Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to drug delivery devices, more specifically, to automatic injector devices for delivering drugs.

Background Art

[0002] With the progress of technology, various injection devices such as manual injection devices and automatic injector devices are being adopted to administer drugs for applications such as medical treatment, therapy, diagnosis, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, etc. Today, users and medical professionals are increasingly inclined to use automatic injector devices to administer drugs. One significant reason for this trend is that the amount of training required to use automatic injector devices is significantly reduced.

[0003] Generally, an automatic injector device includes a pre-filled syringe or cartridge filled with a specific amount of drug to be delivered to the user. The amount of drug filled in the automatic injector device depends on various parameters such as the type of drug and the user's medical condition. Currently, an automatic injector device can only be configured to carry a specific amount of drug and cannot provide a preparation for changing the amount of drug without changing the structural or operational characteristics of various sub-components of the automatic injector device.

[0004] Therefore, this may significantly reduce the overall reusability of automatic injector devices for administering different types and dosages of drugs. Furthermore, the type and dosage of the drug to be administered may act as design constraints on the manufacture of automatic injector devices. For example, the sub-components of an automatic injector device need to be manufactured based on the type of drug and the corresponding dosage of such drug administered through the automatic injector device. This may significantly increase the overall manufacturing cost of the automatic injector device. [Overview of the Initiative]

[0018] Figure 1 shows an auto-injector device 100 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure, and steps involved in the implementation of the auto-injector device 100 for delivering a medicament. In one embodiment, the auto-injector device 100 may be used to deliver a medicament (alternatively referred to as a drug) to a patient. The auto-injector device 100 may include a proximal end 102 and a distal end 104. Further, the auto-injector device 100 may include a cap 106 removably attached to the distal end 104 of the auto-injector device 100. The cap 106 may be provided to protect the needle of the auto-injector device 100 and limit the entry of contaminants into the auto-injector device 100.

[0019] To implement the auto-injector device 100 for the medicament, referring to FIG. 1, at step 108, the cap 106 of the auto-injector device 100 may be removed to deliver the medicament to the patient. Subsequently, at step 110, the distal end 104 of the auto-injector device 100 may be placed on an injection site corresponding to the subcutaneous (sub-Q) region to deliver the medicament to the patient. When the auto-injector device 100 is placed at the site, the auto-injector device 100 may be pushed in the direction towards the injection site and held for a predetermined time to deliver the medicament to the patient through the site. Subsequently, at step 112, the auto-injector device 100 may be removed from the injection site and discarded into a sharp collector. Details of the structure and operation of the auto-injector device 100 will be described in detail in subsequent sections of the present disclosure.

[0020] Figure 2a shows a perspective view of an auto-injector device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Figure 2b shows an exploded view of the auto-injector device 100 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Figures 3a and 3b show cross-sectional views of the auto-injector device 100 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Referring to Figures 2a, 2b, and 3a, in one embodiment, the auto-injector device 100 may include a first body member 202 and a second body member 204. The first body member 202 and the second body member 204 may be adapted to be coupled to each other to define a housing 205 for accommodating various sub-components of the auto-injector device 100. In one embodiment, the first body member 202 and the second body member 204 may be coupled to each other via a snap lock without departing from the scope of the present disclosure.

[0021] Furthermore, the auto-injector device 100 may include a syringe assembly 206, a prefilled syringe (PFS) holder 208, a needle guard 210, a needle guard spring 212, a locking member 214, a plunger 216, a plunger spring 218, and a spring release arm 220. In one embodiment, the syringe assembly 206 may include, but is not limited to, a needle 222 and a barrel 224 adapted to be coupled to the needle 222. The barrel 224 may be adapted to hold a drug. The barrel 224 may include a front portion and a rear portion distal to the front portion. The front portion may be adapted to be coupled to the needle 222, and the rear portion may be adapted to movably receive the plunger 216.

[0022] Furthermore, the needle 222 may be fitted to release the drug from the syringe assembly 206. The needle 222 may be fitted to connect to the front portion of the barrel 224 so that the flow of the drug may be directed out of the barrel 224 through the needle 222 during the operation of the automatic injector device 100. Furthermore, the PFS holder 208 may be fitted to hold the syringe assembly 206 within the housing 205 of the automatic injector device 100.

[0023] In one embodiment, the needle guard 210 may be adapted to house the PFS holder 208 together with the syringe assembly 206 within the automatic injector device 100. The needle guard 210 may include a proximal end 210-1 and a distal end 210-2. Furthermore, a needle guard spring 212 may be adapted to be connected to the needle guard 210. The needle guard spring 212 may be provided to allow elastic movement of the needle guard 210 in the direction along the axis X-X' of the automatic injector device 100 during operation of the automatic injector device 100.

[0024] Furthermore, the spring release arm 220 may be located at the proximal end 102 of the automatic injector device 100. In one embodiment, the spring release arm 220 may be adapted to be connected to a second body member 204. The spring release arm 220 may be adapted to support the plunger 216 and plunger spring 218 within the automatic injector device 100. The plunger 216 may be located coaxially with respect to the barrel 224. The plunger 216 may be adapted to reciprocate within the barrel 224 to release the drug and to draw the drug into the barrel 224. The plunger 216 may be adapted to move along the axis X-X' of the automatic injector device 100. The plunger 216 may be adapted to reciprocate within the barrel 224 of the syringe assembly 206 to release the drug from the syringe assembly 206 and to draw the drug into the barrel 224.

[0025] Furthermore, a plunger spring 218 may be provided to enable the elastic movement of the plunger 216 within the barrel 224 in a direction along axis X-X'. In particular, during the operation of the automatic injector device 100, the plunger spring 218 may be adapted to elastically push the plunger 216 within the barrel 224 to release the drug from the barrel 224 of the syringe assembly 206. The plunger spring 218 may be adapted to be compressed between the head portion of the plunger 216 and the locking member 214.

[0026] Figure 4 shows a perspective view of a plunger 216 of an automatic injector device 100 according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. In one embodiment, a locking member 214 may be fitted to engage with the plunger 216 to hold the plunger in a certain position relative to the barrel 224. Furthermore, the locking member 214 may be fitted to hold the spring release arm 220 in a locked position to ensure engagement of the spring release arm 220 with the plunger 216. In one embodiment, the locking member 214 may be fitted to surround at least a portion of the spring release arm 220 to prevent the spring release arm 220 from bending radially outward relative to the plunger 216, thereby ensuring engagement of the plunger 216 with the spring release arm 220.

[0027] Referring to Figures 3a, 3b, and 4, the plunger 216 may include an engagement portion 402 extending along the length L of the plunger 216. In one embodiment, the engagement portion 402 may be embodied as one of a helical groove and a circular groove, without departing from the scope of the present disclosure. The locking member 214 may be adapted to engage with the engagement portion 402 of the plunger 216 to hold the plunger 216 in position within the automatic injector device 100. In particular, the locking member 214 may engage at one of a plurality of positions within the engagement portion 402 along the length L of the plunger 216.

[0028] The position of the plunger 216 relative to the barrel 224 may be adapted to adjust to vary the amount of drug released from the barrel 224. The position of the plunger 216 may be adjusted by engaging a locking member 214 with the plunger at one of a plurality of positions along the length L of the plunger 216. In one embodiment, the locking member 214 may include locking teeth 302 adapted to engage with the engagement portion 402 of the plunger 216. The locking member 214 may be movable between an engaged position and a released position.

[0029] In one embodiment, the needle guard 210 may be adapted to move the locking member 214 from an engaged position to a released position. In the engaged position, the locking teeth 302 may engage with the engaging portion 402 to hold the plunger 216 at a position away from the distal end 104 of the auto injector device 100. In such a position, the plunger spring 218 may be compressed between the head portion of the plunger 216 and the locking member 214. Furthermore, in the released position, the needle guard 210 may move the locking member 214 toward the proximal end 102 of the auto injector device 100. Due to such movement of the locking member 214, the locking teeth 302 may be released from the engaging portion 402 of the plunger 216. Subsequently, the plunger spring 218 may push the plunger 216 in the barrel 224 toward the distal end 104 of the auto injector device 100 to release the drug from the syringe assembly 206.

[0030] As described above, the position of the plunger 216 relative to the barrel 224 in the automatic injector device 100 may be adjustable to deliver different amounts of drug from the automatic injector device 100. Referring to Figures 3b and 4, in one example, the locking member 214 may engage with the engagement portion 402 at a distance X1 with respect to the length L of the plunger 216. In such a case, the plunger 216 may be held at a certain position P1 relative to the front portion 210-1 of the barrel 224 in the automatic injector device 100.

[0031] For such a position of the plunger 216, the barrel 224 may hold a volume V1, i.e., the maximum volume of drug to be dispensed through the needle 222 during the operation of the automatic injector device 100. In another example, the locking member 214 may engage with the engaging portion 402 at a distance X2 with respect to the length L of the plunger 216. In such a case, the plunger 216 may be held at a position P2 with respect to the front portion 210-1 of the barrel 224 in the automatic injector device 100. For such a position of the plunger 216, the barrel 224 may hold a volume V2 of drug to be dispensed through the needle 222.

[0032] However, in the illustrated embodiment, the operation of the plunger 216 and the locking member 214 is described in relation to positions P1 and P2 of the plunger 216 within the automatic injector device 100. As will be understood by those skilled in the art, without departing from the scope of the disclosure, the plunger 216 may be locked in multiple positions by the locking member 214 to change the amount of drug delivered from the automatic injector device 100 as needed.

[0033] Figures 5a–5c illustrate the operation of an automated injector device 100 for drug delivery according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. Figure 6 shows an enlarged cross-sectional view of portion A of the automated injector device 100 shown in Figure 5c, according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. Firstly, in order to deliver drug to the patient's sub-cue area through the automated injector device 100, the cap 106 may be removed from the distal end 104 of the automated injector device 100 to expose the needle 222 of the syringe assembly 206.

[0034] Furthermore, referring to Figure 5b, the distal end 104 of the automated injector device 100 may be positioned at the injection site, i.e., the skin, corresponding to the patient's sub-cue area. In one embodiment, the injection site may be selected based on various parameters such as prescription, type of drug, and amount of drug to be injected, without departing from the scope of the present disclosure. Subsequently, the automated injector device 100 may be pressed against the skin such that the needle guard 210 is pressed against the skin, resulting in the needle guard 210 moving toward the proximal end 102 of the automated injector device 100. Due to such movement of the needle guard 210, the needle 222 may be inserted into the patient's sub-cue area to deliver the drug. Furthermore, once the drug is injected, the automated injector device 100 may be moved away from the skin, resulting in the movement of the needle guard 210 covering the needle 222 of the automated injector device 100. This effectively eliminates the potential injury that could occur due to the needle being exposed when the automated injector device 100 is withdrawn from the injection site.

[0035] Referring to Figures 5c and 6, the movement of the needle guard 210 may push the locking member 214 toward the proximal end 102 of the auto-injector device 100. Such movement of the locking member 214 may result in the release of the locking teeth 302 from the engaging portion 402 of the plunger 216. In particular, the locking teeth 302 may move laterally away from the engaging portion 402, thereby unlocking the movement of the plunger 216 under the elastic force of the plunger spring 218. Subsequently, the plunger 216 may move toward the distal end 104 of the auto-injector device 100 within the barrel 224 under the elastic force of the plunger spring 218. The plunger 216 may push the drug held within the barrel 224 to deliver the drug to the patient's sub-cue area through the needle 222 of the syringe assembly 206.

[0036] In one embodiment, a rubber stopper (not shown) may be attached to the plunger 216 and adapted to move with the plunger 216 within the barrel 224 to release the drug held within the barrel 224 of the syringe assembly 206. The rubber stopper may be adapted to be inserted into the barrel 224 in such a way that the rubber stopper may function as a sealing member to prevent the drug from flowing out from one end of the barrel 224. The rubber stopper may move with the plunger 216 to release the drug from the barrel 224 through a needle 222 located at the other end of the barrel 224.

[0037] As can be seen, the automated injector device 100 of this disclosure includes a locking member 214 adapted to lock a plunger 216 at different positions for administering different amounts of drug through the automated injector device 100. The plunger 216 may include an engaging portion 402 extending along the length L of the plunger 216. The locking member 214 may engage with the engaging portion 402 to hold the plunger 216 in a pre-loaded position for releasing drug from the syringe assembly 206. The locking member 214 may engage with the engaging portion 402 at different positions along the length L of the plunger 216 to vary the amount of drug administered through the automated injector device 100.

[0038] Therefore, the automated injector device 100 can be reused for different types and doses of drugs without modifying the subcomponents of the automated injector device 100. In particular, this may reduce the need to manufacture different subcomponents of the automated injector device 100 for administering different types and doses of drugs. Furthermore, this substantially reduces the overall manufacturing cost of the automated injector device 100. Thus, the automated injector device 100 of this disclosure is flexible in implementation, compact, cost-effective, convenient, and has a wide range of applications.

[0039] The automated injector device 100 described herein may be used to deliver a variety of therapeutic compounds, including but not limited to drugs and biological agents, antibodies, antisense agents, RNA interference agents, gene therapies, primary and embryonic stem cells, vaccines, and combinations thereof.
