to the first electrode terminals and the second electrode terminals, the battery cell stack cannot be accommodated in the module housing.

[0062] Therefore, in the present invention, the battery cell stack is housed in the module housing, and the first and second HV connectors 300a and 300b are inserted from the outside to the inside of the module housing, and the first and second electrode terminals are coupled to each other at the coupling portion between the first and second HV connectors 300a and 300b. For this operation, a through hole 210 is formed in the lower surface 232 of the module housing 200 at a lower portion of a coupling portion where the first and second HV connectors 300a and 300b are coupled to the first and second battery cell stacks 110 and 120.

[0063] A first electrode terminal and a second electrode terminal are coupled to the coupling portion of the first HV connector 300a and the coupling portion of the second HV connector 300b through the through hole 210, and after the coupling is completed, a screw 221 is coupled to a sealing member 220 covering the through hole 210, thereby sealing the through hole 210.

[0064] FIG. 4 is a partially enlarged view of the HV connector of FIG.

[0065] 4, the first HV connector shown in (a) is a male connector, and the second HV connector shown in (b) is a female connector, and they are connected to each other. Therefore, when multiple battery modules are arranged side by side, the first HV connector of any one battery module can be coupled to the second HV connector of the adjacent battery module to electrically connect them.

[0066] 5 is an exploded perspective view of a portion of the battery module of FIG. 2, and FIG. 6 is a perspective view of a portion of the battery module of FIG.

[0067] 5 and 6, a PCB 240 is attached to one end of a battery cell stack accommodated inside a module housing 200, thereby making it possible to measure and manage the voltage and temperature of the battery cells. Sealing plates 250 are coupled to both ends of the module housing 200 in the overall length direction to prevent leakage of insulating oil, and end plates 260 are coupled to the outer sides of the sealing plates 250.

[0068] The sealing plate 250 includes a PCB joint 251 connected to the PCB 240 , and a CMC 252 connected to the PCB joint 251 is located between the sealing plate 250 and an end plate 260 .

[0069] The CMC is connected to a PCB connected to a battery cell to measure the voltage and temperature of the battery cell, and is connected to the CMCs of other battery modules as well as to the BMS.

[0070] A CMC cover 253 is coupled to the outer side of the CMC 252 so as to cover the CMC 252 , and the CMC cover 253 protrudes to the outer side of the end plate 260 through a through hole of the end plate 260 .

[0071] However, depending on the design of the battery module, the LV assembly can be configured to omit the CMC, and in this case, it can still be connected to the BMS via the LV line connected to the LV connector.

[0072] The LV assembly 400 is configured to connect the battery cells constituting the battery cell stack to the BMS, and is configured by sequentially connecting the bus bars 130 connected to the battery cells, the FPC 241, the PCB 240, the CMC 252, and the LV connector 410. The LV connector 410 includes a terminal portion 411 and a terminal portion cover 412 to which the terminal portion 411 is attached, and the LV connector 410 is coupled to the CMC 252 with the terminal portion 411 attached to the terminal portion cover 412.

[0073] However, the configuration of the LV assembly 400 may be different from that shown in FIGS. 5 and 6 depending on the configuration of the battery module, and may be configured to omit at least one of the FPC, PCB, and CMC, provided that the battery cell stack and the BMS are connected to each other so as to sense the voltage and temperature of the battery cells.

[0074] The CMC cover 253 is coupled to the CMC so as to surround the CMC 252 and the LV connector 410, and seals the coupling portion of the LV connector 410 inside the module housing. In detail, by coupling the CMC cover 253 to the CMC with an O-ring attached, leakage of insulating oil can be prevented.

[0075] FIG. 7 is an enlarged view of a portion of the battery module of FIG. 2 to which the cooling port 500 is coupled.

[0076] 7, cooling port 500 is primarily coupled to a cooling port mounting portion formed on end plate 260, and then rotated 90 degrees to complete the coupling. Cooling line 510 is coupled to cooling port 500 coupled in this manner, allowing injection and discharge of insulating oil. In the case where multiple battery modules are coupled, insulating oil can be injected and discharged from the multiple battery modules along cooling line 510.

[0077] Alternatively, the cooling port may be configured such that a portion of the cooling port is connected to a cooling port mounting portion of the end plate and a cooling line is connected to the cooling port. For example, a quick connector may be used as the cooling port.

[0078] FIG. 8 is a perspective view of a multiple battery module according to the present invention.

[0079] Referring to FIG. 8, four battery modules 700 are shown arranged side by side, and although the four battery modules 700 are shown spaced apart, the battery modules 700 can be arranged in close contact by being connected by the HV connector 300.

[0080] A cooling line 510 is connected to the cooling port 500, and insulating oil flows in from the same side of the four battery modules 700, passes through the inside of the battery modules in the direction of the dotted arrow, and flows to the discharge part on the opposite side of the inlet, and the insulating oil is discharged through the discharge part.

[0081] However, since the flow of insulating oil can be changed depending on the method of forming the cooling line, the inlet and outlet flow paths of the insulating oil can be configured to have at least one of a series connection and a parallel connection between the plurality of battery modules.

[0082] In addition, the plurality of battery modules are connected to an LV connector 400 coupled to all the battery cell stacks, and one end of the LV connector 400 is connected to the BMS.

[0083] FIG. 9 is a front view of a module housing according to one embodiment, and FIG. 10 is a front view of a module housing according to another embodiment.

[0084] 9 and 10, the upper surface 231 and the lower surface 232 of the module housing have a structure having a space 235 therein. This structure having a space can reduce weight. In addition, the rigidity of the module housing can be secured by forming a partition wall 236 therein. Therefore, a battery pack can be configured without a separate battery pack cover and a battery pack lower cover.

[0085] Such module housings may be formed by extrusion and may be made from materials such as aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel and alloys thereof.

[0086] The battery cell stack may repeatedly expand and contract in volume during charging and discharging. In order to absorb the volume expansion of the battery cell stack, at least one of the first side surface 233 and the second side surface 234 includes a buffer structure 237.

[0087] The module housing includes screw fastening portions on a first side 233 and a second side 234, and a plurality of battery modules can be stably fixed together by screws 201 coupled to the screw fastening portions.

[0088] FIG. 11 is a perspective view of a battery pack according to the present invention.

[0089] 11, a battery pack 1000 includes a plurality of battery modules 700 arranged with side surfaces of module housings adjacent to each other, a BDU 900 arranged on one side of the plurality of battery modules 700, and a battery pack frame 800 surrounding the plurality of battery modules 700 and the BDU 900. The plurality of battery modules 700 are electrically connected to adjacent battery modules 700 via HV connectors, and the BDU 900 is connected to the HV connectors of the adjacent battery modules 700.

[0090] When the plurality of battery modules 700 are mounted on the battery pack frame 800, the upper and lower surfaces of the module housing 200 are exposed.

[0091] The battery pack frame 800 has connection openings 810 formed at positions corresponding to the HV connectors and LV connectors attached to the multiple battery modules 700 .

[0092] The battery pack frame 800 may be composed of a first member 821, a second member 822, a third member 823, and a fourth member 824 that are vertically connected to each other, and the first member 821, the second member 822, the third member 823, and the fourth member 824 may be composed of separate members that can be separated and combined with each other.

[0093] Additionally, the first member 821, the second member 822, the third member 823, and the fourth member 824 may include an attachment portion for attachment to a device.

[0094] Those skilled in the art will appreciate that various applications and modifications within the scope of the present invention will be possible based on the above content. [Explanation of symbols]
