Description

EXPIRY OF VALIDITY DURATION OF GLOBAL NAVIGATION SATELLITE SYSTEM INFORMATIONFIELD

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of telecommunication and in particular to devices, methods, apparatuses and computer readable storage media of user equipment (UE) behaviour after an expiry of a validity duration of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) information.BACKGROUND

[0002] In 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) release 18, a work item on enhanced support of internet of things (IoT) over non-terrestrial network (NTN) had been discussed. The work item aims to further develop the topic of IoT over NTN proposed in release 17.

[0003] One of the main assumptions for both releases is that the UE is not able to communicate with the NTN system and simultaneously perform GNSS measurements. The latter is needed for the UE to perform pre-compensation of uplink transmissions in terms of time and frequency adjustments. Such pre-compensation is needed, when the NTN system is operating over low-earth orbit satellites, which move about 28,000 km / h relative to earth. The pre-compensation is based on the UE being aware of the target satellite’s position (via satellite assistance information broadcast in system information block (SIB) and the UE’s own position acquired via GNSS. By calculating the distance between the UE and the satellite and how the distance will change during a transmission, the UE can determine when to transmit.SUMMARY

[0004] In a first aspect, there is provided an apparatus. The apparatus comprises at least one processor; and at least one memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the apparatus at least to: determine that a validity duration of GNSS information has expired and a subsequent GNSS measurement has not been initiated; and apply, based on the determination, a configuration that an uplink transmission is not allowed to be performed by the apparatus and a downlink transmission scheduling is allowed.

[0005] In a second aspect, there is provided an apparatus. The apparatus comprises at least  one processor; and at least one memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the apparatus at least to: determine that a validity duration of GNSS information has expired and a subsequent GNSS measurement has not been initiated; and apply, based on the determination, a configuration associated with a conditional handover.

[0050] In some example embodiments, links from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110 may be referred to as a downlink (DL) , while links from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120 may be referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the network device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the terminal device 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or receiver) . In UL, the terminal device 110 is a TX device (or transmitter) and the network device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0051] Communications in the communication network 100 may be implemented according  to any proper communication protocol (s) , includes, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 5G, the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, includes but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , FDD, TDD, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0052] As described above, the work item on enhanced support of IoT over NTN has been discussed and the 3GPP assumption is that the UE cannot operate NTN communication and GNSS simultaneously.

[0053] In release 17, it was therefore agreed that a UE will move to radio resource control (RRC) idle, when the UE has to perform a GNSS measurement. Such a need is known to the network based on the UE reporting the remaining GNSS validity duration via the GNSS-validity duration RRC information element. For example, the IE “GNSS-ValidityDuration” indicates the remaining GNSS validity duration in the UE. For example, value s10 corresponds to 10 seconds, s20 corresponds to 20 seconds and so on. Furthermore, value min5 corresponds to 5 minutes, value min10 corresponds to 10 minutes and so on.

[0054] However, moving to RRC idle creates overhead in terms of connection setup signaling if the UE has a long connection and is non-stationary i.e., it may need to move to RRC idle to measure GNSS multiple times. Therefore, the work item in release 18 includes study and specify needed improved GNSS operations for a new position fix for UE pre-compensation during long connection times and for reduced power consumption. Simultaneous GNSS and NTN narrow band IoT (NB-IoT)  / Enhanced Machine Type Communication (eMTC) operation is not assumed.

[0055] In the release 18 discussions, it has been agreed that the eNB can trigger the UE to perform a GNSS measurement, e.g., when the current validity duration of GNSS information is about to expire.

[0056] Since the UE cannot operate NTN communication and GNSS simultaneously, it has  been further agreed that a GNSS measurement gap should be defined in which the UE start the GNSS measurement and stop the cellular options for data transmission. For example, For GNSS measurement in RRC connected, if eNB aperiodically triggers connected UE to make GNSS measurement, the UE can re-acquire GNSS position fix with a gap.

[0057] Furthermore, the topic of the possibility of the UE remaining RRC connected after the validity duration of GNSS information has expired has been further discussed. For example, it has been discussed that “UE can stay in RRC_CONNECTED state when current GNS position becoming out-of-date if the UE has initiated a new measurement. ” . This is beneficial, because it can avoid the UE having to move to RRC idle and setup the RRC connection again, even if the validity duration of the GNSS information expires.

[0058] It has been agreed that the UE can stay in RRC_CONNECTED if the UE enters a GNSS measurement gap. However, the discussion on when the UE enters a GNSS measurement gap thus when the GNSS measurement gap shall be started still need to be discussed.

[0059] For example, allowing the UE to stay in RRC Connected state even if the UE has not started the new GNSS measurement may be one possible way-forward. That means the GNSS measurement gap may be started after the expiry of current GNSS validity duration expiry.

[0060] This is beneficial for the basic scenario, where the network is responsible for triggering the GNSS measurement. The reason is that the scheduling opportunities for a UE can be relatively scarce especially in NB-IoT NTN with limited system resource and thus it may be challenging for the network to schedule the GNSS measurement trigger to the UE shortly before or right at the expiry of the GNSS validity duration.

[0061] In this situation, the UE behavior in a period when the validity duration of GNSS information has expired, while a new GNSS measurement has not be started (i.e., the new measurement gap has not started) may need to be further discussed.

[0062] Therefore, the present disclosure proposes a mechanism for the UE behavior after the expiry of the validity duration of the GNSS information. In this solution, the terminal device 110, after determining the expiry of the validity duration of the GNSS information, may apply a configuration that an uplink transmission is not allowed to be performed by the apparatus and a downlink transmission scheduling is allowed (i.e. the UE shall monitor for downlink transmission scheduling from the network such as Downlink Control Information  on the Physical Downlink Channel) , or a configuration associated with a conditional handover (CHO) ; or switch a configuration of at least one of a cell discontinuous reception (DRX) or a search space set based on the determination.

[0063] This solution may enable the UE and network to have a common understanding of the UE behavior after the GNSS validity duration expiry and provide flexibility to the network scheduler, because the network is not forced to schedule the GNSS measurement trigger command at the expiry of the validity duration of GNSS information at the terminal device 110. Furthermore, the terminal device may be allowed to continue certain procedures, e.g., CHO execution, even with the expired GNSS information. This can enhance the mobility performance.

[0064] Example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0065] Reference is now made to FIG. 2, which shows a signaling chart 200 for communication according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 2, the signaling chart 200 involves a terminal device 110 and a network device 120. For the purpose of discussion, reference is made to FIG. 1 to describe the signaling chart 200. Although a single terminal device 110 is illustrated in FIG. 2, it would be appreciated that there may be a plurality of terminal devices performing similar operations as described with respect to the terminal device 110 below.

[0066] As shown in FIG. 2, during remaining validity duration of GNSS information of the terminal device 110, the network device 120 may provide (202) a configuration for the behavior of the terminal device 110 after a validity duration of GNSS information has expired and a new GNSS measurement has not been initiated. In some embodiments, the configuration may also be predefined.

[0067] In various examples of the present disclosure, a configuration or configurations causing the performance of the terminal device 110 (e.g., such as configuration for the behavior of the terminal device after validity duration of GNSS information has expired) may be provided by the network device 120 to the terminal device or the configuration (s) may be predefined (e.g. as to be defined in specification (s) ) .

[0068] Then the terminal device 110 may determine (204) that a validity duration of GNSS information has expired and a new GNSS measurement has not been initiated. It is to be  understood that the new GNSS measurement has not been initiated may be considered as the new GNSS measurement has not been triggered or has not been started. Latter case (i.e. new GNSS measurement has not been started) may mean that the measurement for obtaining valid GNSS information has not been started, but that the UE has received the trigger from the network. The former case (i.e. GNSS measurement has not been triggered) may refer to a case in which network, such as network device 120, has configured the new measurement for the terminal device 110, but the terminal device 110 has not yet received the measurement trigger (which may be sent later and thus start the measurement as indicated by the network to the terminal device 110) .

[0069] When the validity duration of GNSS information at the terminal device 110 has expired and a new GNSS measurement is not yet triggered or started, hence there is a gap between these two events. In this case, the terminal device 110 may apply (206) the configuration that provided by the network device 120 for the behavior of the terminal device 110 after a validity duration of GNSS information has expired and a new GNSS measurement has not been initiated.

[0070] In some embodiments, after the validity duration of terminal device’s GNSS information has expired and a new GNSS measurement is not yet triggered or started, the terminal device 110 may apply a configuration that an uplink transmission from the terminal device 110 is not allowed and a downlink scheduling is allowed at the network device 120. For example, the uplink transmission may comprise a scheduling request, a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) transmission and / or a random access transmission.

[0071] Compare to the legacy behavior for the case where the validity duration of GNSS information has expired and the terminal device moves from RRC Connected to RRC idle, the solution of the present disclosure proposes to apply the configuration that an uplink transmission from the terminal device 110 is not allowed as one network-configured option.

[0072] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may schedule downlink transmissions but HARQ feedback from the terminal device is implicitly disabled. All the HARQ process scheduled after the validity duration of GNSS information has expired and a new GNSS measurement is not yet triggered or started should be regarded as having HARQ feedback disabled.

[0073] Furthermore, in some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may consider the time alignment timer (TAT) suspended / paused. After the terminal device 110 reports (208) the  completion of the GNSS measurement, the network device 120 may schedule (210) a time alignment command (TAC) to correct latest TA of the terminal device 110 and reset the TAT timer.

[0074] Furthermore, the terminal device 110 may also obtain a wait timer and start the wait timer after the validity duration of the GNSS information has expired. That is, for example, the terminal device 110 may obtain information on the wait timer (e.g., wait timer configuration) or the wait timer may be predefined. The terminal device 110 may start the wait timer based on expiry of the validity duration of the GNSS information. For example, the terminal device may start the wait timer at the expiry of the validity duration of the GNSS information or in response to expiration of the validity duration. For example, wait timer may be started based on determining that the validity duration of the GNSS information has expired. The terminal device 110 may switch (212) to a RRC idle mode after or at the expiry of the wait timer. That is, based on the wait timer expiring, the terminal device 110 may switch from RRC Connected to RRC idle mode. For example, the terminal device 110 may determine that wait timer expires or has expired and move to RRC idle mode based on the determining.

[0075] In some embodiments, value of the wait timer may be an absolute value, e.g., 5ms, 10ms, etc. For example, when wait timer is started, it may start with an initial value (e.g., absolute value) and may expire when the value of the wait timer reaches zero. Thus, wait timer may be a countdown timer, for example.

[0076] In some other embodiments, the wait timer may be configured as a number of DRX cycles or physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) monitoring occasions (i.e., according to the search space) .

[0077] It is also possible that the wait timer may also correspond to t-service (i.e., the time an earth-fixed cell stops serving the area) , if the t-service appears before the network-configured wait timer.

[0078] Optionally or additionally, the terminal device 110 may postpone autonomous GNSS measurement until the expiry of the wait timer.

[0079] Furthermore, the network device 120 may configure the terminal device 110 to suspend the data transmission / reception but maintain other (measurement) tasks associated with a radio link connection such as radio link monitoring (RLM)  / radio resource management (RRM)  / beam failure detection (BFD) until the wait timer duration expiry and / or  a gap of GNSS measurement start.

[0080] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may also dynamically indicate activation / use of any of the above possible actions of the terminal device that is mapped to an action-index via medium access control (MAC) layer at the time of validity duration of the GNSS information has expired depending on the UL / DL data situation at the time of an expiry of validity duration of GNSS information.

[0081] As another option, after the validity duration of terminal device’s GNSS information has expired and a new GNSS measurement is not yet triggered or started, the terminal device 110 may switch to a cell DRX (C-DRX) or a search space set different from that used before an expiry of the validity duration. That is, the C-DRX configuration and / or search space set configuration may be switched by the terminal device. Switching may mean that the terminal device 110 changes to a different C-DRX configuration and / or to a different search space set configuration. It is to be understood that the terminal device 110 may switch to a different C-DRX or a search space set that is configured by the network device 120.

[0082] In some embodiments, the configuration of the C-DRX and / or a search space set (i.e., the configuration to which terminal device 110 switches) may define more frequent PDCCH monitoring (i.e., than the configuration which was used prior to switching) , such that the network device 120 has higher scheduling flexibility and the terminal device 110 can get the GNSS measurement trigger faster.

[0083] In some other embodiments, the configuration of the C-DRX and / or a search space set (i.e., the configuration to which terminal device 110 switches) may define less frequent PDCCH monitoring (i.e., than the configuration which was used prior to switching) , such that the terminal device 110 can save energy while awaiting the GNSS measurement trigger.

[0084] It is also possible that the monitoring occasions can be pre-defined or scaled based on the configuration used before an expiry of the validity duration.

[0085] Furthermore, the terminal device 110 may only be required to monitor the search space set, which contains the downlink (DCI) for the GNSS measurement trigger command.

[0086] As still another option, after the validity duration of terminal device’s GNSS information has expired and a new GNSS measurement is not yet triggered or started, the terminal device 110 may apply a configuration for a CHO, especially for a location-based CHO.

[0087] In some embodiments, after the validity duration timer has expired and the location-based trigger cannot be evaluated. In that case, the terminal device 110 may be allowed to execute the handover if the A3 / A5 (i.e., radio power / quality based) condition is satisfied. Optionally or additionally, the terminal device 110 may be allowed to execute the handover if the remaining duration the wait timer (as described above) allows the terminal device 110 to complete the random access channel (RACH) access with the target cell.

[0088] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may postpone the CHO evaluation and execution until the terminal device 110 re-acquires the GNSS fix.

[0089] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may execute the CHO if the RLF timer T310 has started already for the serving cell in this situation.

[0090] In some other embodiments, the terminal device 110 may start GNSS fix acquisition immediately on the validity duration of GNSS information at the terminal device 110 has expired, to allow the CHO execution to happen based on the latest location information for more accurate CHO execution as per the configuration of the network device 120.

[0091] Additionally or optionally, the terminal device 110 may start CHO execution or GNSS position fix acquisition if the CHO configuration expires before the expiry of the wait timer.

[0092] In the embodiments of the present disclosure, the terminal device 110 may indicate whether it is capable of continuing uplink transmission and / or downlink reception during a (terminal device-defined) window where it can maintain synchronization after the validity duration timer of GNSS information at terminal device 110 has expired.

[0093] Furthermore, the terminal device 110 may also indicate whether it may need new uplink synchronization or timing-advance estimation to continue the data transmission in connected mode after the validity duration timer of GNSS information at terminal device 110 has expired. This may trigger network device transmission of timing advance commands or other type of synchronization adjustment indications.

[0094] Additionally or optionally, the terminal device 110 may also indicate whether it prefers only to do RLM / BFD and measurement related tasks without any active physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH)  / physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) after the validity duration timer of GNSS information at terminal device 110 has expired.

[0095] In this way, the embodiments of the present disclosure may enable the UE and  network to have a common understanding of the UE behavior after the GNSS validity duration expiry and provide flexibility to the network scheduler, because the network is not forced to schedule the GNSS measurement trigger command at the expiry of the validity duration of GNSS information at the terminal device 110. Furthermore, the terminal device may be allowed to continue certain procedures, e.g., CHO execution, even with the expired GNSS information. This can enhance the mobility performance.

[0096] FIG. 3 shows a flowchart of an example method 300 of an expiry of a validity duration of GNSS information according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 300 may be implemented at the terminal device 110 as shown in FIG. 1. For the purpose of discussion, the method 300 will be described with reference to FIG. 1.

[0097] At 310, the terminal device 110 determines that a validity duration of GNSS information has expired and a subsequent GNSS measurement has not been initiated.

[0098] At 320, the terminal device 110 applies, based on the determination, a configuration that an uplink transmission is not allowed to be performed by the terminal device and a downlink transmission scheduling is allowed.

[0099] In some example embodiments, the uplink transmission comprises at least one of: a scheduling request, a physical uplink control channel transmission, or a random access transmission.

[0100] In some example embodiments, a hybrid automatic repeat request feedback for the downlink transmission from the terminal device is disabled.

[0101] In some example embodiments, the terminal device may suspend a time alignment timer after the validity duration has expired; and report, to a network device, a completion of the subsequent GNSS measurement for the network device to schedule a time alignment command for resetting the time alignment timer.

[0102] In some example embodiments, the terminal device may obtain a configuration of a wait timer; start the wait timer at an expiry of the validity duration; and switch to a radio resource control idle mode based on an expiry of the wait timer.

[0103] In some example embodiments, the wait timer is configured as at least one of: an absolute value, or a number of discontinuous reception cycles, or a number of physical downlink control channel monitoring occasions or corresponding to a t-service.
