Mode for Carrying Out the Invention

[0006] Raw tobacco is defined as raw as long as it is derived from the reduced portion of dried tobacco (iron pipe drying, air drying, sun drying, heat drying). It can be a tobacco blend containing different tobacco species without casing and flavor. To summarize this description, tobacco powder, fragments, pieces, whole leaves, stems, etc. should be included.

[0007] A reducing sugar content of at least 4% by weight of raw tobacco ensures sufficient reducing sugar in the liquid tobacco product for the caramelization reaction. The caramelization reaction changes the reducing sugar from raw tobacco to caramelized sugar. With the caramelized sugar, the desired sweetness of the tobacco product is achieved. While mixing raw tobacco with a first solvent and leaching with the first solvent, soluble substances such as nicotine, other alkaloids, flavor substances, sugars, and reducing sugars are released from the raw tobacco and dissolved in the first solvent. The removal of the tobacco material removes only the solid components remaining together with the substances insoluble in the first solvent. The remaining liquid means the leached tobacco liquid.

[0008] When heating the leached tobacco liquid, at least a portion of the first solvent evaporates. After evaporation of the first solvent, the tobacco product may still contain a certain level of the first solvent. Preferably, the content of the first solvent in the tobacco product after evaporation of the first solvent is from 0 to 20% by weight. During the heating process, the leached tobacco liquid is thickened and concentrated. This gives a tobacco product with a texture like honey. Also, the taste is enhanced. Due to the natural tobacco components and caramelized sugars, the desired natural and sweet profiles are achieved without any additives. The texture like honey is desirable for easy processing in several different products. Also, this tobacco product with a texture like honey means a concentrated product that allows for more effective storage and transportation. The tobacco product is water-soluble.

[0009] According to another embodiment, the first solvent is water and the leached tobacco liquid is heated at 100°C to 190°C. At a given temperature, since they are above the boiling point of water (100°C), the water can evaporate. Depending on the reducing sugar type contained in the leached tobacco liquid, different temperatures may be required to facilitate the caramelization reaction. The caramelization temperatures for different sugar types are as follows: · Fructose: 110°C (reducing sugar) · Galactose: 160°C (reducing sugar) · Glucose: 160°C (reducing sugar) · Sucrose: 160°C (non-reducing sugar) · Maltose: 180°C (reducing sugar).

[0010] Preferably, the leached tobacco liquid is heated to at least 110°C. Alternatively, the leached tobacco liquid is heated to at least 160°C. The leached tobacco liquid is also heated to at least 180°C. While the other two embodiments only allow for some caramelization of the sugars, the latter will allow for all of the sugars contained in the liquid tobacco product to be caramelized. By choosing the heating temperature, the taste profile can be adjusted. During the heating process, the Maillard reaction can occur in parallel with the caramelization reaction with reducing sugars. This typically occurs at a temperature of 140 - 165°C.

[0011] According to another embodiment, the raw tobacco contains a maximum content of 30% by weight of reducing sugars. This reducing sugar content ensures a desired amount of sweetness in the ready-made tobacco product. Preferably, the raw tobacco contains a reducing sugar content of 7 - 10% by weight. This reducing sugar content provides an optimal taste profile. Less than 4% by weight of the reducing sugars in the raw tobacco results in a significantly lower caramel sweetness being perceivable in the final product, which is undesirable as the sweetness of the final product is very important to achieve the desired taste profile.

[0012] Preferred embodiments of the ready-made tobacco product contain at least 1.5 - 6% by weight of nicotine, 6 - 15% of sugar and 14 - 20% of water.

[0013] Preferably, the raw tobacco is Virginia tobacco or an American blend tobacco mixture. The American blend tobacco mixture typically contains flue-cured Virginia tobacco, Oriental tobacco, and Burley tobacco. Virginia tobacco contains high sugar levels. American blend tobacco contains medium sugar levels. Both thus provide the desired sugar content in the raw tobacco. By using different tobacco types or blends, different taste profiles of tobacco products can be achieved. By using Virginia tobacco or a blend thereof, a tobacco product with a caramel sweet taste profile can be obtained. By using an American blend tobacco mixture, a more fragrant and licorice-like taste profile can be obtained. However, any tobacco type or blend with a reducing sugar content of at least 4% by weight is applicable to the present invention. Preferably, the tobacco can be Virginia tobacco, Burley tobacco, Oriental tobacco, shade tobacco, white Burley tobacco, wild tobacco, Latakia tobacco, bright leaf tobacco, fire-cured tobacco, flue-cured tobacco, air-cured tobacco, sun-cured tobacco, Perique tobacco, Cavendish tobacco, Criollo tobacco, and / or Dohata tobacco. Most preferably, the tobacco type or blend contains a reducing sugar content of 20% by weight or more, for example 24% by weight.

[0014] Preferably, the raw tobacco contains different parts of tobacco plant material. The raw tobacco can include whole tobacco leaves, cut tobacco leaves, tobacco stems, tobacco pieces, tobacco dust, tobacco fragments, tobacco powder, and tobacco dust, where the latter can be a by-product of tobacco cut filler production. This increases the yield from the tobacco plant material.

[0015] According to another embodiment, the raw tobacco has a maximum particle size of 20 mm. Preferably, the maximum particle size is 2 mm, most preferably 1 mm. This upper limit for the particle size ensures optimal extraction of soluble substances during leaching because a smaller particle size increases the total surface area of the raw tobacco, which promotes the interaction between the raw tobacco and the first solvent and enhances the extraction efficiency. Preferably, the raw tobacco is crushed to obtain the desired particle size.

[0016] According to another embodiment, the mixture of raw tobacco and the first solvent contains at least 10% by weight of raw tobacco. By using at least 10% by weight of raw tobacco, a sufficient concentration of soluble substances is provided in the leached tobacco liquid. Preferably, the mixture contains 11 - 17% by weight of raw tobacco. The resulting mixture preferably has a pulp-like consistency. This is an optimal value for the leaching process.

[0017] According to another embodiment, the leaching of the raw tobacco with the first solvent lasts for at least 10 minutes, preferably 20 minutes, and most preferably 1 hour before the tobacco material is removed. This time period ensures sufficient extraction of soluble substances from the raw tobacco into the first solvent. Preferably, the raw tobacco is leached with the first solvent at a warm temperature. Preferably, the warm temperature is 65°C. Leaching at a warm temperature can reduce the leaching time while obtaining the same extraction efficiency as a longer leaching time at room temperature.

[0018] According to another embodiment, the tobacco material is removed by filtration. Filtration is very easy to apply in the process steps. It can be easily adjusted to a specific process. The pore size of the filter is selectable. This makes it possible to adjust the filtration result according to the process requirements.

[0019] According to another embodiment, the viscosity of the caramelized tobacco product is between 10 Pa.s and 100 Pa.s at 60 °C. This viscosity was measured using a Rheometer MCR 101 (Anton Paar) at a shear rate of 50 l / s. These viscosity values provide a texture like that of syrup, jam, and / or honey.

[0020] The object of the present invention is also achieved by a method for preparing a tobacco liquid solution, which includes a step of mixing a caramelized tobacco product manufactured according to any of the above methods with a second solvent. By mixing the tobacco product with the second solvent, the viscosity can be adapted to suit different manufacturing processes. The mixing with the second solvent is carried out independently of the tobacco product manufacturing and can be adjusted according to any subsequent manufacturing process. This ensures the versatility of the tobacco product. The tobacco liquid solution is aerosolizable.

[0021] Preferably, the second solvent includes water, or propylene glycol, or glycerol, or a combination thereof. These types of second solvents are very natural and harmless substances that do not impair the naturalness of the tobacco product.

[0022] According to another embodiment, the caramelized tobacco product is diluted with the second solvent at a ratio of 1:1 to 1:20. By this dilution, a tobacco liquid solution is obtained. These dilution ratios have the effect of making the diluted tobacco product optimally atomizable when used in an aerosol generating device. When used in an aerosol generating device, the tobacco liquid solution is aerosolized. This implies that the tobacco product contained together with all its components is also aerosolized. Preferably, the second solvent includes 60% by weight of propylene glycol and 40% by weight of glycerol. Preferably, this embodiment of the second solvent is mixed with the caramelized tobacco product, where the amount of the tobacco product in the tobacco liquid solution is at most 20% by weight. In this way, the solubility limit is not exceeded. Preferably, the tobacco liquid solution contains 5 - 10% by weight of the tobacco product.

[0023] A 5% tobacco product mixed with a solution of 40% by weight of propylene glycol and 60% by weight can achieve a pleasant taste with a high smoking volume. The smoking taste texture is milder in an almond atmosphere. There is no leakage at all in the aerosol generating device. A 10% tobacco product mixed with a solution of 40% by weight of propylene glycol and 60% by weight of glycerol can obtain a stronger taste. The taste reminds one of sweetened dark-roasted espresso. The smoking taste texture is creamy throughout the body and may be slightly throat-irritating.

[0024] According to another embodiment, the total sugar content is included in the tobacco liquid solution at 15 - 75% by weight. Only at this sugar content in the tobacco liquid solution can the desired taste be achieved. Less than 15% by weight of the sugar in this liquid results in a significantly lower caramel sweetness being perceivable in the final product, which is undesirable as the sweetness of the final product is very important for achieving the desired taste profile. Preferably, the sugar content in this liquid is more than 25% by weight. This ensures sufficient sweetness in the final product.

[0025] This object is also achieved by a tobacco liquid solution containing a mixture of a tobacco product and a second solvent, where this liquid contains caramelized sugar and has a total sugar content of 15 - 75% by weight of the tobacco liquid solution. The tobacco liquid solution includes all of the advantages already described, along with an excellent sweet and natural tobacco taste. The tobacco liquid solution contains no additives. When aerosolized in an aerosol generating device, it provides a full volume and an immediate vaping effect. The aerosolized tobacco liquid solution provides a naturally balanced tobacco taste with an enhanced roasted atmosphere.

[0026] According to another embodiment, the tobacco liquid solution further comprises one or more components selected from the group consisting of alkaloids, essential oils, and combinations thereof. Nicotine as an alkaloid is, therefore, also included. These substances are naturally derived from raw tobacco during the leaching process. Alternatively, such natural substances can also be added to the liquid tobacco solution to further adjust the taste profile.

[0027] This object is also achieved by an aerosolizable product for an aerosol-generating device containing a tobacco liquid solution obtained by any of the above methods. The aerosol-generating device can be a liquid sprayer that atomizes liquid droplets at ambient temperature or an atomizer that evaporates the aerosol at the evaporation temperature of a second solvent. The aerosolizable product makes available the excellent natural and sweet tobacco taste of tobacco products for use with any aerosol-generating device. There is a great demand for natural tobacco flavors and natural products, especially for aerosolizable products, as opposed to widely available aerosolizable products containing artificial flavorings. Preferably, the aerosolizable product also further comprises natural flavoring substances. Preferably, the natural flavoring substances are eugenol and / or menthol. In this way, the characteristic taste of eugenol- or menthol-containing cigarettes can be mimicked with the aerosolizable product. Preferably, the eugenol content is from 1 to 8% by weight, most preferably about 6% by weight.

[0028] The object of the present invention is also achieved by an aerosolizable product for an aerosol generating device containing a tobacco product obtained by any of the above methods. The aerosol generating device in this embodiment can be a liquid sprayer that atomizes liquid droplets at ambient temperature, an atomizer that evaporates the aerosol at the evaporation temperature of the second solvent, or a non-combustion heating device (T-vape) for an aerosolizable product containing reconstituted tobacco (RTB) together with a certain amount of tobacco product or as a main component in a porous flavor bag. It can be used as an additive together with RTB. Also, tobacco mousse can be mixed with the tobacco product, preferably in a ratio of 10:1, most preferably 5:1. For example, 20 g of mousse and 5 g of tobacco product can be mixed to obtain tobacco mousse. The tobacco foam or mousse is described, for example, in International Patent Publication No. WO 2018 / 122375. It can include a tobacco component-containing agent and / or an inhalable agent, an aerosol forming agent, a foam stabilizer, and a foam forming agent. The weight of the tobacco component can be 0.1 to 33% by weight of the weight of the foam, and the weight of the aerosol forming agent can be 10 to 80% by weight, preferably 40 to 70% by weight of the weight of the foam.

[0029] The use of tobacco products in a non-combustion heating device (T-Vape) is very advantageous. It provides a full volume and an immediate vaping effect to the natural tobacco taste. Also, the nicotine to TPM (total particulate matter) per dose is high compared to conventional cigarettes. The use of tobacco mousse containing tobacco products realizes an improvement in taste and vape delivery.

[0030] This object is also achieved by a smoking article containing a tobacco product obtained by any of the methods described above. The smoking article containing the tobacco product includes an enhanced tobacco taste and an excellent taste profile of a sweet aroma. By using the tobacco product, the smoking article can be effectively flavored without using artificial flavoring agents. The whole product is flavored but does not contain any artificially made additives and remains a completely natural product.

[0031] This object is also achieved by a snus or chewing article containing a tobacco product obtained by any of the methods described above. This again emphasizes the versatility of the tobacco product. Using the tobacco product, the snus or chewing article can be flavored in a natural and effective way without the need for artificial flavoring agents that provide a natural and sweet tobacco taste.

[0032] The tobacco product obtained by any of the methods described above can also be used as a natural taste enhancer for cigarettes or other tobacco materials, as a natural taste enhancer for non-tobacco materials, as an insect repellent, in foams, in candies, in chewing gums, in smoking cessation sprays or as lipstick in T-vape sticks, T-vape rings, T-vape chips, in non-combustion heating type products. The tobacco product can also be used to flavor tobacco in a primary process or a secondary process.

[0033] The present invention further relates to a tobacco product as described above for use in an aerosol generating device containing caramelized sugar and having a texture like syrup, like jam and / or like honey. For example, this product can be wrapped in porous paper. Preferably, this arrangement can be used in a non-combustion heating type device.

[0034] In the present application, a reducing sugar is any sugar that can act as a reducing agent because it has a free aldehyde group or a free ketone group. A reducing sugar is a monosaccharide. Total sugars refer to reducing sugars, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides.

[0035] Caramelization refers to the browning reaction of sugar obtained by heating or passing through fire, which produces polymers such as caramelan, caramelen, and caramelin that cause the caramel flavor, and also produces volatile compounds such as diacetyl and hydroxymethylfurfural.

[0036] Further advantages, objectives, and features of the present invention are described below by way of example only in connection with the accompanying drawings. In the drawings, like components in different embodiments can be denoted by the same reference numerals.

[0037] FIG. 1 shows a schematic diagram of the process flow of a method for preparing a tobacco product 20. The raw tobacco 2 contains a reducing sugar with a minimum content of 4% by weight and preferably a maximum content of 30% by weight. Preferably, the raw tobacco has a maximum particle size of 20 mm, preferably 2 mm, and most preferably 1 mm.

[0038] In the first step, raw tobacco 2 is provided. In the subsequent mixing step 7, this raw tobacco 2 is mixed with a first solvent 9 to obtain a tobacco-solvent mixture 8. The first solvent 9 is preferably water. The tobacco-solvent mixture 8 preferably contains at least 10% by weight of raw tobacco 2.

[0039] The obtained tobacco-solvent mixture 8 is then leached in a leaching step 10 for at least 10 minutes. Preferably, the tobacco-solvent mixture 8 is leached for 20 minutes, and even more preferably for 1 hour. The leaching step 10 may include heating the tobacco-solvent mixture 8 to 65°C. The leaching step can also be carried out at ambient temperature or at a temperature between ambient temperature and 65°C.

[0040] After the leaching step 10, the tobacco material 2a is removed from the tobacco-solvent mixture 8 in the removal step 12. The tobacco material 2a mainly means insoluble solid components. The soluble components of the raw tobacco 2 or at least most of them dissolve in the first solvent 9. In the removal step 12, a leached tobacco liquid 14 is obtained. The leached tobacco liquid 14 contains the first solvent 9 and the soluble components of the raw tobacco 2.

[0041] The leached tobacco liquid 14 is then heated in the subsequent heating step 16. The leached tobacco liquid 14 is heated to 100 to 190 °C. In this way, the first solvent 9a can be evaporated. Of course, this evaporation of the first solvent 9a does not necessarily include the complete evaporation of the first solvent 9 present in the leached tobacco liquid. Preferably, only a part 9a of the first solvent evaporates in the heating step 16, where the second part of the first solvent remains unevaporated. Alternatively, it is also possible to completely evaporate the first solvent from the leached tobacco liquid 14. In this case, the second part 9b of the first solvent does not exist, and the evaporated part 9a of the first solvent is equal to the total amount of the first solvent 9. By performing the heating step 16 with the evaporation of the first solvent 9a, a concentrated tobacco liquid 17 is obtained.

[0042] The concentrated tobacco liquid 17 is then further heated in the caramelization step 18. In the caramelization step 18, the concentrated tobacco liquid 17 is heated until the caramelization reaction starts. The concentrated tobacco liquid 17 is then further heated until the caramelization reaction occurs to a desired extent. Depending on the temperature at which the concentrated tobacco liquid 17 is heated, only certain sugars undergo the caramelization reaction while other sugars can remain un-caramelized. In this caramelization step 18, a tobacco product 20 is formed. The caramelization step 18 changes the taste profile of the tobacco product 20 compared to the concentrated tobacco liquid 17 in terms of adding caramel sweetness to the tobacco product 20. The caramelization step 18 further changes the texture of the tobacco product 20 compared to the concentrated tobacco liquid 17. The resulting tobacco product 20 includes textures such as syrupy, jam-like and / or honey-like. The tobacco product 20 has a viscosity of 10 - 100 Pa·s measured at 60°C.

[0043] Figure 2 shows a schematic diagram of an alternative process flow of a method for preparing the tobacco product 20 and the liquid tobacco solution 22.

[0044] The raw tobacco 2 is obtained by selection and / or mixing of at least one type of tobacco 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e. When two or more types of tobacco 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e are selected, the different types of tobacco are mixed in a desired ratio to form the raw tobacco 2. The different types of tobacco 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e can include different species of tobacco plants, differently dried tobacco types, other different forms of tobacco types and / or different parts of the tobacco plants.

[0045] Before the step 7 of mixing the raw tobacco 2 with the first solvent 9, the raw tobacco 2 can be crushed in the crushing step 4. This results in the crushed raw tobacco 6. In the crushing step, a desired maximum particle size can be ensured. The crushed raw tobacco can then be subjected to exactly the same manufacturing method of the tobacco product 20 as the raw tobacco 2.

[0046] The removal step 12 can be a filtration step. Alternatively, the removal step 12 can be a pressing step. When the concentrated tobacco liquid is subjected to the caramelization step 18, the Maillard reaction 19 can occur simultaneously.

[0047] A tobacco product 20 can be used to produce a tobacco liquid solution 22. To do so, the tobacco product 20 obtained by any of the above processes is mixed with a second solvent 24. The second solvent 24 includes water, propylene glycol and / or glycerol. The tobacco product 20 is diluted with the second solvent 24 at a ratio of 1:1 to 1:20. The resulting tobacco liquid solution 22 is aerosolizable. The tobacco liquid solution 22 contains a total sugar content of 15 to 75% by weight. The tobacco liquid solution 22 contains caramelized sugar. It further contains alkaloids (preferably nicotine) and / or essential oils.
