[0002] Variety denomination: ‘Cotton Ball’.STATEMENT REGARDING PRIOR DISCLOSURES UNDER 37 CFR 1.77(B)(6)

[0003] The first offer for sale was made by Walters Gardens, Inc. on Apr. 28, 2025, to Medford Nursery'. On Dec. 1, 2025, the new plant was first advertised on a website managed by Walters Gardens, Inc. The plant was also listed in the “Walters Gardens 2025-2026 Catalog” published and released on Jun. 3, 2025. Walters Gardens, Inc. obtained the new plant and all information about the new plant directly from the inventor. No plants of Thalictrum ‘Cotton Ball’ have been sold in this country or anywhere in the world, nor has any disclosure of the new plant been made more than one year prior the filing date of this application and such sale or disclosure within one year was either derived directly or indirectly from the inventor and therefore a 35 U.S.C. § 102(b) exception.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0004] The present invention relates to the new and distinct cultivar of Meadow Rue, botanically known as Thalictrum ‘Cotton Ball’, and hereinafter referred to as the cultivar ‘Cotton Ball’ or the “new plant.” The new plant was an intentional cross by the inventor at a wholesale perennial nursery in Zeeland, Michigan, USA on Jun. 21, 2019, between T. aquilegiifolium ‘Nimbus White’ (not patented) as the female or seed parent and the male or pollen parent is a selection of T. polygamum known only as ‘A’ (not patented). The seeds were harvested on Aug. 7, 2019, and the new plant was assigned the breeder code 19-1-2 later in the evaluation process at the same nursery.

[0005] Thalictrum ‘Cotton Ball’ has been asexually propagated first in 2022 at the same nursery in Zeeland, MI by sterile plant tissue culture. Plants of ‘Cotton Ball’ have been found to be stable and identical to the original selection in multiple generations of asexual propagation.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0006] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of the new cultivar. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘Cotton Ball’ as a unique cultivar of Thalictrum:

[0007] 1. Tripinnately compound foliage of medium green;

[0008] 2. Wispy white-colored flowers well above the foliage;

[0009] 3. Winter-hardy habit with dark stems.

[0010] The female parent differs in having a shorter habit, white flowers and foliage that is bluish-green in color. The male parent differs in having a taller habit and creamy-white flowers.

[0011] The nearest comparison cultivars known to the inventor are: ‘Nimbus White’ (not patented), ‘Black Stockings’ (not patented), and ‘Ghent Ebony’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 31,920.

[0012] Thalictrum ‘Nimbus White’ (not patented) has a much shorter habit and the flowers are white and the seed heads are lavender-pink. ‘Black Stockings’ (not patented) has a taller habit with stems that are darker purple, and the flowers are deep purple. ‘Ghent Ebony’ has a more compact habit, darker grey-purple foliage, and white flowers.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0013] The photographs of the new plant demonstrate the unique traits and the overall appearance of Thalictrum ‘Cotton Ball’. The colors are as accurate as reasonably possible with color reproductions. Variation in ambient light spectrum, source and direction may cause the appearance of minor variation in color. The plant used in the photographs was a two-year-old plant and was grown in a full-sun nursery trial garden in Zeeland, Michigan with supplemental water and fertilizer when needed. No pinching or plant growth regulators have been used.
