[0002] This invention relates to assemblies and methods for mounting electrical fixtures to suspended ceilings.BACKGROUND
[0003] Many building interiors employ suspended ceilings. Suspended ceilings are formed of structural grids and removable ceiling tiles. The components of the structural grids, i.e., grid members, and the removable ceiling tiles can be of various shapes and sizes, and arranged in various configurations. These variations result in numerous on-site variables that may be necessary to consider when installing electrical fixtures to the suspended ceiling.
[0004] Moreover, the suspended or false ceiling is formed of acoustical tiles or drywall tiles which are supported by a network of inverted T-shaped grid members. The T-grid members are supported from the building structure by a plurality of wires or stems and are typically formed of lightweight, small gauge sheet steel. Such construction minimizes the cost of the grid members, provides adequate structural support for the ceiling tiles, and allows adequate access to mechanicals. In construction of buildings, it is known to install false or suspended ceilings beneath water pipes, heating ducts and electrical races in order to easily access such structures while concealing them from normal activity within a building or room. Pre-existing piping, wiring, ductwork and insulation in the plenum space can further complicate the installation process.
[0005] In mounting light fixtures to the T-grid, various known light fixtures require the use of multiple tools in order to connect hanger bars to the inverted T-grid formed of a plurality of inverted T-bars. For example, current mounting systems have four mounting bar ends which must be attached to the inverted T-bar members by bending using pliers, adding wire, driving a screw into the T-bar or by snapping the hanger bars onto the T-grid and utilizing tools to adjust the height of the fixture relative to the acoustical tile ceiling members. Such activities are difficult in and of themselves, however, when working above the ceiling level on a ladder, the task is not only difficult, but may be unsafe.
[0006] Architectural design requirements typically demand mounting electrical fixtures to the suspended ceiling without compromising the structural, acoustic or visual integrity of the suspended ceiling. Predicting on-site mounting conditions can be difficult if not impossible for persons installing electrical fixtures, and hence the conventional requirement for installers to equip themselves with a variety of mounting devices to ensure proper installation.
[0007] Assemblies and methods for efficiently mounting electrical fixtures to suspended ceilings are desirable.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0008] These and other drawbacks of such conventional technologies are addressed here by providing a luminaire, such as a recessed downlight, with a hanger bar assembly for a luminaire, wherein the luminaire is configured to attach to a T-grid / suspended ceiling system. The hanger bar assembly may include a hanger bar member having a first T-bar attachment structure disposed on an end thereof and a second T-bar attachment structure disposed on an opposite end thereof. The hanger bar member is attached or integrated into one side the frame of the luminaire for connection of the frame to a suspended ceiling. The hanger bar assembly can also be used to attach any electrical component or other device to a T-grid / suspended ceiling system.
[0009] The first and the second attachment structures each include a horizontally extending portion with an adjustment hinge therein and a T-bar tab connected to the adjustment hinge. The hanger bar assembly is positionable against an upper surface of a suspended ceiling T-grid system and the T-bar tab is positionable against one side of a T-grid member, generally near a corner. The T-bar tab attaches to one side of the T-grid system. The T-bar tab include a hinge that is enables the T-bar tab to be adjusted or bent to allow it to be attached to the T-bar in one of six sides of a corner of the T-grid system.
[0010] The T-bar tab also has a first and second fastener aperture, the first and second fastener apertures being formed about a common central longitudinal axis. The T-bar clips also include a seismic wire hanger aperture about a common central longitudinal axis. The hanger bar assembly 100 includes a substantially horizontal hanger bar member 102 having a first end and a second end. Each end having a T-bar attachment structure 104 disposed thereon.

The hanger bar member 102 and luminaire are secured together by any suitable means, such as by screws, rivets, or other mechanical couplings. The housing of the luminaire may include tabs receivable in corresponding slots of housing to facilitate coupling of the hanger bar assembly. The hanger bar member 102 is generally sized to extend from one T-bar hanger to another T-bar hanger.
[0031] As shown in FIG. 2, the T-bar attachment structures 104 includes a horizontally extending portion 108 coupled to the hanger bar member 102. An adjustment hinge 110 is configured on each end of the hanger bar horizontally extending portion 108 and a T-bar tab 112 connected to the adjustment hinge 110. The T-bar tab 112 extends downward from and substantially perpendicular to the hanger bar member 102. The T-bar tab 112 is configured to extend downward from the top of a T-bar hanger.

As further described with regard to FIGS. 6, the T-bar tab 112 is adjustable or bendable to be adjacent or face to one of six different sides of a T-Bar hanger intersection or corner of a T-grid hanger system. The hanger bar assembly 100 increases the installation flexibility and allows installers the ability to hand bend the T-grid tab around to a side of the T-Bar that is more accessible saving them time. Once adjusted or bent to a suitable position, the T-grid tab 116 can be fixed to the T-grid hanger.
[0033] The adjustment hinge 110 is configured to enable the T-bar tab to be pivotally connected to the hanger bar member 102. The adjustment hinge 110 can be any flexible joint or hinge made from the same material as the two rigid parts it connects, typically by thinning or cutting a section of the plastic or metal to allow bending. The hinge can be a “living hinge.” A "living hinge" is a thin, flexible section of plastic or metal that connects two rigid of plastic for metal parts, allowing them to rotate or bend, often used in applications requiring a durable, flexible joint. In some embodiments a living hinge is used which allows the component to pivot about a pivot axis between different use positions relative to the hanger bar member 102. The hanger bar assembly 100 may further includes a stiffening support having a support axis substantially parallel to the pivot axis. The support is bonded or joined to the panel to locally reinforce the panel adjacent the living hinge. The stiffening support eliminates the need for a metal hinge and provides for a light weight assembly with improved aesthetics and function.
[0034] The attachment structures further comprise a plurality of apertures 114 and 116. The plurality of apertures may be located on the T-bar tab 112. The apertures or slots allow for alternate mounting options or for pass-through of alternate fastening hardware. In some embodiments, aperture 116 is located at an end of the T-bar tab 112 that extends downward from the top of a T-bar hanger and is used to mechanically attach the T-bar attachment structure to the side of the T-bar hanger. The luminaire fixture 118 generally comprises a fixture frame 120 interposed between a first hanger bar assembly 100-1 and a second hanger bar assembly 100-2. Claims
1. A hanger bar assembly for mounting a luminaire to a T-grid hanger system, the mounting bracket assembly comprising: a hanger bar member attachable to the luminaire;at least one T-bar attachment structure, the at least one T-bar attachment structure, having,a horizontally extending portion coupled to the hanger bar member, an adjustment hinge coupled to the horizontally extending portion 108 and a T-bar tab connected to the adjustment hinge;wherein the T-bar tab extends downward from and substantially perpendicular to the horizontally extending portion;wherein the T-bar tab is configured to extend downward from a top of a T-bar hanger of the T-grid hanger system and the horizontally extending portion is supported by the top of the T-bar hanger; andwherein the T-bar tab is adjustable or bendable to be adjacent to one of six different sides of a T-Bar hanger intersection or corner of the T-grid hanger system where the luminaire is positioned.
2. The hanger bar assembly according to claim 1, wherein the adjustment hinge is a living hinge.
3. The hanger bar assembly according to claim 1, wherein the hanger bar member is configured to extend from one T-bar hanger to another T-bar hanger.
4. The hanger bar assembly according to claim 1, wherein the hanger bar member 102 is integrated into one side of a frame of the luminaire.
5. The hanger bar assembly according to claim 1, wherein the T-bar tab further includes apertures to enable attachment to the side of the T-grid hanger.
6. The hanger bar assembly according to claim 1, further including a fastener to enable attachment of T-bar tab to the side of the T-grid hanger using apertures, wherein the fastener is one or more of a screw, screws, clips, grommets, spring clips, tape, and Velcro.
7. The hanger bar assembly according to claim 1, further including a hanger aperture for a seismic wire.
8. A luminaire with a frame configured to be mounted to a T-grid hanger system, the luminaire comprising: at least two mounting bracket assemblies coupled to the frame, each mounting bracket assembly having a hanger bar member, at least one T-bar attachment structure, the at least one T-bar attachment structure, having, a horizontally extending portion coupled to the hanger bar member, an adjustment hinge coupled to the horizontally extending portion 108 and a T-bar tab connected to the adjustment hinge; wherein the T-bar tab extends downward from and substantially perpendicular to the horizontally extending portion;wherein each T-bar tab of the at least two mounting bracket assemblies and is configured to extend downward from a top of a T-bar hanger of the T-grid hanger system and the horizontally extending portion is supported by the top of the T-bar hanger; andwherein each T-bar tab is adjustable or bendable to face to one of six different sides of a T-Bar hanger intersection or corner of the T-grid hanger system where the luminaire is positioned.
9. The luminaire according to claim 8, configured to be inserted between four corners of the T-grid hanger system and the T-bar tab is adjusted or bent to face to one of six different sides of a T-Bar hanger intersection or corner of the T-grid hanger system.
10. The luminaire (118) according to claim 8, wherein each T-bar tab (112) further includes an aperture (116) to enable attachment to one of six different sides of a T-Bar hanger intersection.
11. The luminaire according to claim 10, further including at least two fasteners to enable attachment of each T-bar tab to the one of six different sides of the T-grid hanger using apertures, wherein the fastener is one or more of a screw, screws, clips, grommets, spring clips, tape, and Velcro.

A hanger bar assembly for mounting a device or component to a T-grid hanger system, the mounting bracket assembly comprising: a hanger bar member attachable to the device or component;at least one T-bar attachment structure, the at least one T-bar attachment structure, having,- a horizontally extending portion coupled to the hanger bar member, an adjustment hinge coupled to the horizontally extending portion 108 and a T-bar tab connected to the adjustment hinge;wherein the T-bar tab extends downward from and substantially perpendicular to the horizontally extending portion;wherein the T-bar tab is configured to extend downward from a top of a T-bar hanger of the T-grid hanger system and the horizontally extending portion is supported by the top of the T-bar hanger; andwherein the T-bar tab is adjustable or bendable to be adjacent to one of six different sides of a T-Bar hanger intersection or corner of the T-grid hanger system where the device or component is positioned.
