Description

DEVICES, METHODS, APPARATUSES, AND COMPUTER READABLE MEDIA FOR MASSIVE MULTIPLE INPUT MULTIPLE OUTPUTTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Various example embodiments relate to devices, methods, apparatuses, and computer readable media for massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) .BACKGROUND

[0002] Massive MIMO benefits significantly from employing arrays with a large number of antenna elements (AEs) . Well-designed transmit and receive signal processing techniques are required to achieve such advantages for the massive MIMO. However, such transmit and receive signal processing techniques that completely operate in baseband are far too complicated for the massive MIMO, since as many transceivers (TRXs) as the number of AEs need to be implemented and then combined in digital domain. Therefore, hybrid beamforming techniques become quite promising to handle the complexity. The key concept of applying hybrid beamforming in the massive MIMO is to implement cost-effective phase shifters in radio frequency (RF) before sampling and thus the reduced dimensional signal processing schemes can be carried out digitally in the baseband. However, in the massive MIMO with hybrid array architectures, the optimization problem to find hybrid beamforming matrices is subject to various constraints. The resulting solutions or iterative algorithms vary with different array architectures. This leads to considerable implementation difficulties from the product evolution point of view.SUMMARY

[0003] A brief summary of exemplary embodiments is provided below to provide basic understanding of some aspects of various embodiments. It should be noted that this summary is not intended to identify key features of essential elements or define scopes of the embodiments, and its sole purpose is to introduce some concepts in a simplified form as a preamble for a more detailed description provided below.

[0005] In a second aspect, disclosed is a method performed by a communication device for massive multiple input multiple output. The method may comprise: constructing a mapping between antenna elements and transceivers; generating a shifted codebook set based on the mapping between the antenna elements and the transceivers; and applying the shifted codebook set to a hybrid beamforming algorithm to obtain at least one beamforming matrix.

[0006] In a third aspect, disclosed is an apparatus. The apparatus as a communication device for massive multiple input multiple output may comprise: means for constructing a mapping between antenna elements and transceivers; means for generating a shifted codebook set based on the mapping between the antenna elements and the transceivers; and means for applying the shifted codebook set to a hybrid beamforming algorithm to obtain at least one beamforming matrix.

[0007] In a fourth aspect, a computer readable medium is disclosed. The computer readable medium may comprise program instructions that, when executed by a communication device for massive multiple input multiple output, may cause the communication device at least to perform: constructing a mapping between antenna elements and transceivers; generating a shifted codebook set based on the mapping between the antenna elements and the transceivers; and applying the shifted codebook set to a hybrid beamforming algorithm to obtain at least one beamforming matrix.

[0030] Herein below, some example embodiments are described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. The following description includes specific details for the purpose of providing a thorough understanding of various concepts. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that these concepts may be practiced without these specific details. In some instances, well known circuits, techniques and components are shown in block diagram form to avoid obscuring the described concepts and features.

[0031] Efficient hybrid beamforming algorithms are required for the massive MIMO. It is thus desirable to have algorithm chips / modules that are adaptable to various RF front ends. Generalized implementation to support algorithm variants for different hybrid array architectures is advantageous.

[0032] Example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for the massive MIMO. The hybrid beamforming algorithm chip / module according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure can be adaptable to various RF front ends.

[0033] FIG. 1 shows a massive MIMO 100 with hybrid array architectures to which the example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. Referring to the FIG. 1, the massive MIMO 100 may perform hybrid beamforming on multiple data streams 110 for transmission. A baseband beamformer performs digital beamforming on the multiple data streams 110, then the digitally beamformed data streams are received and transmitted, by TRX  1, 2, …, NT, to an analog beamformer 140 for analog beamforming and transmitted by AE 1, 2, …, MT. The massive MIMO 100 may be in a communication device of the network side, e.g. in a network device as at least a part of a base station (BS) such as an evolved node B (eNB) , a next generation node B (gNB) , etc., and in this case the multiple data streams 110 are to be transmitted to target user equipments (UEs) by the massive MIMO 100 in the network device. Alternatively, the massive MIMO 100 may be in a communication device of the UE side, e.g. in a UE, and in this case the multiple data streams 110 are to be transmitted to target network device (s) by the massive MIMO 100 in the UE.

[0034] FIG. 2 shows an exemplary flowchart 200 for hybrid beamforming according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure. The exemplary flowchart 200 may be performed by a communication device for massive MIMO, e.g. the communication device with the massive MIMO 100, and the communication device may be a network device or a UE.

[0035] Referring to the FIG. 2, in an operation 210, the communication device may construct a mapping between the AEs and the TRXs, then in an operation 220, the communication device may generate a shifted codebook set based on the mapping between the AEs and the TRXs, and then in an operation 230, the communication device may apply the shifted codebook set to a hybrid beamforming algorithm to obtain at least one beamforming matrix. Such hybrid beamforming according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure is a shifted codebook set based hybrid beamforming that can be implemented for various array architectures without changing key algorithm modules. The codebook feature of the algorithm can be adapted to different codebooks and can avoid additional quantization loss.

[0036] Referring back to the FIG. 1, the massive MIMO 100 with hybrid beamforming is mounted with mounted with MT transmit AEs that connect to NT TRXs via different array architectures, where MT and NT are integers and NT<MT. Assuming that the massive MIMO 100 is in the network side, the received signal yk for UE k with AEs can be expressed as the following formula (1)

[0037] where is the transmitted signal vector containing data streams,  and correspond to the analog and digital beamforming  matrices, respectively, which may be the beamforming matrices obtained in the operation 230. The digital beamforming matrix P may be used by the baseband beamformer 120, and the analog beamforming matrix F may be used by the analog beamformer 140. Additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) with variance N0 is denoted by nk, which is added to the k-th received signal. The channel matrix of the k-th UE is denoted by

[0038] In some embodiments, in the operation 210, the mapping between the AEs and the TRXs may be constructed based on the number of TRXs, array geometry of the AEs, and connection between the AEs and the TRXs.

[0039] The array geometry of the AEs may refer to the distribution of the AEs. For example, the AEs may form one row, one column, or an array of multiple rows and multiple columns. In some embodiments, taking polarization into account, the array geometry of the AEs may be expressed by rows, columns, and polarization, for example, 4×8×2 distribution shown in FIG. 5 which will be described below.

[0040] FIG. 3A shows an exemplary connection between the AEs and the TRXs to which the example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. In the example shown in the FIG. 3A, in the communication device each TRX connects to all the AEs, and such a hybrid array architecture may be referred to as “fully-connected. ”

[0041] FIG. 3B shows another exemplary connection between the AEs and the TRXs to which the example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. In the example shown in the FIG. 3B, in the communication device each TRX connects to different AE (s) and there is no overlap of AE (s) between the TRXs, and such a hybrid array architecture may be referred to as “subarray based. ”

[0042] The example embodiments of the present disclosure may also be implemented to a hybrid array architecture in which there is overlap of AE (s) between the TRXs, and such hybrid array architecture may be referred to as “overlapped subarray based. ”

[0043] For different hybrid array architectures, the structure of the analog beamforming matrix  may vary.

[0044] FIG. 4A shows an exemplary structure of the analog beamforming matrix according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. The analog beamforming matrix F shown in the FIG. 4A is for the fully-connected hybrid array architecture. Referring to the FIG. 4A, each of  the TRX 1, 2, …, NT connects to all the AE 1, 2, …, MT, and in this case the analog beamforming matrix F is a full matrix.

[0045] FIG. 4B shows another exemplary structure of the analog beamforming matrix according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. The analog beamforming matrix F shown in the FIG. 4B is for the subarray based hybrid array architecture. Referring to the FIG. 4B, each of the TRX 1, 2, …, NT connects to different AEs. Each TRX may connect to e.g. four AEs. The TRX 1 connects to e.g. AE 1, AE 2, AE 3 and AE 4, the TRX 2 connects to e.g. AE 5, AE 6, AE 7 and AE 8, …, the TRX NT connects to e.g. AE (MT -3) , AE (MT -2) , AE (MT -1) and AE MT, in this case the analog beamforming matrix F is block diagonal.

[0046] It may be understood that the example embodiments of the present disclosure may also be implemented to the case where the TRXs connect to different number of AEs and the case of overlapped subarray based hybrid array architecture.

[0047] In some embodiments, the mapping may be exhibited in a mapping table. The mapping table may comprise connection relationship from the AEs to the TRXs, in other words, the mapping table may represent which AE is connected to which TRX. Thus, the mapping table may be referred to as AE-TRX mapping table.

[0048] The mapping table may be expressed as which has a dimension in terms of the number of TRXs and the number, denoted as Ms, of AEs per polarization that are connected to each TRX. Each entry of the table may be the TRX index.

[0049] FIG. 5 shows an exemplary distribution of AEs in terms of the predefined AE indices for a planar array with cross polarization according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. Assuming MT=64 and AEs with indices 1, 2, …, 64, in the case shown in the FIG. 5, the AEs with indices 1 to 32 are +45° polarized, and the AEs with indices 33 to 64 are -45°polarized, so as to form a 4×8×2 distribution of AEs in a uniform planar array with cross polarization. Since the analog processing per polarization can be assumed to be same for long-term process, for simplicity, considering only one beam per polarization is feasible.

[0050] FIG. 6A shows an exemplary AE-TRX mapping table per polarization according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. In the fully-connected case as shown in the FIG. 3A, where each TRX connects to all AEs and AEs are shared among all TRXs, the mapping table has the size of NT / 2×MT / 2 and turns out to be the AE-TRX mapping table shown in the FIG.  6A.

[0051] FIG. 6B shows another exemplary AE-TRX mapping table per polarization according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. In the subarray based case shown in the FIG. 3B, assuming that the number of TRXs is 16, where two AEs may connect to one TRX, the mapping table has the size of 16×2 and may be the AE-TRX mapping table shown in the FIG. 6B.For example, AEs with indices 1 and 2 may be connected to TRX 1, AEs 3 and 4 may be connected to TRX 2, and so on.

[0052] In the operation 220, the shifted codebook set may be generated based on the mapping between the AEs and the TRXs. In some embodiments, the shifted codebook set may include a plurality of shifted codebooks, and a shifted codebook of the shifted codebook set may include coefficients of candidate analog beams and corresponds to one of the TRXs. For example, each shifted codebook in the shifted codebook set may be used for one TRX.

[0053] Based on how AEs are connected to one TRX, for example, the array or subarray size Ms and geometry, in the operation 220, in order to build the shifted codebook, an original codebook may be firstly determined. The original codebook may correspond to a predefined codebook such as a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) codebook with a resolution of N=MsRos, where Ros is the oversampling rate.

[0054] Then, the codebook Cn for TRX n,  can be obtained by incorporating the original codebook co via the AE-TRX mapping table.

[0055] FIG. 7 shows two exemplary codebooks in case of the AE-TRX mapping table shown in the FIG. 6B according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. In case of the AE-TRX mapping table shown in the FIG. 6B, the codebook for TRX 2 and the codebook for TRX 16 can be illustrated by the FIG. 7. Referring to the FIG. 7, the vertical axis of the TRX codebook represents the AE indices and locations in the whole array. For the TRX 2, the original codebook co is located in the rows corresponding to the AE 3 and AE 4, and the rest parts of the codebook are zeros. For the TRX 16, the original codebook co is located in the rows corresponding to the AE 31 and AE 32, and the rest parts of the codebook are zeros. It may be understood that other codebooks may be determined in a manner similar to the codebooks for the TRX 2 and the TRX 16.

[0056] For example, each TRX codebook may be obtained by shifting the original codebook  into a dedicated AE-TRX location and the shifted codebook set C for one polarization can thus be obtained as

[0057] In the above descriptions, the generations of the AE-TRX mapping table and the shifted codebook set are for one polarization. Since the same analog beamformer may be implemented for both polarizations from the long-term perspective, the AE-TRX mapping table and the shifted codebook set can also be constructed for both polarizations.

[0058] For example, to facilitate a joint analog and digital beamforming, the full version of the beamforming matrix for the cross-polarized array may be determined. Therefore, the shifted codebook can be extended to include both polarizations. The extended shifted codebook set may be expressed as which may be constructed by the following formula (2) .

[0059] where represents all-zero matrix of size NT / 2×NT / 2.

[0060] In the fully-connected case, the TRX codebooks may be the same as the original codebook co.

[0061] In the operation 230, the shifted codebook set may be applied to the hybrid beamforming algorithm to obtain the at least one beamforming matrix. In some embodiments, the hybrid beamforming algorithm may be in an iterative manner. The iterative manner may be also referred to as alternating manner.

[0062] FIG. 8 shows an exemplary block diagram illustrating a hybrid beamforming algorithm process according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. The hybrid beamforming algorithm process may be performed in the operation 230 by the communication device, which may be a network device or a UE.

[0063] Referring to the FIG. 8, the inputs of the hybrid beamforming algorithm may include the shifted codebook set 810 and a fully digital beamforming matrix 820, the obtained at least one beamforming matrix may include an analog beamforming matrix 840 and a digital beamforming matrix 850, and a hybrid beamforming algorithm module 830 may iteratively  calculate the analog beamforming matrix and the digital beamforming matrix for each of the TRXs using the corresponding shifted codebook, until analog beams, by which the analog beamforming matrix 840 is formed, for the TRXs are determined.

[0064] The shifted codebook set 810 may be obtained in the subarray based case, e.g. from the formula (2) . Alternatively, the shifted codebook set 810 may be obtained in the fully-connected case. Alternatively, the shifted codebook set 810 may be obtained in the overlapped subarray based case. The fully digital beamforming matrix 820 may be the optimal beamforming matrix assuming that a fully digital beamforming, but not the hybrid beamforming, is performed. The fully digital beamforming matrix 820 may be obtained from a suitable algorithm based on, for example, the knowledge of full channel state information (CSI) . In some embodiments, the hybrid beamforming algorithm performed by the hybrid beamforming algorithm module 830 may be based on an orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm and may be referred to as one-stage codebook shifted OMP hybrid beamforming algorithm since the hybrid beamforming is also based on the shifted codebook set 810 and both the analog and the digital beamforming matrices 840 and 850 are calculated in one stage.

[0065] The hybrid beamforming algorithm module 830 may solve a joint optimization problem that the product of analog and digital beamforming matrices approaches the fully digital beamforming matrix, subject to the array architecture constraint. The corresponding optimization problem may be defined as the following formula (3) .

[0066] where is the fully digital beamforming matrix for the sub-carrier m, F is the analog beamforming matrix which is wideband, and is the digital beamforming matrix, also referred to as digital precoding matrix, for the sub-carrier m. The above minimization problem can be reformulated as the following formula (4) .

[0067] where and are concatenated matrices for multiple sub-carriers.

[0068] FIG. 9 shows an exemplary flowchart performed by the hybrid beamforming algorithm  module in the FIG. 8 according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. The exemplary flowchart is also shown in the following Table 1.

[0069] Table 1: Codebook shifted OMP hybrid beamforming algorithm

[0070] Referring to the FIG. 9, in an operation 910, the hybrid beamforming algorithm module 830 may initialize a residual beamforming matrix Fres. In some embodiments, the initial residual beamforming matrix may be the fully digital beamforming matrix 820. Then, the hybrid beamforming algorithm module 830 may iteratively calculates the analog beamforming matrix and the digital beamforming matrix for each of the TRXs, which may be denoted as TRX n, n =1, 2, …, NT.

[0071] In an operation 920, the hybrid beamforming algorithm module 830 may calculate correlation between the corresponding shifted codebook n and the residual beamforming matrix developed from the fully digital beamforming matrix 820.

[0072] Then, in an operation 930, the hybrid beamforming algorithm module 830 may select an analog beam from the corresponding shifted codebook n based on the calculated correlation. For example, the analog beam with the largest correlation calculated in the operation 920 may be selected.

[0073] Then, in an operation 940, the hybrid beamforming algorithm module 830 may add the selected analog beam into the analog beamforming matrix. The initial analog beamforming matrix may be empty. The coefficients of the selected analog beam may form a vector, and the vector may be added in the analog beamforming matrix as a column.

[0074] Then, in an operation 950, the hybrid beamforming algorithm module 830 may calculate the digital beamforming matrix based on the analog beamforming matrix and the fully digital beamforming matrix 820. For example, the digital beamforming matrix may be calculated by making the product of the analog beamforming matrix and the digital beamforming matrix approach the fully digital beamforming matrix 820.

[0075] Then, in an operation 960, the hybrid beamforming algorithm module 830 may update the residual beamforming matrix using the analog beamforming matrix and the digital beamforming matrix. Then, the operations 920 to 960 may be performed for the next TRX.

[0076] Such addition process in the operation 940 may be referred to as concatenation. With the iterative concatenation, analog beam corresponding to the TRX n, n = 1, 2, …, NT, may be added into the analog beamforming matrix as respective columns. When the last analog beam e.g. corresponding to the TRX NT is added into the analog beamforming matrix, which means all the NT analog beams for the NT TRXs are determined, the analog beamforming matrix 840 may be obtained. And with the forming of the analog beamforming matrix 840, the digital beamforming matrix 850 may also be obtained.

[0077] FIG. 10 shows an exemplary block diagram illustrating another hybrid beamforming algorithm process according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. The hybrid beamforming algorithm process may be performed in the operation 230 by the communication device, which may be a network device or a UE.

[0078] Referring to the FIG. 10, the inputs of the hybrid beamforming algorithm may include the shifted codebook set 1010 and a total channel covariance matrix 1020, the obtained at least one beamforming matrix includes an analog beamforming matrix 1040, and an analog beamforming algorithm module 1030 may iteratively calculate the analog beamforming matrix 1040 for each of the TRXs using the corresponding shifted codebook, until analog beams, by which the analog beamforming matrix 1040 is formed, for the TRXs are determined.

[0079] The shifted codebook set 1010 may be obtained in the subarray based case, e.g. from the formula (2) . Alternatively, the shifted codebook set 1010 may be obtained in the fully-connected case. Alternatively, the shifted codebook set 1010 may be obtained in the overlapped subarray based case. The shifted codebook set 1010 may be identical to or different from the shifted codebook set 810.

[0080] In a case where the analog beamforming algorithm module 1030 is in the network side, the total channel covariance matrix 1020 may be for the target receiving UEs, and in a case where the analog beamforming algorithm module 1030 is in the UE side, the total channel covariance matrix 1020 may be for the target receiving network device (s) . The total channel covariance matrix 1020 will be further described later.

[0081] In some embodiments, the analog beamforming algorithm module 1030 may obtain the the analog beamforming matrix 1040 based on a greedy grid of beam (GoB) algorithm. Then, based on the analog beamforming matrix 1040, beamformed CSI 1050 may be obtained via various suitable ways. Then, based on the beamformed CSI 1050, a digital beamforming algorithm module 1060 may perform a suitable digital beamforming algorithm to form a digital beamforming matrix 1070. The analog beamforming matrix 1040 is obtained at an earlier stage, and the digital beamforming matrix 1070 is obtained at a later stage. Such hybrid beamforming algorithm is based on the shifted codebook set 1010 and may be referred to as two-stage codebook shifted greedy GoB algorithm.

[0082] Such hybrid beamforming takes an efficient way. For example, the analog beamforming may aim at maximizing the total effective array gain, whereas the digital beamforming may try to suppress the interference and exploit the spatial multiplexing gain.

[0083] The optimization problem for analog beamforming may be to maximize the total effective array gain, which may be expressed as the following formula (5) .

[0084] where ||·||F denotes the operation of the Frobenius norm. This optimization problem can be reformulated by the following formula (6) .

[0085] For a simpler implementation, assuming the same analog beamforming for both polarizations. The full analog beamforming matrix can be written as the following formula (7) .

[0086] where is the analog beamforming matrix for one polarization. If the channel is denoted by with super indices being the two polarizations, the above optimization problem in the formula (6) can be reduced to the following formula (8) .

[0087] where is the total channel covariance matrix averaged over two polarizations.

[0088] Given the knowledge of the total channel covariance matrix 1020 from the target receiving UEs or the target receiving network device (s) , analog beamforming vectors per polarization may be sequentially selected from the shifted codebook set 1010. The final analog beamforming matrix 1040 can be obtained via the formula (7) .

[0089] The implementation of the codebook shifted greedy GoB algorithm can also be the full version case based on the optimization problem in the formula (6) , by replacing  cn, NT / 2 with Q, F,   NT, but has a higher computational complexity.

[0090] FIG. 11 shows an exemplary flowchart performed by the analog beamforming algorithm module in the FIG. 10 according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. The exemplary flowchart is also shown in the following Table 2.

[0091] Table 2: Codebook shifted Greedy GoB algorithm

[0092] Referring to the FIG. 11, the analog beamforming algorithm module 1030 may iteratively calculates the analog beamforming matrix for each of the TRXs, which may be denoted as TRX n, n = 1, 2, …, NT.

[0093] In an operation 1110, the analog beamforming algorithm module 1030 may select an analog beam from the corresponding shifted codebook n based on the total channel covariance matrix 1020.

[0094] Then, in an operation 1120, the analog beamforming algorithm module 1030 may add the selected analog beam into the analog beamforming matrix. The initial analog beamforming matrix may be empty. The coefficients of the selected analog beam may form a vector, and the vector may be added in the analog beamforming matrix as a column.

[0095] Then, in an operation 1130, the analog beamforming algorithm module 1030 may update the total channel covariance matrix by removing component of the selected analog beam. Then, the operations 1110 to 1130 may be performed for the next TRX.

[0096] Such addition process in the operation 1120 may be similar to the addition process in the operation 940 and be referred to as concatenation. With the iterative concatenation, analog beam corresponding to the TRX n, n = 1, 2, …, NT, may be added into the analog beamforming matrix as respective columns. When the last analog beam e.g. corresponding to the TRX NT is added into the analog beamforming matrix, which means all the NT analog beams for the NT TRXs are determined, the analog beamforming matrix 1040 may be obtained.

[0097] According to the example embodiments of the present disclosure, the shifted codebook set is generated independent of the algorithm modules. The example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a generalized implementation solution that can be applied to various hybrid beamforming array architectures. The hybrid beamforming algorithm chip or module can thus  be adaptable to various RF front ends.

[0098] Moreover, the codebook shifted OMP algorithm according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure jointly design the analog and digital beamformers, which may outperform the two-stage legacy solution.

[0099] In addition, the codebook shifted GoB algorithm according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure selects analog beamforming vectors from the codebook instead of calculating basis vectors via matrix-vector multiplication in e.g. power method, and thus can achieve a lower computational complexity. Furthermore, the codebook based feature can also overcome the potential quantization loss occurring in the legacy scheme since continuous phase shifters are assumed.

[0100] The above advantages may be exhibited in simulation results. In the simulation, the shifted codebook based hybrid beamforming is implemented for the subarray based architecture. The simulation setup is shown in the following Table 3.

[0101] Table 3: Simulation setup for hybrid beamforming

[0102] FIG. 12 shows an exemplary mapping between radiators to AEs in the simulation according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure. Referring to the FIG. 12, 384 radiators of the array are formulated to 128 AEs via combining three vertical radiators to one AE using a fixed down tilt. The analog beams are applied to map 128 AEs into 64, 32, 16, and 8 TRXs, with subarrays of sizes 2x1, 4x1, 4x2, 4x4, respectively, i.e., mapping 2, 4, 8, 16 AEs, respectively, to one TRX.

[0103] The reference solution is the “Hy Truncated Power” proposed in N. Song, T. Yang, H. Sun, “Overlapped Subarray Based Hybrid Beamforming for Millimeter Wave Multiuser Massive  MIMO” , In IEEE Signal Processing Letters, vol. 24, Issue 5, May 2017. “Hy CB-shifted OMP” and “Hy CB-shifted Greedy GoB” solutions according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure are applied. For the two-stage algorithms “Hy Truncated Power” and “Hy CB shifted Greedy GoB” , block diagonalization method is applied for the digital precoding.

[0104] FIG. 13A shows the simulation results in terms of various subarray configurations. Referring to the FIG. 13A, K represents the number of target UEs, and because of maximum 4-layer transmission for one UE, K=2 is for 8-layer transmission. The labeled data above the columns are relative performance values with respect to the Hy Truncated Power solution. It can be observed that the shifted codebook based solutions are applicable to various subarray configurations. The Hy CB-shifted OMP solution outperforms the Hy Truncated Power solution and the Hy CB-shifted Greedy GoB solution has a similar performance as the Hy Truncated Power solution but with a much simpler implementation / computation procedure.

[0105] FIG. 13B shows the simulation results in terms of different hybrid array architectures. Referring to the FIG. 13B, K=4 is for 16-layer transmission. The labeled data above the columns are relative performance values with respect to the Hy Truncated Power solution. The simulation results similar to the FIG. 13A can be observed. In the above simulation the BS is the transmit side, and the UE is the reception side. It may be understood that similar simulation can be performed and similar simulation results can be observed in a case where the UE is the transmit side, and the BS is the reception side.

[0106] Therefore, the shifted codebook set based hybrid beamforming according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure can be applied to different array architectures as well as different subarray configurations. The resulting algorithms based on OMP and Greedy GoB show good performances.

[0107] FIG. 14 shows a block diagram illustrating an example device 1400 for hybrid beamforming according to the example embodiments of the present disclosure. The device, for example, may be at least part of a communication device such as the communication device with the massive MIMO 100 in the above examples, and the communication device may be a network device or a UE.

[0108] As shown in the FIG. 14, the example device 1400 may include at least one processor 1410 and at least one memory 1420 that may store instructions 1430. The instructions 1430,  when executed by the at least one processor 1410, may cause the device 1400 at least to perform the example method 200 described above.

[0109] In various example embodiments, the at least one processor 1410 in the example device 1400 may include, but not limited to, at least one hardware processor, including at least one microprocessor such as a central processing unit (CPU) , a portion of at least one hardware processor, and any other suitable dedicated processor such as those developed based on for example Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) . Further, the at least one processor 1410 may also include at least one other circuitry or element not shown in the FIG. 14.

[0110] In various example embodiments, the at least one memory 1420 in the example device 1400 may include at least one storage medium in various forms, such as a transitory memory and / or a non-transitory memory. The transitory memory may include, but not limited to, for example, a random-access memory (RAM) , a cache, and so on. The non-transitory memory may include, but not limited to, for example, a read only memory (ROM) , a hard disk, a flash memory, and so on. The term “non-transitory, ” as used herein, is a limitation of the medium itself (i.e., tangible, not a signal) as opposed to a limitation on data storage persistency (e.g., RAM vs. ROM) . Further, the at least memory 1420 may include, but are not limited to, an electric, a magnetic, an optical, an electromagnetic, an infrared, or a semiconductor system, apparatus, or device or any combination of the above.

[0111] Further, in various example embodiments, the example device 1400 may also include at least one other circuitry, element, and interface, for example at least one I / O interface, at least one antenna element, and the like.

[0112] In various example embodiments, the circuitries, parts, elements, and interfaces in the example device 1400, including the at least one processor 1410 and the at least one memory 1420, may be coupled together via any suitable connections including, but not limited to, buses, crossbars, wiring and / or wireless lines, in any suitable ways, for example electrically, magnetically, optically, electromagnetically, and the like.

[0113] It is understood that the structure of the device on the side of the communication device with the massive MIMO 100 is not limited to the above example device 1400.
