Abstract
Description
[0001] Latin name of the genus and species: Echeveria spp.
[0002] Cultivar denomination: ‘BINL-77120302’.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program to produce distinct and better performing Echeveria cultivars. The new cultivar is the result of a crossing made by the inventor in May of 2019. The seed parent is the unpatented Echeveria ‘Red Edge’. The pollen parent is the unpatented Echeveria ‘Nina’. The new cultivar was selected by the inventor in August of 2020 at a nursery in Nairobi, Kenya.
[0004] Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘BINL-77120302’ by terminal cuttings was first performed at the same nursery in Nairobi, Kenya in August of 2020, and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type through successive generations.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0005] The cultivar ‘BINL-77120302’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
[0006] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘BINL-77120302’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘BINL-77120302’ as a new and distinct Echeveria cultivar:
[0007] 1. Intense red color of the distal leaf surface of the older leaves and fully red young leaves in the heart / center of the rosette-like plant.
[0008] 2. Thick leaves, hence not stretching easily or quickly.
[0009] 3. Ornamental, evenly spaced foliage forming a flattened rosette plant-shape.PARENT COMPARISONS
[0010] Plants of the new cultivar ‘BINL-77120302’ are similar to plants of the female parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘BINL-77120302’ differ from in the following characteristics:
[0011] 1. Leaf color of the new cultivar is red on the distal leaf surface of the older leaves and more full red young leaves in the heart / center of the rosette-like plant. Leaf color of the seed parent is green with a small / narrow red leaf-rim / edge.
[0012] 2. Plants of the new cultivar have a less upright growth habit than plants of the seed parent.
[0013] Plants of the new cultivar ‘BINL-77120302’ are similar to plants of the male parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘BINL-77120302’ differ in the following characteristics:
[0014] 1. Leaf color of the new cultivar is red on the distal leaf surface of the older leaves and more full red young leaves in the heart / center of the rosette-like plant. Leaf color of the pollen parent is more evenly colored, with younger leaves fully pinkish-red, older leaves turn to a more red-green color.
[0015] 2. Leaves of the new cultivar are less pointed to the leaf end than leaves of the pollen parent.COMMERCIAL COMPARISONS
[0016] Plants of the new cultivar ‘BINL-77120302’ are similar to plants of the commercial cultivar Echeveria ‘Mont’, unpatented. However, plants of the new cultivar differ in the following characteristics:
[0017] 1. Leaf color of the new cultivar is red on the distal leaf surface of the older leaves. In the center of the plant there are more entirely red young leaves. Leaf color of this comparator is more evenly colored, with younger leaves fully pinkish-green-red, older leaves turn to a more dull green color.
[0018] 2. Leaves of the new cultivar are less round than leaves of this comparator.
[0019] Plants of the new cultivar ‘BINL-77120302’ are similar to plants of the commercial cultivar Echeveria ‘Spotlight’, unpatented. However, plants of the new cultivar differ in the following characteristics:
[0020] 1. Leaf color of the new cultivar is red on the distal leaf surface of the older leaves and young foliage is entirely red in the heart / center of the rosette-like plant. Leaf color of this comparator is evenly green colored with red leaf-tips.
[0021] 2. Plants of the new cultivar have less upright habits than plants of this comparator.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
[0022] The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a top-down view of a typical plant of ‘BINL-77120302’ grown in a greenhouse. The plant is approximately 24 weeks of age in a 12 cm pot.
[0023] FIG. 2 is a side-view of the same plant.
[0024] The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
